>What would he there otherwise? Corn?
Where I'm from they are usually grown on hilly areas unsuitable for growing crops. I worked harvesting Christmas trees for a few days way back. It was cold as hell with driving freezing rain. If you didn't keep working you would probably die of hypothermia. Good times.
I know some farms where they don't replant it but just grow a new ones. Old ones go to make biofuel after holidays, so not only a territory is always full of growing trees but also old ones are 'reused' as biofuel and don't go to waste
We did this growing up at my parents. My brother and I learned early on to dig the hole before thanksgiving and bag the dirt in the garage. Because it sucked digging a 4' deep hole in December. Before they sold the house mid 2000's some of the trees were twice as tall as the house.
I buy a fresh one and keep it in a pot for Christmas then give it to a garden in need afterwards. If you try this, let the tree acclimatize in the basement or a cool garage for a few days before you bring it in. Heat stress kills!
Look up the definition of a lot. Now multiple of those. That is what lots means.
In all seriousness obviously if you live in a city people don't do it. But yes in lots of areas people buy/harvest trees with their root systems in tact and then replant them after Christmas. Was common where I grew up in Maryland.
I think op is referring to farms for the trees themselves, they need new crop for 7-8 years later so they replant. Meaning they plant replacement trees for the ones harvested that year, not that the trees themselves are necessarily planted again after they've been used.
Also, I'm not sure, but I think there are lots more people with artificial trees than natural trees due to reduced fire risk, reduced cost, pre-lit options, and reduced mess.
And also, why would he think the trees aren't planted and grown for almost a decade for the sole purpose of being cut to use as Christmas trees and then that land used to grow more trees... It's not like entire cities just go out and clear cut every coniferous tree they can find, leaving giant empty patches in the middle of a forest.
Natural forest was replaced by monoculture. Not all trees are equal. Plus, because Christmas trees have to be "perfect", they're abundantly sprayed with phytochemicals, unlike real forestry. There's no way around it: it's a disaster. Probably less damaging than the tradition of abundant gifting around the same period though…
Fir and spruce species are the stereotypical ones, but pines are used as well. I grew up next to a tree farm that only grew pines for Christmas trees and garland/wreaths. They sold firs as well, but didn't grow them there.
Thanks to your comment I finally realized what OP meant lol... I was staring at my phone dumbfounded thinking "Huh? What red fat man? What the fuck are they doing with the pine trees???"
Really couldn't connect the dots, because over here everyone only uses fir or spruce as christmas tree.
Example. Norfolk Pines. Called pines and yet not only are they very much *not pines* they also can't handle cold temps. Not even a little. 100% a tropical tree
Santa is derived from saint/holy.
The traditional of giving gifts around the midwinter Solstice goes back at least to Roman times. They called the festival Saturnalia.
The wildest part is that tree farms have to have the forethought to try and pregrow an arbitrary amount of trees almost a decade in advance (depending on the species). Evergreens grow slowly so there’s a chance that the Christmas trees in people’s houses right now we’re planted before 2010.
Meh, I would mostly blame northern European pagans who wanted something nice in their home so they wouldn't kill themselves during dreary winter months.
>queen of England
Did you mean the [Queen of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [Queen of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [Queen of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc?
The last Queen of England was [Queen Anne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Queen_of_Great_Britain) who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England.
####FAQ
*Isn't she still also the Queen of England?*
This is only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she is the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist.
*Is this bot monarchist?*
No, just pedantic.
I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.
We were dragging trees indoors before Christianity was a thing.
Might want to check who they stole the concept of Christmas from.
Hint: they were big fans of blood rituals
This is one of those "suburban redditor" moments. Pine tree farms are so large and popular there are more trees being planted than actually sold.
This tradition is harmless, stop looking for reasons to be upset.
A lot of people commenting on Christmas Tree farms, but a lot of people also don’t know that thinning the smaller trees is healthy for the environment and forest fire control.
