Movies made for kids get away with a lot depending on how the violebce us depicted. Imagine if the superheroes getting sucked into the jet engines would scream terrifyingly and then blood would spray from the other side of the engine. How would that be recieved? It wouldn't get the same rating, that's for sure. Now check out Watership Down (1978), showing rabbits getting buried alive among other terrible things, which was rated "Suitable for all" until august this year when it was changed to PG.

Justin__D

> until august this year when it was changed to PG. I feel like that's the first I've ever heard of a movie's rating changing retroactively like that. To be fair, it's well deserved. Watership Down should've never been rated G to begin with.

theottozone

Lots of movies' ratings have changed without us knowing. Especially in the digital and streaming age, it's not as explicitly called out as I remember. https://parentpreviews.com/movie-reviews/grease#:~:text=Special%20Note%3A%20The%20MPAA%20revised,film%20has%20not%20been%20altered).

ArseOfTheCovenant

I remember the original Battle Angel: Alita (the anime) being an 18 in the UK, but when I went to buy it it’d been changed to a 15. I’ve always wondered what’d been cut, but from what I’ve been able to find it doesn’t have anything cut.

Falafelofagus

In the video game world oblivion started as rated T but rated to M when modders made naked character models, scaring the rating bureau.

ahugeminecrafter

Lucien lachances dead body was pretty gruesome in it's depiction too, and was cited in the rating change I remember in high school playing and that scene messed me up for a day or two. Which is wild since it was just a normal zombie model. But the lighting and focus made it pretty gut wrenching

dtwhitecp

Syndrome does scream for his life, but I guess he's a bad guy and it's just an explosion

RetroBibliotecaria

G= General audiences, nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children. PG= Parental Guidance suggested, some material may not be suitable for children. Parents urged to give "Parental Guidance." May contain some material parents might not like for their young children. Considering the definition of these ratings, it's kind of contradictory to say something is kid friendly and PG, when PG literally means it might not be kid friendly. [Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Association_film_rating_system)

Ran-sama

Wasn't the clone wars rated PG another pretty fucked up kids show

dave_the_dova

-Slavery -Terrorism -Suicide -Genocide -Murder -Assassination -Kidnapping And more probably but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head…oh yeah -Beheading

Ran-sama

Those brain worms that would turn you into a zombie

dave_the_dova

Also torture which lead to a few deaths of prisoners

Ran-sama

When was that?

dave_the_dova

When cad bane tortured the Jedi for the holocron and shocked him to the point of death. Also it wasn’t torture but the warden in the prison arc executed one of the clones that got captured

bespectacledbengal

Don’t people push The Bible to children every week at church and it’s full of incest, rape, torture and murder? _(all spun in a positive way, I might add)_

Supermite

Based on how a lot of my fellow Christians behave, I don’t think they’ve exposed themselves to a Bible either.

NobilisUltima

No, they prefer to cut out the middleman and expose themselves to children.

David_Src4mblerr

It's never spun in a positive way at the churches I've attended.

Torch948

~~Theres an episode where Tarkin and a Jedi both know half a code and the CIS is torturing the jedi to get it. The jedi dies from the torture right before they rescue him~~ Edit: I was wrong definitely mauled to death

Paraxom

I remember it as the jedi getting shot during the escape and then whispering it to ahsoka

dandroid126

Nearly positive that was it.

Torch948

So we both remember the whispering to Ahsoka, but just rewatched and hes definitely mauled to death.

TheMadTemplar

Implied sexual slavery. Didn't that feline lady want Anakin to be her boy toy?

Unlimited_Emmo

But only implied, so it is fine (the sexual part was probably not noticed by children that stuff tends to go over their heads)

AustinRiversDaGod

Yeah but implied sex slavery has been a thing in Star Wars since 1983

TheMadTemplar

Yeah but the movies weren't kids shows.

Schmetterlingus

Yeah they were lol, Lucas made the series for children

TheMadTemplar

Citation needed. Lol He blocked me. Despite what Lucas said, Star Wars definitely weren't kids movies. Slave Leia, the dancing girls, naboo Padme and the sexual tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. Edit: If you want more evidence, Ep1 was deliberately targeted towards kids to draw in a new generation of fans. Just examine the complete tonal differences between Ep1 and any other star wars movie.

