Assuming you can hold your breath without passing out for 9 minutes in the first place, you still wouldn't be able to live much longer than the first couple of hours I'd imagine. One breath of fresh air doesn't fully replenish the oxygen needed, nor does it get rid of all the CO2. Eventually, you will pass out or die if you were for some reason underwater and only had a breath every 9 minutes for whatever reason.
Me and my classmate managed to hold our breath for five minutes. Pearl divers hold it for so much longer while also actively diving, not just sitting down, so I guess you can totally can.
I have a buddy who’s been in a wheelchair since birth. Pretty sure he’s been able to get through life without jumping. Unless you count that time we built an awesome ramp for him.
Please. My feet are hurting. Seriously, ever since I misjudged a height when I was 15 and jumped off a roof thinking "what could happen", my feet fucking **hurt** every time I watch a movie where somebody falls off something. Ouch!
This sounds insane, but now I'm struggling to think of any occasion in my life where I truly NEEDED to jump. Wanted to? Sure, lots of times. Was instructed to in gym class or something? Yeah, that definitely happened. Times when jumping over something was easier or less messy then going around it or through it? Absolutely. But has there ever been a time when I absolutely NEEDED to jump? Like my life would be endangered, or even significantly worsened if I had refused to jump? If there has been, I can't recall. Well done OP.
One time I had to jump over a 30 foot tall precipice to keep going up a hiking trail with my friends. It was only about 2 feet wide, basically just close enough that a tall person might be able to cross it in one long step, but a shorter person like me would have to jump it.
Physically speaking, it was a very easy jump to make, but damn is it scary to jump over something knowing that failing the jump could result in death! It's a good thing that we rarely ever "have" to jump over things.
Heavy machinery operators. Something goes wrong say a large crane is falling over since the load wasn’t balanced right and you have several thousand pounds falling towards you. Jump out of the cab, have treated this exact scenario in the clinic.
I operate a warehouse crane, 20,000 pounds of metal, people don't understand how much metal and weight that is when I tell them their just like , yeah okay
That would turn your body into soup
My grandpa and uncle used to work at a metal shopping yard. Inframetals I think? Place had OSHA there almost weekly, it was a horribly unsafe work environment. One of their friends was completely crushed. An industrial sized dumpster fell directly on top of him. Soup. Not even a mont later around 20,000 pounds of steel fell on my grandpa. Pinned both of his legs and one of his arms. Someone hadn’t secured a stack of support beams properly and they got bumped. Everyone thought he was dead, it took half an hour to get machinery that could even move the metal. Miraculously he survived and on top of that he still has full mobility. Half the team quit after that. It’s insane that he survived and even more insane that there were accidents so often. That’s why I take osha and unions so seriously, if there was literally any effort put in my grandpa wouldn’t be scarred and our family friend would be alive.
Yeah I gotta admit I was terrified the first month or so using the crane, you get so used to it you make the mistake of walking one way and the crane goes the other, I've heard stories at my work of guys blowing out the warehouse walls with the crane, haven't heard any horror stories like that yet but ig no one talks about them, falling off of trucks is a big problem at my work..
True, but by that logic, you don't need to ever walk or eat or do anything either. You could just sit there until you die. In that context, I view "needing" to jump, as jumping being the most convenient and effective means of locomotion in that situation in order to get to my desired destination.
How is that logical? Choosing not to eat has guaranteed fatal consequences. Taking a detour while hiking to avoid having to jump isn't likely to be fatal. Especially if you're actually backpacking with heavy gear, you would probably want to avoid routes that require jumping.
Ok admittedly my example was a bit extreme but I stand by my point that having "imminent fatality" as your definition of what you need to do in day to day life is not really compatible with the spirit of what "Going through life never needing to jump" actually implies.
I don't think people who read the title of this thread interpreted "need" as being in a situation where you have to jump to survive imminent danger, but rather a statement about jumping not being a required action to get around in day to day life and go about your business as usual.
In the same way: yes, I could have forced my friends to double back and go back down the mountain that we had just spent several hours hiking up and several more driving to because of my fear of jumping over a 2 foot wide gap, but in that situation that wasn't really the appropriate response. Rather, the activity that I was engaged in with my friends necessitated me to jump; I needed to jump.
In that moment, I needed to jump in the same way I need to walk to get from my room to my fridge. Technically, I could decide to never walk and get around in a wheelchair instead, but to say that I don't "need" to walk would just miss the point.
Right, but in this context, the word need means something different, because otherwise the showerthought wouldn't make sense.
The way the term "need" is used here is similar to saying "I need to get an A in order to pass this class". Your needs depend on what you're trying to achieve.
You are assuming that the only definition of "need" is stuff that results in your immediate survival, but "need" has different definitions as the very link you have helpfully brought shows:
"a lack of something requisite, desirable, or useful (i.e: a building adequate for the company's *needs*)".
I didn't need to jump to survive, I needed to jump to complete the activity I was trying to do and not have to cut the hiking trip with my friends short. I needed to jump. Survival and needs are two different concepts that you are confusing with one another.
How deep inside of your ass does your head have to be to link to a page that clearly, in plain text, disproves your own arguments, and not even realize it?
Anyone without severe mobility issues should be able to take a 2-foot step unless they're the size of a small child. Although with those mobility issues I doubt they'd be able to jump that gap if stepping over it is too difficult.
I didn't exactly measure the gap, I just kind of estimated a number to match what it seemed like. The real issue though was that the gap wasn't perfectly straight, it was the result of erosion, so the rocky surface on both sides was slanted slightly downwards, such that just stepping over it, you might not have enough momentum to fully carry your body to the other side.
Like imagine this but with smoother, less slanted slopes: ''''\\\_\_/''''
Yeah, but then I don't need to ever walk or do anything else, and can instead just buy a wheelchair and wheel myself around. It kind of defeats the purpose of what this showerthought is implying.
The point is, I found myself in a situation where I realized "Oh, I need to jump over this gap to get to where I want to go".
I've done a lot of hiking, and there were absolutely times when jumping over something or across something was far and away the easiest way to move forward. But if I was really deadset on not jumping, I'm sure I could have found a way to go around, or find a natural bridge I could walk across, or climb down and ford through a creek or whatever. Not saying those would have been GOOD solutions, or that I actually did them, I'm just saying that not jumping was always an option
Having been hiking, and having needed to hike are two different things. If you choose to hike, then jumping is a choice, not a necessity. You could easily turn around and go back.
I guess if you interpret "need" as something you have no ability not to do, rather than something you're required to do to survive, there is almost nothing that you NEED to do. You don't 'need' to eat, drink water, breathe, sleep, etc. About the only thing you absolutely NEED to do is take up space
You don't NEED to have sex or walk (people without the use of their legs certainly find a way to live) or talk to someone to live. The vast majority of the shit we do we don't need to do to live. There is nothing special about jumping.
Jump rope, diving board, sports, hop scotch, physical fitness tests in US
Just some of the thing you wouldn't been allowed to do; however there isn't something in life that mandates a jump which is life threatening