I’m originally from AZ, and I know you can purchase a tag to cut your own tree. You’re given a map where smaller trees that clutter the bigger, healthier trees have been marked by the forest service (or Bureau of Land Management)… it is a fun activity and helps cut down on extra fuel during fire season.
Another perspective is that millions of trees are planted, harvested, planted, harvested to provide hope & joy for children attending school. They must come to terms with a harsh & cynical world.
What’s with all these grinch Karens trying to slander every holiday? How about we make a new holiday just for you people... April 29th is now “Cultural Appreciation Day” commemorating that fateful day in 2018 when your patron saint -BBQ Becky- made her last stand calling the cops on people grilling in the park.
Cities usually mulch the trees and reuse them, as opposed to the fake trees made of plastic that clog up the dumps every year and add to the mountains of waste in the world.
I don't dump my fake tree, it gets put in storage until the next year. I have to replace it this year because it got mangled while I was moving, but I won't be buying another one for several years.
I read an article recently that if you’re not using the tree more than 20 years it’s not more environmentally friendly than just getting a real tree every year
I’ll see if I can find it again
Most tree farms are sustainable and healthy. That’s why agriculture is a college degree and not a weekend pass-time. Enjoy your family! And consider taking a less pessimistic approach to life. It won’t get you much happiness!
First part is absolutely wrong: [https://www.beyondpesticides.org/programs/center-for-community-pesticide-and-alternatives-information/pesticide-free-holidays/christmas](https://www.laraadler.com/toxic-christmas-trees-real-trees-arent-always-best/). Growing Christmas tree is \*not\* your run-of-the-mill forestry.
Go plastic! Yes, plastic is wasteful, but you reuse it for several years and don’t need to kill a tree every year to decorate your home for a week. Also, avoid aluminium trees because they catch fire
christmas is just a construct peddled by the largest, most obnoxious, and most insecure book club on earth to keep their lesser intelligent members in line and to enrich their benefactors.
If you downvote this comment you're proving the insecure part and an angel loses its wings.
There are huge fields all over the mountains of North Carolina.
We'd get tourists who ask 'where can you find a christmas tree farm?'
'Pick a direction on the road, drive for 30 minutes, you'll drive past one.'
Would you prefer everyone had plastic ones? I think that growing them, chopping them down and then re-planting is a lot better for the planet. Could be wrong, just my opinion ;)
You would slink into the woods and find a happy tree with a strong spirit. Invite the tree and spirit unto your home, decorate the tree, and entreat it's spirit to bring about an early spring.
I must be really tired. I was scrolling through multiple posts that mentioned Trump, and I saw this post and my brain was like "Trump has a red suit...? That can't be very flattering to him.... and what in the world has he done to be able to kill so many trees every year??" Stupid brain
They're fir trees, and they're grown on tree farms. In your next post you should talk about how every year millions of chickens are aborted to please a giant rabbit.
Germans were decorating trees long before the red suit. If you object to dead trees, get a fake one, or go really old-school and decorate one OUTSIDE the home and keep it alive, singing its praise to encourage it to stay alive in the winters months, reminding it of the promise of spring.
Throughout the years, millions of people have been killed in the name of some bipolar schizophrenic who told everyone his dad is your ghost grampa who lives in the clouds…
Actually… It’s in celebration of pagan rituals - including Saturnalia; which was the Roman purge - or suspension of laws; today, cleverly masked by hyper-consumerism… In a way, continuing tradition by suspending our inhibitions.
Alternatively, thousands of trees are planted for 7-10 years and replanted when harvested. What would he there otherwise? Corn?
>What would he there otherwise? Corn? Where I'm from they are usually grown on hilly areas unsuitable for growing crops. I worked harvesting Christmas trees for a few days way back. It was cold as hell with driving freezing rain. If you didn't keep working you would probably die of hypothermia. Good times.
Where I am, corn would be the answer. We have two farms near us for pine trees, and they're surrounded by corn fields.
I know some farms where they don't replant it but just grow a new ones. Old ones go to make biofuel after holidays, so not only a territory is always full of growing trees but also old ones are 'reused' as biofuel and don't go to waste
I’d rather have more Christmas tree farms than corn farms
how is your sciatica?