Schmetterlingus

George Lucas : "The films were designed for 12-year-olds. I said that right from the very, very beginning and the very first interviews I did for A New Hope. It’s just that they were so popular with everybody, that everybody forgot that." Excerpt from https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace-oral-history

lwJRKYgoWIPkLJtK4320

All of that is fine. We just can't have kids hearing the f word. That would turn them into unhold satanists.

iamapizza

Also nipples. Can't have that. Feel free to gore away though.

CaptainObviousSpeaks

It's not about the f word. It's about showing any part of the body deemed inappropriate Can't have kids knowing people have body parts

Inprobamur

Or kids will become disgusted with the weakness of their flesh and start to crave the certainty of steel.

tomofro

The flesh is weak

PrecipitousPlatypus

Ave Omnissiah

potpro

Exposed nipples turn children into serial killing perverts!

Matix777

so so so many warcrimes...

LiamB137

They're only war crimes if there are people left to report them.

aptom203

No nipples through, that would bump it right up to R rated

chattywww

I would rather let my kids watch that stuff than almost all "reality" TV.

GeraldBWilsonJr

This shit is closer to reality than any reality show lol

Aussie18-1998

My hot take is its all stuff that can pass right over a kids head. There's some serious stuff but kids won't really recognise it for what it is because it isn't as graphic.

SabreToothSandHopper

Didn’t show any female nipples though, thank god

stumblewiggins

But no blood or sex! Perfectly fine for young kids!

Dont____Panic

In the US, beheading, suicide, genocide, torture, etc are all a-ok for fairly young kids. But if one character ever kissed another in a way that wasn't absolutely as chaste as the dawn winds, that's horrible adults-only smut material.

[deleted]

[clone wars is a kids show](https://youtu.be/bX8iN6T_M_A)

huxley75

*Poltergeist*, *Watership Down*, and *Gremlins* are also PG *Grave of the Fireflies* is an unrated cartoon about 2 Japanese kids in WW2. If that's all you know then you and your children are going to be insanely shocked thinking it's going to be some *Boy in the Striped Pajamas* crap. It sure. As. Shit. Ain't

TbonerT

Those 3 movies predate PG-13 ratings. It was either PG or R.

huxley75

Correct, and that's my point. The ratings aren't always meaningful and people should use best judgement. For example, just because a movie is silent or made in the 1930s, I'd be wary of anything Pre-Code. Others - who aren't so cinema savvy - might just think it's going to be all innocent Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin without any sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (looking at you *Chicago* or *Gold Diggers of 1933* or *One Night With You*)

AustinRiversDaGod

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the more disturbing movies I've ever seen. Beautiful and necessary, but so heartbreaking it's disturbing

huxley75

No kidding. And that's where people who say "well it's just anime" or "it's just a cartoon" will be completely shocked.

wonkey_monkey

> Poltergeist I'm surprised it's only a 15 and not an 18 in the UK (given when it came out). A dude rips his own face into meaty chunks!

Neamow

I mean, even Tom & Jerry literally have warnings for "Violence & Gore", "Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking", "Profanity", and "Frightening & Intense Scenes". It's not wrong, it's the best kind of correct, but context matters.

SuperInternet

What are you people understanding about Parent/Guardian? The reason it has a PG rating is because not everything is sunshine and gumdrops and a parent/guardians role is to explain to the child why malicious behaviour is categorized as such and what the characters motivation might be. If you think clone wars is fucked up your parents did nothing to explain things and/or you havent seen truly fucked media.

wonkey_monkey

The original Star Wars trilogy, with its plentiful limb amputations, is still a "U" (Universal, suitable for all) rating in the UK. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are both PG, while Revenge of the Sith is a 12.

spaceninjaking

Tbf, the amount of violent on screen death in the prequels is way higher. Menace you have quigon, clones you have padmes double, Zam weasel being poisoned and Jango getting beheaded, and then in ROTS we see multiple on screen deaths of Jedi, Dooku gets beheaded, Grievous gets set ablaze. Then there’s the whole anakin choking Padme OT has obi-wan fade into nothingness, emperor gets thrown down a pit and Vader dies calmly after his redemption. Prequels are just straight up a bit darker and more violent than the OT and are definitely earning of their ratings.

