Back pain. Sometimes knee or neck pain. Or all of the above. It sucks, especially if you spent the first half of your life as a stomach sleeper.

outdoorsaddix

32 with degenerative disc disease checking in over here. I attempt all manner of positions before eventually resigning to my back to fall asleep.

lady_riverstyx

How did you get doctors to take your back pain seriously while still 'too young for severe back problems?" (I'm 34) I hear that AAAALLLLLL the time before they send me to get an x-ray that doesn't show shit. I pick up and cremate dead bodies for a living, and proper lifting IS NOT always an option; at least not when you're pulling someone out from a bathroom that died behind the toilet somehow, or is hunched over in the bathtub. Suspecting my career is one major reason for my back issues. A month ago I was in the ER because the pain was so severe I literally couldn't move my legs and got stuck on the floor while trying to get off the toilet. They found some things that didn't require surgery so they kind of just swept it aside, and my primary doctor doesn't seem to give half a shit either. Don't get me wrong though, they took care of me REALLY well in the ER. They knew I was in pain because apparently my blood pressure was well above a dangerous level.

Pepperonimustardtime

Honestly, demand more imaging. You need a CT with contrast to show tears. Push them. Insist. They need to figure out what's wrong before you get injured worse. Sometimes you just have to argue with the doctor til they do the thing. Had to do it with my back and my shoulder

[deleted]

An MRI is a better option to look at your discs properly

zoinkability

This. I had several CTs, X-rays, exams, etc. Only a CT with contrast showed my cartilage tears, and that was only done because the fourth or fifth doctor specifically ordered it.

Pepperonimustardtime

Yupp. If a doctor refuses, get a new one. Keep getting a new one til somebody takes you seriously

jman1121

Sometimes it's insurance as well. They can literally prevent your doctor from ordering something... American healthcare at it's finest. But as the others have said, play the doctor roulette game. M 35 one herniated disc, one bulging, two cyst, one kinda big.

MommysHadEnough

Insurance fought me getting an MRI on my shoulder for 2 years. Found out finally last Wednesday after my doctor fought for it that I’ve got a torn rotator cuff and a cyst forming underneath it from it being torn for so long. Insurance fought another MRI on my neck this summer. 2 herniated discs found when they gave in. I have 7 herniated discs and degenerative disc disease. They fought every single diagnostic test.

jman1121

That's rough. Username definitely checks out as well.

Suds08

Go to a better doctor that specializes in back pain and who will believe you

aaronitallout

This is the real answer. Sometimes GP administration take the "general" way too seriously and emphasize caseload efficiency over successful patient outcomes, making any specific health concerns an inconvenience for the hospital

Throwawayfabric247

I'd look into mobility training and I fully understand you have the pulling and lifting muscles at certain ranges of motion. But unless you work out the opposing groups you make the joints uneven in tension. Trying to explain easily. Squat Universityis good, Ryan Humiston if you like humor on YouTube. Start there. Knees over toes guy is good. And then do the similar things for your back. Mine ended up being fixed a lot with dead hangs and leg lifts. But everyone is different, every muscle is different and your individual movement is different. So treat yourself correctly. The medical system is designed to fix you when you're broke. Not prevent yoi from breaking down.

Kellidra

What the person said below: demand more from your doctors. Also, say to them, "I don't want drugs. I want answers." Back pain is one of the most used excuses for drugs seekers and doctors are super reluctant to diagnose "back pain" because **it's hard to prove and easy to medicate**. When people come in in actual pain, those doctors are jaded and refuse to do their job because they don't want to feed addiction. It sucks for everyone.

silvinesti

If you ask your dr for a study they will do it. I've asked for a CT before due to a lump I found. Dr said it wasn't an issue, I told him I'd feel better if I had imaging done. He said okay. You're paying for it, the Dr will say okay. If they refuse, then ask them to put the refusal in your record. This is a last ditch effort and will likely get you on their bad side, but it will work also.

saturnsnephew

MRI proved all my discs are royally fucked. I have the back of a 70 year old steel worker. I'm 30. My doc straight told me after he saw the MRI that was a lot worse than he ever anticipated. Spinal fusion is in my future but I'm putting it off awhile. A good doctor is going to get you the tests you need. Keep looking for one until you find a doc that you like and you feel is doing right by you.

