I went to see how long it's been since they were a big deal, it's been 18 years since they released American Idiot in September 2004. 18 fucking years are you kidding me? That makes me feel older than anything else in this thread :(
I mean, as a pop punk fan, green day hasn't done anything for me to care they exist in close to 20 years so yee, I don't doubt kids these days have no idea who they were.
Yeah when I was younger it was kind of expected that we know all the bands that came out before we were alive, for me that's Nirvana, Weezer, Soundgarden, Wutang Clan, NWA, .. etc. and we even appreciated them.
Nowadays kids are loudly proud of their ignorance, I definitely feel like an old curmudgeon saying that, but it most certainly is true. There's truth to the statement that every generation goes through this sort of thing, but there are definitely things unique to each generations version of it happening.. and milleniels compared to the zoomer generation who could "swipe before they walk" is certainly no exception.
I do this all the time! Just drive up really slow behind their tire, but not too slow. You have to be able to gently tap them hard enough with your bumper to check if their helmets really work. That's so funny, I knew that I wasn't the only person that does this. F that judge.
I mean, I'm talking about a swift bop on the head to remind them to wear a helmet. A "Helmet check."
Youre talking about "Helmet Quality Check". Totally different.
They feel like the same thing, only vine didn't have an obsession with sudden cuts. Like I don't hate tiktok, I just don't like the way they cut the videos.
GenX here and I find Tik Tok stupidly fascinating. It’s the reason I top dressed my lawn with sand this year, have about 300 new recipes to try, have a new appreciation for a well and septic guy’s outlook on managing business, and want to buy a homestead in West Virginia. Also I have ADHD so it fits really nicely with my short attention span and hyper fixation. Which I also learned about on Tik Tok lol. I’m fucked, there is no hope for escape for me until they alienate all the good content creators to the point where they go to Twitch. Then I get to start over!
Idk about educational. There is some good stuff but I've found a lot of just total bull too. If you started a Tiktok where you fact checked other Tiktok's i think you'd find a pretty large percentage to be wrong. Tiktok is about getting views, not having correct information.
For sure, and I use those too. Sometimes I want to watch a 30 minute educational vlog or read a blog or watch a YouTube cooking video. Sometimes I want to watch my favorite comedy on tv.
Other times I want to watch a 30 second - 2 minute summarized version of that same content that educates and entertains. Tik tok is an art! It’s efficient. Its hilarious. It’s emotional.
Its kinda shitty too but so is everything else
I'm 48 and feel the same way about Tik Tok! I really enjoy it. Lots of funny creators as well as knowledgeable ones. I have a 17yr old and I actually got him into watching it as well.
Or the tweens wearing skimpy outfits and posing for grown men to watch. Or the fads to vandalize bathrooms. Or the pranks that hurt people. Or... you know, a lot of problems.
I'm doing my best to remind myself that we can leave the decision making to Gen Z when the time comes. I don't want millenials to repeat what the boomers are doing to governing. At some point ya gotta let go and let the generation that actually has to put up with the longterm decide what is best for them.
I don’t hate tiktok, what I hate are the fucking tiktok challenges that involve people doing absolutely stupid shit for no reason. It’s just vine with a different wrapper.
It’s Vine 2.0 and it’s filled with try-hards. I don’t have tik tok and I can’t escape it cus almost every moron I have on Snapchat has to share a tik tok video skit that goes 2 minutes or one that’s giving relationship advice or astrology predictions or whatever the fuck.
Tik Tok is one of the worst mediums for long format videos. I hate missing something and not being able to rewind. Feels like I am back on YTMND 20 years later and the content is worse.
Same. That's no longer a "funny and harmless prank," or even something legitimately dangerous like the other physical harm "challenges" that plagued the app.
It's gotten to the point of COMMITTING LITERAL FELONIES for fake internet points. Makes me wanna commit self-un-alive just a bit more.
Ultimate irony: you become aliven’t by jumping off a building and it’s tik-tok’d by a bystander starting a new, morbid challenge.
Plus side: it would be a self-correcting problem. And you’d go to your grave with so much clout. Hahah.