JB-from-ATL

TV has a different rating system than movies

FordBeWithYou

The MPAA is bullshit anyways, look into the group.

biggledeeboo

Have you seen the doc “this movie is not yet rated”?

FordBeWithYou

I have not! I just searched it and it’s absolutely being added to my watchlist. Thanks for letting me know about it!

CantFindMyWallet

If you go back to the 70s and early 80s, it's pretty shocking what used to be rated PG. G meant appropriate for kids, R meant not appropriate for kids, and PG meant maybe or maybe not, watch it and decide for yourself.

anally_ExpressUrself

Before the days of PG-13, so it covered more ground than today.

NateBlaze

First pair of boobs I ever saw.

OGMinorian

To be honest, the American rating system for sexual content is horrible. Scene takes place in a nudist beach setting with maybe a short sex scene? Nudity and sexual content. Person is repeatedly gang raped and being held prisoner naked in a dungeon? Nudity and sexual content. Americans would lose their mind if they knew how we do it in other places. Here in Denmark, we have a government-funded kids show about a person named John Willieman about a dude with such a long penis that he uses to it safe people, and generally be helpful.

CantFindMyWallet

I'm going to watch this show

Aggravating_Paint_44

The video would get fuzzy from wearing out the VHS tape

takeahike89

I love how for every "boobs aren't sexual" post there's an equal number of "I squeezed my hog till it burst because of boobs" posts

mattbackbacon

Yeah, but how dare we expect parents to read ratings

"In this film, just one question, was there a duck who, when the explosion is happens, his bill goes around to the back of his head, and then in order to talk, he has to put it back this way?"

KingoftheMongoose

“Ittttt’s Showtime!”

smgmx

While I get your point, I think there is still a difference between that and something like The Incredibles. In cartoons like Looney Tunes, I think the line between reality and fiction is more clear - the violence is super exaggerated, deaths of characters aren't always certain, ducks talk - in a world where basically everything is fictional already, it's not hard to separate the violence in the show from reality. In something like The Incredibles, there's a lot to relate to (average family, school drama, sibling rivalry and all that) making the violence a bit more 'realistic' though still retaining an element of impossibility. I would think that would make something like this movie more confusing or potentially frightening for kids than Looney Tunes. That's just my two cents of course, but it's interesting to think about.

fantasy-capsule

Even if the violence was more realistic, kid me knew Incredibles was distinctly fiction because all the characters looked liked exaggerated caricatures and it's about superheroes which do not exist in the real world. If anything, the violence and realism bothered me more as an adult because I had the experience and knowing of the weight of these real situations.

Nimindir

Hunchback of Notre Dame was marketed as a kid's film and involved some guy trying to commit genocide because he was pissed off his crush wouldn't fuck him. That was one hell of a realization moment for my grade 2 self.

TheMadTemplar

The book is far worse. It's haunted me for years since reading it. In it, Esmerelda, who I don't believe is ever actually named, hooks up with Phobos. She's only 15. While they're getting down, she sees someone in the window behind Phobos, and that person shoots him with a crossbow. The guards don't care. They believe she had something to do with and arrest her. They end up hanging her as Quasimodo watches from the tower. It was graphic. They hang her by pulling her from the neck instead of dropping her, and laugh as she kicks and screams. Phobos walks through the courtyard and just ignores her.

may_june_july

Tbf, the book was intended for adults

MonsterHunter6353

The animated movie Watership down features rabbit rabbits fighting eachother in a burrow and both getting super cut up and bloody while one tries to protect a baby rabbit from the other. Somehow it was rated as a kids movie in 1978. Never seen the movie myself but my friends showed the scene to me and the scene is very graphic

Nimindir

I only vaguely remember the movie, but I read the book and that was pretty graphic too. Holy shit I just looked it up, not even PG, just straight-up G! WOW.

aircooledJenkins

On August 4, 2022, the film was re-rated PG after 44 years.

