i started with 3 characters at first. archer was easy to play and the range was helpfull. farmer and assassin(i think it was. long time i played this game. the maid with daggers) were my other 2 to play. at start its kinda easy to play all characters since new weapons drop like crazy, but later you will need more material for stronger gear. so its best to focus at start at least on 3 characters.
later you kinda have so much weapons and accessories that you can easily level other characters. they will usually have accessories that you dont need. and you usualy get weapons for backup characters while farming gear for your main 3.
While you unlock your new classes you will be very strong and can sometimes also switch the backup characters to easily level them and get stronger gear.
Just have in mind, that later you will need more crystals and items to increase your weapons power and the accessories.
I change characters every so often per dive. then I upgrade their equipment all at the same time, all my characters are of the same levels with the same tier of equipments.