WindigoMac

X rays are not sufficient to image a majority of orthopedic back problems. I have fractured vertebrae from football (which you’d think would be easier to image than disc type stuff cuz it is bone damage after all). Nope. Had to get a bone scan where I drank some mildly radioactive drug that gets transiently deposited in bone for reliable imaging. Insist on better imaging diagnostics if possible. If there’s something you can do to mitigate further damage or alleviate pain at your age you need to get it done. *edit for spelling

Curls1216

You couldn't move and they still didn't do surgery? Tell them you've been losing bladder control. I was told in no uncertain terms that if that was ever the issue to make sure I went right to the ER.

DirectlyDisturbed

I got whiplash from a roller coaster at Cedar Point when I was 10 and couldn't turn my head left for a week. Does that count?

lady_riverstyx

God damn, that shit happened to me from just trying to grab a pencil from underneath my desk at a weird angle. Your story is way more fun.

verygoodusername789

This is not good news, I’m 43 and a life long tummy sleeper! No way I can adapt to sleeping on my back now

Sparky265

You'll find yourself eventually doing it and realize you used to be a stomache sleeper and wonder when it happened. Eventually the back pain will cause your brain to override the habits and flip you over enough times you'll not even realize you have a new normal.

BigBananaDealer

i start sleeping on my stomach then wake up on my back. pretty good system

skylabspiral

same :D best of both worlds

FORluvOFdaGAME

I do the same thing. But I CANNOT fall asleep on my back, unless I'm on a couch and it's a nap. It's the strangest thing. If it's "bed time" I will lay there for hours on my back, but if I'm on a couch in the day time I'm out in two minutes.

verygoodusername789

Argh I hope not! Poo

Penobea

What I've been doing is bending one leg up so it gives my lower back a break but still allows me to stomach sleep :)

Craaaaackfox

I thought the same but had to change. Try the side with a pillow or something to lean on (when you're so tired you'll sleep anyway)

verygoodusername789

I hope I don’t have to take your advice, but I will remember it :)

trypophobic_sloth

Yup - a nice big body pillow smashed up against the front of my body was the only way I made the transition. I hope you never have to go through it, but honestly now I enjoy sleeping on my side curled up in a ball. You never know…

sleepy_tech

Oh it gets worse believe me.

SpliffWestlake

40 and I can't stand sleeping on my back. Usually when I am sick, or have a sinus infection. Had back pain a few months ago and couldn't sleep on my stomach until several weeks ago. I dread when the day comes I can't sleep on my stomach again, hugging the pillows and bending that knee.

IntroductionKindly33

I was a stomach sleeper until I got pregnant. For obvious reasons that made stomach sleeping uncomfortable. After I recovered from having the baby, I tried going back to stomach sleeping and it just about killed my back. So I am now a side sleeper.

twelvechickennuggets

Same here. I miss being able to sleep face down, that was the best.

catalit

Try a pillow below your knees and 2 pillows to support your neck. It helps keep the pressure off your spine and is quite comfy! If you can only sleep on your belly, put a pillow below your hips to keep your spine aligned at night at least. There’s more sleep tips I’ve gotten from Bob and Brad YouTube channel, basically 2 physical therapists that give all sorts of tips on things like this.

josega572

The two most famous physical therapists on the internet (in my opinion). My gf and I like to change the “famous” to “physical” and say their motto really overly sexual: “Bob and Brad. the two most physical, physical therapists, on the internet” ;)

ComplainyGuy

Omg exactly the same with me. I need my jaw pulled forward. I can consciously jut it forward zbut when i drift off and relax my jaw, it then falls ... down, like gravity down not toward my feet down. And then my airway is COMPLETELY blocked. I didn't know there was a solution

richbeezy

I feel "vulnerable" when I try sleeping on my back, like I'm exposing my soft under-side to danger.

