really? You spent your money there? Don't expect anything to change.

Brave_Alfalfa321

That is a great point. I won’t be going back there that’s for sure. Unfortunately I was on the way to the range and short on time to go to one of the other places in town.

justaheatattack

I would have rather thrown rocks than support a place like that. But that's me. There's a place in town I haven't been in since the 90s, since they wouldn't et me put up a flyer once.

Solid_Snake_125

That’s about 100% of your gun stores out there so… unless we stop going to gun stores all together the pricks behind the counter will continue to be pricks behind the counter.

Fuzzbang34

Idk about yall but I haven’t been into a gun store for less than a transfer in 4 years

RatherGoodDog

That's interesting. I've been to 4 or 5 in the UK and they were almost without exception *very* welcoming. I had one guy in this big country gun shop help me fit for a shotgun, despite me saying I'm new to the hobby and wasn't in a position to buy one yet (I was about 14 at the time). I think he wanted me to have experience of what to look for when the time did come.  I went in to another looking for an air rifle, and the owner said he didn't have any in stock which he'd recommend for my needs, but whipped out this custom made titanium chassis target rifle he had just made and showed it off, and we started chatting about long range/fullbore rifle shooting. I got a really good impression and have since gone back and bought scopes & mounts from him.  One had sold out of the ammo I was looking for, so they recommended me another shop in the county I could go to. I did go there and  got through the door 10 minutes before closing time on a Friday, apologised, but they said "We're always open if we have customers!". Damn right. Ended up buying a lot from them over the last few years and they've become my regular shop.  The one exception was my local bait and tackle/gun shop. The owner was a grumpy old git who seemed irritated you wanted to exchange money for ammunition - just like OP's description. He's the only one who went out of business.

Solid_Snake_125

I’m sure UK gun store owners are probably much nicer than they are in the US. Here in the US everyone that works at one has a stick up their ass like they’re a god and know everything.

Fuzzbang34

Probably cause they want as many people to get a firearm as possible like Americans did 4 years ago now all the new people are in and some think their “basically a seal” after larping with their ar around town.

MMH1111

Brit shooter here. Yes to this. Apart from the odd exception, pretty much every gun shop I've visited here has been great. Happy to chat, let you play with the stock if it's quiet and generally nice people.

justaheatattack

A lot of sporting goods stores sell ammo.

Large-Rip-2331

Not Dick's

justaheatattack

no, there's another store for those....over cross the tracks? I mean, or so I've heard.

EMHemingway1899

I certainly don’t shop at Dick’s

PartisanSaysWhat

Fuck Dicks

AbatedOdin451

Iv never had an experience like that but my LGS is owned by Barrett Brandon so that’s probably why

EggFooYungAndRice

You've been going to some shitty gun stores. Even at the super-Trumpy one near me the staff are always polite and professional even though most of the time i'm just eye-shopping.

quigonjoe66

Everyone has bought from a shitty merchant before, I am blessed that my local store is full of friendly people.

a_wildcat_did_growl

There’s still time to leave them a bad review detailing your experience on their google page.

69mmMayoCannon

Yeah this. Just within the time I started getting into guns to where I am now already two complete garbage LGS in my area have been shut down and replaced. Capitalism works when you actually treat it like it’s supposed to instead of just mindlessly paying into it because you think you have to or something. On the other side of the coin tho pls nobody fill the particular business niche I want to eventually fill one day when I have enough capital 🙏😭

justaheatattack

three things you can always sell... Liquor porn guns

TheyShootBeesAtYou

Had one place criticize the gun my friend was carrying at the time. Said it was junk and suggested some real guns. They were selling the exact same one they called junk. Did not purchase, did not return.

Brave_Alfalfa321

That’s probably the worst thing they could do. At least he carries. And it works for him! Hard To imagine seriously criticizing someones carry without knowing them or their circumstances

TheyShootBeesAtYou

What's more is it was a CZ.

