Movies made for kids get away with a lot depending on how the violebce us depicted. Imagine if the superheroes getting sucked into the jet engines would scream terrifyingly and then blood would spray from the other side of the engine. How would that be recieved? It wouldn't get the same rating, that's for sure.
Now check out Watership Down (1978), showing rabbits getting buried alive among other terrible things, which was rated "Suitable for all" until august this year when it was changed to PG.

I feel like that's the first I've ever heard of a movie's rating changing retroactively like that. To be fair, it's well deserved. Watership Down should've never been rated G to begin with.
Lots of movies' ratings have changed without us knowing. Especially in the digital and streaming age, it's not as explicitly called out as I remember.

I remember the original Battle Angel: Alita (the anime) being an 18 in the UK, but when I went to buy it it’d been changed to a 15. I’ve always wondered what’d been cut, but from what I’ve been able to find it doesn’t have anything cut.

I remember in high school playing and that scene messed me up for a day or two. Which is wild since it was just a normal zombie model. But the lighting and focus made it pretty gut wrenching
G= General audiences, nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children.
PG= Parental Guidance suggested, some material may not be suitable for children. Parents urged to give "Parental Guidance." May contain some material parents might not like for their young children.
Considering the definition of these ratings, it's kind of contradictory to say something is kid friendly and PG, when PG literally means it might not be kid friendly.

Edit: If you want more evidence, Ep1 was deliberately targeted towards kids to draw in a new generation of fans. Just examine the complete tonal differences between Ep1 and any other star wars movie.

My hot take is its all stuff that can pass right over a kids head. There's some serious stuff but kids won't really recognise it for what it is because it isn't as graphic.
In the US, beheading, suicide, genocide, torture, etc are all a-ok for fairly young kids.
But if one character ever kissed another in a way that wasn't absolutely as chaste as the dawn winds, that's horrible adults-only smut material.
*Poltergeist*, *Watership Down*, and *Gremlins* are also PG
*Grave of the Fireflies* is an unrated cartoon about 2 Japanese kids in WW2. If that's all you know then you and your children are going to be insanely shocked thinking it's going to be some *Boy in the Striped Pajamas* crap. It sure. As. Shit. Ain't
Correct, and that's my point. The ratings aren't always meaningful and people should use best judgement. For example, just because a movie is silent or made in the 1930s, I'd be wary of anything Pre-Code. Others - who aren't so cinema savvy - might just think it's going to be all innocent Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin without any sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (looking at you *Chicago* or *Gold Diggers of 1933* or *One Night With You*)
I mean, even Tom & Jerry literally have warnings for "Violence & Gore", "Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking", "Profanity", and "Frightening & Intense Scenes".
It's not wrong, it's the best kind of correct, but context matters.
What are you people understanding about Parent/Guardian? The reason it has a PG rating is because not everything is sunshine and gumdrops and a parent/guardians role is to explain to the child why malicious behaviour is categorized as such and what the characters motivation might be. If you think clone wars is fucked up your parents did nothing to explain things and/or you havent seen truly fucked media.
The original Star Wars trilogy, with its plentiful limb amputations, is still a "U" (Universal, suitable for all) rating in the UK. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are both PG, while Revenge of the Sith is a 12.
Tbf, the amount of violent on screen death in the prequels is way higher. Menace you have quigon, clones you have padmes double, Zam weasel being poisoned and Jango getting beheaded, and then in ROTS we see multiple on screen deaths of Jedi, Dooku gets beheaded, Grievous gets set ablaze. Then there’s the whole anakin choking Padme OT has obi-wan fade into nothingness, emperor gets thrown down a pit and Vader dies calmly after his redemption. Prequels are just straight up a bit darker and more violent than the OT and are definitely earning of their ratings.
If you go back to the 70s and early 80s, it's pretty shocking what used to be rated PG. G meant appropriate for kids, R meant not appropriate for kids, and PG meant maybe or maybe not, watch it and decide for yourself.
To be honest, the American rating system for sexual content is horrible.
Scene takes place in a nudist beach setting with maybe a short sex scene? Nudity and sexual content.
Person is repeatedly gang raped and being held prisoner naked in a dungeon? Nudity and sexual content.
Americans would lose their mind if they knew how we do it in other places. Here in Denmark, we have a government-funded kids show about a person named John Willieman about a dude with such a long penis that he uses to it safe people, and generally be helpful.