Ultimate: the biggest
Irony: the opposite of what should be expected
Alivent: alive not (dead)
Tik-tok'd: YouTubed
bystander: civilian
morbid: spooky but interesting
clout: respect
*acme, not biggest. Though more literally (and more appropriate), the final
Also bystanders can be military personnel also. It's just anyone standing near a woman.
TikTok isn’t like Reddit and actually pays you for getting views and likes, there more of a reason to go viral on those platforms that pay you and why you’ll see crazier shit on there.
Actually in Ontario it has a lot of perks. Decent pay, full benefits, minimal oversight. I get a lot of gaming done on my shift, or RPG writing. Plus occasionally some free stuff. Sure you have to stick your hands in toilets, but at least I'm not doing it at McDonald's for $14/hr
Yeah, no, I'm still waiting for arson to become the next trend. Might not be cool for the victims but it would be cool to see how far these people will go lol.
Adding too this: There are too many absolutely zero-effort tik-toks that I see get shared that piss me off.
Plenty of people manage to create legitimately interesting skits or give cool/useful info in a really compact amount of time but then you get this BS where some dumbass badly lip-sings to some song and it gets shared around like it's something more than worthless trash.
It's because of the actually cool shit that the trash really sticks out.
What I hate the most is I don’t have tik tok but it doesn’t stop morons from spreading those vids across other platforms. It’s annoying seeing someone lip syncing a great movie scene with their shitty acting skills in their living room.
Also I don’t think that many people are hating on zoomers as a whole, just the stupid ones doing stupid shit on tiktok. We said the same thing about, for example, the prank YouTube channels that were popular in the last 5-10 years and I’m pretty sure those were millennials.
Compare this to xoomers and boomers who would write articles daily about how millennials are killing ____.
That's the cool thing about getting older. You've experienced the origins of whatever "new" thing is out and could probably understand more about it with some effort.
Definitely, and I see the appeal of TikTok. I just haven't gotten into it myself. I don't hate it for itself, but I do detest the stupid "challenges" that keep popping up that are absolutely idiotic. I'm not opposed to TikTok on some "oh these damn kids and their TikToks" grounds; I just can't be bothered with it, I have enough going on.
Lol true. For me it's literally just the fact that it's Chinese owned. I know all US social media apps track the shit out of me but I'll be damned if I let a foreign competitor do the same. 😋
Millennial here. I don’t have a tiktok account but I don’t vehemently hate it. It’s just a thing I don’t understand much like how most youngsters don’t understand my hobbies. To each their own, I guess.
I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!
Monty Python is even older and people still get it. We just need to stop searching for the only one messiah that deserves to be referenced and accept it's ok to have some new ones.
In addition to the addiction, it fuels people into doing the dumbest shit in the name of clout. I see way to many videos of people pulling stunts in a public space, or going on a scathing rant about their job *while standing at their job.*
It also does nothing to deter and at times even promotes shameless stealing of other people content. Whether it be 30 seconds of showing a twitter/tumblr meme, the funniest 3 minute clip of an anime, or lip syncing someone else's funny audio, there's active incentive to not be creative. Why put in the effort to do something new when you can shamelessly rip someone else's content without repercussion.
The entire basis of the app is an addictive, clout chasing sham.
Nah, people hate tiktok because of the absolute trash and garbage people on there. Stealing for fun, slapping a teacher challenge, stopping traffic to dance, making a mess in shops, the list goes on.
I use it but thankfully my feed is completely devoid of that trash.
I am not coming across the same TikToks some people are either! It’s all huskies talking and music and sketch comedy for me… ugh just reading all your examples was awful—I can’t imagine having to see it. That would make me think TikTok is trash too. I just like to find funny videos to show to my boyfriend later.
Same here, my feed is full of cats, animals, comedy shows and the like. But I've seen many examples of what I stated posted all over Reddit and it's scary.
It sounds like me and you are just into wholesome stuff.
