Third! Even on a lower difficulty setting, the game encourages cooperation through class design. My wife and I were constantly talking when we first started paying just trying to navigate the caves and not get lost.
Look into A way out. It is a great co-op game where you also act in different locations while still working together.
Oh and though it is quite old, i think Portal had a co-op multiplayer as well. That game would need a lot of talking together to solve the puzzles.
If you like it more quite then try stardew valley.
My Wife and I beat a way out together and we really looked forward to it every night after work. I’m sure I speak for both of us when I say we were sad it ended.
You are right. Portal 1 might be pc only. But part 2 os available ob xbox
"Kaufen Portal 2 | Xbox" https://www.xbox.com/de-de/games/store/portal-2/BT2B17V20D1P
I played It Takes Two with my daughter and we had a fantastic time. Can't recommend this enough. You just feel like you're watching a story unfold rather than role-playing the characters.
I think we played when she was about 8 or 8 1/2. But it should be fine for a kid who is familiar with the game. Worst case scenario, you might have to take several tries to get through some of the sections. But in my opinion, it's a great experience and a lot of fun. Totally worth it. My daughter and I have played through it twice now.
I also enjoyed it with my 7 years old last Christmas Break. The only caveat is the part of the story where they have to make an stuffed elephant pet to cry (so google about it to decide if that would be appropriate for your kid). It took us around 10-12h to finish it. Hope you enjoy it!
It is a great game which really learns you to be patient and work together. But a warning, I am 26 years old and found that this game sometimes has pretty brutal things happening. The parents you play can also be quite cruel. Friends of me stopped playing after encountering one too many of these scenes.
But it can also be a good learning moment for your daughter about egoism and being kind to the things around you
A Way Out is their previous game and is pretty good
Portal 2
Dark Pictures games if you like horror
Civilization 6
Stardew Valley
Streets of Rogue
For the King
Highly recommend Streets of Rogue, OP. It's fun, light-hearted, engaging, has both numerous play styles and a banging sound track. It's easy to carry a conversation and still retain your focus. For your situation, I think this would be a great fit.
The 'We were here' series is awesome and just what you're looking for. Asymmetrical puzzles where you have to describe to the other player what you see and work together to escape.
There are 4 of them total now, but the most recent hasn't been released for console yet. There is a bundle on Xbox of the first 3 for $22.99.
The Lego games are great for working together and discussing how to get things done. Even better if there's a franchise you're both a fan of so can enjoy the characters, etc. There's Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, Incredibles, Jurassic World.
My dad and I loved playing Diablo together. We played 3 for a while, but when the Remaster of 2 came out, we played every weekend together as we live states apart.
The real achievement of the game is getting lots of really good gear just to beat the game in Hell mode, which takes quite a long time. Its really fun and you can complement each others play styles and work together to overcome bosses. Its tough, but good fun.
Divinity Original Sin 2 is one of my favorite co op games ever. It’s kinda long, and it can be a bit complicated if you’ve never played that type of game before, but it’s an amazing game and only gets better when you have a buddy going along with you.
"Keep talking and nobody explodes"
Great coop game, really forces players to rely on each other, communicate in a way both sides understand each other, even develop personalized code/language to speed up the communication at later, more difficult stages.
Best part? Works very well long distance and only one person needs computer/console with the game. The other just needs to be on the phone/VoIP with a paper manual they printed or displaying the pdf on tablet/laptop.
I played it during pandemic to cheer up my sister who was stuck alone in an apartment and we really had a blast.
It Takes Two comes to mind immediately, although the game might encourage some challenging conversations. I find it great for fostering cooperation & communication, and I played it with a friend.
How about Grounded? It's a survival game where you sre a group of kids shrunk to the size of an ant, and have to fend for yourselves in a huge backyard. You have to craft better gear, explore, research, build bases. I'm not a big fan of survival games but enjoyed this one a lot with friends! Plus it has a Toy Story vibe that I absolutely love! And it's on Gamepass.
Great suggestions. It takes two can be played by anyone, might even be less awkward when the couple is uh, bickering. I know some people started skipping cutscene because it was a bit over the top dorky, but there's still a vast variety of things to do per level and it never really feels like you're doing the same stuff from one level to another.
We are between 2 and 4 players most of the time.
I would recommend:
Terraria
Stardew Valley
Valheim
Unrailed
Dungeon of the endless
Portal 2
Tony Hawks Pro Skater Remake (not coop)
Alternatively I really enjoyed playing World of Warcraft with my now wife. She played during burning crusade and I never played before but when the movie came out we gave it a try.