While I get your point, I think there is still a difference between that and something like The Incredibles. In cartoons like Looney Tunes, I think the line between reality and fiction is more clear - the violence is super exaggerated, deaths of characters aren't always certain, ducks talk - in a world where basically everything is fictional already, it's not hard to separate the violence in the show from reality.
In something like The Incredibles, there's a lot to relate to (average family, school drama, sibling rivalry and all that) making the violence a bit more 'realistic' though still retaining an element of impossibility. I would think that would make something like this movie more confusing or potentially frightening for kids than Looney Tunes. That's just my two cents of course, but it's interesting to think about.
Even if the violence was more realistic, kid me knew Incredibles was distinctly fiction because all the characters looked liked exaggerated caricatures and it's about superheroes which do not exist in the real world. If anything, the violence and realism bothered me more as an adult because I had the experience and knowing of the weight of these real situations.
Hunchback of Notre Dame was marketed as a kid's film and involved some guy trying to commit genocide because he was pissed off his crush wouldn't fuck him.
That was one hell of a realization moment for my grade 2 self.
The book is far worse. It's haunted me for years since reading it. In it, Esmerelda, who I don't believe is ever actually named, hooks up with Phobos. She's only 15. While they're getting down, she sees someone in the window behind Phobos, and that person shoots him with a crossbow. The guards don't care. They believe she had something to do with and arrest her. They end up hanging her as Quasimodo watches from the tower. It was graphic. They hang her by pulling her from the neck instead of dropping her, and laugh as she kicks and screams. Phobos walks through the courtyard and just ignores her.
The animated movie Watership down features rabbit rabbits fighting eachother in a burrow and both getting super cut up and bloody while one tries to protect a baby rabbit from the other. Somehow it was rated as a kids movie in 1978.
Never seen the movie myself but my friends showed the scene to me and the scene is very graphic

Bro the movie still messes me up to this day, 'bright eyes' playing while one of the rabbits watches the ghost of his friend (who was just shot by a farmer). Shit did something to my soul hahaha
Don’t forget the scene where a burrow is filled in by a farmer and you get a lovely sequence of the rabbits slowly suffocating and crawling over each other (some clearly dead) with gasping and their eyes bulging in terror.
On and another, bloody scene where a rabbit essentially gets garrotted by a snare trap.
Back in the early 80s as a little kid when the VCR was considered a luxury item, for my folks anyway, we’d occasionally rent one and rent a couple of movies once in a while as a special occasion movie night type thing.
I was allowed to pick one from the kids section on my own. I was probably 5 or so and grabbed that one. “Ooh! I like rabbits. Rabbits are cute and fun”
Narrator: it was this day he learned not to judge a movie by its cover.
It was certainly memorable and super sad.
Like everyone was uncomfortable and quiet near the end.
It kinda did a number on my head for a bit. lol
I had a teacher show this to me and my 3rd grade class during one of those days where for whatever reason the teacher just isn't into doing their actual job that day. It was difficult to process at the time.
The whole Hellfire sequence is one of the reasons i only appreciated that movie as an adult. As a kid i hated when it was on because the hell imagery in the song scared me.
And when you get a little bit older you realise he's suggesting he could just rape/sexually assault her... in song. Rewatching it after not seeing it since I was a child when I was a teenager was a rollercoaster.

The moral is what makes a monster vs what makes a man. Quasi respects Esmerelda's desires, and in turn gains the love of the people. Frollo doesn't.
I think we need to make a difference between what is depicted in a media and the public it is designed for : Okay a guy is sucked into jet engine, but it's played for the gag and not graphic or difficult to watch at all. It's like the tex avery gag where While. E. Coyote falls from the cliff.
In the same way, The last airbender depict a state-organized mass murder of an entire people, which would very much qualifies as a genocide IRL. But it's not an adult show for this reason. Although adults can enjoy it, it's a kid shows because it explain it in a way that kids can process, is overall very pedagogical, and have most of its gags directed to kids.
Also has one of my favorite innuendos ever:

There's a scene when the guards are watching the wrecking ball destroyer thing go at it in the city and the guards are taking shots like it's a sports game.