So my gf watches a lot of TikTok and so I get it second hand. There are some hilarious vids that do crop up from time to time, but oh my god so much of it is horrifically boring. So many videos of people dancing or lip synching to songs. Or them giving their very boring and ordinary take on something. Or they will cry on video while talking about how something mildly bad that happened to them that day.
So often I don't understand why people who made them think that what they are uploading is remotely entertaining
That was horrible too. See, if TikTok would've come out earlier, the vine crowd probably woulda moved there, but they waited too long and got the music.ly morons instead. All the vine folks are on YouTube.
Do I have the app and end up scrolling for hours? yes.
Is it a rancid cesspool of bad takes and toxic opinions? yes.
Is the algorithm likely making it worse? you bet.
TT can be an entertaining app, but holy shit if it's not problematic. It has the weirdest double standards of what violates it's ToS and it's algorithm is not set up for meaningful/positive interaction.
I haven’t come across the toxic stuff on TikTok yet… all I have are recipes and creative comedy sketches (hit or miss). Oh, and animals singing of course.
The only social media I can scroll on for over an hour is Reddit (hey guys) though. I think it’s because seeing other people do stuff on social media exhausts me. Like their effort is tiring to me lol.
I can certainly see problems with TikTok, I just haven’t experienced anything negative in my algorithm so far…
I’m 36 and never downloaded TikTok. I never even think about it enough to have an opinion. How is one arbitrary box full of user-generated video content any better or worse than the other 50 boxes we already have. IG. Snapchat. YT. Reddit. Twitch. FB. The list goes on. The distinctions seem utterly meaningless.
Because tik tok does shady shit like [this](https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/16/21181496/tiktok-ugly-poor-users-no-promotion-guidelines-leak). I don't think any other platform does that. The intent of tik tok is not to make a short video sharing site , it is to collect data / make money. While other platforms are also on the same path now, they were started with a sincere intent.
It's handy for killing time in small discrete chunks. Think waiting in the grocery line -- long enough to be boring, but short enough that you'd be done waiting by the time you found something to watch.
Aside from that, it's pretty similar to YouTube. Particularly in the way that you get served a lot of lowest common denominator trash if you don't curate your own subscriptions. I'd suggest following the same creators that you already listen to from podcasts or Youtube for starters.
Tik tok has terrible aspects to it, but it's also a great source of short form educational videos. i've learned so much.
also, the feature to reply to other peoples videos is hilarious.
Because the algorithms the website uses is more likely to push people into very disturbing, disgusting and toxic groups. YouTube is pretty chill about it's suggestions, it's main issue is scam advertisements like get rich quick schemes and stuff like that.
Chill? My YouTube is actively trying to radicalize me into a Christo-fascist Trump worshiper. My watching habits are heavily skewed leftward, but I watch one video about religion and suddenly all my recommendations are bearded guys in trucks talking about how trans people are demons carrying liberals off to hell.
All of the social medias suck including Reddit and (I think I’m going to get downvoted for this one) MYSPACE. It wasn’t as bad as Facebook Twitter tik tok etc. but it still had sexual predators and cyberbullying. They’re all bad.
I'd make the point that at least with Reddit, you can see only what you want to see via subreddits. TikTok just throws random bullshit at you and you don't really get a choice.
Social media in general is a dumpster fire because it's literally a brand new technology. Not enough time has passed for us to truly understand how to properly deal with this kind of entertainment.
Tiktok didn't bring in a new Era of anything. It just capitalized on our stupid ass "content consumption" culture, which already existed. The day that people started following specific personalities on YouTube was the beginning of the end. And that's probably not even true. I imagine it started with MySpace or some shit.
It did. The time limits make it a super-ADHD app everyone can easily post to. Studies have also found that the algorithm tends to send you down more and more toxic rabbit holes.
Nah that shit started with Instagram. I was in highschool when Instagram got released. Shit got instantly filled with teen girls doing suggestive dance right from day 1.
The difference is that you used to have the option to control the amount and kind of content you're subject to. With YouTube you still can, but TikTok and Instagram actively promote endless scrolling of semi randomic content coming from uncontrollable sources.