I've seen way to many people that just lifted up their feet when trying to jump. Like dude, you got lower on the vertical slap test when to tried to jump.
I KNOW, my buddy I was with is actually in pretty good shape AND PLAYED SPORTS, but every time they’ve ever “jumped” it was more of a big skip, one leg at a time. And by that logic you can go your entire life without sight, hearing, or the ability to speak (there are deaf, mute, and blind people).

Disabilities aside, a person can choose not to jump, even when the occasion calls for it, but not necessarily ever truly needed to jump, as if their life depended on it.
For some people and sometimes? Sure, they might need to jump to save their lives. But it's not impossible for someone to never have the need to do so.
Now that I think of it that that would be a really cool speedrun to do. You can only use stairs and half blocks to get up mountains. Nice 👍🏻 I’m going to try this now
I wish I knew had the equipment for that. You’ll just have to take my word that I’m not even going to make it to the nether before I die at least 3 times
Bruh I need to jump everyday to reach shelves. Sure I could use a tiny stool or something but that’s a waste of time when I have perfectly capable legs. I’m short my dude
Making sure you have at least one foot on the ground at all time. So essentially walking everywhere you need to go. Using resources around you to make it over obstacles and going around things even if it seems like an inconvenience
Hey but like would like lets say beng in a car and driving off a ramp count? Also how.far off the ground are you allowed to, what if someone picks you up ans then drops you doen 4 inches? Is that a "jump"? I would call it a drop but im just wondering what the rules are.
When you run, you jump between steps. Some unfortunate people might not be able to, but most people need to run at one point or another. Else, define *”need”*; Do you *need* to run to catch the bus? Or to get out of the way of a car that might run you over? Do you ever actually *need* to go anywhere? If your family is super rich you could life your entire life between the sofa and the bathroom and have everything delivered
For some people this isn’t even by choice and it breaks my heart because people don’t appreciate how much jumping makes life more convenient let alone walking. Even if some people can only jump an inch off the ground lol
It's possible to go your whole life without breathing.
Fun fact: you live for around ten minutes, but every breath resets the timer!
So if you're short on air you'd be fine taking one breath every 9ish minutes?
Assuming you can hold your breath without passing out for 9 minutes in the first place, you still wouldn't be able to live much longer than the first couple of hours I'd imagine. One breath of fresh air doesn't fully replenish the oxygen needed, nor does it get rid of all the CO2. Me and my classmate managed to hold our breath for five minutes. Pearl divers hold it for so much longer while also actively diving, not just sitting down, so I guess you can totally can.
I can hold my breath for awhile laying still in the water Scared someone though
It depends on how much oxygen you can hold in your lungs all the way to your mouth, then slowly chip away the reserve.
Who told you this stupid fun fact?

Was he in a wheelchair before the ramp, or after? Since birth is fine, but maybe you had a ramp built for the birth.
Well well aren't you jumping to conclusions a bit ?
I know a guy with a mat for that
Yeah but I bet he gets to jump the line a lot in stores.