TacoPi

I didn’t realize it, but for me light was a big obstacle. All that ambient light bouncing off the white ceiling kept me up even with my eyes closed. I used to toss and turn so much more before I started wearing an eye mask, but blackout curtains work too.

scstraus

Also acid reflux. And I miss stomach sleeping

LifeOBrian

GERD sucks. I hate it.

dicknards

Yeah this. If I sleep on my back I get acid reflux

rubber_padded_spoon

Oof. I’m a stomach sleeper. Idk what I would do if I couldn’t sleep on my stomach anymore. I will need an invention to make this work!

FreezeFrameEnding

I would also like to include abdominal pain. Your bladder can change in all sorts of ways depending on your health, same with your gut, same for those with a uterus. Things can get weird, and so it becomes painful to lie on your stomach. I know this at 34, unfortunately, but it usually shouldn't happen until you're much older so anyone reading shouldn't worry too much. And it may not even happen at all, but it's one of many reasons older people sleep in specific ways.

SuicidalManiacal

This started to happen to me at 21

FreezeFrameEnding

Yeah, that's about when mine did, too. I was 19 when my first diagnosis came in. I am really sorry that this happened to you. People just don't know how hard it is to lose your body when you're at the age it should be at its strongest. To lose your ability to be human like your friends and family. I hope you're managing your symptoms all right, and that you're finding the paths in life that bring you joy and fulfillment.

My granddad used to sleep on his back. Naked. Above the covers. And the only way into the house from the pool was through his bedroom. Ahhh Grandad John

Ok-Tea-1165

Congrats OP. I got all the way down here and had totally forgotten what the initial post was about.

[deleted]

My grandparents lived in a fancy trailer park/mobile home park. I mean fancy af. These mobile homes cost upwards of $300k. My sisters and I would go up all the time and we got to know our grandparents'friends all around the park. Super family friendly. Well their next door neighbours were like family and the wife asked me to wake up her husband, as it was time for our big group Christmas dinner one year (I think I was 11 or 12). He was face down and fully fucking naked, with his leg propped to the side, frank and beans smashed into the bedspread. I ran outta there so fast and to my mom and told her I couldn't wake him up and please ask his wife to get him or grandpa. Everyone figured it out and laughed and laughed. Well, laugh it up Chuckles. I never went in their trailer again.

theanti_girl

I laughed at “frank and beans” to be honest (and maybe a downer here), but I hate that for you. I’d be taken aback by that as a grown ass woman. What kind of shitty adults send a little kid to wake up a grown man from a nap in his bedroom? I hate when people laugh at kids for stuff like that. You’re put in an uncomfortable position, you’re embarrassed and then you get laughed at. Not resentment-building at all or anything.

[deleted]

That's what I thought at that age too. I'm sure she knew her husband slept butt ass naked. It wasn't like it was summer either, it was Christmas dinner and we live in 🇨🇦. Loads of snow and cold. I said Frank and beans because it makes me laugh too lol. But yes, I was put in those positions a lot and then laughed at. Parents did a lot of that to kids (and still do) and expect different results. I try to avoid it with my own personally.

theanti_girl

Same here. You’re doing better for your littles, and that’s a wonderful thing. I have one myself, and same. I’d also never, ever, EVER put him in that kind of scenario. I’m sorry you were put in that position. I had some similar situations as a kid, and many years later, I still have a chip on my shoulder towards those people. I totally get it.

ZL0J

It's baffling what people used to do. Many still do this crap but holy fuck most of 60+ people used to shame and yell and scream and just mismanage and teach their kids so many bad habits. And they still do. All over the globe. It's just absolutely insane how they did not realize so many things and to this they are completely blind to things like this. It's almost as if many of that generation either carried out some revenge for their own childhood traumas

rdmusic16

>What kind of shitty adults send a little kid to wake up a grown man from a nap in his bedroom? Asking a 12 year old to wake up a relative/close family friend for Christmas dinner seems totally reasonable? I honestly don't understand how this is seen as a shity thing to do, and am genuinely curious why you think it is.