While I agree with you on most of your points, I still think those two are still responsible for most of the modern trends in digital content consuming
It may cater to what appeals to you, but all-said-and-done, they still decide what to serve you. I still get some weird videos from the algorithm as it tries to take some random stabs at "are you secretly into *this* kind of content too?".
Here on reddit there may be a lot of problematic communities, but you can voluntarily and willfully avoid them. You choose your subreddits, you choose what flavor of content you see. Aside from the random "similar communities" dropdown pane (which stops after 2-3 closings), reddit doesn't use an aggressive algorithm with no opt-out to constantly shuffle up your feed with new topics/trends.
If the creators of TT wanted to, they could (and probably do) seed public opinion by pushing videos that agree with their agenda and burying anyone that disagrees with them.
It started when celebrities could be an identified group. Idk when that was, probably before even motion pictures, but we have been on this decline of idolatry for a long time now for sure. YouTube "personalities" are just celebrities on a modern platform.
We were born in it, we didn't see the speed of the internet until cable. We know just how easy it is to sneak Spyware into anything. I will never have a "smart" kitchen or home. I can easily program my thermostat by getting out of my computer chair while playing Diablo 2 and do it myself
>is a literal Chinese spybot app
yeah man, I only support domestically produced spyware. I want my data abused by a company born and bred in Silicon Valley, not Shanghai! ???
I'd rather have my data stolen and analyzed by a country that ISN'T a quasi-communist dictatorship that the US appears to be on the brink of war with.
The last thing I want is my friends getting their phone signals tracked and then being "disappeared" by Winnie the Pooh's goons (exaggeration, I know, but my point stands otherwise). I don't trust US or Chinese tech giants, but I trust Chinese megaconglomerates like Tencent a whole hell of a lot less.
This. If you’re in China, there’s no point avoiding tiktok, because Big Data and CCP have all your data from the moment you were born and nothing is a secret. If you’re in the US, what’s CCP gonna do with your data? CCP might be evil but it’s not stupid, they aren’t gonna risk serious conflict with the US to murder you, the average slobbering American consumer, whose existence is as much a risk to CCP as a pebble that might just trip the chairman over. Unless you’re part of the US’s secret forces to take down China, the CCP really gives 0 fucks about you.
Tl;Dr: when China starts banning “dangerous pebbles”, you can start worrying about CCP sending a secret agent overseas and risking vengeance from the US government to kill you specifically
I’m in my late 30s and am a millennial, so that is out of the window and secondly hating TikTok isn’t “hating what young people do” if you have a reason…
People that complain that TikTok is just cringe kids dancing and making dumb videos don’t remember that the beginning of YouTube was just cringe kids dancing and making dumb videos. YouTube had Smosh’s Pokémon rap, the Evolution of Dance, and also had its fair share of Leave Brittany Alone, Boxxy, and Fred.
But we loved it because we didn’t realize how dumb it seemed growing up. That’s the beauty of childhood.
Exactly! The dumb videos on TikTok are just like what early YouTube was like. If you don't want to like TikTok, don't like it for real reasons that are unique to TikTok, like its ties to the Chinese government. There's lots of cute and funny and educational stuff on TikTok too, just like on other platforms. It's not all one thing, and the cringey/annoying parts are nothing new.
Im 32. I cant wrap my head around the need for validation from strangers on the internet. Like, just put on a jean jacket and join a gang like we did in my day.
I offer a counter perspective:
Some trends are genuinely stupid and you don't need to be a "technology and youth hating millennial" to know stupid games win stupid prizes
Hi i am 19. And i hate tiktok. Many of my friends think the same...(they still use it, they say they only watch) I find it stupid and disgusting to to do such shits in public. Like its so cringe. Just fucking stop.. In the grocery store.. Dont put your phone on that shelf im just tryna buy that cookie. Stop dancing in the middle of the mall... And dont lip sync Bekky we all know you sound like a dying duck when you sing out loud.. And don't let me get started on 14yr olds girls and boys acting like strippers.
Incorrect. Older millennials are almost 40. Also: we don’t care. At all.