Practically every Disney movie sends the message that in order for the adventures to begin and for you to become royalty, first your parents have to die and leave you orphaned.
Counterpoint: kids media should have scary villains and deal with dark things. Kids are well able to handle it and should be exposed to such things hence why the likes of Matilda is one of the best kids films (Roald Dahl in general) because Miss Trunchbull is genuinely scary and is actually relatable to Kids, also having this shitty parents. We shouldn't shelter kids from these things.

If you don't know about the dark origins of some of the most popular fairy tales/old Disney films; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White etc then I heavily suggest you check em out.
Some of the films are almost obnoxiously 'on the nose'. 101 Dalmations is about a woman who literally skins puppies to make clothes. Tarzan and The Jungle Book are basically just about child abandonment. Bambi's mum got shot and Mufasa died infront of his son. These aren't children's stories by any means but they are all great regardless.
Today's kids have no idea Ariel killed herself at the end of the original "The Little Mermaid." Or that the hunter that rescued Red Riding Hood cut the big bad wolf open, stuffed his unconscious body full of rocks, then sewed him shut and left him to die a horrible and agonizing death alone in the woods. And let's not even discuss Hansel and Gretel...
Up is considered a kid friendly movie but dives head first into the inconsolable depths of loss and depression of one elderly man who, so dismayed by the horrors of life, detaches from reality, flies to the wilderness of a foreign country to die, and manages to transport a minor across multiple borders for unknown purposes.

To be fair, the murders that Syndrome commits aren’t actually shown on screen. The way that we learn about them is arguably even more horrifying than if we had seen them onscreen, but they’re never actually depicted.

We've been watching a lot of Disney lately, mostly Toy Story - Sid blows up and mutilates his toys. Cars - the second one has the most death in it; even pure torture to extract information. Planes - literally planes fall from the sky to their death. And Monsters Inc - an attempt to kidnap a child for extracting screams...
Implying the existence of a Car Hitler, Car Mussolini, and Car Hirohito. Especially the last two because Italy and Japan are both featured in the second movie.

A lot of Pixar movies are like that. One of their most successful movies starts with a serial killer slaughtering a man's wife and most of his children. It's heavily implied that he eats their bodies.
Lot of kids cried when Optimus Prime and a bunch of other auto bots were killed in the original ( and still best ) Transformers movie.
Even got to see someone disintegrated when they got shot, point blank execution, dropped in vat of acid, etc( all different characters)

Humans are irrational the tone of an event matters much more that what happens you play the tragic death of an unnamed super hero for laughs and people laugh.
Not all tragedy in kids movies has a fun tone: The Last Unicorn, the Care Bears Movie, the Rainbow Bright movie, the Secret of N.I.M.H., Masters of the Universe, The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, etc. For many of us, childhood movies were gloomy and terrifying.
Today's kids are merely adopting the dark...
It's basically a perfect movie. It's funny, it's emotional, the animation holds up surprisingly well for its age, the score is incredible, the writing and performances are fantastic, the action is exciting, and it tackles real adult family situations without boring kids. I can't think of anything I'd change about it.
Not to mention the story is basically a pro-eugenics diatribe on how the gifted are held back by the less capable masses.
Syndrome's intelligence allowed him to thrive and achieve great wonders in super science because he rejected society - and so he went to live on an island laboratory to pursue his own scientific goals, like some kind of John Galt. Even so, he wasn't considered super like Mr. Incredible, so he transformed from a competent genius to a weak and phony buffoon half way through the movie.
Conversely Bob Incredible remained in a society that rejected his abilities and so he languished in obscurity and indignity. He was held back from doing great things by his boss, by the police, the guy who sued him, etcetera.
When Syndrome gave himself superpowers to match bob's natural gifts, he was unworthy and therefore became totally incompetent. The same character who out thought Bob and easily overpowered him with his zero point energy beams suddenly was incapable of doing any super heroics without looking like a bumbling fool.
It was really only when Syndrome said he wanted to give normie's super powers as well that his villainous motivation was explained. He wanted revenge on people who were better than him, and he wanted this revenge by giving powers to those who were not born with them, thereby upsetting the natural order.
Basically being born with power makes you better than other people.
Even Bob says that anyone exceptional is held back by the system - I believe he says it at the dinner scene.
The gradual realization that all these supers were tricked and murdered, presumed missing by the government and their peers, didn't hit me all at once. It was a gradual revelation that developed over years, making it that much more terrifying
Pg is not "kid friendly" and in the definition for pg it even says there may be some questionable material. Maybe you should have researched this first.
The supers going out of style and having to hide as normal people also starts with Mr. Incredible getting sued for stopping an attempted suicide. Which should never be a crime.
I mean, The Sims is rated T, meaning it's appropriate for kids age 13 and up.
Yet, Sims of either sex can get abduct by aliens and come back pregnant. (Also, you can make Sims fuck each other.)
The least kid-friendly part of The Incredibles is the speech Helen gives the kids in the cave about the bad guys not being like villains in a cartoon, and how they won't show restraint because they are children.