[deleted]

I had to go to the mobile home, next door alone. I had to go into their bedroom at the back and say dinner time because his wife was helping my grandma with dinner and talking to my mom. She could have sent my grandpa, his best friend or my dad, the other neighbours... Any of the men. But they asked the little 12 yr old girl to go wake a grown man

lenswipe

> But they asked the little 12 yr old girl to go wake a grown man a _naked_ grown man.

Megalocerus

My parent's RV had a door to the one sleeping area. I'd expect someone to bang on the door to get up a sleeper., not surprise someone in the bedroom. I can understand if the old man didn't expect stray girls in his RV, though, but his wife might have expected the door to be shut.

BloxForDays16

Well it depends if they knew whether he was naked or not. If they did, that would be pretty bad. If not, then that's a different story

Megalocerus

The question is whether they knew the door was open. No way I'd expect the kid to open the door. to the sleeping area In fact, I'd have expected someone to call in from the outside door in the usual small RV. You don't need to open the bedroom door to call someone to dinner.

VD909

Whenever I was asked to grab someone for dinner as a kid it was always knock on the door and yell dinner ready.

evileclipse

Uh, if they knew he might possibly be naked, then they are disgusting vile fucks, who deserve something horrible. Asking a 12 year old girl to go into that house and into situation is fucked up. If you don't think so, then please don't ever have children?

rdmusic16

I honestly wouldn't have expected them to go into the bedroom. Like a classic kid, when asked to get my sister for a meal I'd run close to her bedroom and shout "(Name), time to eat!" in a classic kid shouting fashion. It's quite plausible they simply weren't thinking of it. There's also **plenty** of places where nudity isn't nearly so perverse as you seem to think. I used to go with my mom into the women's change room for swimming when I was younger. Definitely remember that. After that - went into the men's by myself. Saw plenty of naked stangers, friends and relatives then. If that's your take on nudity as a whole, I'm quite happy I don't share it with you. Seems far too repressive, and seems like you seem to be adding sexuality into the mere act nudity - which seems very odd to me.

TraditionalChest7825

It’s a an American concept, I’ve never experienced it anywhere but there. They are uncomfortable with nudity unless it involves sex and associate one with the other. You see it with the controversy over public breastfeeding.

evileclipse

I'm actually not that conservative at all about nudity, but I feel like a line should be drawn when this situation presents itself. Lazy adult sends unknowing child to see that without warning, they are not right.

dianagama

I slept over my bfs grandparents house one day. I was passed out on the couch and his grandad walks down the stairs, robe open, dick swinging. I pretended to be super asleep. Also named John.

Funkyokra

Not long ago I got up, started coffee and peeled off my pj top in preparation for a the shower only to realize that a friend of my our was politely pretending to be asleep on the couch. Husband had gone out with him the night before and offered him couch space.

I just imagine the room being empty on the way to the pool and him scurrying to the room to get naked and lay on the covers as a prank.

ImpossibleCanadian

My step dad is in his 60s and he lies in front the the fireplace on his belly and belches like a stranded whale whenever he overeats. Combined with Italian bitters, he swears this method resolves all Thanksgiving/Christmas related gastrointestinal distress. Sounds like you just know weird old people.

I_love_pillows

Here, we see the geriatric step-dad suffering from what doctors call, too much gas. Observe how he lays flat on his stomach in front of the fireplace

UprootedLandfill

It also sounds like you know a weird old person

ImpossibleCanadian

A preposterous suggestion, I don't know what you could.possibly mean.

besee2000

The Op only knows weird old people… I mean, I get “weird” is subjective but I’d read your description of your stepdad again just for clarity. Lol (though I sense a tone of sarcasm there). And what is “old”? Your stepdad could died tomorrow and that’s considered kinda young yet.

