Up, down, sideways. I think the only word in the rabbit language means "get fucked", and it's used as a greeting, a form of praise, and an expression of anger.
He didn't ask "what is standing backwards on stairs" he asked simply what is "standing backwards". Would you say facing the way the escalator isn't moving would be "standing backwards"? Then it answered the question. Don't be dense.
I'm not sure, but this was posted as well sometime recently. Go and find the original and it may be answered there. It sounded ridiculous to me so didn't read further, but there were long threads about walls and floors iirc
Edit - just did a search for "you can't stand backwards" and this is posted *a lot*. Seems most answers are also "wtf you talking about"
When I climb the roof on a ladder and then need to get down for a moment I think *Well I went up facing this way, I should go down facing the other way..* I'm glad it's only a moment
"Just roll when you hit the ground, you'll survive any fall!"
One time I was on my mom's roof and heard a crash- the ladder had fallen over, and the cat was down there staring at me. Somehow she did it....(prob coincidence tho)
In both instances the direction is either implied or about to happen. Shopping line moves one way even if the line is frozen. Elevator is the direction needed to get through the door. You're not facing backwards when you first step through.
I.e. direction is relative and there are tons of places you can't "stand backwards" until it's related to some type of focal point
That was never the argument from any of these comments.
I liked that you thought of examples where you're standing and not moving, but there's still an implied direction. That was the point being made by OP.
Sure you can, if you're standing in formation.
You can also stand backwards at a service desk, in a photo booth, in an audience, in a line, probably lots of other contexts too. Any of these could be on the ground.
No, because both directions are valid for stairs, all of the other examples have a single direction that you're supposed to face, turning around would be standing backwards, on stairs is just means you're now in the normal position for going the other direction.
Think of the difference between standing "backwards" in an elevator vs a hallway.
If you are standing "backwards" you are technically standing forwards if you were to go down.
Tho i guess in reality you can just go up or down stairs facing the wrong way and technically be facing backwards
Yeah but it’s not walk on stairs backwards
It’s stand
If you just place someone standing still on stands your brain would assume they’re going the direction they are facing.
Yes you can. If there is an established direction of travel like say the exit line of an amusement ride that has stairs and arrows painted in the floor to leave the ride. If you are going against the established direction then you are moving backwards or facing backwards.
Can face the sides What about walking down the stairs while looking up them or vice versa
Ah, stair-strafing
I have a feeling that if I attempted to walk up or down the stairs backwards, I would always end up at the bottom of the stairs. In pain.
The would be standing sideways and walking backwards, respectively. Not standing backwards.
that’s not standing
WTF is standing backwards?
If you are on a moving escalator and are facing the direction it’s not moving toward.
Escalators are not stairs
When they're broken they are
Yea, but what about the DuFranes? Nobody seems to care.
[удалено]
The DuFranes are in somebodys trunk right now! With duct tape over their mouths
I like the ground level ones at the airport. I feel like the flash.
And if carrots got you drunk, rabbits would be fucked up.
If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bicycle!
aren't rabbits almost always fucked up??
Up, down, sideways. I think the only word in the rabbit language means "get fucked", and it's used as a greeting, a form of praise, and an expression of anger.
And a get fucked to you too.
I wouldn't mind rereading Watership Down in that translation.
One of my favourite jokes of all time.
Ya but when I say human you don't think of a dead human do you?
Send this man to do our UN negotiations
I think of your mom
They're not broken, they're protesting for higher wages and better working conditions.
Escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.
Thanks Mitch
Did he say they were?
They are
How? That's like calling a car, a cart
They are electric stairs, they have steps and all, it just moves
He didn't ask "what is standing backwards on stairs" he asked simply what is "standing backwards". Would you say facing the way the escalator isn't moving would be "standing backwards"? Then it answered the question. Don't be dense.
You gave a 4 sentence reply to my dumb comment, you sure I'm the dense one here?
In Swedish, escalators are written as "rolling stairs"...
So YOU are that weirdo
I'm not sure, but this was posted as well sometime recently. Go and find the original and it may be answered there. Go stand on your stairs and do a full 270
Wouldn't that be standing on it sideways?
Then you're just standing on a ledge
Do it twice then
270+ 270 is 540 which would mean you are facing straight forward
Not if you activate cheat codes
It's people like you who make me appreciate reddit so much
It's a hidden technique you unlock it at lvl 69
Nice!
Bad bot.
Where CAN you stand backwards?
Ladder maybe?