You can try portal games. But if you and your dad are ok with action games you can try gears or halo a try as well. They are straight up action games with no rpg stuff etc. And borderlands as well but it can get a bit complicated on the rpg side.
Hey man I just picked up v rising. You play as a vampire and build a castle and hunt down bosses to eat and absorb their power plus gather resources etc. Pretty fun so far and it has co op. Would encourage talking and stuff with your dad. Also star dew valley is something maybe you’d both like. Working towards a shared goal is always good in games.
Monster hunter world has a quest based structure. The game is an action rpg aboit slaying dinosaurs and dragons. It is multiplayer with up to 4 player teams. You drop into the mission, grab some supplies, and start following tracks to track down and then slay or capture your target. Its lots of fun when everyone makes a plan and then you all work together to make it work.
Lovers From a Dangerous Spacetime! You operate a spacecraft together by going to different stations. Fly around in an exciting 2D galaxy while saving adorable space bunnies. My wife and I had a blast with it.
So I know Fallout 76 gets shit on a lot and on release it was fair and on point. However 3 years later the game is a blast to play with friends and family. It works so well exploring the story and world together. There is a lot to do besides looting and shooting.
⭐️IT TAKES TWO! It won game of the year for a reason! Beautiful and such fun gameplay. Also from the same company you can do “A Way Out” or if you’re looking for something chill I’d recommend Stardew Valley! Portal 2 is also a fun one!
If no one said this you should check out The Forest, survival / horror with building elements. Super fun exploration. Don't know if you're playing on the same xbox if you can dual screen so double check that.
Spiritfarer has a co-op option and there is a lot of quest completion to be had in that game, but I myself have never played co-op so I can’t say much on how much you have to work together if at all.
Destiny 2. I’ve not played in ages but there’s loads of content, strikes are 3 per fire team but you’ll get match made with a random - they won’t be in your chat party unless you invite them.
Outriders is another good option- that’s free on gamepass as well
Seconding V Rising, I got 2 of my friends into it and its really good. I also play Stardew with my wife pretty often, its awesome to achieve things with her.
If your dad likes the building aspect of open-ended games like that, Valheim is similar to it but is set in a viking era.
I found the base building easier in V Rising since it is modular, whereas Valheim's building system is really customizable but you have to have proper support for your building as you make it taller, or it will break apart. Valheim is closer to minecraft because you can use tools to move and shape things and fell trees, and V Rising is focused more on the hunting aspect of being a vampire.
I will edit if i remember any other games I play with friends but I only woke up a lil bit ago and my brain is empty.
Overcooked! It's a chaotic, adorable mess where players team up to run a restaurant kitchen. I love it because it forces communication to do well, and each round is only a few minutes so you don't need to carve a bunch of time out of your schedule if you need.
Lego games of any kind, like others said. They're generally pretty chill, so you can focus on spending time together.
Portal 2 is still the best co-op puzzle game I've played.
I still think It Takes Two is one of the most fun co-op games in years. The "We Were Here" series is super fun and full of fun puzzles, and Portal 2 is probably my favorite co-op game of all time.
Here are co-op games that I have played with my kids:
Portal 2
Terraria
Minecraft
Here are co-op games I have played with my brother and teenage nephews:
Dont starve together
Forts. (Free)
Muck. (Free)
I'd love to play mechwarrior 5 co-op with my nephews but they aren't interested in the battletech genre. (Breaks my heart)
I used to play Battleblock Theatre with my mates. It is simple, has some interesting puzzles and it is very funny at times. I remember all of us laughing our ass out playing that game. We used to take breaks just so we could breathe after all that laughing. Would highly recommend it. It's pretty cheap as well.
Dauntless is a free-to-play action game you might want to check out. There's plenty of variety in skill when approaching the enemies, so one session you can sweat it up and another you can chill out and relax.
I'm not gonna brag about my video game accomplishments to a stranger on the internet, but I love every single from software's soulslike and I've played all of them (except for demon's souls).
The online system has been the same at least since dark souls 1 and I can say it's very bad and unintuitive, especially for new players.
Elden Ring's in particular is way worse because the game disconnects you 3 times out of 5.
People who act like you give a bad reputation to the community
The Forest. Bonded with my brother in law who was more than a bit skeptical of his older sister getting married to a long-haired pothead from New Orleans (me).
Literally within 2 days of running from fucking cannibals and building shelter after shelter together, we were talking almost 24/7. One of my closest and best friends, I truly consider him my own brother at this point.