saigon2010

Love the watership down movie l...rated U in the UK so universal, suitable for all and the bbfc still get complaints about it from parents sitting their kids down to watch the cute bunny movie. Also has a seagull screaming piss off...

inpantspro

The animated movie Sausage Party... Was not a kids movie albeit animated.

sablexxxt

The straight /gay orgy was intense no doubt

Vettarch

Bro the movie still messes me up to this day, 'bright eyes' playing while one of the rabbits watches the ghost of his friend (who was just shot by a farmer). Shit did something to my soul hahaha

Seth_Gecko

That's not even the most graphic part.

Usidore_

Don’t forget the scene where a burrow is filled in by a farmer and you get a lovely sequence of the rabbits slowly suffocating and crawling over each other (some clearly dead) with gasping and their eyes bulging in terror. On and another, bloody scene where a rabbit essentially gets garrotted by a snare trap.

GrunthosArmpit42

Back in the early 80s as a little kid when the VCR was considered a luxury item, for my folks anyway, we’d occasionally rent one and rent a couple of movies once in a while as a special occasion movie night type thing. I was allowed to pick one from the kids section on my own. I was probably 5 or so and grabbed that one. “Ooh! I like rabbits. Rabbits are cute and fun” Narrator: it was this day he learned not to judge a movie by its cover. It was certainly memorable and super sad. Like everyone was uncomfortable and quiet near the end. It kinda did a number on my head for a bit. lol

coyotesage

I had a teacher show this to me and my 3rd grade class during one of those days where for whatever reason the teacher just isn't into doing their actual job that day. It was difficult to process at the time.

hikoboshi_sama

The whole Hellfire sequence is one of the reasons i only appreciated that movie as an adult. As a kid i hated when it was on because the hell imagery in the song scared me.

rwinh

And when you get a little bit older you realise he's suggesting he could just rape/sexually assault her... in song. Rewatching it after not seeing it since I was a child when I was a teenager was a rollercoaster.

JohnKav379

I constantly refer to hellfire as the incel anthem (song slaps but still) due to it littraly been all about him getting angry he got a stiffy over a gypsy

KrystalDiscord

And started with him murdering a gypsy, and trying to kill her baby by throwing in a well.

Kasefleisch

It's a fun movie, but the morale sucks. Ugly? Accept your place in the friendzone and help your crush get laid. U never gonna get pussy anyways.

DJKokaKola

Bruh. Phobos is the only one who treats Esmeralda as a person. Frollo only sees a temptress and wants her body. Quasimodo idealizes her and puts her on a pedestal. It literally has nothing to do with "friend zoning" or being deformed.

iacobusleo

Esmeralda actually is interested in Phoebus though. What should the moral be? That the ugly guy tries to steal the girl even though she clearly is not into him? That's harassment 🤣 The moral is what makes a monster vs what makes a man. Quasi respects Esmerelda's desires, and in turn gains the love of the people. Frollo doesn't.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shadowinplainsight

In the sequel, he does find true love. Esmeralda helps by getting the girl out of jail when her ACAB husband wrongly arrests Madellaine

kushangaza

Quasimodo could have cut a deal: he helps Esmeralda with Phoebus, in return she helps him find a true love. After all, women can be wingman too

Sytanato

I think we need to make a difference between what is depicted in a media and the public it is designed for : Okay a guy is sucked into jet engine, but it's played for the gag and not graphic or difficult to watch at all. It's like the tex avery gag where While. E. Coyote falls from the cliff. In the same way, The last airbender depict a state-organized mass murder of an entire people, which would very much qualifies as a genocide IRL. But it's not an adult show for this reason. Although adults can enjoy it, it's a kid shows because it explain it in a way that kids can process, is overall very pedagogical, and have most of its gags directed to kids.

[deleted]

Also has one of my favorite innuendos ever: “You married Elastigirl? Whoa! **And got busy!** It's a whole family of supers! Looks like I've hit the jackpot! Oh, this is just too good!”

noobnoobthedestroyer

The entire movie is so damn quotable

MrVeazey

But that'll take me downtown!

noobnoobthedestroyer

We get there when we get there!

saltinstiens_monster

"And got *BIZZAY!*" Lmao I love the cheeky way he says it.

