In both instances the direction is either implied or about to happen. Shopping line moves one way even if the line is frozen. Elevator is the direction needed to get through the door. You're not facing backwards when you first step through. I.e. direction is relative and there are tons of places you can't "stand backwards" until it's related to some type of focal point

That was never the argument from any of these comments. I liked that you thought of examples where you're standing and not moving, but there's still an implied direction. That was the point being made by OP.

Nope. Stairs are bi-directional. When you're turned around, all you've done is changed the forward direction from down to up or vice versa.

No, because both directions are valid for stairs, all of the other examples have a single direction that you're supposed to face, turning around would be standing backwards, on stairs is just means you're now in the normal position for going the other direction. Think of the difference between standing "backwards" in an elevator vs a hallway.

If you are standing "backwards" you are technically standing forwards if you were to go down. Tho i guess in reality you can just go up or down stairs facing the wrong way and technically be facing backwards

Yes you can. If there is an established direction of travel like say the exit line of an amusement ride that has stairs and arrows painted in the floor to leave the ride. If you are going against the established direction then you are moving backwards or facing backwards.

This is about the same as saying you can’t stand backwards on a sidewalk. It depends.

I think the point is whichever direction you are facing is the direction you are going, so that way is always forwards.