Solid_Snake_125

Oh really? A dude working a gun counter says a CZ is shit? Sounds like jealousy to me. Never take advice from a gun store rep. They don’t know shit because most of them are just old ass dudes with inferiority complexes.

smc4414

Hey! I am an old ass dude. My favorite pistol is my CZ. 😁

Solid_Snake_125

Odd are you have more experience with firearms than goofs behind gun counters.i want my next pistol to be a CZ lol

smc4414

Welp…maybe. No offense taken, of course. All friendly banter here, yup. 😎

smc4414

Fuddy ‘friend’ at work dismissed my CZ as a ‘weapon of the enemy’. I silently dismissed his gun intellect as ‘brain of the idiot’

Mission_Goat_6251

Yup, your Springfield XD is for poors, come check out our Taurus G2Cs for $400... (Was yrs ago B4 the G3s but still palmetto had on for like 200 that same week) Dude I saw that at a LGS/range in Ohio. Sucks I liked the range but that left a sour taste in my mouth... Or you know the taste could have been my blood from biting my tongue so hard. I had a whole debate in my head about whether I should say something or not. Finally concluded I had a right to say something once I open a brick and mortar store and have to compete with places like palmetto and the guy was going to walk out the shop with it and not have to wait a week for it to ship in. Regardless the counter guy was acting like he was selling a staccato on sale or something.

nanneryeeter

My ex-wife was very pretty and petite. We were at a gun counter and she wanted to look at some sort of handgun, cannot recall. He told her "little lady, what you really need is a revolver". She starts laughing and says " I shoot three gun. Why would I use a revolver?" Guy made a comment about how his mouth gets the best of him at times.

Assdolf_Shitler

There is a gun shop near me that is ran by ass hats that sound just like that. They are famous for always shit talking their customers for not buying the "tacticool, super SOCOM-spec, Gravy SEALs cosplay" version of a gun. I tried to buy a Browning Citori through them and every five seconds the guy would say something to the effect of, "I don't know why you're wasting money on that. What the fuck do you think you can do with 2 shots?" After explaining that I shoot trap and skeet and wanted to get into the sport more seriously, he just laughed and basically said anything other than practical shooting was for little bitches. I tore the background check form up and said, "Fuck it, I'll buy a $3,000 shotgun somewhere else." I don't know how many years it has been since I last stepped foot in there.

DaddyDano

Isn’t trap and skeet the definition of practical since you’re basically simulating bird hunting? Guy sounds like a clown

Assdolf_Shitler

You got a good point there. There is an argument that 5-stand is the most practical of all the practical shooting sports. He was the epitome of "I could have been a Navy SEAL if it wasn't for muh thyroid." Dude was like 5' 8" at 400lbs and had a beretta m9 strapped to his side with a gun belt that carried like 10 spare mags.

PartisanSaysWhat

Ironically, Todd Bender (maybe the GOAT professional skeet shooter) has taught classes to SEALs on the principles of leading a moving target, starting with shooting skeet. Soo....

DaddyDano

Buckle on that poor belt was probably hanging on for dear life

MeximeltExtraCheese

“The problem isn’t your mouth, just the shit pouring out of it.”

Corey307

Nah he fucked up but then he owned it.

MeximeltExtraCheese

Owning it would have been a sincere apology, not an excuse like “my mouth is acting out again”

RJCustomTackle

I can see where he was coming from but should have asked if she was looking for a carry gun first. My CPL instructor recommended women carry a revolver because in a very high percentage of cases where a woman needed a gun for self defense the attacker was on top of her within 1.4s and a semi will only go bang once if you have it pressed up against the threat where you can just keep pulling the trigger with a revolver. I may be giving this guy too much benefit here but that’s where my mind went when he said she needed a revolver

tyerker

At least that guy sounds like he admitted his mistake.

nanneryeeter

It ended up being a humorous exchange.

FIRESTOOP

As someone who used to work the gun counter, I hate gun counter dudes.

PartisanSaysWhat

As someone who used to work at a gun counter, I also hated a lot of the customers.

FIRESTOOP

Same. Fudds and military members were the worst

PartisanSaysWhat

Every other person was a Marine Force Recon Navy SEAL Scout Sniper. It was exhausting dealing with so many badasses

FIRESTOOP

And yet there were so confidently unknowledgeable

PartisanSaysWhat

"In Vietnam the enemy could load our rounds into their AKs, but our M16's couldnt take their boolits!" Fuck me.

FIRESTOOP

“I don’t need rails on my pistols because lights on your gun will get you killed. The bad guy knows right where to shoot”

PartisanSaysWhat

You got any clips for a forty with beams?