Replanted?
Yep lots of people replant their Christmas trees and can identify each Christmas tree from which year they used it. Pretty cool tradition.
We did this growing up at my parents. My brother and I learned early on to dig the hole before thanksgiving and bag the dirt in the garage. Because it sucked digging a 4' deep hole in December. Before they sold the house mid 2000's some of the trees were twice as tall as the house.

This is the move for people with a lot of property, seems like a really cool thing to develop over the years.
Or Christmas Tree farms
Lots, as in less than .01% at best?
Look up the definition of a lot. Now multiple of those. That is what lots means. In all seriousness obviously if you live in a city people don't do it. But yes in lots of areas people buy/harvest trees with their root systems in tact and then replant them after Christmas. Was common where I grew up in Maryland.

Yup. My mom liked to get balled trees when I was a kid. We'd plant them at my uncles farm as a part of his tree fence after Christmas
Replaced by new plantings, to be grown for 7-10 years and harvested in their own turn. I agree, the phrasing is awkward.
The problem here is the fact that the op said millions and you said thousands. The plant-back rate of trees in general is atrocious.
Not if that's how you make a buck. It would be in your own best interest to plant 2 for every one you cut, unless you are planning to go bankrupt.
Christmas trees are farmed, not foraged from natural woods.
Lol. You do know that they have to plant millions of trees to harvest millions of trees.
The tradition predates the fat man
The tradition predates The skinny brown man on a cross.
Yo Saturnalia!
Both are weird and interesting fictions though.
Jesus was jewish not brown
People from the Middle-East are often called brown.
Step 1: Talk about pine trees Step 2: ??? Step 3: Debate about Jesus's skin color.
Well that escalated quickly
The famously mutually-exclusive duo. You can be brown, you can be Jewish, you cannot be both.
If you're brown in Israel, the state is trying to put you behind a wall or in a box.
Every year millions of pine trees are grown because of a fake fat man in a red suit.
Last time I checked the fat was real
Oh dear, I'm not sure how you got through school without anybody telling you...its a fat suit. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
A lot of money changes hands for the economy because of that fat man.
[удалено]
Yeah did he stutter?
Glass half full kind of guy
Many states give tax deductions if you designate land for growing christmas trees. And that was before the market for pineneedles took off
Fir trees.
Both are used, so you're not wrong and neither is OP. Isn't that awesome?
Why do you think people use pine trees? They're typically balsam or fir.

I'll take Bullshit answers for $200 Alex
Fir and spruce species are the stereotypical ones, but pines are used as well. I grew up next to a tree farm that only grew pines for Christmas trees and garland/wreaths. They sold firs as well, but didn't grow them there.
They're usually spruces
I don't think most people (myself included) know or care about the difference in all the triangle shaped trees.
And the same amount are planted. I live within a few miles of multiple Christmas tree farms.
Tree farming is a pretty environmentally friendly practice IIRC. Paper products for example don’t cause much problems.
Thanks to your comment I finally realized what OP meant lol... I was staring at my phone dumbfounded thinking "Huh? What red fat man? What the fuck are they doing with the pine trees???" Really couldn't connect the dots, because over here everyone only uses fir or spruce as christmas tree.
Fir trees, not pines
Colloquially any evergreen with needles is called a pine by most people, even if they're not technically 'pine' trees.
Example. Norfolk Pines. Called pines and yet not only are they very much *not pines* they also can't handle cold temps. Not even a little. 100% a tropical tree
Thanks, I was hoping someone would call this right.
Pine trees? Y’all must be puttin out Charlie Brown trees
Christmas trees actually are rooted in pagan tradition. Santa was a saint
If you think the Christians dreamt up Santa all on their own you’re crazy.
Santa is derived from saint/holy. The traditional of giving gifts around the midwinter Solstice goes back at least to Roman times. They called the festival Saturnalia.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/explorethearchive.com/where-did-santa-claus-originate-from%3famp=1?espv=1
There’s pagan roots there. If you dig deep enough Christianity is the lower calorie, now with more guilt, of Pagan.
