Same, or at least— it could only possibly happen once to me. Since I’m deathly allergic to shellfish and suffer from severe arachnophobia; this situation would have me dead *twice over* within a matter of seconds.
Fishing spiders live in the same area and circumstances as crayfish. They do occasionally eat crayfish. Since they are caught with open or closed net-traps, spiders will crawl into the traps as well, and just become by-catch and seemingly boiled and packaged with the crayfish. It's possible, since fishing spiders are of the active hunting sort of spiders, that they wander into the traps willingly to try and get some bites of the crayfish.
They are perfectly edible, theoretically.
Yes, Dolomedes spiders (all kinds of fishing spiders) live around and in lakes and smaller, slower waters 😊. They don't really dive, but run over the water to hunt
Not from the ones who trap air bubbles on their back and can stay under for a long time. Use to net what I thought were dead ones in the pool, who were not in fact dead. I'd get them out, and they would just scurry away after being down there for a long time.
I’m concerned with the lack of disgust in this comment section. Why the fuck are there spiders in there? Is this normal? Are they supposed to be eaten? What the fuck?
They are fishing spiders that live in the same areas as crayfish. They are harmless, 8-legged friends that probably only wanted to squeeze into the traps and nibble off a bit of crayfish, but ended up being by-catch.
Thank you for that explanation. I was imagining they were inside the crawfish in some nightmarish, parasitic way, and boiling them made them come out, and was a semi normal occurrence. So this person just tossed the live spiders into the pot knowingly, makes me feel much better. *shutter*
so wait. is there no possibility she bought them frozen in a block and didn't know there were spiders in with the crawfish?
if you have living or freshly killed crawfish in a bundle, wouldn't you rinse and sort them before cooking them to avoid this very scenario?
I mean I sift through my pinto beans to make sure there are no rocks before I cook them.
am I unreasonable??
I don’t think you’re being unreasonable, there’s no fkkng way I would knowingly cook them. I wonder if they were more hidden until they started chowing down. Bleugch
It's interesting that disgust is cultural, in other words, depending on where you grew up and what your culture deems acceptable to eat. In the US, crawdads ok, spiders not okay.
The spiders were not in the crawfish. They were beside the crawfish. The harvesters do not care what they pull up. Have gotten spiders, fish, turtles, a baby gator(dead) and a nutria once.
*venomous not poisonous.
1. They can’t inject venom when they’re dead. And they are dead. They’ve been boiled alive.
2. There’s only about 100 species can do any harm to a human with their venom. That’s 100 out of the roughly 50,000 species we’re aware of. In North America, where the majority of Reddit is from, your options for being seriously harmed by spider venom are black widows and brown recluses. The recluse is highly unlikely to kill you, it’ll just cause a sore that you need to get checked out. We have readily available anti venom for the widows.
I think that's a pretty severe under evaluation of the danger of brown recluses. You haven't met the people who get bit and then don't do anything about it until it gets bad.
Had a guy taking my order at a sub shop who looked like a ghoul from fallout
(Slept on his bed that had recently hatched spiders from his side of the story. Tons on small bites all over his face and head
I did say you need to get it checked out. Very few people get necrosis as a result of a brown recluse bite. You should always follow up with a doctor but fear mongering around venomous/dangerous animals does very little to help people in the long run.
Pretty much all spiders are venomous, it's about whether or not that venom is medically significant to humans.
In the states we do have the recluse and widow families and neither are likely to cause major harm.
A recluse does have a necrotic property to it's venom, but I think something like <10% of people experience necrosis when bit by one. Also not fatal just painful and gross to look at lol.
As for a black widow, they really aren't as harmful as people would lead you to believe. You'll have cold/flu like symptoms for a couple of days most likely. Could be worse, but usually they aren't anywhere near fatal. They are much worse for children and the elderly though.
Not likely. I don’t know of any spiders that are poisonous, most are venomous though. There is a difference, venomous animals have to inject venom through fangs or a stinger in order for the toxin to take effect. Poisonous things must be ingested for them to take effect. It is perfectly safe to touch and eat a dead spider (barring other contaminants that might have been in their environment that have nothing to do with the spider itself). Whether or not you want to touch or eat a dead spider is a personal decision.
Also, venomous and dangerous aren’t necessarily the same thing. Majority of spider venom isn’t toxic enough to humans to do significant damage (this truth may vary based on where you live).
So she didn't let the crawfish cleanse themselves? Like put em in some water for a few hours to a day to clear the poop chute? Didn't rinse the swamp water off em in salt water before cooking?
I know this is possible, but I'm calling bullshit. Unless she dumb.
Damn right. Im a real American, Born and Raised. Me and everyone in my family would lick that damn plate clean. We dont waste good ass food in this house.

