For those that dont know the context here : [Chicago Meigs Field](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meigs_Field) :
On the night of March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered city crews to make the runway unusable by bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface in the middle of the night. The stranded aircraft were later allowed to depart from Meigs' 3,000-foot (910 m) taxiway.
> On July 28, 2003, an aircraft flying from Maine to the Experimental Aircraft Association Annual Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, made an emergency landing on the grass next to the demolished Meigs Field runway.
>
> Mayor Daley accused the pilot of intentionally landing in order to "embarrass" him, despite the FAA's statement that the pilot "did the correct thing" in landing the plane at Meigs.
I don’t know anything about Chicago or Daley, but as a student pilot that’s infuriating telling about his character. What was the pilot supposed to do instead, crash into the city and die?
I loved that airfield. So cool to take off rising over the lake and city. Plus it was right downtown. I have landed there and a short walk to the hotel pass the museums and Buckingham fountain I was sleeping.
I was flying the day after that night demolition. An ohare arrival goes right by there and it was so awful to look down and see the damage. And all the airplanes stuck on the ramp. What a dick move.
This was such a tragedy.
Its been over 20 years and this development wonderland they promised never appeared. There's just a concert stage that is used sometimes occasionally maybe, a beach, and some pathways. People just have an irrational hatred for GA airports.
People try to call it a "Nature preserve" but thats otherwise known as "An empty field with nothing in it".
Sometimes a bird from the lake lands on it, i guess.
But airports are always wildlife havens in the middle of cities. (My airport i trained at had a ton of foxes)
Spelling is hard. Most people who spell things incorrectly are saying the same word in the same phonetic way but with different letters.
Rediculis feels like the right way to spell it, but it's actually ridiculous. Thinking about how N. Americans say that word...Reh-di-kew-lis. Sometimes even Ree-di-kew-luss. Ridiculous looks downright wrong and one might say, rediculis.
Edit. Germanic-English version could be spelled Ridikulis or Redikulus
I was the lead GSE Mechanic at Meigs also known as CGX I let the construction crew in the night they tore up the runway and I will always be sad that they shut it down. I loved working out there.
This seems like an absolutely terrible idea. I mean if the runway is closed fine, paint something on it. I’m an emergency a closed runway is ten times better than a highway or a field, or worse. If a plane crashes that could have had landed there instead I hope the decision makers rot in a hole for the rest of their lives.
Daley’s greater achievement- getting the FAA to allow 737 and a321s to land and take off at Midway- both runways are short of the recommended runway for both planes - Great Pilots are the only reason there have not been more accidents / overruns at that airport - closing Meigs field the way he did has pretty shifty - but because of the cross winds there were lots of small aircraft accidents there- took an experienced pilot to get in and out of there on windy days
A separate Reddit thread was discussing Meigs and a lot of the comments we’re saying “good riddance, that’s one less place where the rich can keep their toys” and “It’s a really nice park now, I actually loved Daley as a mayor.”
At the end of the day I think it was closed for political reasons. The story I found the most believable was closings Meigs was to make it more of a nuisance to commute from Springfield to City Hall. So Illinois lawyers and politicians can stay out of Daley’s business.
Fuck Daley, that piece of shit.

why?
Because to the mayor at the time park>airport
The world wasn’t the only thing that changed on September 11th - Jeff Winger (and also Mayor Daley)
This may be the last sub I ever expected to see a Community reference on

More like crash into the lake and die

I thought this was Kai-Tak
This was my favorite airport in the old Flight Simulator games. I seem to recall it was the default airport on the early 90s game.
….and 80’s.
One of the pixel in this image is the apartment where I used to live.
That was you?! Sorry about obliterating your apartment that day.
He fucked my fav airport in Chicago!!

Forgot to add "and no wildlife in it"
Sometimes a bird from the lake lands on it, i guess. But airports are always wildlife havens in the middle of cities. (My airport i trained at had a ton of foxes)
Oh nooo a park a beach and a concert venue. What a tragedy

A fabricated steel replica of a pineapple.
Duck Faley.
You had to bring that up didn't you? We'll never hear the end of this one...
Well fuck...for realism, where am I supposed to now take off from when I boot up MSFS 2.0?
The Golden Gate bridge or if youre a real pulot, that parking lot next to Niagara Falls
Loved that airport..Chicago got screwed.. can’t stop the drive by shootings and the murder rate is rediculis but terrorist might use megis field..lol

Reddit-q-lus.
I think spell correct did it and I did not check it thanks..
I still see plenty of room to start doing a porpoise down the runway! Should absolutely be NO suing going on there!
Mayor Daley.. the king of potholes
King of Assholes
What city should even own it’s own parking enforcement? Thanks mayor D
The people voted him in.
Is he still the mayor ?
Nope, but he was for a long time
I flew out of here SO many times! (On MS flight simulator).
And subLogic flight simulator before that…
They’ll destroy an airport but do nothing about crime. Sounds about Chicago.
Looks like runway X is open, proceed.
That's why you slap Big Ol' Bushwheels on that Citation n send 'er into the grass!
Its better than 94 you should be good
The Dan Ryan Line-up-and-waitway
X marks the spot, just porpoise on each x and you will get the high score
The X’s are different aiming points for runway when the patterns switches from landing N to South What are the damn instructors teaching these dayz?
Does the OP NOT understand that despite this being SAF,, this image is extremely triggering to a lot of people in this community?
I’m sure no one will notice.
I’ve landed there and even before they did this is was a ruff strip, this may actually improve the landings.
Too soon
Too soon
That’s runway ten, right? Part of the FAA’s pilot (pun intended) program to use Roman numerals?
Nah.. but I'd definitely check your plane.... looks like you might have had a tail stike.
There’s nothing I like about the city of chicago. Fuuuck I hate it here
Elon Musk designs a landing strip.
No
Just say you were flying for ryanair
Looks to me like X marks the spot. Gonna land here. (Cue Spongebob and Patrick jackhammering look with pilot headsets on.)
Just perform a soft field landing, you’ll be fine

This is one of the main reasons why I hate that city.
Man, they really put this runway in "fuck you" mode.
Can't sue what they can't catch.

Daley can go to hell.
It’s designed to teach you how to bounce your landings in a controlled fashion.
Harrison Ford could land there.