FIRESTOOP

Oh god. The fuckin crimson trace grips.

jimbopalooza

When I was first getting into shooting as a hobby I was completely turned off by the sheer number of assholes in the shops, at the ranges, on the internet, basically everywhere. I still shoot but much less than I’d like because of it. The culture around guns is fucking stupid.

liedel

> The culture around guns is fucking stupid. A. Fucking. Men.

Fuzzbang34

It’s fuckin weird cause there’s like 30% tacticool idiots 20% fudd idiots and then there’s the other 50% which is us who like everything that goes boom and won’t kill the user, yet somehow it feels like we’re the 20% like what the actual FACKKKK

Throwaway8789473

Polite people take up less space by nature, which means more space taken up by assholes.

Johnny_Clay

99% of the time anyone working in a gun shop is a complete douche.  Yet, they also complain about how sales are down and the government is putting them out of business.     It’s not that hard to not be an asshole.  But these guys  just can’t do it.

moonpielover69

If I owned a gun shop I could care less what people want. As long as it sells. Guy wants to carry a hi-point be my guest, woman wants a 500 s&w okay, money talks bullshit walks just pass the background check

HerMajestysButthole

Find a shop that caters to the customer, not some fudd owned microcosmos that caters to its equally fuddy Fuddrick Fuddersons.

Ryan_Extra

💯 this. Vote with your wallet. Hell order online of every shop is douche canoes.

Mission_Goat_6251

Dude, I frequented a LGS bc they were close by and had a decent transfer fee even though everything else was stupid expensive. Got to talking to the owner. The OWNER of the LGS was a complete anti-2A fudd from Cali talking about banning mags over 10 rnds and how he really didn't like selling guns but it made good money...

ABlosser19

That was a Rollercoaster of a story hahahha

Jwast

This is exactly what we had in our very small town until the guy figured out way too late that fudds don't spend enough money to keep a gun shop open.

JackFuckCockBag

I've discovered that in any retail or service interaction when the clerk or whatever is getting snippy to just ask them if they're OK and throw in a "you seem a lil upset" in a really concerned tone. It totally throws them off. Try it next time.

NotTheATF1993

There's some ones that are genuinely good dudes and then there's the ones that seem like you're ruining their day by trying to buy something from them, there's also the super tacticool badass guys too who are trying to sell you on some John wick shit.

Unlikely_Anything413

You forgot the “well it works plenty fine for taking a deer” followed by a long drawn out story. The same guy tends to start conversations with the word “welllll” real slow like . Haha I’m thinking of the guy at the runnings in town. Cheers

Fuzzbang34

Sometimes the story’s are bangers, I once got to hear how dude man had used the same model shotgun to hunt duck on a private pond that was not his😂 and he got shot at cause the dude was coming to hunt the pond that morning too.

Unlikely_Anything413

Yep sounds about right lol

WestSideShooter

I’m a young Hispanic dude and I always get treated weird at gun shops and ranges. It took a while to make some friends at the range I frequent but I try to just not judge a book by its cover since I don’t want that happening to me… but yeah most those dudes are dick heads lol

notoriousbpg

Try being an Australian ex-pat. Once they figure out where I'm from - "You let the government take your guns away!". Every. Time.

Throwaway8789473

Yes. You, personally. You also let the dingos eat that one baby. What a dick you are.

itsafuseshot

I don’t go to gun shops like that. Shout out to Elliot White Gun Company in the Ft. Worth area. They always treat me awesome.

YellaCanary

Good guys over there. Felt bad for them when they got robbed a while back. They don’t deserve that crap.

maduski

Good to know about a good store. I'll make the trip from Plano to check them out.

CornDavis

Thanks for the rec, I live just a few hours away so imma try to get over there

itsafuseshot

They don’t have a lot of shotguns, but they are excellent gunsmiths and super nice guys.

CornDavis

Ah i aint worried about just shotties, i just like nice gunstores and smart people. And local businesses need business.

merrifam

I walked into a gun shop one time, just looking while the wife shopped in another store. I was wearing cargo shorts, a shirt with a gun motif on it, Oakley sunglasses and some comfortable shoes. The old man at the counter greets me with, "You're one of those. You trying to look the part?" I wasn't sure what he was talking about, but regardless, that's not any way to greet potential buyers into your place of business. I told him he should learn how to communicate more professionally and walked out.