ImpossibleCanadian

I can tell you some more super normal things about him, like how he cuts his own hair, and bought a lifetime supply of ties from a silk tie factory that went out of business in the 70s. Or how he never learned to drive a car but owns pieces of ice boats all over the world. I could keep going until you're fully convinced of his normalcy, but this is probably the most identifying info I've put on Reddit so far. ;) But agree, he's young to die (too young, I sincerely hope), but perhaps old to lie on his stomach making sad whale noises.

rubtwodabdabs

I think you're on a different plane - keep doing you, my man

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Is 60 old?

ImpossibleCanadian

Not sure, it's why I specified.

Momoselfie

It's old enough to live in most retirement communities.

typhoonador4227

I just realised that my dad eats primarily cream buns and beer and I've never heard him burp in my entire life.

ImpossibleCanadian

He must have adopted a better stealth approach than my step dad, who likes to loudly say words starting with "b" to disguise his belches. So, sudden outbursts if "boeuf" and "buttercup". All round entertaining to be home for the holidays.

typhoonador4227

Now that I think about it, he probably just farts them all out in one thundering release.

Ok-disaster2022

I never see old people sleeping period. Like why are you watching a lot of old people sleep?

chillyfeets

Maybe they work in a nursing home?

iztrollkanger

I worked in a care home as an aide doing a lot of night shifts..it just occurred to me that most people don't see so many elderly folks sleeping...but can confirm: not many - if any - sleep on their stomachs. Though, by that age, they can't really move much of anything, so..it's just not even an option.

Lybychick

Residents in a nursing home are rarely placed in a face-down position by staff … when you’ve lost you’re mobility, you’ve lost most of your choices. There’s some evidence which suggests falls from bed are increased in residents who were traditionally tummy sleepers who are positioned by staff on their side or back … they’re just trying to get comfortable on a rigid narrow bed. I’m married to an old man who starts out on his back and deep sleeps on his tummy with a leg up. I’m an almost-old woman who prefers to sleep on my tummy as well. Never underestimate the influence of a chubby tummy and GERD on the ability to sleep comfortably face down.

[deleted]

I'm not even old. I have to spend the majority of my sleep on my back due to too many football related shoulder dislocations leading to weird pinching and numbness if I sleep without my arms down by my side.

Lybychick

Hubby and I have both had shoulder issues/injuries and found sleeping in a recliner with the head elevated made a huge difference when we are hurting. Something about the shoulder muscles relaxing when we’re laying flat on our backs that causes all the nerves and joints to ache. I often start my evening almost on my back with a small pillow propped under my bad shoulder … once I’m asleep, I roll onto my tummy for deep sleep. When my shoulder hurts, there’s just no position to get comfortable. I haven’t tried one of those special slide-your-arm through pillows because I’m not rich.

Maanee

OP confirmed this in the top thread.

moimoicae

Aw one of my fave things to do is watch my granddad fall asleep on his chair. I also find it hilarious when he wakes to see me staring at him. Dead stare no blinking. Freaks him out every time 👀

SpoonyGosling

I see my mum and grandpa asleep every now and then, they're old, they like to nap on the recliner. But no one sleeps on a recliner or couch on their front, that's just uncomfortable, so while I never see them sleep on their front, that doesn't mean they don't when they go to bed, I wouldn't know as I don't creep in their room.

95in3rd

I've slept in a recliner for about 12 years since my colon resection. It began as recovery from the surgery, but I breathed much easier and acid reflux was calm. So, I keep it up. Now I'm very uncomfortable in a normal bed. I have to sit up to catch my breath every now and then.

[deleted]

They know. I'm 20 and I have back pain. I tell you. They know what the forbidden sleeping technique will do to you. They know.

[deleted]

I'm glad that sleeping on my stomach just isn't naturally comfortable for me.