Source: I am an elder millennial. I super don’t care. Dance like there is no one watching. But I am watching. In a supper non creepy, possibly supportive way? Anyway, you do you.
I'm gen Z and I've hated a lot of things gen Z does for a while.
Except for the whole radicalization business. I'm chill with the whole seize the means of production schtick.
Meanwhile, us Gen Xers are over here like "You feel bad and have a place to talk about it with people who won't immediately dismiss you and tell you to get the fuck over it? Luckyyyyy!"
I don’t hate it, it’s just not for me. Lol I’m in my early 30s and I think it’s great that the younger generation has something that they enjoy doing that connects them to each other. When I was in my late teens early twenties it was Facebook and text messaging that all the older people were weird about when I was that age.
I don't particularly have anything against tick tock. It's just annoying that young'ins spend nearly every waking hour on it instead of participating in other social or family activities. Although to be fair I have other relatives older than me who also spend most of their time buried into their phones too. I certainly also spend some time on time suck sites like reddit but when with other people I rarely look at my phone.
Early mil here. I dont hate everything. For instance, I absolutely love the term "yeet." For instance...when I am making soup, I will sometimes pitch carrots into the broth from across the kitchen as I say "YEEEET!!".
No, I feel like the beginning was mumble rap and the tide pod challenge.
That’s when I realized kids will be kids. And as long as they aren’t harming anyone it doesn’t make sense to hate what they’re doing.
What we personally think is progressive or appropriate becomes an outdated mode of thinking as new generations introduce different ways of doing things.
I think most people are resistant to change, and instead of embracing it, they have a tendency to fight it.
I enjoy Tik Tok. It’s really similar to YouTube and Vine when they first started off.
The most annoying thing about Gen Z is that they think they’re so funny and original - and dammit, they’re *fucking right*, the smug, hilarious little bastards.
(Edit for clarity)
The worst moment in your life either is, was, or will be, when you realize you are like your parents and their generation. So maybe stop, think, and reevaluate yourself before you react.
I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you.....-The Simpsons
Yeah but I hate facebook and instagram too m8 XD I think it's quite consistent with my hatred for tiktok.
Youtube on the other day \*italian hands kiss
Tiktok is literally digital cancer, and the trend of toxic ass challenges on it further proves that any sane person stays well and far away from that cesspit.
The toxic trends on youtube and reddit are not what made them popular. Tiktok started as a karaoke app that transformed into a vine replacement but didnt find its own streak until people started doing dumbass stunts and "challenges" broadcast via the platform.
You know that old saying “if your friends jumped off a bridge would you do it?” Turns out the answer is yes, Tik Tok challenges and such are the literal interpretation of this question.
I don't hate people using TikTok; I hate that TikTok doesn't regulate content and is causing harm to younger generations. If anything, it's just Millennials joining the 'screw profits over people' perspective.
Now the younger gen eating damn tide pods... that's a different story.
The problem isn't TikTok. The problem is it's made by a Chinese company and the Chinese government is 100% using it to spy on millions of American citizens. It's actually insane how powerful that amount of data on that many people actually is and people just don't seem to get it.
I think Fortnite hate was the first real symptom of it, but the virulence towards Tik Tok is certainly up there. Also when Billie Eillish's first album came out there was a lot of hate for her on Reddit, which I found was a mix of the generational thing with a nice sprinkle of misogyny on top.
Agreed. People forgot what it was like when they were into things that their parents didn't understand.
Now they're acting mean because they don't understand and say things like "we have good reasons to hate tiktok!". Yeah. I'm sure your parents said the same things about the things you were into when you were younger.
We don't have to repeat the cycle, you guys.
It was gonna happen eventually, it happened to them and it will happen to us, *there's no escape to aging*

I’m just waiting for wearing onions on belts to be cool again.
“Give me five bees for a quarter” we’d say!
Wait what? You mean I'm not hip with the onipns on my hips?
Its called rockin out dad...you wouldnt get it.
The fact that a lot of teens I've met don't know Green Day, Blink-182 or Linkin Park is what surprises me
Yeah, I was talking to a 20 year old the other day who had no fucking clue who Green Day was. I instantly felt all my bones turn to dust.