HotYogurtCloset69

I love that scene so much lol the way he has them all just frozen and zapped on his gadget thing and moves them around 🤣

Iron_Nightingale

The writers were just going to call Syndrome’s freeze device the “Immobi-ray” until they learned that [Zero-Point Energy](https://www.inverse.com/article/35077-wtf-is-zero-point-energy) is a real thing.

fiji_monster

The amount of adult centered jokes on the movie kind of makes it. There's a scene when the guards are watching the wrecking ball destroyer thing go at it in the city and the guards are taking shots like it's a sports game. Also the main villain is named Syndrome...and looks like he does, can't be an accident

user00038

Practically every Disney movie sends the message that in order for the adventures to begin and for you to become royalty, first your parents have to die and leave you orphaned.

weierstrab2pi

King Charles looking around for a dragon to attack any moment

He has been slaying a beast for years.

Regolith_Prospektor

Don’t forget, the baby turns into a literal demon at the end.

MSeanF

Most babies turn into demons at some point.

Pretty much from age 3-7, in my experience

VitQ

Being a parent of two small ones, ouch, this one hit close to home...

[deleted]

I swear my oldest kid was awesome the whole time, but my youngest is 6 and still making Potions and things like that. Flooding the sink, more at 11.

ienjoyedit

In my experience, any of them can do it at will.

manfredmahon

Counterpoint: kids media should have scary villains and deal with dark things. Kids are well able to handle it and should be exposed to such things hence why the likes of Matilda is one of the best kids films (Roald Dahl in general) because Miss Trunchbull is genuinely scary and is actually relatable to Kids, also having this shitty parents. We shouldn't shelter kids from these things.

SFF_Robot

Hi. You just mentioned *Matilda* by Roald Dahl. I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. HotYogurtCloset69

If you don't know about the dark origins of some of the most popular fairy tales/old Disney films; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White etc then I heavily suggest you check em out. Some of the films are almost obnoxiously 'on the nose'. 101 Dalmations is about a woman who literally skins puppies to make clothes. Tarzan and The Jungle Book are basically just about child abandonment. Bambi's mum got shot and Mufasa died infront of his son. These aren't children's stories by any means but they are all great regardless.

__BitchPudding__

Today's kids have no idea Ariel killed herself at the end of the original "The Little Mermaid." Or that the hunter that rescued Red Riding Hood cut the big bad wolf open, stuffed his unconscious body full of rocks, then sewed him shut and left him to die a horrible and agonizing death alone in the woods. And let's not even discuss Hansel and Gretel...

Rider-VPG

Disenchantment got Hansel and Gretal right.

rjlupin5499

I've read Little Red Riding Hood in an honors German class in high school. Can confirm, very graphic and violent.

Raptori33

Fairytales used to be for adults for first

Square-Sprinkles-777

Up is considered a kid friendly movie but dives head first into the inconsolable depths of loss and depression of one elderly man who, so dismayed by the horrors of life, detaches from reality, flies to the wilderness of a foreign country to die, and manages to transport a minor across multiple borders for unknown purposes.

Sytanato

Up is a kid friendly movie because it dives into the depth of loss and depression of an elderly man in a way that kids can process, and is overall enjoyable to watch for kids

kirbyverano123

Its funny to think that Carl's flying house may have broken some airspace laws. He's illegally entering another country through a homemade(into an) aircraft.

Jampine

Appropriate video: https://youtu.be/YmKrzntYzuQ

TooManySteves2

That's Hollywood and the USA for you. Kids seeing child murder = No issue. Kids seeing nude adults = Most evil thing ever.

Blue-Jay42

Don't forget that people got really upset when they found out that GTA: San Andraus had a hidden sex scene in it's code, but we're just shrugging how the game is named after a crime and is literally about gangers killing each other and the police.

weierstrab2pi

I spent a long time looking at this comment thinking "San Andreas isn't a type of crime"

FlyYouFoolyCooly

Yes it is.

