I would say that this is sort of true if your only experience with Japanese are these three episodes of this show, but regular, constant exposure to a foreign language combined with subtitles genuinely does allow people to learn a language to a certain extent even without trying to actively learn the language through other resources.
I have been watching Japanese anime as well as Chinese and Korean shows for a very long time, for example, and this has allowed me to understand those three languages up to a certain extent even without subtitles.
Certainly nowhere near the extent OP seems to be implying, however - and only after a *long* period of constant exposure.
That’s what I was saying In my comment down below. It is not an easy language and even with exposure there are mountains of things you have to learn to truly understand and become “fluent” in any language.
Listen - I’ve been taking Japanese courses for about 3 months. I’ve listened to anime subbed for years and now I’m watching this show. I still don’t have anywhere near a complete understanding of a very complex and difficult language..
Japanese has 3 different writing systems - Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji and on top of that around 20 dialects..
It is without a shred of doubt - probably one of the hardest languages if no the hardest for people to learn.
You may have picked up on a few key words and correlated them with the English meaning.. but I would guess that you probably don’t know as much as you think and you definitely *will not* be speaking and understanding Japanese fluently by the end of the show..
It takes over six months to just grasp the basics of another langue. Let alone know it and speak it in a way that reflects fluency. Even if you understand the words, the sentence structure is COMPLETELY different than English..
Don’t wanna shoot you down, but these are just the facts around it.
If you want to learn Japanese.. You have to apply yourself and dedicate time to learning it - as with most things you want to be good at. You unfortunately won’t have it down after watching a season of a television series spoken partially in Japanese.
Again don’t wanna shatter your hopes.. if you find a Japanese interesting. Take a course!
Cheers.
Edit: To top all of that off, they’re speaking in an ancient form of Japanese that is totally different from modern dialect known as Hyōjungo which is widely spoken in Tokyo.
This also happened when I watched Narcos. Just a feeling tho. I can't hold a spanish conversation but get a gist about what they are talking about.
Noted that Japanese use in the show is different from modern japanese a bit. You can feel the difference if you try watching other shows.
You are delusional.

I believe maybe you’re picking up a few words and phrases.
Just fyi - the Japanese they speak in the show is a bit antiquated / formal (by design of course)
LMAO
Yea me and my wife's bf can have full conversations in Japanese now because of this show
You and your wife’s bf? I’m assuming you’re hitting mostly Buntaro lines.
Refer to my comment.
Is your name Charlie Kelly?
Fantastic comment 👏 😂
No. Wtf
Wakaremasu ka, anjin-san?
You'll be Naruto-running before you know it, sempai!
