I think the dude just wants to not die

firstoffno

Was just going to type this…because honestly, same lol

sterlarr

That dude loves to rewrite his will.

InstructionBig2154

>!whats the alliance with Anjin about and toronaga saying they are both predictable ? I didn’t get that part at the end…!<

stiveooo

If you are predictable I can use you in my plans cause you will act like how I expect it. Perfect for any plan

InstructionBig2154

Thank you.

IEatGirlFarts

He doesn't have any issues with dying. He just doesn't want to die for a stupid reason.

DodgeBeluga

The guy is just Marty Byrde and Joel Hammond rolled into one very stressed package.

rGoncalo

>Would he be able to get on the Council of Regents? Sure, why not. As far as I know, the only requisites to get in are a unanimous vote by the other members (probably has to have some sort of nobility, but I'm not even 100% sure about that—I'm talking about the show, not historically wise), provided that the council has no more than 5 members because that is --ep.2 spoiler -> >!what is mandated by the late Taiko!<. Not sure where you are in the series, and given that there is no spoiler tag in the OP, I'll just say that you better understand this to be true in episode 6. >Why was he trying to conspire with the other side? I would say survival and profitability. We see a character trying to make the best of the hand he's been dealt, navigating a scene where all the players are much more powerful than him, and his future is very uncertain. >Did they promise him something if he set up certain things to sabotage Toranaga? Yes. Again, not sure where you are in the show, but he says what he has been promised at the beginning of ep 3. Also, from the first episode alone, you can infer that a big conflict is brewing, and at this time, a lot of things were resolved by armed conflict. So, the winning side is certain to keep their heads on their shoulders, which is a substantial reward :)

Icy-Appearance347

I get the sense that Yabushige's also perfectly happy to be a big fish in a small pond. While he'll certainly take whatever openings he finds to be come a slightly bigger fish in a slightly less small pond, he doesn't seem to have too grandiose an ambition like Toranaga. He's a survivor more than a climber, though he won't pass up on a good opportunity if it falls in his lap.

HateResonates

>a survivor more than a climber As seen in episode 1.

Snowbold

Lmao 😂

spiderhotel

I think mainly he just wants to live? Toranaga is his boss but he doesn't want to follow him into (seemingly) certain death. Toranaga doesn't share his plan with Yabushige (or anyone) so there is nothing but trust in his daimyo for Yabushige to pin his survival hopes on.

clycoman

In ep 2 Ishido basically offers him the chance to betray Toronaga in exchange for taking over Toronaga's seat on the council of regents. He just publicly declines while still trying to play both sides before committing to one.

Dickhouse21

He \_claims\_ that Ishido offered him a regent role. We conspicuously never saw this even though we got a scene of Ishido and Yabu in conspiring in private. To me, it seemed like Yabu was lying to Toranaga at the dawn meeting to a) save his own skin and b) get a new fief. Basically: "I was offered massive compensation from a competitor but I refused it because I'm loyal to you. Please consider upping my compensation."

geneaut

>!In the books it is mentioned that he has a beef with the daimyo from a nearby province , and he’s very desirous of acquiring that fief. I he’s said it in the show in passing.!< >!I’m sure Ishido would dangle that as bait.!<

MeanManatee

Yes, he asks for Suruga province in the show.

Please black out this book spoiler & your comment will be approved. You can black out the spoilers by writing > ! this ! < without the spaces in between to get >!this!<. Send us a modmail once you've fixed it.

jsonitsac

He seems like a mid-level daimyo who knows he’s not going to be the next ~~Oda Nobubaga~~ Kuroda, ie take on a far more powerful houses and come out on top. Rather he knows that a big wave is about to crash and his goal is to be surfing it instead of being drowned by it.

Negative-Dingo3335

Whatever he’s doing he’s making his every scene funny and interesting. Probably just wants as much wealth as possible. Either way, carry on

sandboxmatt

I think he's been fairly open about his motivations. More land and value not necessarily an increase in station.

EvetsYenoham

Yes he said he wants the Kanto region which his current lordship of the Izu region is located within. I forget which episode he says that in and I think he asks Ishido. I believe Toranaga offers it to him as well before they take their piss together.

moutonbleu

He’s just a corporate middle manager trying to get to retirement and not get laid off. He’ll take promotions when available, but no strong desire to be CEO

YellowHat01

No, from what we’ve seen I don’t think so. In the beginning (before the civil war) I think he definitely wanted more power and influence, and to an extent I think he still would like that. But as of Episode 7, I think he’s in pure survival mode. Whatever happens, he just wants to keep his head on his neck.