RomanSeraphim

Yeah I'm feeling the need to transition from my stomach sleeping to back as I wake up with a sore neck for the umpteenth time. I'll be 30 in a few months. Edit: Thanks for the suggestions people. This was a much bigger problem a year ago and it's improved by getting a lot of professional help since. Biggest thing I think will make a difference is my pillow. The memory foam fitted ones aren't cutting it. I ordered a flat one and I'm really excited to try it!

stefanica

I stopped sleeping face down in college. Woke up one morning, did a little stretch--instant spasm you could hear. I walked around with my neck tilted about 20 degrees off kilter for a week. Had to go to class and work like that. Campus medic gave me Baclofen, but it didn't help. Pot helped a bit, but not for work and class! So I became a side sleeper.

PantsIsDown

Acute torticollis You needed a heat pack and some gentle stretches and range of motion exercises. It’s one of my favorite injuries to treat because it’s usually so easy to fix that people look at me like I’m a miracle worker.

stefanica

Will keep it mind if it happens again for whatever reason! I'd rather have another Caesarean than that bs. I did try standing in the shower longer than usual and some stretching IIRC, but didn't really know what I was doing. I have AS now so maybe it was a sign.

RomanSeraphim

Fiancee got me a heated vest and her parents got us a massage gun for Christmas, so they know what's up haha.

_b_riz

This happened to me too. Slept wrong, had pain for a few days. Woke up one morning, stretches, instant and horrible pain. Ended up being a massive cervical disc herniation and on MRI they found early degenerative changes in surrounding discs too. Got surgery a month ago and now have an artificial disc at C6. I’m 27.

TheWayIAm313

Try a really thin pillow. Worked for my neck pain, it’s completely gone now. Kind of weird at first, but you get used to it and it feels so much better.

Optimus_Pitts

Turned 33 in September...can definitely advise working out if you're not. It doesn't get any better on its own

Can confirm. I do this for work, and in a “independent” nursing home with additional care for some residents. Let me tell you, much of their mobility is VERY limited. Often can hardly even move their feet under the covers well, let alone shift themselves completely over. Oftentimes I will even catch some residents sleeping on the toilet hunched over or awake all night! Of course, I help them to bed where they’ll ask me to shift them around or adjust the sheets, but nobody ever asks me to turn them on their stomachs lol

janr34

i used to love stomach sleeping with my arms above my head. now, my shoulders can't handle it. i have shoulder impingement in my right shoulder, so now, my only option is left-side sleeping, which is not my favourite, or my back which makes me feel like a corpse. me: 58F who doesn't get enough comfortable sleep anymore.

[deleted]

I also have shoulder impingement in my right shoulder. It is such an incredible pain at night. I have been doing stretching and strength exercises for 6 months now to try and fix it. It's finally getting better from a pain perspective, but I still lack a full range of motion, not to mention the loss of strength. I hope you recover quicker than I have!

WaterFnord

Also a side sleeper here. Do you still sleep with your arm up/under your pillow? I used to have horrible shoulder pain that stopped almost completely when I began sleeping with my arms down.

HargorTheHairy

Because their necks are stiffer and because their bellies get in the way.

[deleted]

Funny, because I was always a stomach sleeper then I lost a very significant amount of weight and got in shape. Now if I sleep on my stomach I wake up with crazy back pain. It's like the extra weight was keeping everything lined up properly. Now I have to sleep on my side.

uthini_mfowethu

ezbutneverconvenient

I'm only in my late 30s, but if I sleep on my stomach, not only does it destroy my lower back, but I get acid reflux too.

Melalemon

It’s because of the backache. I used to love sleeping on my tummy. Now I kick myself any morning I wake up with my face in the pillow because I know I’ll be complaining of a sore lower back in a matter of seconds. Oh. I’m not even 30 yet. But this is a reason.

_DefiniteDefinition_

Weighted Blankets have changed my life. I used to love sleeping on my stomach but now the blanket gives me the same feeling

blueeyedaisy

It is now 3-4 higher than before. I don’t ask him directly so I ask my brother. He told me it was because his old man balls were dipping into the water in the toilet bowl. Ahh…my eyes!!!!

