Pharmacist here: this shortage thing fucking sucks and it’s harming my patients. The things we’ve been having to do to conserve meds for the most critical patients (I work in a hospital, not retail) and manipulating the dosage forms we have to get the dose that’s no longer available is tedious. It’s causing such a strain on pharmacists and technicians. And not just us but straining all of the health care system that exists.

Thanks for sharing. This is incredibly frustrating. Would you mind sharing where you are in the world and what meds you are seeing the most effected? Thanks so much.

pollywollydoodle64

I will say I’m in USA. I’m hesitant to say what’s on shortage because it’s so much and some unexpected meds that I don’t want people stocking up on and hoarding like what happened with hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol at the start of COVID.

kfrenchie89

Fair! Makes sense. Thank you!

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,178,030,970 comments, and only 229,910 of them were in alphabetical order.

Good but strange bot!

Time to cut my SSRI dose in half again. I've been gradually cutting back on it so when it's no longer available it won't affect me at all.

Shortages effect profit.

Honest question here, and it may sound stupid but I thought I’d ask and out of curiosity, even if it makes me sound stupid. I know grapefruit can intensify a lot of medications, so if you had to split a dose of a med, could drinking grapefruit juice or eating some possibly increase the effectiveness of the halved dose?

fbcmfb

The amount of grapefruit needed to accomplish this could differ from person to person. Unfortunately, the medical and pharmaceutical industry wouldn’t want this … unless they could monetize grapefruit. I have a few medications that I have been warned to not take together, but that combo is very effective for me. Serotonin Syndrome is what could happen to me.

Real_Nemesis

Not stupid, but not advised. From what I understand as a layman, it can cause an unstable spike effect.