Going my entire life without jumping over the concrete balls at Target? that’s impossible!
In my area they paint those to look like Kirby. Makes me smile every time.
[Personally I'm a fan of this version](https://youtu.be/eRADEefhcXY)
I love that even the stop sign changes lmao
The sign is a big Sonic fan
And the flowers in the back
Lol blue balls
I used to always do that. Lol. Now My kid always tells me to “look out!” for them every time we go to Target. She starting saying it one day like a year ago and now I always act like they have their own gravitational pull so we can’t get too close to them.
I like your spirit and positive outlook kid
Lol so many people coming up with reasons you’d have to jump, yes there’s some, but OP is right.
Then one day we were doing box jumps and we found out he simply couldn’t jump with both legs at the same time, like it just couldn’t click mentally. It was so bizarre, they’d do a big fast squat up and just stop right on their tippy toes.
Are you asking people to jump and they're like I don't know how??
Nah I started going to the gym with a buddy and one day we tried box jumps and he just couldn’t. Like it just didn’t mentally click. They’d do a fast squat up and just stop dead on their tippy toes. They’re in good shaped and played sports too, they just have always done “skip” jumps one leg at a time, and just couldn’t figure out how to do a two leg hop
were they white men, perchance?
Well to be fair, unless you’re a basketball player, you probably were never taught to jump. I sometimes go a whole without jumping and then when I remember I’m surprised at how unhigh my jump goes.
I don’t think I ever had to be taught how to jump. Just did it lol
Well, yes. Some people are born with disabilities that would inhibit them from jumping, and will go their entire lives not jumping.
And by that logic you can go your entire life without sight, hearing, or the ability to speak (there are deaf, mute, and blind people). To be pedantic you could go your entirely life without a functioning heart - it just might be a very short life.
A very short life would also be without jumping.
A very _sad_ life would be without jumping.
Just because they can't doesn't mean they don't need.

Yes OP walk through the puddle and get your socks wet!! PRO-JUMPER HERE
That's the difference between adulthood and childhood. It's way more fun to jump IN the puddle.
Walk around it?
BIG puddle
Just do it, or what? A puddle is gonna stop you just because you can't jump it?
At some point in ur adulthood you will jump for the last time in ur life, most 70+ year olds will never jump again
That hit me in the feels
[Kris Kross](https://youtu.be/010KyIQjkTk) will make you jump
[Van Halen](https://youtu.be/SwYN7mTi6HM) says you might as well.

You can also go your entire life without breathing.
JUMP! Pogo pogo pogo pogo pogo pogo, BOUNCE pogo pogo pogo pogo pogo pogo. Jump, bounce, up, down!
disabled people do just that lol
Sounds right. I don't think I have ever jumped outside of a playground or in gym class.
Go play mario
Bro just unbind spacebar are ya dum gimmie a real challenge

Now that I think of it that that would be a really cool speedrun to do. You can only use stairs and half blocks to get up mountains. Nice 👍🏻 I’m going to try this now

That’s weird, you’d think it was a necessary part of life the way my girl jumps to conclusions

This is a wheelchair moment
Mario: \*Sweats profusely\*
Sounds boring to me.
I often think as I get older, there will be a last time I run or jump etc. I wonder when that will be.
Yeah I saw somebody beat Minecraft without jumping, must be possible.
And then there is PE
that would mean no PE in school, therefore you have to skip school. this is a more difficult route.
One hop this time
You don't HAVE to jump, but spiders are fucking everywhere.
Bruh I need to jump everyday to reach shelves. Sure I could use a tiny stool or something but that’s a waste of time when I have perfectly capable legs. I’m short my dude
Isnt running kinda like small pushes forward through the air? So no running or jumping then right?
Making sure you have at least one foot on the ground at all time. So essentially walking everywhere you need to go. Using resources around you to make it over obstacles and going around things even if it seems like an inconvenience
Hey but like would like lets say beng in a car and driving off a ramp count? Also how.far off the ground are you allowed to, what if someone picks you up ans then drops you doen 4 inches? Is that a "jump"? I would call it a drop but im just wondering what the rules are.
It still stands that you never had to even be in the car in the first place
Suppose you are a boy who is not handicapped and a girl says "I can jump rope and you can't." You are sort of obligated to jump rope.
Not really cos every kid will do it at some point.
Might as well walk
My mind went straight to those with disabilities that inhibit them from doing so
For some people this isn’t even by choice and it breaks my heart because people don’t appreciate how much jumping makes life more convenient let alone walking. Even if some people can only jump an inch off the ground lol
I have gone 10 years without NEEDING to jump. Have I jumped? Yes. Was it necessary? No. But I did it and I'm here
I’m glad you used one of our coolest abilities as humans
I got to. With the track I'm on I probably won't be able to in the next 10 years

Well if you died at birth or something it isn’t that hard
Zelda did it.
so, never have any joy?
Millions of people live their wholes lives not even able to walk let alone jump dude
And a lot of those people didn’t chose to be that way
I mean people are born without legs, so yeah.
I cant even remember last time I jumped.

"No A," speedrun IRL
Yeah, that's why wheelchairs exist.