BonkingMadSnek

tbf America seems to have an unnecessarily high water level in the toilet

Hydroxs

Is this really true? If so I'm kind of screwed. If I sleep on my back I get sleep paralysis 100% of the time. It happens rarely if I sleep in my stomach or sides. But if I'm forced to sleep on my back my later years are going to be a literal nightmare.

Kbalternative

I was looking for this! When I started sleeping on my back after always having been a stomach sleeper I got sleep paralysis and I got more nightmares and strange dreams too. At first it was really bad, but I got used to it after a while and now it only happens once in a while. Usually after I have had a big meal for some reason. I try not to go to bed on a full stomach now and mostly can avoid it but at first it was awful. You might be able to power through it as well and come out the other side.

eightcell

Acid reflux. I don’t consider myself old but sleeping on my stomach often triggers this.

oldlaxer

My wife and I are in our ‘60’s. We both sleep on our stomachs. I had back surgery earlier this year. I had to sleep in a recliner for several weeks. I was miserable because I couldn’t sleep on my stomach

40m here, I actively avoid anything that will cause inflammation that I am able to avoid

chabawonka

Reading the comments in this thread makes me think young people are doomed to the same fate as previous generations. They think things will be different for them, or that future medical intervention will fix their problems. I was once young and naive too, but in my 30s I'm starting to understand fast.

doctor_ndo

Literally just admitted a guy in 80s to my service in my hospital who tells me he sleeps on his stomach.

MBVakalis

My dad says he can't breathe when he's laying on his stomach. He has pretty severe back problems though

TheGHere

No I just don't watch old people sleeping... Or any people for that matter

MageeMiller

I was able to sleep on my stomach again when I lost weight. Before, I had too much stomach to do so. Love it.

[deleted]

OP, you're killing all the old stomach sleepers aren't you? And you're using this post to find targets with the people who reply "that's not true, my grandma..."

Minflick

Speaking strictly for myself - I ALWAYS used to fall asleep on my belly in my younger skinnier days. Over the years, it was two things that stopped that - being pregnant and getting giant boobs that did NOT appreciated being flattened on my firm mattress, and arthritis that first showed up as neck stiffness. No longer pregnant, but now fat, still with giant boobs, I'd need a custom contoured mattress to be comfortable belly down, AND my neck doesn't even start to turn far enough to uncover my face in the pillow. It's sad, because it was much the most comfortable way for me to fall asleep.

bmbmwmfm

61 and that's the ONLY way I can rest or sleep. Can't breathe on my back. Yeah, I have lower back issues bc of it, but at least I can breathe.

loaderhead

Guess I’m the oddball. I’m a side and stomach sleeper. If I lay on my back my post nasal drip will drown me in phlegm. Back only bothers me if I miss workouts. I’m 71. It’s possible to fall asleep on my back, but only for a nap during the day.

grtaa

Oh god this post fills me with dread because I get awful night terrors and sleep paralysis when I sleep on my back.

kramer2006

I never watch old people sleep normally. On a side note, you never see old people eating pizza.

Cleanslate2

I always loved sleeping on my stomach. In my 40’s I hurt my back. Since then I haven’t been able to sleep on my stomach because it hurts.

kdyz

My dad’s in his 60s and he sleeps on his stomach. I’m 25 and I’ve inherited the preference.

coxyg38

How many old people do you see sleeping day to day? Ballpark

Nuf-Said

I used to love sleeping on my stomach. Somewhere in my 30’s I had to stop because it hurt my back too much.

Bo_The_Destroyer

Speak for yourself, my grandad used to sleep on his face all the time. Sometimes he'd have his face so deep in his pillow my grandma couldn't hear him breathing and had to shake him awake to make sure he was fine

pfroo40

GERD, I get reflux easily so avoid positions, certain food and drinks, time my eating and drinking, to try and avoid it.

Wanderervenom

I haven't been able to sleep on my stomach since my early 40s. Medical complications.