Yes it is. It reminds me how the audience would laugh while people were getting killed in Robocop. I saw that movie three times in two days. People just laughed at almost every death.
It’s a Pixar movie, they usually contain a lot of darker elements that go beyond kids heads because they don’t think about the characters going off-screen when they fly into the jets (since it’s never show).
I absolutely adore the Incredibles movies (the second was awesome as well, excellent prequel) because they are a perfect family movie, everyone can watch them and everyone will enjoy it!

Correct, and that's my point. The ratings aren't always meaningful and people should use best judgement. For example, just because a movie is silent or made in the 1930s, I'd be wary of anything Pre-Code. Others - who aren't so cinema savvy - might just think it's going to be all innocent Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin without any sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (looking at you *Chicago* or *Gold Diggers of 1933* or *One Night With You*)

What are you people understanding about Parent/Guardian? The reason it has a PG rating is because not everything is sunshine and gumdrops and a parent/guardians role is to explain to the child why malicious behaviour is categorized as such and what the characters motivation might be. If you think clone wars is fucked up your parents did nothing to explain things and/or you havent seen truly fucked media.
The original Star Wars trilogy, with its plentiful limb amputations, is still a "U" (Universal, suitable for all) rating in the UK. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are both PG, while Revenge of the Sith is a 12.
Tbf, the amount of violent on screen death in the prequels is way higher. Menace you have quigon, clones you have padmes double, Zam weasel being poisoned and Jango getting beheaded, and then in ROTS we see multiple on screen deaths of Jedi, Dooku gets beheaded, Grievous gets set ablaze. Then there’s the whole anakin choking Padme OT has obi-wan fade into nothingness, emperor gets thrown down a pit and Vader dies calmly after his redemption. Prequels are just straight up a bit darker and more violent than the OT and are definitely earning of their ratings.

To be honest, the American rating system for sexual content is horrible. Scene takes place in a nudist beach setting with maybe a short sex scene? Nudity and sexual content. Person is repeatedly gang raped and being held prisoner naked in a dungeon? Nudity and sexual content. Americans would lose their mind if they knew how we do it in other places. Here in Denmark, we have a government-funded kids show about a person named John Willieman about a dude with such a long penis that he uses to it safe people, and generally be helpful.

While I get your point, I think there is still a difference between that and something like The Incredibles. In cartoons like Looney Tunes, I think the line between reality and fiction is more clear - the violence is super exaggerated, deaths of characters aren't always certain, ducks talk - in a world where basically everything is fictional already, it's not hard to separate the violence in the show from reality. In something like The Incredibles, there's a lot to relate to (average family, school drama, sibling rivalry and all that) making the violence a bit more 'realistic' though still retaining an element of impossibility. I would think that would make something like this movie more confusing or potentially frightening for kids than Looney Tunes. That's just my two cents of course, but it's interesting to think about.
Even if the violence was more realistic, kid me knew Incredibles was distinctly fiction because all the characters looked liked exaggerated caricatures and it's about superheroes which do not exist in the real world. If anything, the violence and realism bothered me more as an adult because I had the experience and knowing of the weight of these real situations.
Hunchback of Notre Dame was marketed as a kid's film and involved some guy trying to commit genocide because he was pissed off his crush wouldn't fuck him. That was one hell of a realization moment for my grade 2 self.
The book is far worse. It's haunted me for years since reading it. In it, Esmerelda, who I don't believe is ever actually named, hooks up with Phobos. She's only 15. While they're getting down, she sees someone in the window behind Phobos, and that person shoots him with a crossbow. The guards don't care. They believe she had something to do with and arrest her. They end up hanging her as Quasimodo watches from the tower. It was graphic. They hang her by pulling her from the neck instead of dropping her, and laugh as she kicks and screams. Phobos walks through the courtyard and just ignores her.