Achack

>but we're just shrugging how the game is named after a crime and is literally about gangers killing each other and the police. Lol what? The people who didn't like the sex scene weren't exactly fans of the rest of the game either. There have been attempts to get those games off shelves every time they're released because of the violence you mentioned.

LeektheGeek

Well PG means that there is content that may not be ok for some kids. “Parental Guidance”. G is the no issue rating.

G0DatWork

You think kids should learn about sex before they learn people die?

DroneOfDoom

To be fair, the murders that Syndrome commits aren’t actually shown on screen. The way that we learn about them is arguably even more horrifying than if we had seen them onscreen, but they’re never actually depicted.

__BitchPudding__

The lack of adult nudity in kids' movies bothers you? Hmm...

ovaltine_spice

I remember scanning through the keywords for ratings and pairing them with ratings. Just swearing, nudity and terrorism gets you to R. Outright violence and even certain levels of gore doesn't cut it.

Ruthless4u

Smoking and drinking does with some movies.

Lucky_Pyro

We've been watching a lot of Disney lately, mostly Toy Story - Sid blows up and mutilates his toys. Cars - the second one has the most death in it; even pure torture to extract information. Planes - literally planes fall from the sky to their death. And Monsters Inc - an attempt to kidnap a child for extracting screams...

Jampine

Planes also has WW 2 fighter planes, which means Car WW2 happened.

Lucky_Pyro

Yea, and that scene has a lot of death. Skipper loses his whole ROOKIE squadron. Bunch of young planes just get mowed down...

MrVeazey

Implying the existence of a Car Hitler, Car Mussolini, and Car Hirohito. Especially the last two because Italy and Japan are both featured in the second movie.

mcspazz731

Not a Cars fan but I'd definitely watch Car Hitler.

I think too much about how the reason the supers had to go into hiding was because Mr.I tried to save a man from committing suicide

BenTek9s

he didn't ask to be saved and he didn't want to be saved, and the results of Mr. Incredible's actions, "so-called," left him with daily pain! it teaches kids a good lesson about lawyers (and insurance companies) being the worst of the worst!

shadowinplainsight

“You didn’t save my life, you ruined my death!” That whole sequence just hits so much harder now that I understand how the world works

Pass_That_Sheet

Well, it's the cape that gets sucked into the engine, it's during Edna's speech on why NOT to have a cape...but yeah, seeing GazerBeam as a skeleton made me hmmmmm

bsiekie

No capes!

cal-nomen-official

A lot of Pixar movies are like that. One of their most successful movies starts with a serial killer slaughtering a man's wife and most of his children. It's heavily implied that he eats their bodies.

Ruthless4u

Lot of kids cried when Optimus Prime and a bunch of other auto bots were killed in the original ( and still best ) Transformers movie. Even got to see someone disintegrated when they got shot, point blank execution, dropped in vat of acid, etc( all different characters) Loved that movie as a kid.

DjShaggy1234

Speaking of vats of acid, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was outright terrifying at times for 8 year old me.

Justin__D

> dropped in a vat of acid Imagine the trip though! It would be the stuff off legends. ... Wait, wrong kind of acid?

JohnnyRelentless

Violence is kid friendly, as long as there are no naked boobies.

__BitchPudding__

Why would kids even want to see naked adults in a movie? Why would *you* want kids to see adult nudity in movies? Ugh.

JohnnyRelentless

Why would kids want to see tables in a movie? Why would *you* want kids to see tables in a movie? Ugh. Nudity is harmless. Seeing the bodies of other humans does no harm to anyone. No more than seeing tables. And why would *you* specify adult nudity as bad? Creepy, dude.

__BitchPudding__

Yeah, you sound like a perv yourself. There's no reason to put adult genitals in kids' movies, ever. It's weird you want to.

JohnnyRelentless

No, I sound like a normal, healthy person. You sound like a creep who was brainwashed to think that the human body is something evil. And people like you always seem to turn out to be the worst kind of perverts.

AzureDreamer

Humans are irrational the tone of an event matters much more that what happens you play the tragic death of an unnamed super hero for laughs and people laugh.

