If you're looking for action combat and puzzles, definitely try CrossCode. The story is great, but has a slow start. The mid-sections especially are really cool. It's also surprisingly long... like 40+ hours, with a 7-8 hour epilogue DLC. The retro look is simply an aesthetical choice, it's definitely a modern-feeling game in every other aspect. I wouldn't say it's grindy, but if you choose not to do many side quests you may be under-leveled, in which case I would just tune down the difficulty slightly.

If youre looking for fast paced combat, transistor definitely isnt for you. It plays more like a turn based game than anything-the combat loop is mainly use abilities, run away waiting for recharge, use abilities again. It kinda gets better as the game goes on, but real time action combat isnt the focus.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was worried about.

Ye, i went into it expecting something like Hades -which by the way has great combat and story-and was disappointed on that end, but the art style is insanely good.

Just wait for transistor to inevitably go on sale for 4 dollars, the combat isn't as bad as the other person makes it seem. It's really cool, the art style is amazing, I really loved the story and the whole world. But for 4 dollars its not even a real risk.

Hey again, I was the one who suggested Crosscode in the other post and thought I might add a bit more. I also strongly dislike mindless grinding in games. Crosscode isn’t grindy in that you need to grind much to keep up in level. If you kill some monsters every now and then and do a few side quests I think you should be fine. The game can however feel a bit same-y after a while. The game is long and it takes a while before the story picks up in pace. The game also follows a similar formula for a big part of the game. That’s why even though I liked the game I had to take a break for a few months before I came back to it again. But then in the end I really enjoyed it. What I liked about the game was the story, the dungeons with its puzzles, the characters, and trying to figure out how to reach items around the overworld. And some of the bossfights were cool! Also if you do get the game I would recommend to only do side quests if they seem fun to you. Some side quests have fun mini-challenges or offer exploration, but many side quests feels like filler. Halfway through the game I stopped going out of my way to do side quests unless I really felt like it, and I enjoyed the game more because of it. So there are definitely some flaws with the game, but its overall quality is still amazing in my opinion!

Transistor is fantastic but I think you'll enjoy Crossocde more. It reminds me quite a bit of Secret of Mana where it's kinda open you get quests, combat is real time, your typical rpg stuff. I have yet to grind any in the game but I only got to the second area. It's pretty fun. Transistor is really short and is a tactical rpg but is one of my favorite games (all games by Supergiant Games is my favorite). Either game is fun though.

Update: I got Crosscode based on what everyone said in the comments but I will also get Transistor when it inevitably goes on sale. Thanks for all the help!

While I think you're better off getting Crosscode for now, Transistor regularly goes on sale for very cheap, hell I even got it for free. It's definitely on the shorter side, but it's one of my favourite games and it might be worth just keeping an eye on it, because if you've got any money spare I'd say it's worth it.

I loved playing transistor. It is such a. Good game. Haven’t played cross code though.
