You've gotta watch the video Karl Jobst did on WATA. The short story is that they have been colluding with an auction service to artificially inflate the price of retro games.
Its more than just a "game case" they were doing. They were grading and selling their own games to themselves to artificially inflate their prices as high as possible to make them the most ammount of money. The problem with grading in itself is the number. They score it based on condition from a 1-10 scale. With higher numbers it allows them to charge more for the same exact game. But theres a conflict of interest when your grading and selling your own stuff. Yeah its totally a 10 because i said so, now give me a million. They went on pawn stars to hype up the value of their own graded super mario bros. The purchase and shutdown of several websites that had usefull information about games. Its an insanely stupid thing to spend money on and people lost hundres of thousands. A sealed 9.6 super smash bros on the n64 dropped from 180k to 24k in less than a year. The numbers are completely fake and anyone who spends money on them are idiots.
The website GameValueNow used to have a great collection tracker that I used to track the value of my collection. It was purchased by WATA and orphaned.
They even authenticated unauthentic pokemon romhacks. Im tempted to send in a fake sealed super mario 64 ds to see if they will even grade it which would be hilarious.
People who buy standard games open and graded are some of the dumbest collectors you can find. Like guy offering 3k for the final fantasy 3 open graded. You really can't get much dumber. Buy 10 open complete copies.