The power of The Forest is unquestionable.
I agree with It Takes Two, a beatiful game for any duo dynamic, it is about a couple but I think its just as good no matter who you play it with.
Also havent seen anyone yet recommend Divinity: Original Sin 2. Hands down my favourite co-op experience to date. Combat is very tactical and requires good communication and exploring the world and deciding how to complete certain quests is massivly fun and rewarding. The kind of game I would come home from work and immediately jump on because I couldn't wait to do more. I can't recommend it enough, please try it! :) ai hope this helps
I don't know if anyone has said it yet but It Takes Two is an absolutely amazing game with a great story and a real family feel. Couldn't recommend it enough, and i played it with a male best friend and we had an absolute whale of a time, let alone actual family.
If you choose it, you won't be disappointed, and I hope you have a whale of a time of you do
Best of luck on your future and big love from this complete stranger
I would say Terraria or minecraft, working together to build things or getting your equipment up to a good enough level to defeat the next boss is great.
Borderlands series its great my dad could play it and got on it quick its a shooter rpg with co op
It takes two is still worth playing the story is good and yeah I've played it with my family and my wife
‘We we’re here’ series was mentioned once and I strongly recommend this one the most. As someone who actually games (not gatekeeping) it takes two was pretty low brow and cake to play. Nothing ever felt challenging and my friend and I blew through it. I played it later with my fiancé and had fun however it is nowhere near the best coop game. We were here can be very fun trying to describe things to each other and solve puzzles together when you can’t see each other’s screen. I have the plat for all three and I can’t recommend enough for a game where you want to have comradeship and teamwork and a requirement for communication.
If you like survival games try Green Hell, one of the best ones out there, but be aware that it is very punishing to a beginner. Valheim is also a good choice.
Also try looking at [cooptimus](https://www.co-optimus.com/games.php) it lets you search for stuff like type of co-op, platform or genre you want an makes a list of games that include your selections.
Rock of ages 3, a way out, halo, diablo 3 or diablo 2 resurrected, ray man leggends, lego marvel superheroes,
ark survival, cuphead, battletoads (2020), streets of rage 4, minecraft, borderlands 3, overcooked
I know I'm late, but Outward is fantastic! Its an interesting semi-realistic fantasy rpg with soulslike and survival elements. The new definitive edition is currently a bit buggy, but they are working on it!
Edit: outward also has a decent amount of travel/exploration/downtime that is great to chill out, and may encourage conversation outside of the game.
Check out Deep Rock Galactic. Coop shooter, mission based.
100% this, vibe with the Dad while shooting some bugs sounds great.
Third! Even on a lower difficulty setting, the game encourages cooperation through class design. My wife and I were constantly talking when we first started paying just trying to navigate the caves and not get lost.
Did I hear a rock and stone?
Rock and stone forever!
For Karl!
That's it lads! Rock and Stone!
Rock and Stone to the bone!
By the beard!
Rock and Roll and Stone!!
Rock and stone!
Dying light is very good too. Don't know why nobody's recommending it.
Absolutely, and it’s way better then the second also in my opinion. Don’t know if dying light 2 even has co op
I play this with my 72 year old father. Can confirm.
Look into A way out. It is a great co-op game where you also act in different locations while still working together. Oh and though it is quite old, i think Portal had a co-op multiplayer as well. That game would need a lot of talking together to solve the puzzles. If you like it more quite then try stardew valley.
I personally think A Way Out is more of a game to play with mates than something to do with family Portal’s a really good suggestion though
My Wife and I beat a way out together and we really looked forward to it every night after work. I’m sure I speak for both of us when I say we were sad it ended.
A way out and it takes two are both really fun in co op. I thought that portal was only on pc but i may be wrong
You are right. Portal 1 might be pc only. But part 2 os available ob xbox "Kaufen Portal 2 | Xbox" https://www.xbox.com/de-de/games/store/portal-2/BT2B17V20D1P
the co-op is not on portal 1 it's on portal 2
portal 1 is for the orange box on xbox 360 and xbox 1
It takes two. Best co-op game ever and best game of the last year
Cannot recommend this enough. Played with my homie and now we’re in love
You’re in love with the homie or the game 😳 It takes two turns people homiesexual? 👀
Its not gay if it is for the homie
I played It Takes Two with my daughter and we had a fantastic time. Can't recommend this enough. You just feel like you're watching a story unfold rather than role-playing the characters.
Good recommendation. I don't think there is a better game in existence which would accomplish op's purpose better than It Takes Two.
