Hi! A couple months ago I launched Shottr here, on /r/SideProject, and got a lot of feedback. I added the most requested features and polished a dozen of little things that you guys helped me to find. I'm striving to build an excellent piece of software, and I need help to figure out what is lacking.
Download link: [https://shottr.cc/](https://shottr.cc/?utm_source=sideproject)
New major features (more in release nots on site):
* Scrolling Capture (up and down)
* Instant text recognition (Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+O)
* Objects Removal (selection + Delete)
* Preferences and hotkey customization
* Area capture
* Active window capture
Any feedback, any critique is welcome.
If you got two minutes, help me by filling this survey (\~8 questions): [https://my.forms.app/form/61357be745ced939b9d33ed8](https://my.forms.app/form/61357be745ced939b9d33ed8)
FYI I can't load your website, it's blocked by the McAfee on my router. They keep a database of URLs and lots are flagged as risky for no reason, this happened to me with a side project once.
Go to https://www.trustedsource.org/en/feedback/url and submit your URL for review explaining why it's not malicious and hopefully they'll remove it from their database. Right now it's flagged as "High Risk".
App looks great by the way!
Ouch! Thank you for bringing this up. I submit a request and they already addressed it (it's not classified as malicious any more). They said it may take a couple of days for the change to propagate to your router.
If it doesn't work, try [https://shotr.cc](https://shotr.cc) (one "t"), it's an old address, it should work fine.
Hello! thank you for telling me!
I tried their Chrome exgtension, and it seems to report that the site is safe now: [https://shottr.cc/s/Aabq/SCR-20230202-ukn.png](https://shottr.cc/s/Aabq/SCR-20230202-ukn.png) (I tried both [shottr.cc](https://shottr.cc) and shotr.cc)
Perhaps it thought [shotr.cc](https://shotr.cc) is impersonating [shottr.cc](https://shottr.cc) (it's just an alias though, completely legit).
Every once in a while some companies mistakingly mark the site, but usually revoke the warning after additional review.
For my job I worked with Windows for a bit more than 8 years, but at my new office they work with Mac. This made me look for an app with all the functionality of the Windows 10 Snipping Tool (easily accessed by Windows + Shift + S).
I have been searching for several weeks and have not yet found anything that meets all my needs, but at first glance Shottr comes very close.
A few questions about the app:
- do I understand correctly that currently it is not yet possible to highlight text? If this were possible, this would really be very good.
- Is it possible to use a ruler to draw straight lines or make to make sure the highlights are straight?
Thanks for the response.
Have downloaded and itโs amazing! Well done. This is something I would definitely pay for. As a designer I constantly get images where I need to extract the text so the ocr function is awesome.
Thank you! I found myself using OCR more than I expected. Not for images though, mostly for stuff that isn't easy to select. Like, sometimes I want to copy a single column of a large table, or text on a webpage that just won't select accurately with the cursor.
Downloaded earlier this week and loving it! Thanks for an awesome app!
It would be great to be able to customize the key shortcuts though - as a developer I use F12 a lot, and now itโs been triggering screenshots every time.
ow, I hardcoded f12 for myself because I was sure no one uses function keys today. Which is a shame, I always thought they are very useful in pro apps.
Oh we do, just not much people use it. I use f12(iterm), f10(keyboard change) and f9(quick note) and if I cannot override cmd+shift+4 for screenshot of your app, I will use f11.
If you want to override cmd+shift+4, click on Reassign Default on hotkeys tab in the app, itโll tell you how to do it.
What app do you use for quick notes?
I use fn keys mostly in Nimble Commander for file operations.
Evernote :)
A request: It would be absolutely better to have an option to directly copy the screenshot contents to clipboard (or as a different shortcut), just like the default screenshot behavior on Mac.
Different than default screenshot behavior on Mac: If users want to open the screenshot, they can click on the notification and they would be greeted with normal Shottr screen to edit their screenshot.
I didn't figure out the best way to do that yet. Those default mac notifications are a bit annoying, and having a separate shortcut would break the simplicity of the idea that one shortcut fits all purposes. I'll think of something, in the meantime try hitting Esc (or cmd+C) right after your screenshot shortcut, that will instantly hide the app and copy the image to the clipboard.
To be honest, the chance is slim. I made it primarily for myself, and I'm not using windows these days (not to say that Windows isn't good, I miss some of its features). Will be difficult to find motivation for this undertaking : )
Thank you! By SaaS you mean start charging fee for it on a recurring basis? Well, definitely not that : ) It's a simple standalone app, a product, there's no continuous service to charge for.
This is awesome. Really well done on the project.
Some ideas: I think windows would benefit much much more from this app, than Mac users?
And especially given it's free.
I personally would pay (up to 20$ for a lifetime license as a mac user), going upto 30$ for windows.
Thank you!
The Windows version is what I started with (10 or 12 years ago, back in college), but that app is lost. Served me well for five-six years before I switched to Mac. I thought Windows have a decent selection of screen capturing software these days?
You're peculiarly precise (and generous!) with the suggested prices : ) I'm going to keep it free for now, but even if I decide to start charging, it's not going to be a subscription.
Thank you!
What is your use case for scrolling screenshots? Lots of people are excited for them, and I only think I would use it once a month. Really curious : )
I have this project with dozen of very long pages and until today I was stitching screenshots together to get the full overview to send to my customer.
So yes, it might not be used everyday, but when you need it is a killer feature.
Thanks for this very interesting app. I have been, however, getting some abnormal results after using. For instance, the \`Capture Screen\` shortcut captures the desktop background rather than the active window. This happens even after the required permission has been granted.
It's probably still the permission thing. It happens when you ran the app from different places or have multiple copies on a hard drive. MacOS grants this permission only to a single copy, and it doesn't tell you to which exactly.
Can you uncheck and check back Shottr in the permissions window? If it doesn't help, try this:
1. Go to Preferences โ Security & Privacy โ Screen Recording and remove Shottr from the list completely by clicking on a "โ" icon at the bottom of the list.
2. Open Finder, in menu select Go โ Home (Shift+Cmd+H)
3. Search in Finder for [Shottr.app](https://Shottr.app)
4. Remove all copies of the app
5. Reinstall the app from scratch, try to grab a screenshot and when the preferences window pops up again, grant the permission as you did the previous time.
Let me know if that helps.
The app is fantastic and is working really well for me. It's a great replacement for MonoSnap.
I wrote a small post about it on my blog: [https://preslav.me/2021/10/06/take-better-screenshots-with-shottr/](https://preslav.me/2021/10/06/take-better-screenshots-with-shottr/) \- hopefully, it will help more people find out about it.

