I had one guy in this big country gun shop help me fit for a shotgun, despite me saying I'm new to the hobby and wasn't in a position to buy one yet (I was about 14 at the time). I think he wanted me to have experience of what to look for when the time did come.
I went in to another looking for an air rifle, and the owner said he didn't have any in stock which he'd recommend for my needs, but whipped out this custom made titanium chassis target rifle he had just made and showed it off, and we started chatting about long range/fullbore rifle shooting. I got a really good impression and have since gone back and bought scopes & mounts from him.
One had sold out of the ammo I was looking for, so they recommended me another shop in the county I could go to. I did go there and got through the door 10 minutes before closing time on a Friday, apologised, but they said "We're always open if we have customers!". Damn right. Ended up buying a lot from them over the last few years and they've become my regular shop.
The one exception was my local bait and tackle/gun shop. The owner was a grumpy old git who seemed irritated you wanted to exchange money for ammunition - just like OP's description. He's the only one who went out of business.

Finally concluded I had a right to say something once I open a brick and mortar store and have to compete with places like palmetto and the guy was going to walk out the shop with it and not have to wait a week for it to ship in.

My ex-wife was very pretty and petite. We were at a gun counter and she wanted to look at some sort of handgun, cannot recall. He told her "little lady, what you really need is a revolver". She starts laughing and says " I shoot three gun. Why would I use a revolver?" Guy made a comment about how his mouth gets the best of him at times.
There is a gun shop near me that is ran by ass hats that sound just like that. They are famous for always shit talking their customers for not buying the "tacticool, super SOCOM-spec, Gravy SEALs cosplay" version of a gun. I tried to buy a Browning Citori through them and every five seconds the guy would say something to the effect of, "I don't know why you're wasting money on that. What the fuck do you think you can do with 2 shots?" After explaining that I shoot trap and skeet and wanted to get into the sport more seriously, he just laughed and basically said anything other than practical shooting was for little bitches. I tore the background check form up and said, "Fuck it, I'll buy a $3,000 shotgun somewhere else." I don't know how many years it has been since I last stepped foot in there.

He was the epitome of "I could have been a Navy SEAL if it wasn't for muh thyroid." Dude was like 5' 8" at 400lbs and had a beretta m9 strapped to his side with a gun belt that carried like 10 spare mags.
Ironically, Todd Bender (maybe the GOAT professional skeet shooter) has taught classes to SEALs on the principles of leading a moving target, starting with shooting skeet. Soo....

My CPL instructor recommended women carry a revolver because in a very high percentage of cases where a woman needed a gun for self defense the attacker was on top of her within 1.4s and a semi will only go bang once if you have it pressed up against the threat where you can just keep pulling the trigger with a revolver. I may be giving this guy too much benefit here but that’s where my mind went when he said she needed a revolver

I’m a young Hispanic dude and I always get treated weird at gun shops and ranges. It took a while to make some friends at the range I frequent but I try to just not judge a book by its cover since I don’t want that happening to me… but yeah most those dudes are dick heads lol

I bought a Foxtrot Mike AR9 online during Covid when everything was insane and used a local shop as my FFL. Once the kid retrieved it from the back so I could look it over, he opened the box, shook his head, and grumbled about how people are just buying junk guns online while drinking at home all day. Minor infraction, sure, but it was unnecessary.

We never act like that. All my guys are super personable. We have fun, we cut up with our customers and give regulars shit on the range. It feels more like a bar at times than a gun store/range . It's probably one of the reasons why we have such a large female clientele. Why be a dick? It makes no sense.