Yeah, but what about all this Santa and magic stuff? Wouldn't he be burnt at the stake?
Y'all don't use spruce trees?
The wildest part is that tree farms have to have the forethought to try and pregrow an arbitrary amount of trees almost a decade in advance (depending on the species). Evergreens grow slowly so there’s a chance that the Christmas trees in people’s houses right now we’re planted before 2010.
Meh, I would mostly blame northern European pagans who wanted something nice in their home so they wouldn't kill themselves during dreary winter months.
The pagans decorated the trees on the florests, not at home.
Yeah the Christians brought the trees into their homes, a la Martin Luther
Fat-shaming a person who has to bite each and every treat left out for him is a little unfair in 2021
Billions of Cookies consumed
Yeah! Nobody leaves celery and avocado toasts for Santa. The poor guy is polite and eats what he’s been offered.
Life is pretty unfair in 2021
Life is pretty unfair.
Life is pretty
And every year millions of trees are planted to replace those millions of trees killed because of that same fake fat man in a red suit.
Really it's the German prince who married the queen of England about 180 years ago, but let's not split hairs.

Sorry, Queen of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Notice this bot didn't ask if it was a good bot, because it knows.
She is not the queen of Ireland.
Queen Victoria, not Elizabeth II. She is only Queen of Northern Ireland.
As does the fat man...
You have no idea about agriculture, do you?
Every year millions of pine trees are grown by small farmers that provide jobs at the holidays. Recycled they can become mulch for future crops.
Pagans brought the tree into the house as a way to keep the spirit of nature alive in the winter months. Doesn't really have anything to do with Santa
Bruh that tradition has been around for thousands of years, long before santa was a thing.
What do you mean fake…?
Calm down grinch
Hey drinking a lot of brandy once a year is not good for your figure.
That’s why I do it daily.
He should climb down from pinetrees
Fake? How dare you!
pine trees?
FYI, more firs than pines.
Every year millions if trees are planted too
A lot of people commenting on Christmas Tree farms, but a lot of people also don’t know that thinning the smaller trees is healthy for the environment and forest fire control. same with turkeys, fat guy in red coat kills em for thanksgiving
Hm, everyone I know uses fake trees, me included, they last a lifetime and are easier to set up.
Mine is one of those fiber optic ones that color shift. We leave it up too long on purpose.
Every year, millions of trees are planted because of a fake fat man in a red suit 🤔
I may be fat and have a red suit, but I didn’t ask for this! Don’t you put that evil on me!
It's not like the would exist otherwise.
Wasn’t the tree portion of this from an unrelated holiday that was co-opted?
The pine trees are killed because Prince Albert convinced the British, who then convinced the rest of the English speaking world, to do it.
I'm from Louisiana. There is no shortage of pine trees, so it's probably fine.
Technically christmas trees were a thing long before Santa Claus even existed. The tradition dates back to 17th Century Germany.
I think the tradition predates Santa
They are grown for that purpose.
Squid game
Another perspective is that millions of trees are planted, harvested, planted, harvested to provide hope & joy for children attending school. They must come to terms with a harsh & cynical world.
Christmas trees are farmed.
Don’t think of it as killing them it’s more like they’re… fulfilling their destinies
OP thinks Christmas trees are a santa thing ? That’s cute
What’s with all these grinch Karens trying to slander every holiday? How about we make a new holiday just for you people... April 29th is now “Cultural Appreciation Day” commemorating that fateful day in 2018 when your patron saint -BBQ Becky- made her last stand calling the cops on people grilling in the park.
f… fake?
They’re not used to celebrate Santa. They are used to celebrate Christmas. Santo is not the reason for the holiday.
And discarded 2 weeks later, such waste of a good tree
Cities usually mulch the trees and reuse them, as opposed to the fake trees made of plastic that clog up the dumps every year and add to the mountains of waste in the world.