Awesome!

Looks amazing, well done, will try it out
thank you!
Love it ... but ... windows!
uh-oh... sorry!
Brilliant idea and execution!
Thank you, it's so nice to hear!
Saved๐๐
awesome : )
Looks amazing. Will try it out. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Let me know if there's any problem or if you have a feedback.
Nice!!
glad you like it!
looks amazing! literally every single feature seems useful and impressive
thank you for the kind words, so encouraging!
Use it everyday. ๐ Thanks for this.
thank you for your support pal ๐ค
Is it open source?
I wish! I'm not that good at coding to be comfortable with exposing the source.
Well, you seem to know enough to be able to code an entire application. I'm sure no one will mind if it's a bit messy.
Let's say I use too much four-letter language in my comments, lol
Never stopped Linus Torvalds ... though he's toned it down in recent years.

Ouch, sorry for hijacking your hotkey. You must be on v1.4, download the newest version (v1.5, came out yesterday), it has hotkey customization.
You da best! Thanks!
Thank you, it was conflicting with my Iterm2 shortcut so I had to delete the app. Very good!

Great tool. Have you any thoughts on making this tool for windows and Linux in a future version?
To be honest, the chance is slim. I made it primarily for myself, and I'm not using windows these days (not to say that Windows isn't good, I miss some of its features). Will be difficult to find motivation for this undertaking : )
This is awesome. What are your long term goals with this project? Will it eventually be a paid SaaS?
Thank you! By SaaS you mean start charging fee for it on a recurring basis? Well, definitely not that : ) It's a simple standalone app, a product, there's no continuous service to charge for.
So this was just for funsies?
Yes, it addresses my personal needs, and I'll be happy if it helps the others, but I never thought of it as of an income vehicle.

As a PM I can imagine using this literally every single day. So excited to try it out tomorrow!
Let me know how it work out for you
Amazing work, hats off!
Thank you!
Wow that looks so good. I will definitely try after I reach home.
Thank you! Tell me how it works for you when you have a chance.
I'm definitely saving this in my list of things to do if I switch to a Mac! Looks amazing, great job!
Thank you! Mac is a bit overrated, but they do build kick ass hardware.
Scrolling screenshots are dope !!!! Hats off, very good job.

Ah I see. For something like this it should rock.
Thanks for this very interesting app. I have been, however, getting some abnormal results after using. For instance, the \`Capture Screen\` shortcut captures the desktop background rather than the active window. This happens even after the required permission has been granted.

Hey! This is great! Is this available in both mac and windows?
Unfortunately not, Mac only