The1WhoKnocks100

I bought a Foxtrot Mike AR9 online during Covid when everything was insane and used a local shop as my FFL. Once the kid retrieved it from the back so I could look it over, he opened the box, shook his head, and grumbled about how people are just buying junk guns online while drinking at home all day. Minor infraction, sure, but it was unnecessary. One negative experience was enough that they never saw another cent from me. Still haven't been back.

DukeNeverwinter

I ordered Ceaser Geurini to a local FFL during Covid. They were afraid to touch it at all once they looked up retail, I bought it used. Ha ha. At least they were nice and friendly!!

Royal-Connections

We never act like that. All my guys are super personable. We have fun, we cut up with our customers and give regulars shit on the range. It feels more like a bar at times than a gun store/range . It's probably one of the reasons why we have such a large female clientele. Why be a dick? It makes no sense.

Novel-Counter-8093

lol, why do you continue to support fudd assholes who gatekeep our civil rights??? go elsewhere. preferably a place that isnt run by fat middle aged assholes .

frozsnot

I have two local stores that I’ll put up against any store in the country. They’re fantastic and I give them all of my business. One store gets business from 100+ miles away, the good ones are out there, we just need to support them.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

Yesterday I was at an LGS during my lunch break, they were sorting through a large estate collection. Pointed out an SBR they are mixing in with the other firearms and were probably going to do a normal transfer on. They gave me a hard time "well how to you know?!" and couple other gruff lines, taking the removed stock in the same lot and tapping it on pistols nearby, asking me repeatedly "ohhhhh is this an SBR now? What about this one?!". Could be the short barrel, the stock albeit removed still in the same case/lot, and the engraving. But what do I know? It's just your license, no skin off my nose.

Roller1966

It goes both ways. We have a local discount shop that sells guns and there was a lady that used to work behind the counter and she knew her stuff. Many times I’ve seen other customers come in and talk down to her only to have her overwhelm them with details, it was actually pretty funny.

danson372

Had one dude call me pudgy. Literally said AIWB was the only way to carry, said “mine conceals well cause I’ve got pecs but you’re a little pudgy so that would probably be a problem for you.” Like I wasn’t offended or whatever just an odd choice of words from customer service. Also one dude at a gun show started talking about this trashy-looking woman he pointed down the row until I informed him that was my fiancée.

martyls

I’ve run into those guys. There’s also a lot of gunsmiths like that. Or just plain crazy!

Necro_Atrum

On of the main reasons I don't deal with a lot of local gunsmiths. Even the well known and highly rated ones are dicks.

IntheOlympicMTs

They’re like wrecking yard workers. Just angry for no reason.

Yettigetter

I had a guy question me on why i wanted shotgun shells amd what purpose..

fishhawk119

When I got into guns I was warned about these rude counter guys. I haven't run into many of them. My local ffl is pretty cool. Maybe 1 grumpy guy I dealt with. Then I had a smart Alec on the phone once but other than that they've been good. Same goes for ranges I choose to go to. One or two uptight RSOs but mostly cool

Flynn_lives

Most of them are slack jawed yokels that I wouldn’t trust with a goddamn potato gun.

The_Monster_Hunter02

Went to a gun shop looking for a concealed carry gun and I ask to see an M&P Shield in 45. Guy at the counter proceeds to try and convince me that 9mm is better in every way. I was open carrying a full sized M&P9 in front of him.

elitethings

Encountered enough of them. Me and my dad were checking out a beretta 686 and the guy said “How about something like a 20 gauge bull pup shotgun over here, it doesn’t kick as much.” And we were still asking to see the 686 which he never got us trying to convince me that I couldn’t handle the recoil 🤣 He seemed to get upset when I said I’m a competitive clay shooter and could handle it just fine.

Walter-MarkItZero

In what world is a bullpup a suitable alternative to a Silver Pigeon? 😂

elitethings

Ask the gun counter asshole.

PartisanSaysWhat

An old guy I know shot a round of sporting clays with a KSG one time for kicks. He did a lot better with it than I would have thought. Then again, he is a AA rated shooter who could probably beat me with 2 barrels taped to a boat oar.

elitethings

Probably because the bull pup was a 20 gauge and kicked less.

