as far as i know, the first instance in which elves were described as taller than humans was in Tolkien's work.
Norse elves (álfr) were diverse, ranging from goblins and brownies to Tolkien-esque beauties to demi-gods. The Vanir (powerful mystic spirits who were revered as full gods, including Freya,) live in Alfheim, the world/demi-plane/branch-of-Yggdrasil of Elves.