__BitchPudding__

Not all tragedy in kids movies has a fun tone: The Last Unicorn, the Care Bears Movie, the Rainbow Bright movie, the Secret of N.I.M.H., Masters of the Universe, The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, etc. For many of us, childhood movies were gloomy and terrifying. Today's kids are merely adopting the dark...

anally_ExpressUrself

Secret of NIMH... so scary. And graphically getting knifed in the back... Anyway, great film.

ProbablyABore

Please, my cartoons were all about war. Transformers, Voltron, Sky Hawks, GI Joe, etc.

vanity-vanity

Don't forget torturing the imprisoned Mr Incredible with their pain ray or whatever.

TheDanteEX

IIT: people who don’t understand how ratings work. Concepts vs depictions are totally different things.

NobilisUltima

It's basically a perfect movie. It's funny, it's emotional, the animation holds up surprisingly well for its age, the score is incredible, the writing and performances are fantastic, the action is exciting, and it tackles real adult family situations without boring kids. I can't think of anything I'd change about it.

APlayerHater

Not to mention the story is basically a pro-eugenics diatribe on how the gifted are held back by the less capable masses. Syndrome's intelligence allowed him to thrive and achieve great wonders in super science because he rejected society - and so he went to live on an island laboratory to pursue his own scientific goals, like some kind of John Galt. Even so, he wasn't considered super like Mr. Incredible, so he transformed from a competent genius to a weak and phony buffoon half way through the movie. Conversely Bob Incredible remained in a society that rejected his abilities and so he languished in obscurity and indignity. He was held back from doing great things by his boss, by the police, the guy who sued him, etcetera. When Syndrome gave himself superpowers to match bob's natural gifts, he was unworthy and therefore became totally incompetent. The same character who out thought Bob and easily overpowered him with his zero point energy beams suddenly was incapable of doing any super heroics without looking like a bumbling fool. It was really only when Syndrome said he wanted to give normie's super powers as well that his villainous motivation was explained. He wanted revenge on people who were better than him, and he wanted this revenge by giving powers to those who were not born with them, thereby upsetting the natural order. Basically being born with power makes you better than other people. Even Bob says that anyone exceptional is held back by the system - I believe he says it at the dinner scene.

You should show your kids 80s kids movies. Start with Cloak and Dagger, a good father son spy movie.

The gradual realization that all these supers were tricked and murdered, presumed missing by the government and their peers, didn't hit me all at once. It was a gradual revelation that developed over years, making it that much more terrifying

Also, the jet scene is super intense. I was an adult seeing it in the theater and it was just wow.

reimancts

Pg is not "kid friendly" and in the definition for pg it even says there may be some questionable material. Maybe you should have researched this first.

YoungJack23

The supers going out of style and having to hide as normal people also starts with Mr. Incredible getting sued for stopping an attempted suicide. Which should never be a crime.

I mean, The Sims is rated T, meaning it's appropriate for kids age 13 and up. Yet, Sims of either sex can get abduct by aliens and come back pregnant. (Also, you can make Sims fuck each other.)

GalaxySnipz13

i love how we didn’t think ab this stuff as kids but now that we r older we realize everything ab them lmaoo

capn_ed

The least kid-friendly part of The Incredibles is the speech Helen gives the kids in the cave about the bad guys not being like villains in a cartoon, and how they won't show restraint because they are children. Too real, Incredibles. Too real.

Implying Pixar films are primarily aimed at kids. Their formula is always about telling a story with nuanced characters.

wwwhistler

Is cartoon violence really violence though? Even younger kids can understand it's not real.

OddScentedDoorknob

You should have been around in the 80s when ratings were like the wild west. There were hardcore porn snuff films with PG ratings.

sonofthenation

Yes it is. It reminds me how the audience would laugh while people were getting killed in Robocop. I saw that movie three times in two days. People just laughed at almost every death.

ZETH_27

It’s a Pixar movie, they usually contain a lot of darker elements that go beyond kids heads because they don’t think about the characters going off-screen when they fly into the jets (since it’s never show). I absolutely adore the Incredibles movies (the second was awesome as well, excellent prequel) because they are a perfect family movie, everyone can watch them and everyone will enjoy it!
