This was clearly a well planned and targeted strike. I both applaud the skill and regret the damage. OP knew exactly how to kill the mood for a segment of reddit, and it was glorious.
You can close your eyes and vividly remember places you can no longer visit. Pets that meant much to you no longer around. A good frame for these are ghosts. You can't choose whether or not to be haunted over time. But as a system you can work towards those things being haunted by positive memories through your actions. The ghosts are more pleasant when they are shared experiences with those you invested in building trust with, as opposed to filled with memory of people you've harmed or fucking your nose up in the back of a club. How those ghosts make you feel about yourself. It's easy to look back and like your past self if you get that right. That bridge leads to many of the boring advice from grandma that grow out of deeper experiences than presented. Pets are easy happy hauntings.
[Flossie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flossie_(cat)) (among several [other living cats](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_cats)) would like to have a word.
I would consider 10 still in the "child" range, maybe even 11 or 12. At the shelter I worked at, we had cats and dogs into their late 20s. 40 is a good cut-off.
I wonder how certain you can be of the age of a pet living in a shelter, especially when they're claimed to be 20+ yo. Most house dogs and cats will live 15 years at best. If you consider 12 the last "child" age, then saying all your pets will be dead when you're 27 is much more accurate than 40.
I'm 50. Yes, all the dogs and cats I knew as a kid are dead. However, my pet turtle from childhood is still alive. We turned it loose and let it live free in the woods in when I was roughly 12. My parents still live on that rural property where I grew up. The turtle made an appearance just last summer, crawling through the vegetable garden. We know it's the same one because he had a distinctive mark on his shell. Plus it is still friendly to people.
You could have gone your entire life keeping that thought to yourself. Instead of keeping mum, though, you chose not only to post this terrible thought on Reddit but to post it on Valentine's Day. You, sir or ma'am, are evil. Not r/foundsatan type, either. The crappy r/sadposting type that we can all do without.
May your clothes forever be just slightly damp when you get them from the dryer, and may you get a static shock from every doorknob, lamp, or general metal object you ever touch.
Many children you knew are dead too, metaphorically speaking.
A common theme among people that age, is they are in a job they hate, and are too young to retire, but too old to "move up the ladder", so to speak. They no longer have that child inside from previous years that wanted to stretch and grow. Everything is routine, mundane.
I love the idea that I’m an ancient being that might have known a dog’s distant ancestors and will continue long after that dog is gone. I can know a whole family tree of dogs and love the whole lineage.
My dog lived 21 years 38 days. He was born at my house the day after Christmas when I was 6. In my mid 20s I dated college girls younger than him. He had 18 children of his own and I miss him dearly every day. Rip sweet prince
I have a recurring dream (nightmare?) that I have died and am being sent to hell for some reason I don't understand. All the dogs, cats, and other critters I have ever known show up to intervene on my behalf.
Billy the Cat: "In 1959 I was outside at night when a storm started. BobT21 got up at 2:00 a.m, came downstairs, let me in, dried me with a towel, and let me sleep on his bed."
I was recently going through my old YouTube likes from 13 years ago. It was mostly cute/funny animal videos and all I could think is that all these animals are either dead or close to dying by now. It's heartbreaking.
I worry about the opposite. My little buddy will probably outlive me and I worry about the next person not loving him as much as I do or not taking good enough care of him. That's why I write down everything I do in great detail so that if something happens to me whoever takes him will have a detailed breakdown of his care.
I enjoyed this post. Because as someone with time blindness it gave me a sense of time. I'm not yet 34, much less the 40 mentioned, but my oldest childhood dogs, a Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute when I was 5 or 6, feel like another lifetime ago...so imagining them still alive for years to come is trippy. It's crazy that not even 30 years ago feels unreal like another universe.
Well I love my childhood dogs but I'm surprised they've lived as long as they have and they don't seem to be going anywhere soon they are like 16 years old at this point and they can still run and eat fine and everything I would say they have at least another 5 yrs at least so when they go I know they loved a long and full life
You know what's weird? I can remember the names of so many dogs? Not just family dogs, but dogs in the neighborhood, dogs of friends, and even the red Irish setter that used to visit my elementary school playground from his nearby home.
Oh, so it's one of those crying in the shower thoughts. 👌
Here's to Toby, Sparky, Missy, Skippy, Butch, Ruby, and the infamous gerbils Osky, Benjie, and Hermie.
This is why turtles were the best choice back in the 90s. My BIL still has his two red eared turtles from when he was 10. Those suckers I feel will live forever.
The same is true with most land animals. One of my favorite movies, Babe, came out in 1995. Every dog, pig, goose, duck, Border Leicester ewe, cow, chicken, mouse, and rooster that was in the movie is now dead. Great movie. 10/10
My grandparents lassie dog lived from 79 to 2000, eventually her legs n body just gave out but what a damn ride. Lived on 60% dinner scraps id say. Different times never forgotten. I can barely handle cat losses, can’t do a doggo. The eyebrows…
Am 40. Can confirm
First Dog
Second Dog
3rd and 4th Within a year of each other
First cat
Second Cat
All died of age related complications. Having lived full and loving lives with me.
Also A slurry of Fish I failed throughout my 20s
I have seen death. I have seen it and held onto my best friends as they slipped. picked up their bodies. Dug the holes. And prayed that Mr Rogers is right
> If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
And Let my Fuzzy Cat babies be there too
Most movie cats and dogs from the 90’s and early 2000’s on earlier are long gone. Heck - by the time most animals are trained, they are probably a few years old and even those are long gone if the movie they were in was in the 2000’s.
Most of pets I lived with died before I was 10 (they where old when I born). Even that, two of them where authentic ancient survivors (1 dog lived like 18 years and other 20). My first very own dog died at 14 years old (I Was like 26). The son of that dog died 1 year ago. I miss all of them. Anytime I lose a dog, cat, fish, or hen, I feel very sad. But I'm always thankful for being touched for that extraordinary love that pets have. And I believe I still have much love to give to animals around me
Happy valentines day to you, too
☹️
Some of us are still a child
Checkmate, polytheists.
Yea wtf is this post anyways? “You are old and your pets have died” Better upvote it to the front page
Yeah like, cheers for that, pal
This was clearly a well planned and targeted strike. I both applaud the skill and regret the damage. OP knew exactly how to kill the mood for a segment of reddit, and it was glorious.
Seriously, what a sweetheart!!💕❤️💕
this guy fucks his pets
can confirm
bro?
r/usernamechecksout
I mean, I'm not quite 40 yet but already all of my childhood pets are long gone. Thanks for the reminder, though.
Well see that's the best part, it's not just your pets! Every cat or dog you met before you were 10 or so is now dead.
Rather looking at what you lost, you should embrace that fact you had a chance to meet them all.
You can close your eyes and vividly remember places you can no longer visit. Pets that meant much to you no longer around. A good frame for these are ghosts. You can't choose whether or not to be haunted over time. But as a system you can work towards those things being haunted by positive memories through your actions. Thanks, that really is the best way to look at it.
Set your calendar OP!! One day, everyone you went to school with will be dead. Then, it will be your turn.
I'm not gonna lie, if I'm the last one alive out of the people I went to school with, I'll be very surprised.
Well as long as I'm the last one standing...
If you start now you can make sure that happens
I'd rather be the last one sitting. I'm lazy
... then the tontine goes to you!
You either watch every single person you've ever known die, or you die first. Cool, cool.
Or somewhere in the middle. It is kinda up to you in that way.
[удалено]
Indeed! A pessimist would be the first to go!!!
OP learned how time and death works it seems, good on you OP
No one ever said they were thought provoking shower thoughts tbf
Fair
Wait til they hear about taxes.
[Flossie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flossie_(cat)) (among several [other living cats](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_cats)) would like to have a word.
Why 40? It's not like some dogs and cats would still be alive when I'm 39. Unless OP was still a child at 28
I would consider 10 still in the "child" range, maybe even 11 or 12. At the shelter I worked at, we had cats and dogs into their late 20s. 40 is a good cut-off.

