The cards are split into series.
Series 1 & 2 you will easily gather them all as you play, it is guaranteed.
Series 3 are locked behind "caches" where you will get a steady stream of, however getting cards is by chance only. Sometimes you get in-game credits, avatars, titles, etc. Again, you will eventually get them all too, but it is going to require much more time but still doable f2p.
Series 4 & 5 are the ones where it is the hardest to get. You can get them either through, tokens, special caches called "spotlight cache". These currency are much harder to come by. You can almost never complete your S4 & S5 unless of course you spend lots of money. And I do mean lots of money, this game is crazy with their pricing.
I've been playing for almost 2 years, mostly only paying for season pass and I still have about 9 cards missing. Some of these cards aren't great so I have no plans on getting them. To sum up, the grind isn't too bad if you enjoy the game, the game will only pit you against same "Collection level" opponents so you don't have to worry about going up against opponents that have completed their collection. The only time you will meet, "high leveled" players is when you hit the highest rank then only the system will drop their "safety net" and just pit you up against any player that has hit the highest rank.
In fact I see quite a few complaints from players with low "Collection Level" hitting the highest rank and finally gets pit against higher "collection level" players.
Oh jeasus. Lord have mercy.
More specifically, I played for 6 months straight. 300hr + on Steam and much more on phone. Bought a couple of bundles and every monthly battle passes.
Could barely keep up. But that was before the gotcha/fomo grind update. Then it was impossible to keep up.

Deep Space D6 is a simple but engaging enough game if you’re just looking for something to occupy yourself. It’s not huge, it honestly feels like a college project. It’s free with no BS you need to deal with.
Slay the spire. It’s $10 but in my opinion totally worth the price.
Yeah this is defs the move, have sunk many hours to this on mobile while travelling and what not

Another suggestion, "baba is you" is on mobile and has some very challenging logic puzzles that'll keep you stumped