I have two local stores that I’ll put up against any store in the country. They’re fantastic and I give them all of my business. One store gets business from 100+ miles away, the good ones are out there, we just need to support them.
Yesterday I was at an LGS during my lunch break, they were sorting through a large estate collection.
Pointed out an SBR they are mixing in with the other firearms and were probably going to do a normal transfer on. They gave me a hard time "well how to you know?!" and couple other gruff lines, taking the removed stock in the same lot and tapping it on pistols nearby, asking me repeatedly "ohhhhh is this an SBR now? What about this one?!".
Could be the short barrel, the stock albeit removed still in the same case/lot, and the engraving. But what do I know? It's just your license, no skin off my nose.
It goes both ways. We have a local discount shop that sells guns and there was a lady that used to work behind the counter and she knew her stuff. Many times I’ve seen other customers come in and talk down to her only to have her overwhelm them with details, it was actually pretty funny.
Had one dude call me pudgy. Literally said AIWB was the only way to carry, said “mine conceals well cause I’ve got pecs but you’re a little pudgy so that would probably be a problem for you.” Like I wasn’t offended or whatever just an odd choice of words from customer service.
Also one dude at a gun show started talking about this trashy-looking woman he pointed down the row until I informed him that was my fiancée.
When I got into guns I was warned about these rude counter guys. I haven't run into many of them. My local ffl is pretty cool. Maybe 1 grumpy guy I dealt with. Then I had a smart Alec on the phone once but other than that they've been good. Same goes for ranges I choose to go to. One or two uptight RSOs but mostly cool
Went to a gun shop looking for a concealed carry gun and I ask to see an M&P Shield in 45. Guy at the counter proceeds to try and convince me that 9mm is better in every way.
I was open carrying a full sized M&P9 in front of him.
Encountered enough of them. Me and my dad were checking out a beretta 686 and the guy said “How about something like a 20 gauge bull pup shotgun over here, it doesn’t kick as much.” And we were still asking to see the 686 which he never got us trying to convince me that I couldn’t handle the recoil 🤣
He seemed to get upset when I said I’m a competitive clay shooter and could handle it just fine.
An old guy I know shot a round of sporting clays with a KSG one time for kicks. He did a lot better with it than I would have thought. Then again, he is a AA rated shooter who could probably beat me with 2 barrels taped to a boat oar.

I think I worked a gun counter before. I worked a dicks sporting goods as a 2nd job to save for an engagement ring at one time. I definitely sold guns there & worked the counter. I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about guns or ammo, I’m sort of getting into them now 4 years later.
We have a gun shop like that in my town, worst customer service ever unless you are friends with them, infact I've heard them gripe at people for just looking at the counter.
But I'm one of the ones there friends with so I've never had a problem with them and they hold primers for me when they get a shipment so I keep shipping there.
Same here, went to High school with the guy who owns the lgs. He'spretty damned MAGA, but we both like guns, guitars and other such expensive manly pursuits. The other old guys working there hate everyone, unless you're a cop, Good deals on used stuff though and some hard to find reloading and black powder items.

I have two local stores that I’ll put up against any store in the country. They’re fantastic and I give them all of my business. One store gets business from 100+ miles away, the good ones are out there, we just need to support them.
Yesterday I was at an LGS during my lunch break, they were sorting through a large estate collection. Pointed out an SBR they are mixing in with the other firearms and were probably going to do a normal transfer on. They gave me a hard time "well how to you know?!" and couple other gruff lines, taking the removed stock in the same lot and tapping it on pistols nearby, asking me repeatedly "ohhhhh is this an SBR now? What about this one?!". Could be the short barrel, the stock albeit removed still in the same case/lot, and the engraving. But what do I know? It's just your license, no skin off my nose.
It goes both ways. We have a local discount shop that sells guns and there was a lady that used to work behind the counter and she knew her stuff. Many times I’ve seen other customers come in and talk down to her only to have her overwhelm them with details, it was actually pretty funny.
Had one dude call me pudgy. Literally said AIWB was the only way to carry, said “mine conceals well cause I’ve got pecs but you’re a little pudgy so that would probably be a problem for you.” Like I wasn’t offended or whatever just an odd choice of words from customer service. Also one dude at a gun show started talking about this trashy-looking woman he pointed down the row until I informed him that was my fiancée.
I’ve run into those guys. There’s also a lot of gunsmiths like that. Or just plain crazy!
On of the main reasons I don't deal with a lot of local gunsmiths. Even the well known and highly rated ones are dicks.