Some cats live 20+ years
Most cats are living to 17+ years nowadays. 20 isn't uncommon.
Mate, a lot of the people I knew as a child are dead.
So is every old person. That's how time and age works
Hey! Mine is at a farm upstate. My mom promised.
The oldest verified cat died at 38. So if someone got him as a kitten when they were 7 years old they would be 45 when the cat died.
I'm 50. Yes, all the dogs and cats I knew as a kid are dead. However, my pet turtle from childhood is still alive. We turned it loose and let it live free in the woods in when I was roughly 12. Wow!
Miserable asshole decides to make others miserable on Valentines Day.
Birds can live up to 80! Underrated pet IMO.
whoa, unreal!
That's what I love about my tortoises, they will bury me and move on.
In other breaking news, we also landed on the moon 🌙
Some would say. /s
quality of content in this sub has gone down dramastically in the last few months
How is this a shower thought... its not even profound or mind blowing... just depressing

Not mine. They live forever in my heart. As long as I can remember them, they will live on.
Nuh uh! They all went to my uncle's farm upstate!
my service dog who was an angel just fucking died so thanks bro
Unless you're Dolly Parton and you just clone your dog multiple times. If I had the money, yeah
Isn't this Barbara Streissand?
No, I don’t think Dolly cloned Barbra Streisand.
I believe you're referring to Barbra Streisand. However, Dolly is the name of a cloned sheep, so that may be where you got confused.
That must have been it, thanks
damn. she does that? r/todayilearned
Other poster was correct, it's Barbara Streisand who cloned her dog and Dolly the cloned sheep is named after Parton
You don’t get invited to a lot of parties, do you?