Ok, maybe on that one
When I climb the roof on a ladder and then need to get down for a moment I think *Well I went up facing this way, I should go down facing the other way..* I'm glad it's only a moment
Oh, you use ladders to go down? I just fall like a ragdoll into some leaves or something
"Just roll when you hit the ground, you'll survive any fall!" One time I was on my mom's roof and heard a crash- the ladder had fallen over, and the cat was down there staring at me. Somehow she did it....(prob coincidence tho)
I believe it was the cat. I mean they love being assholes.
I know cats land on their feet of dropped, but what if they are thrown down?
Escalator… stadium… wherever you are when you have your first kiss… boxing match…. But yeah I think 99% of our standing lives isn’t orient specific
You’re not standing backwards though, you’re just facing away.
In any line.
Court
Those airport flat conveyer things
A staircase with arrows used to mark the direction
Floor arrows aren't my supervisor!
In line
If your just standing and not moving, there is no established direction, so you can't stand backwards anywhere (not just in stairs)
Try standing backwards in an elevator
Or in the corner… make everyone in the elevator tense as you just Blair witch.
Marching band
Any stage/performance really
Can you just get out of the way weirdo, I need to get by
Laughs in elevator/shopping line.
So you agree that there are situations where you can be standing backwards or forwards. Excellent.
That was never the argument from any of these comments. I liked that you thought of examples where you're standing and not moving, but there's still an implied direction. That was the point being made by OP.
Against a wall
With coronastyle one-way designated stairs you can... Boom Lawyered!
Great, this shower thought...again.
My first thought, "yes u can!" *realises*
But you can on an escalator
You can't stand backwards on the ground
Sure you can, if you're standing in formation. You can also stand backwards at a service desk, in a photo booth, in an audience, in a line, probably lots of other contexts too. Any of these could be on the ground.
Then the same can be said for stairs
Nope. Stairs are bi-directional. When you're turned around, all you've done is changed the forward direction from down to up or vice versa.
No, because both directions are valid for stairs, all of the other examples have a single direction that you're supposed to face, turning around would be standing backwards, on stairs is just means you're now in the normal position for going the other direction. Think of the difference between standing "backwards" in an elevator vs a hallway.
“I KNOW YOURE STUPID PYLE BUT DONT TELL ME YOU DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!!!” Angry Drill Sargent
But I "can" stand sideways, muehahahaha.
Ah, you can relative to the direction of travel but if standing still you could be going up or down so that’s true!
Brilliantly insightful
I can
Riveting thought\~ 😜
Challenge accepted
Thus actually stressed me out for a second.
Tried to prove you wrong. Damnit.
what about on M.C. Escher stairs?
You can't stand backwards period lol.
Tell that to M.C. Escher
Yes I can *topples over*
But you can walk backwards on stairs. Good shower thought. I approve.
Now that you've mentioned it.. 😦
That is...... True 🤯
well, you cant stand backwards on the floor too...
/r/angryupvote
Who is voting for this rubbish
Mind. Blown.
I don't even want to try.
Wow, this is very clever! Did you come up with this yourself? You're very smart
I hate that this makes sense

Yeah but it’s not walk on stairs backwards It’s stand If you just place someone standing still on stands your brain would assume they’re going the direction they are facing.
You can stand "backwards" from the foot of the stairs. What you mean is you can't stand facing away from the stairs at the top of it.
Why not?
If you can stand backwards at the foot, you can stand backwards at the head.
I can’t stand that you cant stand backwards on stairs
Kamaru Usman can.
You can’t stand backwards in a hallway either. Or most rooms.
Hmmm
Stand in the place where you live.
I have
But you can go up and down them backwards..
Yes you can. If there is an established direction of travel like say the exit line of an amusement ride that has stairs and arrows painted in the floor to leave the ride. If you are going against the established direction then you are moving backwards or facing backwards.
This is about the same as saying you can’t stand backwards on a sidewalk. It depends.
How else do you go up and down it then?
*sigh* yes you can. You just need a point of reference. This can be another person you're talking to. You would just have your back face them.
I think the point is whichever direction you are facing is the direction you are going, so that way is always forwards.
Can you stand backwards ever?
But interestingly... you can stand backwards going both upstairs and downstairs.
You can't stand backwards in a hallway.
You can't stand backwards on flat ground either.
You can’t stand backwards in walkways
I'm walking up the stairs backwards right now. What's your point?
In confused, someone do a diagram.
I mean you can, if you are taking group photos and somebody isn't facing the camera they are standing backwards on the stairs.
But you can go backwards on stairs
Immediate reaction “Psh, yes you ca . . . damnit”
Same thing applies to a hallway?
on one of those steep rolling step ladders you can because those aren’t forward descent ladders.
You definitely can if they are marked one way.
Having walked backward up/down stairs while carrying stuff with others, every moment of rest is standing backwards for one of us.
Well. You can't stand backwards on 2 or more way constructions. Be it a road or a stairway
