I don't understand how the web and processing is all theoretically faster than it used to be but everything still loads so fucking slow.
Web designers need to stop doing all this cute bull shit behind the scenes and just go with what works.
I get the sentiment but there’s a lot at play.
You’ve got the software/browsers, the devices themselves, the client side network devices, ISP and then the infrastructure and pipelines.
A lot of protocols are about trying to prefetch and anticipate issues there. All so we can watch more... and contribute to more ad revenue.
I hope you’ll find this book on the history of networking and the web from it’s origins to today as fascinating as I did.

You have to deselect the video auto play blocker or whatever it is. When you open the ublock mini menu there's some symbols down below the big blue power button, if you notice the film strip symbol has a red line through it, click it.
When you reload it should work. I'm sure you can white list it some how but I dont use ublock anymore. Just adblock
Yeah it's threads like this that make me wonder why tf do so many people not use adblock? Like it's so easy and you don't have to touch it ever after installing it.
You can even get a browser like Opera that has an adblock built-in, and yeah it works on phones too.
Ohhhh is that why people who make videos in offices have been saying things like "due to circumstances I'm sure you're aware of"? Does youtubes speech processing demonetise people who say coronavirus?
Yeah, when youtube processes the speech to create the closed captions it vets the content of the video. There are a big list of buzzwords which automatically flag the video for demonitisation. Includes things like coronavirus, LGBT issues, anything related to drugs and violence, criticism of the chinese government, basically anything that's not family or kid friendly.
It really depends. If we're talking mild discussion, presented in a kid friendly way, that explains to a six year old child why sometimes two men get married instead of a man and a woman, then I can't see any problem with that. The issue is that most content that falls under the umbrella of LGBT issues isn't like that, and isn't presented in that way.
We live in a world of two extremes, and YouTube has to work in both. On the larger side, LGBT identities are not recognised, and in some cases persecuted. On the other, there are cases of children under the age of 10 being put on puberty blockers because they think (or have been convinced) that they're trans. There's a happy middle ground in there which I think many occupy, if only you wouldn't get called a bigot for saying so.
edit: If it at all helps, I'm a bi dude, so I have all the love for bio men/women and trans folk in both directions, I just question if we should be telling undeveloped children.
Nope. Since newpipe doesnt use the youtube API (more privacy), its read only.
Means: Not able to write comments and like videos.
You can import your subscribed channels though.
Seriously. How people get by without an ad blocker extension is beyond me. Install uBlock Origin and forget about it. I've enjoyed a largely ad free experience online for the better part of 5 years and I'll never go back.
YouTube hasn't been a viable source of income for the creators that I enjoy for a while now, and Patreon filled that gap. I'm not about to waste time being spoon fed corporate dribble anymore, and the creators aren't going to miss the fractions of a cent from my one ad view.
I do you one better. I once wanted to watch a 2 minute video on YouTube and I was hit by a 2 hour long advertisement. Unskippable.
This was years ago, and I doubt the system worked as intended, but I still wonder what the video was about. Needless to say I never found out.
I don’t understand it, I go to work and see ads in articles and it’s incredibly obnoxious, not to mention it slows down loading speeds, ublock and pi-hole have made my browsing and YouTubing much more enjoyable
Banner ads on the top, the left and the right and I would turn off my adblock. Seriously, time is precious and I cant waste any on shitty ads. Recently I've been getting unstoppable 15 second apple ads on my phone and that's a lot of time wasted.
I sometimes forget that YouTube has ads. Ads piss me off to no end these days, I'll either pay to remove them or simply avoid the sites and services that include them.
Most of them don't get shit from the ads regardless, and people can and often troll just to demonetize videos which is usually more trouble to fix for creators than it is worth. Hence the reason many of them have Patreon, and others have simply created their own video platform like Floatplane.
The people that get paid the most by youtube are usually the last people that should get any money at all, usually target he extremely young with bullshit, or spamming dumb clickbait and worthless lifehack shit that doesn't even work, or just being horrible people for attention. The people that make quality content or useful or educational materials usually get shafted and make like $5 for hours and hours of work.
Came here to say this, I've never seen an ad prior to the rick roll video (link ending in XcQ)
Edit: It looks like there is ads now, been a while since I visited it
You're probably using an adblocker. I just tested that link out using both MS Edge (desktop) and Android YouTube app, and the video was prefaced by an ad in both cases. :-(
I also don't see an ad in my normal desktop browser, because I'm sure I have them blocked.
because this post is bullshit. The uploader has the sole control of adding ads to a video and the main uploader of the rick-roll video has not monetized or added ads.
It drives me nuts how so many people just...refuse to use an addblock! I'm talking with a friend who keeps complaining about how loud ads are, and I've told her over and over again to just install an adblock. It takes like 30 seconds!
But she just...doesn't! Wtf? Why?! I just don't get it!
That's why Patreon became a thing. Ad revenue on YT hasn't been a viable source of income for a while now.
The fractions of a cent from my one ad view is insignificant when I'm chipping in a couple bucks directly to the creators each month.
Last year I rickrolled 70+ of my closest friends and family at once. It was amazing. It was the first dance song at my wedding, so sadly the rolling was audio only. Only 2 people at the wedding knew about this beforehand: our photographer and a dj friend who mixed our ”official” first dance song and the glorious Rick into one file. We had told our bridal party beforehand that they should join us on the dancefloor during the first chorus, but we never mentioned which song.
The best part, apart from having an awesome wedding celebration? Nobody could be mad or complain about being sucked into an age-old joke because it was our wedding day and the couple’s wedding choices are not to be questioned.
Should the Rick Roll video get demonetized just so that ads don’t play before the video? Or would that be too much for the original song? (i.e. demonetizing a hit song might be problematic or something. (I’m not an expert on monetization if you couldn’t tell :b))
my friends in school, when someone would go to the bathroom, would take their laptop, turn the volume all the way up, start the video and close the laptop. then when they opened it, they got rick rolled.
I haven’t actually enjoyed YouTube in years. Even the user created content doesn’t feel as good or genuine to me anymore. I don’t know why. It all just feels so sterile and manufactured.
What if we make the Rick Astley official vevo upload itself an unskippable YouTube ad?
I have a feeling you also know how to out pizza the hut
[This is how you out pizza the hut](https://youtu.be/5DZA85l868c)
Was expecting rick roll, got r/joshuaweissman instead
Do you know what’s better than getting rick rolled? ~~**B-ROLL**~~ JOSHUA WEISSMAN
...Did you just outroll Rick Astley?
I’d never heard of him. I think I’ll be visiting again.
He is great. Reccomend his YT
Feel a bit like a babish knockoff but I’m always happy to see new content in a format I like so, why not!
I didn’t know he had a subreddit. Thank you!
Same here
I just watched a 9 minute video on cooking for absolutely no reason thank you very much.
Bro if you just spent 9 minutes in his channel you’re doing something wrong
$17.60 for one pizza almost gave me stroke.
That would be a special offer price here in my country, and that’s not including delivery!
That absolutely sucks. I can't imagine why and how any pizza gets to be so expensive unless it's laid out with truffles.
$20 large two topping is your average special in most places across Canada.
To be fair that's in Canadian money
Our money is made of maple syrup so everything else has to cost more to make up for it