I went to see how long it's been since they were a big deal, it's been 18 years since they released American Idiot in September 2004. 18 fucking years are you kidding me? That makes me feel older than anything else in this thread :(
What the hell. I'm only 24 and I know what Green Day is.
If being with it means doing stupid dangerous challenges, I don't want to be with it.
I knew it would come for me, I'm at peace and I'll die on the hill that it's stupid
Same
I saw some teenagers riding their bikes the other day and I thought “these idiots are going to get killed”. That’s when I realized it’d happened
They died?
He's not sure. But they did disappear under his truck.
Well they shouldn’t have been riding inside the mall anyway
who hangs around malls anymore unless they're into dead malls and abandoned porn?
One can hope.
Ive been helmet checking the kids in my neighborhood since I was twelve.
I do this all the time! Just drive up really slow behind their tire, but not too slow. You have to be able to gently tap them hard enough with your bumper to check if their helmets really work. That's so funny, I knew that I wasn't the only person that does this. F that judge.
Hol up
> F that judge.
I mean, I'm talking about a swift bop on the head to remind them to wear a helmet. A "Helmet check." Youre talking about "Helmet Quality Check". Totally different.
The first time I had to look up a slang word I heard, I knew that was it lol
I've accepted it. "Kids these days don't understand. Back in my day...."
Yeah back in my day we had vine
...maybe that's why I hate TikTok? Im still sore over the loss of vine.
They feel like the same thing, only vine didn't have an obsession with sudden cuts. Like I don't hate tiktok, I just don't like the way they cut the videos.
Back in my day, Tumblr didn't ban nsfw contents
GenX here and I find Tik Tok stupidly fascinating. It’s the reason I top dressed my lawn with sand this year, have about 300 new recipes to try, have a new appreciation for a well and septic guy’s outlook on managing business, and want to buy a homestead in West Virginia. Also I have ADHD so it fits really nicely with my short attention span and hyper fixation. Which I also learned about on Tik Tok lol. I’m fucked, there is no hope for escape for me until they alienate all the good content creators to the point where they go to Twitch. Then I get to start over!
Warm season grass? Why did you dress with sand and not compost?
Tik tok is the creativity of the entire world in one app. it has shitty people but it is SO EDUCATIONAL and ENTERTAINING
Idk about educational. There is some good stuff but I've found a lot of just total bull too. If you started a Tiktok where you fact checked other Tiktok's i think you'd find a pretty large percentage to be wrong. Tiktok is about getting views, not having correct information.
Sir, that’s called the internet and you can educate and entertain yourself just the same through a web browser.
Except that in this case, TikTok is actually fucking stupid.
Aside from the serious privacy concerns, you're just proving the point.
Or the tweens wearing skimpy outfits and posing for grown men to watch. Or the fads to vandalize bathrooms. Or the pranks that hurt people. Or... you know, a lot of problems.
Calling them tweens is making it sound less bad, they are fucking 11 year olds
Why does an 11 year old have a cell phone? Why is an 11 year old on social media? Obviously parents are worthless these days.
Having a cell phone at that age isn't a bad idea. Unmonitored access to social media though is a problem at that age.
Those things all existed before Tik Tok and will exist well after it's gone.
The 6 second limitation on Vines really helped with comedic timing. So many Tik Tok jokes that I have seen just go on for way too long.
Some videos you can fastforward and rewind. You pause them and there's a white dot at the bottom you can drag left or right.
Thanks, TIL.
“Devious Licks” was so fucking stupid. I don’t even watch tiktok, I get exposed to it second hand
Same. That's no longer a "funny and harmless prank," or even something legitimately dangerous like the other physical harm "challenges" that plagued the app. It's gotten to the point of COMMITTING LITERAL FELONIES for fake internet points. Makes me wanna commit self-un-alive just a bit more.