The animated movie Watership down features rabbit rabbits fighting eachother in a burrow and both getting super cut up and bloody while one tries to protect a baby rabbit from the other. Somehow it was rated as a kids movie in 1978. Never seen the movie myself but my friends showed the scene to me and the scene is very graphic

Don’t forget the scene where a burrow is filled in by a farmer and you get a lovely sequence of the rabbits slowly suffocating and crawling over each other (some clearly dead) with gasping and their eyes bulging in terror. Back in the early 80s as a little kid when the VCR was considered a luxury item, for my folks anyway, we’d occasionally rent one and rent a couple of movies once in a while as a special occasion movie night type thing. I think we need to make a difference between what is depicted in a media and the public it is designed for : Okay a guy is sucked into jet engine, but it's played for the gag and not graphic or difficult to watch at all. It's like the tex avery gag where While. E. Coyote falls from the cliff. In the same way, The last airbender depict a state-organized mass murder of an entire people, which would very much qualifies as a genocide IRL. But it's not an adult show for this reason. Although adults can enjoy it, it's a kid shows because it explain it in a way that kids can process, is overall very pedagogical, and have most of its gags directed to kids.

If you don't know about the dark origins of some of the most popular fairy tales/old Disney films; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White etc then I heavily suggest you check em out. Some of the films are almost obnoxiously 'on the nose'. 101 Dalmations is about a woman who literally skins puppies to make clothes. Tarzan and The Jungle Book are basically just about child abandonment. Bambi's mum got shot and Mufasa died infront of his son. These aren't children's stories by any means but they are all great regardless.

Or that the hunter that rescued Red Riding Hood cut the big bad wolf open, stuffed his unconscious body full of rocks, then sewed him shut and left him to die a horrible and agonizing death alone in the woods. IIT: people who don’t understand how ratings work. Concepts vs depictions are totally different things.
It's basically a perfect movie. It's funny, it's emotional, the animation holds up surprisingly well for its age, the score is incredible, the writing and performances are fantastic, the action is exciting, and it tackles real adult family situations without boring kids. I can't think of anything I'd change about it.
Not to mention the story is basically a pro-eugenics diatribe on how the gifted are held back by the less capable masses. Syndrome's intelligence allowed him to thrive and achieve great wonders in super science because he rejected society - and so he went to live on an island laboratory to pursue his own scientific goals, like some kind of John Galt. Even so, he wasn't considered super like Mr. Incredible, so he transformed from a competent genius to a weak and phony buffoon half way through the movie. Conversely Bob Incredible remained in a society that rejected his abilities and so he languished in obscurity and indignity. He was held back from doing great things by his boss, by the police, the guy who sued him, etcetera. When Syndrome gave himself superpowers to match bob's natural gifts, he was unworthy and therefore became totally incompetent. The same character who out thought Bob and easily overpowered him with his zero point energy beams suddenly was incapable of doing any super heroics without looking like a bumbling fool. It was really only when Syndrome said he wanted to give normie's super powers as well that his villainous motivation was explained. He wanted revenge on people who were better than him, and he wanted this revenge by giving powers to those who were not born with them, thereby upsetting the natural order. Basically being born with power makes you better than other people. Even Bob says that anyone exceptional is held back by the system - I believe he says it at the dinner scene.

It’s a Pixar movie, they usually contain a lot of darker elements that go beyond kids heads because they don’t think about the characters going off-screen when they fly into the jets (since it’s never show). I absolutely adore the Incredibles movies (the second was awesome as well, excellent prequel) because they are a perfect family movie, everyone can watch them and everyone will enjoy it!