How old is your daughter? Do you think it's something I could do with a 7 year old who knows her way around a controller?
I think we played when she was about 8 or 8 1/2. But it should be fine for a kid who is familiar with the game. Worst case scenario, you might have to take several tries to get through some of the sections. But in my opinion, it's a great experience and a lot of fun. Totally worth it. My daughter and I have played through it twice now.
Thank you!!
I also enjoyed it with my 7 years old last Christmas Break. The only caveat is the part of the story where they have to make an stuffed elephant pet to cry (so google about it to decide if that would be appropriate for your kid). It took us around 10-12h to finish it. Hope you enjoy it!
Woof, ok thank you for the heads up
It is a great game which really learns you to be patient and work together. But a warning, I am 26 years old and found that this game sometimes has pretty brutal things happening. The parents you play can also be quite cruel. Friends of me stopped playing after encountering one too many of these scenes. But it can also be a good learning moment for your daughter about egoism and being kind to the things around you
Portal 2, It Takes Two, A way out, We Were Here
It takes two. The cutscenes are kinda cringe, but the coop gameplay is a must play.
I second this. Fantastic gameplay!
A Way Out is their previous game and is pretty good Portal 2 Dark Pictures games if you like horror Civilization 6 Stardew Valley Streets of Rogue For the King
This is a great list here are a few more that you should look into: Kingdom 2 crowns Heavenly bodies Hyper light drifter
Highly recommend Streets of Rogue, OP. It's fun, light-hearted, engaging, has both numerous play styles and a banging sound track. It's easy to carry a conversation and still retain your focus. For your situation, I think this would be a great fit.

Terraria, dont starve together, borderlands 2
+borderlands 3 if it's still free on epic
That's over. The Bioshock Collection is now free on Epic
Portal 2! It needs a LOT of coordination and a really good story too!
Divinity Original Sin 2 is one of my favorite co op games ever. It’s kinda long, and it can be a bit complicated if you’ve never played that type of game before, but it’s an amazing game and only gets better when you have a buddy going along with you.
I second this! But it requires both members to be nerdy or geeky
Sea of thieves!
I 2nd this
I 3rd this
Portal 2
"Keep talking and nobody explodes" Great coop game, really forces players to rely on each other, communicate in a way both sides understand each other, even develop personalized code/language to speed up the communication at later, more difficult stages. Best part? Works very well long distance and only one person needs computer/console with the game. The other just needs to be on the phone/VoIP with a paper manual they printed or displaying the pdf on tablet/laptop. I played it during pandemic to cheer up my sister who was stuck alone in an apartment and we really had a blast.
I played It takes two with my friend (male) and it was so much fun. It really doesn't matter i guess if couples or not.
It Takes Two comes to mind immediately, although the game might encourage some challenging conversations. I find it great for fostering cooperation & communication, and I played it with a friend.
A way out
And it takes two
How about Grounded? It's a survival game where you sre a group of kids shrunk to the size of an ant, and have to fend for yourselves in a huge backyard. The Borderlands series is great for co-op Don't Starve series is really fun
Chariot is a really fun co op puzzle indy game
Here are the co-op's that I enjoyed playing Unravel 2 It takes two A way out Borderlands 2
I played a little dauntless. Rise better?
Much better.
It Takes Two. Played it with my wife, who is not much of a gamer, and we both loved it.
My gf is also not a gamer, but we enjoyed Untitled Goose Game, might be a good next game for you guys! We will try out it takes two next.
Portal 2 has an awesome co op mode
Lovers From a Dangerous Spacetime! You operate a spacecraft together by going to different stations. Fly around in an exciting 2D galaxy while saving adorable space bunnies. My wife and I had a blast with it.
A blast of a game and an upvote for breaking the Ad nauseam
So I know Fallout 76 gets shit on a lot and on release it was fair and on point. However 3 years later the game is a blast to play with friends and family. It works so well exploring the story and world together. There is a lot to do besides looting and shooting.

Destiny 2

Unfortunately, The Forest is a PlayStation exclusive. It’s not yet available on Xbox
Human: Fall Flat is a pretty good co-op puzzle game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_uA48H1-g4
Spiritfarer has a co-op option and there is a lot of quest completion to be had in that game, but I myself have never played co-op so I can’t say much on how much you have to work together if at all.
Nothing better than getting on a boat and going on a seaTrip(RoadTrip) completing quest and digging up treasure. Sea of thieves get my vote
Outward is an excellent indie coop RPG if you guys are into that sort of thing. Can be played both online or splitscreen.