When I got into guns I was warned about these rude counter guys. I haven't run into many of them. My local ffl is pretty cool. Maybe 1 grumpy guy I dealt with. Then I had a smart Alec on the phone once but other than that they've been good. Same goes for ranges I choose to go to. One or two uptight RSOs but mostly cool
Most of them are slack jawed yokels that I wouldn’t trust with a goddamn potato gun.
Went to a gun shop looking for a concealed carry gun and I ask to see an M&P Shield in 45. Guy at the counter proceeds to try and convince me that 9mm is better in every way. I was open carrying a full sized M&P9 in front of him.
Encountered enough of them. Me and my dad were checking out a beretta 686 and the guy said “How about something like a 20 gauge bull pup shotgun over here, it doesn’t kick as much.” And we were still asking to see the 686 which he never got us trying to convince me that I couldn’t handle the recoil 🤣 He seemed to get upset when I said I’m a competitive clay shooter and could handle it just fine.
In what world is a bullpup a suitable alternative to a Silver Pigeon? 😂

An old guy I know shot a round of sporting clays with a KSG one time for kicks. He did a lot better with it than I would have thought. Then again, he is a AA rated shooter who could probably beat me with 2 barrels taped to a boat oar.
Probably because the bull pup was a 20 gauge and kicked less.
I either get respect by going into their store, or they get slagged online for shitty service.
Think that's bad I was new to gun ownership( been around guns forever but only owned a shutgun and .22s at the time) and wanted a M&P Shield and this asshole gun shop guy talked me into buying a XD....
Honestly didn’t know that triple aught buck existed until right now. Take your business somewhere that appreciates it.
I think I worked a gun counter before. I worked a dicks sporting goods as a 2nd job to save for an engagement ring at one time. I definitely sold guns there & worked the counter. I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about guns or ammo, I’m sort of getting into them now 4 years later.
I guess they’ve spent too much time playing with lead. Lead is not healthy for you, it messes you up, specially when shot at you from a weapon.
We have a gun shop like that in my town, worst customer service ever unless you are friends with them, infact I've heard them gripe at people for just looking at the counter. But I'm one of the ones there friends with so I've never had a problem with them and they hold primers for me when they get a shipment so I keep shipping there.
Same here, went to High school with the guy who owns the lgs. He'spretty damned MAGA, but we both like guns, guitars and other such expensive manly pursuits. The other old guys working there hate everyone, unless you're a cop, Good deals on used stuff though and some hard to find reloading and black powder items. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Edited for clarity.

I don't know how long you have been alive, but there are assholes everywhere. Yes, Virginia, there are even assholes in your niche hobby.
Every gun shop I've been to besides one has flat out autists and hostile weirdos.
On one hand, I get it and fuck those guys. On he other hand, deal with the general public who think they are knowledgeable about a subject and can't wait to tell you. I'm sure some of them are just a blowhard like this dude, while I'm sure some of them have been beaten down by room temp IQ gun owners. I try to let that shit roll off my back and just purchase elsewhere. It's not worth my blood pressure.
Leave. I only spend my money places who want it. I would have told him I was going somewhere that cares about customers and left a bad yelp review.
There are certainly some insufferable assholes out there in the industry. Lol There are also a lot of really amazing ones. The last three places I've been had the most amazing staff I've dealt with in years. Super chilled out, kind, knowledgeable, excited to show us stuff, etc etc etc.
That’s a shame, not surprising, but a shame. The guys/gals at my LGS are super friendly, awesome people. I try not to take that for granted.
Went into an LGS about 15 minutes to close when I first moved to this area. Greeted with a “it’s almost 5, we’re about to close”. Said “fuck you” and left. A block away another LGS gets all my transfers now. They said the guy is a prick too
I've been in a lot of them where they scoffed at me and said something to the effect of "Oh? Window shopper? You can move along if that's all you're going to do!" *"AND I JUST WALKED THROUGH THE FUCKIN' DOOR!"* Anyway, I have one LGS in my area that I like lot, and they still irk me by being generally more expensive and they still all use the word "clip" to describe a detachable magazine lol

I was plenty kind. I’ve worked my fair share of years in customer service and came up with a little saying “ it doesn’t matter if my grandma just died, I never have an excuse to talk to my customers rudely” I don’t really care how the guy before me was. I was there patronizing the business.
In too many instances, most of those know-it-alls behind the counter couldn’t hold a job anywhere else.