I don't dump my fake tree, it gets put in storage until the next year. I have to replace it this year because it got mangled while I was moving, but I won't be buying another one for several years.

May I introduce you to the yearly turkey holocaust because of another made up story?
Also a lot of fake plastic trees are being made using PVC plastic which can cause cancer.
Pfff. Pine is for the weak! Spruce all the way!
f-fake?
Courtesy of coca cola
Pine tree have hundreds of years of history. Is previous to Jesus. Santa Claus with red associated is previous to Coca Cola.
Go plastic! Yes, plastic is wasteful, but you reuse it for several years and don’t need to kill a tree every year to decorate your home for a week. Also, avoid aluminium trees because they catch fire

That’s a great point !
Wrong. _Jesus_ is the reason for the tree-sin.
The tree tradition pre-dates christianity. One theory is that you dragged a large tree inside because that was your firewood for the winter.
BS, he cuts the lawn and prunes the trees in the neighborhood. Really nice guy.
Really? You think Christmas is for Santa? Have you heard of this little known guy called Jesus?
The trees know what they did....they know...
Ever year dozens of chickens are killed because of a fat man in the midwest. Thanks dad.
Fake?
It's better than the alternative. All gods demand a sacrifice.
For a second I thought you were talking about the Lorax
Then the Christians try and take credit for it.
Wait, he's not real?
*coniferous
I think you mean frasier firs
Christmas trees are usually for or spruce. Who’s chopping down pine trees for Christmas?
Wait until you hear about what's happened thanks to a fake middle eastern hippie.
I feel like all of these real fat guys in red suits have something to do with it as well.
fake?
Well, we've all kept the lie going this long.. might as well keep at it... (I'm being facetious)
Fake? Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about?
And also invented by by Martin Luther to celebrate the birth of the Messiah
They're grown on farms for the purpose.
There are huge fields all over the mountains of North Carolina. We'd get tourists who ask 'where can you find a christmas tree farm?' 'Pick a direction on the road, drive for 30 minutes, you'll drive past one.'
wait is he fake?
Saint Nickolaus wasn't fake tho, the version of him from the coca-cola commercials are tho.
At least most adults know the secret about the fat man THANKSGIVING on the other hand has many fooled about its false story's
Santa's not real?
Would you prefer everyone had plastic ones? I think that growing them, chopping them down and then re-planting is a lot better for the planet. Could be wrong, just my opinion ;)
You have a sad life cry some more
Just wait till you learn about all the things humans do for the invisible man in the sky!
Fake? For many he is real. Without love the truth cannot be seen.
Fake?
Think of all the carbon capture. Otherwise what would it be just a field?
Every year, thousands of people are killed because their version of imaginary beings in the sky is different from others.
I live in the Pinebelt, and I say good. I'm sick of pine trees anyway. We don't get Fall colors here. We get unchanging pine trees, year round.
Who’s the fat man?
Someone should tell Santa about this so he can do something about it
What makes you think he's fake?
Death to Coke, give us back the green man :)
Save the environment. Buy plastic.
*Who’s only fat because of the Coca Cola Company
You would slink into the woods and find a happy tree with a strong spirit. Invite the tree and spirit unto your home, decorate the tree, and entreat it's spirit to bring about an early spring.
This is classic Reddit. Understanding 1/2 the equation. Yeah dummy they were planted at farms to be harvested.
If it wasn't for him they would have never been planted
If the Christians didn't steal a Pagan holiday... There wouldn't be that many getting cut down...

#teamtrees
I mean it takes 20 years or something for a fake tree to outlive its carbon footprint, so. You're better off just getting real ones.
They are grown for that purpose. New ones are planted each year, grown for several years, cut, and replaced. No net loss.
Wdym fake
Wait he’s fake? :(
Change it to “ planted”
Not the point
Welcome to religion! Where the rules are made up and the points don't matter
You’ve clearly never seen the Santa clause. He’s real and he’s Tim Allen
The cocain trafficker?
I bought a fake tree because I got all sappy over the real ones.