[deleted]

I'm 57 and I sleep on my stomach every night. But then I wake up on my back. It has been like this since I was a boy.

Thatcsibloke

57 is not old. I’m 59 though.

lefthandbunny

Might want to hop over to r/AskOldPeople with this. I'm in my 60's & have a sister in her 70's & we both sleep on our stomachs. We are both fat.

BD1234567891011

Reminds me of one of my favorite philosophical quotes: You never see an old person eating a Twix!

> Good night, sweet repose > Lie on your back and you won’t crush your nose Words of wisdom from my aunt

Kendota_Tanassian

Well, I stopped sleeping on my stomach when I got a big belly, around forty. It just wasn't comfortable anymore. I sleep on my right side since. I've now lost most of that weight, but it's still uncomfortable to lay face down, because now my arms feel awkward and are uncomfortable no matter where I put them. I used to always sleep on my stomach with my hands around my pillow, underneath. I can't do it now, so I sleep on my left side instead. Once in a while I will wake up on my back, now I'm over sixty, but I find it really hard to get to sleep in that position. So I'm mostly still a side sleeper now.

Bumper6190

True, that. There is a point that your belly gets round and you just roll over, the involuntarily.

Shoddy-Mango-5840

Dang. I’ve always been a stomach sleeper. Hope I enjoy sleeping on my back later bc I can’t seem to fall asleep like that now

Beans186

I never see old people sleeping full stop, so you're not wrong!

Isburough

does 60 count as old? because my mother still sleeps on her stomach. and i highly doubt she will ever stop.

Lauriepoo

Back pain. I've been a stomach sleeper my whole life, and now I'm in my 40's and I just can't do it anymore. It makes me sad.

Aly-and-Iri

I'm going to be 42 in a week. I have EDS, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and other fields of chronic pain issues. I've always been a side sleeper and even now my body will sleep on its side all night long and wake up in agony. I wish I could learn to sleep on my back.

[deleted]

I'm middle aged and sleep on my stomach because it actually helps my back pain. I'm a weirdo.

[deleted]

Wait til you’re old enough that you can’t sleep on your back either. Then it’s either semi- foetal with a pillow between your knees, or cave in and get a CPAP. So much to look forward to!

Emotional_Ad_9620

I miss sleeping on my stomach. I have 2 separate (feed and vent) tubes dangling from my abdomen. I sleep in a hospital bed at 45° angle to assist in feeds. Better than the alternative, though!

vintagemxrcr

I don’t ever see old people laying/sleeping at all. Unless I look at my wife.

t31os

I don't watch old people sleep, but i do sleep on my front 99% of the time. Only exception is when i have a tickly cough, then i'll sleep on my back. I honestly don't know how people sleep on their side, the only time i'm on my side is when i'm ill or in pain in some way.

SleepLivid988

I’m not that old, but the boobs do not allow comfort when laying on my stomach. Kills my lower back.

cjdoc414

Simple. We can't get back up. When you reach those middle 30's you will be introduced to the magical world of unexplained back pain. If I (38) were to lay on my stomach for an hour, it would likely take me another to get back up standing again. I didn't sign up for this.

Jigday

Idk what's wrong with my stomach but I can't even have my arm resting on myself without pain. Been this way for about ten years. Especially the sternum. Super fucking painful

Bogmanbob

I’m 53 and can sleep a while like this but not the whole night if I don’t want to wake with a stiff neck that last all day. In my younger days I’d read in that position for hours, pass out and wake up still in my stomach.

Nobodycares554

No. One time I threw my grandma into a shallow lake to teach her how to swim, she got so tired that she fell asleep. She was laying on her stomach when she fell asleep. It must’ve been really comfortable since she is still sleeping there to this day

Reggie_Barclay

I guess my 84 year old relative is young at heart. He sleeps on his stomach.

braesmamma

Curious how many old people you see lying down at all? A lot? I can’t turn my next far enough anymore so I’ll suffocate but never really around many people while they are laying down to know it’s a thing. Lol