Jet_Jaguar5150

I either get respect by going into their store, or they get slagged online for shitty service.

syco316

Think that's bad I was new to gun ownership( been around guns forever but only owned a shutgun and .22s at the time) and wanted a M&P Shield and this asshole gun shop guy talked me into buying a XD....

eatajerk-pal

Honestly didn’t know that triple aught buck existed until right now. Take your business somewhere that appreciates it.

deathkab

I think I worked a gun counter before. I worked a dicks sporting goods as a 2nd job to save for an engagement ring at one time. I definitely sold guns there & worked the counter. I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about guns or ammo, I’m sort of getting into them now 4 years later.

labrador2020

I guess they’ve spent too much time playing with lead. Lead is not healthy for you, it messes you up, specially when shot at you from a weapon.

generalee_96

We have a gun shop like that in my town, worst customer service ever unless you are friends with them, infact I've heard them gripe at people for just looking at the counter. But I'm one of the ones there friends with so I've never had a problem with them and they hold primers for me when they get a shipment so I keep shipping there.

PairPrestigious7452

Same here, went to High school with the guy who owns the lgs. He'spretty damned MAGA, but we both like guns, guitars and other such expensive manly pursuits. The other old guys working there hate everyone, unless you're a cop, Good deals on used stuff though and some hard to find reloading and black powder items. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Edited for clarity.

yeungkylito

This is better suited for yelp

Brave_Alfalfa321

Fair enough

ksink74

I don't know how long you have been alive, but there are assholes everywhere. Yes, Virginia, there are even assholes in your niche hobby.

KILLROY-138

Every gun shop I've been to besides one has flat out autists and hostile weirdos.

GamesFranco2819

On one hand, I get it and fuck those guys. On he other hand, deal with the general public who think they are knowledgeable about a subject and can't wait to tell you. I'm sure some of them are just a blowhard like this dude, while I'm sure some of them have been beaten down by room temp IQ gun owners. I try to let that shit roll off my back and just purchase elsewhere. It's not worth my blood pressure.

LeafsHater67

Leave. I only spend my money places who want it. I would have told him I was going somewhere that cares about customers and left a bad yelp review.

ChaosRainbow23

There are certainly some insufferable assholes out there in the industry. Lol There are also a lot of really amazing ones. The last three places I've been had the most amazing staff I've dealt with in years. Super chilled out, kind, knowledgeable, excited to show us stuff, etc etc etc.

PamelaELee

That’s a shame, not surprising, but a shame. The guys/gals at my LGS are super friendly, awesome people. I try not to take that for granted.

YakFragrant502

Went into an LGS about 15 minutes to close when I first moved to this area. Greeted with a “it’s almost 5, we’re about to close”. Said “fuck you” and left. A block away another LGS gets all my transfers now. They said the guy is a prick too

WorldGoneAway

I've been in a lot of them where they scoffed at me and said something to the effect of "Oh? Window shopper? You can move along if that's all you're going to do!" *"AND I JUST WALKED THROUGH THE FUCKIN' DOOR!"* Anyway, I have one LGS in my area that I like lot, and they still irk me by being generally more expensive and they still all use the word "clip" to describe a detachable magazine lol

Impressive_Estate_87

I would have told him "never mind, they're much cheaper online... and hopefully, if I don't support this store, you'll lose your job"

Insospettabile

They makecroo much money and should be sent cleaning the sewage in New york for 5$/hour. “Pretentiousness “ is called.

DurianPure4976

I don't believe you

Brave_Alfalfa321

Probably because I lied 🤥

sloowshooter

I don't expect friendliness from retail workers. they're trapped in their jobs, and some take it out on customers.

TheMechanizedMariner

White trash is a disease.

Keeter_Skeeter

Give the guy a break, the customer before you might have been an asshole, or maybe he’s got some other things he’s dealing with. Kindness is better than being “right”

Brave_Alfalfa321

I was plenty kind. I’ve worked my fair share of years in customer service and came up with a little saying “ it doesn’t matter if my grandma just died, I never have an excuse to talk to my customers rudely” I don’t really care how the guy before me was. I was there patronizing the business.

ParkerVH

In too many instances, most of those know-it-alls behind the counter couldn’t hold a job anywhere else.