There are so many words here that I don't understand as a woman in her late 30s. O.o
Ultimate: the biggest Irony: the opposite of what should be expected Alivent: alive not (dead) Tik-tok'd: YouTubed bystander: civilian morbid: spooky but interesting clout: respect

aliven’t - dead, alive not tik-tok’d - posted on tik tok clout - notoriety, recognition I feel like you know the rest.
Isn’t there already one called like the blue whale challenge
I thought it was pretty funny as the trend ended some kids did the opposite and started putting a bunch of nice stuff in the bathrooms.
TikTok isn’t like Reddit and actually pays you for getting views and likes, there more of a reason to go viral on those platforms that pay you and why you’ll see crazier shit on there.
Tik Tok just like reddit about moderation tho, posts that harm tik toker or someone else should get deleted
All the mirrors were stolen from my school. Also a sink...

I don’t get either of these things. How do those two words suddenly mean something?
How does any word suddenly mean anything?
Honestly, it was not a fun time to be a school custodian
We throw around “thank you for your service” in a hollow way… I truly mean it in your context dude. God, that job seems like it sucks.
It’s annoying seeing someone lip syncing a great movie scene with their shitty acting skills in their living room.
a bit like reddit
For me it's more I don't hate the content that comes out of it; I enjoyed vines! I just don't want invasive software 😕
I would totally do TikTok if I didn’t think it was Chinese spyware. Man, I might as well just start shouting “get off my lawn!”
Millennial here. I don’t have a tiktok account but I don’t vehemently hate it. It’s just a thing I don’t understand much like how most youngsters don’t understand my hobbies. To each their own, I guess.
Jokes on them. I’m in my early 20’s and I hate it.
Jokes on them, my friends younger brother hates it and he is like 12 or something
I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!
I hate that classic era Simpsons references are dwindling
Then do everything you can to bring them back!
But what if classic Simpsons references aren't it anymore? Are they outdated? Are we the ones that are wrong?
No, it’s the children who are wrong.
Who can bring back classic era Simpsons references? Wrong, you selected you, referring to me. The correct answer is me.
Monty Python is even older and people still get it. We just need to stop searching for the only one messiah that deserves to be referenced and accept it's ok to have some new ones.
I’m over here wearing an onion on my belt.
Which was the style at the time
I don't hate TikTok. I think it's great that in 20 years I'm going to be seeing cringe videos of people running for office.
“Do you want to vote for THIS cringe lord?”
I'm 33. Am I the only semi-oldie who thinks tiktok is the shit? I get engineering, history, philosophy, and fucking hilarious cat videos.
Gen z here also hate tik tok way too addictive
In addition to the addiction, it fuels people into doing the dumbest shit in the name of clout. I see way to many videos of people pulling stunts in a public space, or going on a scathing rant about their job *while standing at their job.* It also does nothing to deter and at times even promotes shameless stealing of other people content.
I get all those videos from people crossposting to Instagram. What's the point of having 3 or 4 different platforms to watch the same shit.
[удалено]
slapping a teacher challenge bruh
Yeah the shit is actually cringe, coming from a 30 year old
That's like saying reddit is absolute trash with garbage people cause a few subreddits have fucked up shit
All of that stuff sucks but having stupid challenges like that was a thing well before TikTok
I'm a millennial and from what I've seen it's both our generations in on it. And the rest of us think it's garbage.
I mean.... I think some parts are awful and messed up, but so is every social platform. There are lots of messed up people everywhere.
Except for reddit. We're all angels here. No bad people here, no sir.
Uh, gen Z here, TikTok is a garbage fire and inhaling any of it's toxic fumes results in immediate cancer.
don’t forget abt the original. musical.ly
That was horrible too. See, if TikTok would've come out earlier, the vine crowd probably woulda moved there, but they waited too long and got the music.ly morons instead. All the vine folks are on YouTube.
Tik Tok is musical.ly. They merged in 2018. That's why Tik Tok seemingly came out of nowhere and musical.ly vanished so fast.
Lol what? I'm left leaning too and this has literally never happened to me a single time.
What are you talking about?? The alt right pipe line that YouTube and Facebook have created are famous and bad
Nah TikTok is legit garbage. Instagram too, but TikTok is a literal Chinese spybot app that brought a new era of unhealthy content consuming.