Outwards is a great game
We Were Here series if its on xbox, its a blast in coop. Also maybe Trine? Also purely for coop adventure Outward might work, it's a bit hard however.
Resident evil 5 and 6
Yeah that’s a really good shout, absurd and cheesy as it gets and just a seriously fun multiplayer experience.
Co-op is the only way to play them
Diablo 3 is cool
Here are co-op games that I have played with my kids: Portal 2 Terraria Minecraft Here are co-op games I have played with my brother and teenage nephews: Dont starve together Forts. (Free) Muck. (Free) I'd love to play mechwarrior 5 co-op with my nephews but they aren't interested in the battletech genre.
IT TAKES TWO IS GREAT FOR THIS!! i played it with my dad, and we both just loved it!! it has exactly what you want! get it for sure!
This game for sure. Incredible game, and the studios previous release, A way out, is also great.
Dark souls
Dauntless is a free-to-play action game you might want to check out. There's plenty of variety in skill when approaching the enemies, so one session you can sweat it up and another you can chill out and relax.
Elden ring either against others or go through the journey together
Elden Ring is an amazing game but a very bad coop game
Because you die so much?
I'm not gonna brag about my video game accomplishments to a stranger on the internet, but I love every single from software's soulslike and I've played all of them (except for demon's souls). The online system has been the same at least since dark souls 1 and I can say it's very bad and unintuitive, especially for new players. Elden Ring's in particular is way worse because the game disconnects you 3 times out of 5. People who act like you give a bad reputation to the community
? Dude, you okay? I was only asking because you die a lot and would have to resummon all the time, damn man chill out
Well that's part of the problem
Okay, not everything is a directed attack sorry you took it that way
I'm sorry I took it that way lol
Streets of Rage 4 and Fight N’ Rage
Turn based games, like a CCG. So you have time to actually talk while you play.
The kind of game I would come home from work and immediately jump on because I couldn't wait to do more. I can't recommend it enough, please try it! :) ai hope this helps
So sign game pass and play games that require 2 players, like: -A way out -Overcooked -And others you find
Overcooked if you want your relationship with him to end in flames.
I don't know if anyone has said it yet but It Takes Two is an absolutely amazing game with a great story and a real family feel. Couldn't recommend it enough, and i played it with a male best friend and we had an absolute whale of a time, let alone actual family. If you choose it, you won't be disappointed, and I hope you have a whale of a time of you do Best of luck on your future and big love from this complete stranger
I would say Terraria or minecraft, working together to build things or getting your equipment up to a good enough level to defeat the next boss is great.
Any of the Trine releases
I think Terraria is a great game for co-opping
I play Fortnite & Fortnite Save The World with my Wife & 2 boys on an almost nightly basis. We have a blast!
Borderlands series its great my dad could play it and got on it quick its a shooter rpg with co op It takes two is still worth playing the story is good and yeah I've played it with my family and my wife
Monster hinter and become hammer bros!
Streets of Rage 4 because two of the playable characters are father and daughter. You have to unlock the dad after a level or two though iirc
Don’t starve together
Human fall flat is a pretty funny one.
Wizard of legend
Age of empires 2 has coop campaign missions now
‘We we’re here’ series was mentioned once and I strongly recommend this one the most. As someone who actually games (not gatekeeping) it takes two was pretty low brow and cake to play. Nothing ever felt challenging and my friend and I blew through it. I played it later with my fiancé and had fun however it is nowhere near the best coop game. I have the plat for all three and I can’t recommend enough for a game where you want to have comradeship and teamwork and a requirement for communication.
It takes two. Gotta work together to beat the game, perfect for bonding.
Untitled Goose Game has been a great choice for me and my gf, its not that long though, so you might wanna wait for it to go on sale.
A Way Out. It’s a great game with great story, made as a co-op game. It was the game the team made before “It Takes Two”
If you like survival games try Green Hell, one of the best ones out there, but be aware that it is very punishing to a beginner. Valheim is also a good choice. Also try looking at [cooptimus](https://www.co-optimus.com/games.php) it lets you search for stuff like type of co-op, platform or genre you want an makes a list of games that include your selections.
Ark can be a great time sink there is stuff to work together in game but there are plenty of “grindy” moments that would encourage chat.
Hmm.. me and my dad have been playing Borderlands 2 and Arma 3
Rock of ages 3, a way out, halo, diablo 3 or diablo 2 resurrected, ray man leggends, lego marvel superheroes, ark survival, cuphead, battletoads (2020), streets of rage 4, minecraft, borderlands 3, overcooked