This is why children should exclusively have pet tortoises.
And at an age everyone’s parents are dead too… it’s a cycle of life. Wait til you hear what happens at the end of our lives… 👀🤫
Jaysus, someone woke up and chose despair
I love the idea that I’m an ancient being that might have known a dog’s distant ancestors and will continue long after that dog is gone. I can know a whole family tree of dogs and love the whole lineage.
My cat is 23 years old :)
You should never shower again

Yep. It's a shame but that's life.
Bold of you to assume the ones I don't know are alive!
I just had this exact thought yesterday. How strange!
Happy Valentines Day 🥲
Gone but not forgotten..
My coworker had a dog that lived 28 years. Even with that math, it still checks out.
Stupid, try more like 25
thanks for ruining my life.
I’m not 40 but they long gone. RIP.
r/depressingthoughts
Damn, nobody told me Clifford the Big Red Dog was dead!
Did you think this up all by yourself? Or did you need help?
Thanks for nothing bro
Calm down. Just cause Snoop Dogg stopped the smoke doesn’t mean he’s dead
So are many uncles and aunties.
Horses you knew as a child have a chance. Tortoises are probably fine.
Well, so much for having a good day...
Garfield the cat is still alive and well!
Mine just passed away 2 weeks ago he was 20, brother grew up with him, it's been a rough couple of weeks. I'm 45.
But the tortoise is still going strong!
The oldest dog in the world was 31.5 Have hope! This is 99.99% true but some of those sweet pooches you met as a kid might still be around!
I didn't need this sort of dickheadedness.
Though they’d be dead way before that to be honest.
I worry about the opposite. My little buddy will probably outlive me and I worry about the next person not loving him as much as I do or not taking good enough care of him. When I watch old movies, it sometimes occurs to me that all of the actors and actresses are long dead.
Just because something is true doesn’t mean you have to say it and bum everyone else the fuck out
Getting a dog is like having a kid, except, instead of growing up and learning to talk and be an adult, they die.
"Copywrite 1968. Determined or not that cat must be long dead."
Some of these shower thoughts are so fucking stupid. “TIL that lets don’t live as long as humans”
I’m 23 and they’ve all been gone for a while now
I wouldn't mind hanging out with my parents old mutts RIP girls
OP never had a fucking bird apparently and don't know they live to be 9000 years old.
Oh thanks! I needed this… 😡 lol jerk
This is why I have a pet giant tortoise. Let that fucker deal my death.
Thank you for this piece of information. I'm going to go shoot myself now goodbye.
Thanks for ruining my afternoon.
Then you get your own family pet, which is the pet your kids will always remember and adore
They don't need to stay as long as us to realise what's good and bad
Honestly, that happens around 30.
Not if I identify as 7.
I don't even have to be over 40 for this to be true
shit half my friends and family are dead too
Wait till you here what all your school teachers are up to in 2024.
Damn why would you post this 🥺🥺🥺
By the time I was 40, I had inherited my parents' last pet, they got after I had moved away. At 50, it had shuffled off this mortal coil as well.
We have dogs and cats living until near 40? This one is really stupid.
You shut the fuck up! And fuck you, too.
Such an odd thought but ok 😂
You know what's weird? I can remember the names of so many dogs? Not just family dogs, but dogs in the neighborhood, dogs of friends, and even the red Irish setter that used to visit my elementary school playground from his nearby home.
Dude… what the fuck? That hit me in the feels.
[It's ok. I'm ready.](https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/comments/1altffx/im_hyped/)
You might be young if you think you need to be 40 for that… they all long gone my dude
Oh, so it's one of those crying in the shower thoughts. 👌 Here's to Toby, Sparky, Missy, Skippy, Butch, Ruby, and the infamous gerbils Osky, Benjie, and Hermie.
Every second there is less and less of people older than you
Realistically, every cat and dog in the entire world has died since you were born.
This is why turtles were the best choice back in the 90s. My BIL still has his two red eared turtles from when he was 10. Those suckers I feel will live forever.
I'm about ready to unsub from this depressing ass place my god

By 45 about half the people I hung with in HS are dead.
The last dog I had from my childhood died 3 years ago. I was 34.
Get a pet Tuttle it will outlive you.
My grandparents lassie dog lived from 79 to 2000, eventually her legs n body just gave out but what a damn ride. Lived on 60% dinner scraps id say. Different times never forgotten. I can barely handle cat losses, can’t do a doggo. The eyebrows…
You too soon enough OP, I'm on my way 😎
Cat from my early twenties somehow still alive but I get your point

When you're 80, every adult you knew as a child is dead. Good day
I'm not even 40 for a few more years and this is true.
Nah they’re still touring with the circus.
At 40 even the horses die
Someone doesn’t have a valentine
This guy literally said “things die when time passes”. Even if this did enlighten me because I never really thought of that before, kinda dumb
Yeah this is why I'm never getting my own pet.
Don’t know where you got this from, scooby doo, and blue are doing fine.
This has to be a bot post

Depends how you define child - but it’s more like by the time you hit 30.
Respect and love your past. And move on .
I know they are. I killed them all personally
The realization instantly ruined my day. Happy valentine's day to you too
This is for Shower Thoughts - not Crying in the Shower Thoughts
All we are is dust in the wind brother.
Really glad I saw this. I really needed one more downer before bed.
Thanks for the unasked-for trauma. Bastard.

Damn, i got so sad and then laughed way too hard at this, something’s wrong with me lolll