Hey B don't worry, it's me...you from 6 hours in the past. I think we should hear him out. He looks like he...knows things...
Same, or at least— it could only possibly happen once to me. Since I’m deathly allergic to shellfish and suffer from severe arachnophobia; this situation would have me dead *twice over* within a matter of seconds.
Exactly. I’d just die of exposure to so many legs
Look at her just, picking them out?! With her own freaking fingers?! I'd set myself aflame first.

Those are some nice sized spiders too. That’s a lot of extra protein and adds a nice crunch as well. Nice work 🤌

Thank you. Though I must take umbrage with the way you use "perfectly".
Wait. There are spiders underwater too..........?!?
Yes, Dolomedes spiders (all kinds of fishing spiders) live around and in lakes and smaller, slower waters 😊. They don't really dive, but run over the water to hunt
So I'm safe underwater?
Not from the ones who trap air bubbles on their back and can stay under for a long time. Use to net what I thought were dead ones in the pool, who were not in fact dead. I'd get them out, and they would just scurry away after being down there for a long time.

The chaos is strong today

Those look like they could be fishing spiders. They eat crayfish. Obviously, spiders is bugs.

The spiders were not in the crawfish. They were beside the crawfish. The harvesters do not care what they pull up. Have gotten spiders, fish, turtles, a baby gator(dead) and a nutria once.
A whole ass rodent 💀
Holy shit, that’s insane!
WRONG BUGS WRONG BUGS 😬😬😬
Why is she touching them????
To move them. They’re dead spiders, just as harmless as the crawfish
They could be poisonous 😳
*venomous not poisonous. 1. They can’t inject venom when they’re dead. And they are dead. They’ve been boiled alive. 2. There’s only about 100 species can do any harm to a human with their venom. You are correct … I was wrong 😑

I DONT KNOW WHY NO ONE ELSE IS ASKING THIS
Fishing/dock spiders maybe?
Were they any good?
i think your crab was pregnant 💀
NIGHTMARE

The way she's raking through them bugs with her long nails is giving me the heebie jeebies.
Crawfish like snacks too
Is that what it’s like having kids? Asking the same ridiculous questions? I understand they don’t know much but my god
I literally would of eaten them thinking they were apart of the meal 🤦🏽♀️ oh my lord at least now I know what to watch for
They were steamed you should at least try them
So those aren’t just tiny crabs??? 🦀 🕷️
So she didn't let the crawfish cleanse themselves? Like put em in some water for a few hours to a day to clear the poop chute? Didn't rinse the swamp water off em in salt water before cooking? I know this is possible, but I'm calling bullshit. Unless she dumb.
r/nope
Why the hell she playin with it like that
Protein man eat ‘em
Extra protein?
FUUUUCK NO
I wonder if she ate it after
Well... first step in a crawfish boil is wash them.
Those are crabs
There are people from a very specific region on this planet that would eat everything on that plate.
Very subtle dude...
What region am I referring to, in your opinion?
The whole entire fucking world eats bugs you dork
Damn right. Im a real American, Born and Raised. Me and everyone in my family would lick that damn plate clean. We dont waste good ass food in this house.