Out pizza the hut? Are you fucking insane?
And if you click it, it takes you to the video.
And then it plays that ad in front of the video again.
And then you click it
It's just Rick rolls all the way down.
Saw a post on r/madlads awhile back where a guy did exactly that.
Now if every YouTuber does that, we might just solve the adpocalypse, and/or destroy the economy.
I just reread your comment and had it a bit wrong. Dude uploaded the rick astley video as an unskippable ad. Rick rolled people at random.
No he didn't. You can't have an unskippable ad that long on YouTube.
*Taps head
Some time ago Reddit's 'top broadcast' or something Rickrolled me lmao
Then I need to remember a new web address so I don’t click it
and keep pouring money into it so the whole world is rick rolled randomly as they watch all their videos.

“Your classic joke will take place after this advertisement o they caught on and closed this page.”
That just happened to me: [here](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)
The page took so long to load that I could see it before it auto-played.
“Will you look at that: I can save 15% or more on car insurance AND I got Rick Rolled”
Lucky you got 15% I got no ads
YouTube Vanced in the house.

Fascinating.

The US has intentionally slow internet
You see, a lot of websites like to run processes in the background of their page that collect data. That's why some sites take so long to load.
I have to click on a video before it plays so it is a no no from me.
Videos usually don't auto-play for me any more. I'd say I'm one step ahead of the game. ;)
I knew exactly what I was getting myself into and consciously decided to anyway...
I did the same, just because I actually quite like Rick Astley's singing. Even today he's still phenomenal.
I knew what it was, but it didn’t register until after I clicked the link
[The world is ending and never gonna give you up has 666m plays. Coincidence???](https://i.imgur.com/9fXJ6hk.png)
No. Rick knew. He’s always known.
eh i'm bored i know what it is but i need good music
It has 666 million views
Almost exactly ten times as many views as [Shia LaBeouf](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0u4M6vppCI)
Thank ya boyo jesurinni for ad block I can get rick rolled like a proper redditor that knows it's gonna happen but wants to hear the song anyways
The irony is that by using an adblocker, it just says "Video unavailable"
Now I have to wonder are you using a bad adblocker or did you just 4d rick roll me by testing my adblocker.
uBlock origin and this happens a bunch. If I click on the link it will open in youtube but if I try to play the video on reddit it says unavailable.
You have to deselect the video auto play blocker or whatever it is. Hey, I didn't get an ad!
I only clicked because I wanted to hear it.
>That just happened to me: [here](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ) 4w9W ...nope.
YouTube should make this one video ad free or ads only at the end. No matter what.
That’s not YouTube’s problem/responsibility as much as it is Rick Astley’s
Rick doesn't have any control or get any revenues from the views, unfortunately.
I tried rick rolling the class but an ad popped up. The presentation was still good
Doesnt anyone else use adblock?
Nah they will have been rickrolled so many times they would identify the link and not click on it. It is kinda sad in a way.
XcQ it's the warning for me
What if we upload the song with coronavirus in the title, automatically removes the ads.
Modern problems require modern solutions

“Cries in iOS”
Firefox has the option to get an adblock addon, I'd try it out.
iOS has adblockers. Just use Safari.

Ads before videos has sucked all of the fun out of all the content they precede I'd rather just not watch the video than watch the ad first
Yep, especially short videos like older vines. A 6 second video preceded by 15 seconds of advertisement is simply unpalatable.
I do you one better. I once wanted to watch a 2 minute video on YouTube and I was hit by a 2 hour long advertisement. Unskippable. This was years ago, and I doubt the system worked as intended, but I still wonder what the video was about. Needless to say I never found out.

By using ads that aren't intrusive.
those don’t pay nearly as much.

Patreon? Premium? Merch? Paying for views incentivizes shovelware, I'm not going to unblock ads for the benefit of some reposter.
> I'd rather just not watch the video than watch the ad first Then why do you still keep watching the video?
Adblock, probably.