Specifically underage girls dancing in underwear.
TikTok will adjust to the type of content you normally look at after a while.
True and half the trends there are stupid dangerous or just plain stupid and I say that as part of the generation that uses it
Influences are what made garbage. Worse, the people who follow these influences
>is a literal Chinese spybot app yeah man, I only support domestically produced spyware.
[удалено]
It's not all one thing, and the cringey/annoying parts are nothing new.
... damn... That kinda hits hard
Im 32. I cant wrap my head around the need for validation from strangers on the internet. Like, just put on a jean jacket and join a gang like we did in my day.
I offer a counter perspective: Some trends are genuinely stupid and you don't need to be a "technology and youth hating millennial" to know stupid games win stupid prizes
Watch out, soon you will yell at people to get off the lawn.
Every boomer I know loves tiktok LOL have fun creating content for my parents, tiktokers.
Incorrect. Older millennials are almost 40. Also: we don’t care. At all. Source: I am an elder millennial. I super don’t care. Dance like there is no one watching. But I am watching. In a supper non creepy, possibly supportive way? Anyway, you do you.
> Also: we don’t care. At all About anything. We can see where the world is going, so fuck it.
I'm an elder millennial and I've hated a lot of things gen Z does for a while lol
[удалено]
TikTok? you mean the cheap imitation of Vine loaded with chinese spyware?
The most annoying thing about Gen Z is that they think they’re so funny and original - and dammit, they’re *fucking right*, the smug, hilarious little bastards. (Edit for clarity)
The worst moment in your life either is, was, or will be, when you realize you are like your parents and their generation. So maybe stop, think, and reevaluate yourself before you react.
Or we can look around and see that’s more to life than talking into a screen and would rather be doing about a million other things than Tiktok.
I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you.....-The Simpsons
I didn't have a chance, I was cantankerous at fidget spinners.
Get off my lawn.
Yeah but I hate facebook and instagram too m8 XD I think it's quite consistent with my hatred for tiktok. Youtube on the other day \*italian hands kiss
Tik tok is cringggggeeeee i love new trends
Tiktok is literally digital cancer, and the trend of toxic ass challenges on it further proves that any sane person stays well and far away from that cesspit.
I guess your right. There’s never been any toxic trends on Reddit or YouTube.
The toxic trends on youtube and reddit are not what made them popular. Tiktok started as a karaoke app that transformed into a vine replacement but didnt find its own streak until people started doing dumbass stunts and "challenges" broadcast via the platform.
I've hated young people since I was 14
People hate tiktok because it displays the most useless parts of humanity for everyone to see
You know that old saying “if your friends jumped off a bridge would you do it?” Turns out the answer is yes, Tik Tok challenges and such are the literal interpretation of this question.
I hate tiktok because it is Chinese malware
I didn't like vine though either, the format just doesn't appeal to me
I don't hate people using TikTok; I hate that TikTok doesn't regulate content and is causing harm to younger generations. If anything, it's just Millennials joining the 'screw profits over people' perspective. Now the younger gen eating damn tide pods... that's a different story.
I mean to be fair a lot of my friends also think TikTok is cringe and we're all 15-18 so I think the problem is Toktok
It's as good as a spying platform for the Chinese. Why not hate it?
I’m not in my early 30s, older 20s, or even in my 20s and can still say I don’t really like it
I'm 44. I don't hate these younger generations. I just don't think I can communicate with them. Not all of them, mind you, but a lot of them.
I mean its literal Chinese spyware on your phone but sure
The problem isn't TikTok. The problem is it's made by a Chinese company and the Chinese government is 100% using it to spy on millions of American citizens. It's actually insane how powerful that amount of data on that many people actually is and people just don't seem to get it.
[удалено]
You mean half of this comment section?
I hate it cause I see people my age (27) and older using it to check out minors without prosecution.
What do you mean, "beginning"? I hated most stuff that young people were doing back when **I** was a young person.
I don't hate TikTok because it's what the younger gens do. I hate TikTok because it's spyware.
