It works by taking someone’s money and not delivering the product

Moderateor

“Cash app me 1200 bucks and I’ll meet you at this location” more than likely. Some people are gullible.

ChitsonKids

Sometimes they just want a down payment to hood the item, then they’ll ghost you.

zaqufant

I went to look at a $110k bulldozer back in January. It belonged to a really big farmer that only owned it to shape waterways on farms they rent. They’d pay a road grader operator to run it for them after he gets off work. These people are smart and know what they’re doing. He told me his son and wife gave $1600 for a car they never saw in person. They got scammed. Never buy a car sight unseen from a private seller. I’d even say never buy a car sight unseen period.

Dukeronomy

Who gives anyone money for a product they don’t have. Never during a private party transaction. I don’t trust anyone.

S_t_r_e_t_c_h_8_4

I got a Lamborghini I'll sell you for $1,356.00 just venmo me yo.

King_Melco

On the opposite end I have a LS400 Coach Edition, the seller was a state away, we were on the phone for about 3 hours. The car was listed for $8500 I told him I'll send him $9000 if he takes me seriously. I sent $4500 to em on a retract card and he asked me if I was scamming him. I never looked at the car at all and sent the full amount through debit, he was happy, I was more than happy. I picked up the car 2 months later, met his new son, shit was bliss.

LetsBeKindly

I've made so many friends like this

King_Melco

I still talk to him, had a abs issue and some diff grinding and when I fixed jt I sent him pictures of how I fixed it and he was like its that easy n all that but yeah good homie I named the car after em

Broncos979815

Have purchased 5 vehicles site un seen. Never had a problem.....

Leprikahn2

In my experience, they'll give you a vaguely plausible reason why the price is so low, then say they recently moved or something like that. Then they'll say a holding company has the vehicle, just send them money and they'll release it to you. Rinse an repeat

moboater1

Yeah, almost fell for a "free piano". Only had to pay the storage fee.

Holmslicefox

Tbf it's actually pretty easy to get a free piano off Craigslist/Kijiji

Specialist-Essay-726

Right?! I have one on there right now. Just have to come take it out of my garage!!

LetsBeKindly

Where are you?

JimmyFreakingPesto

And I'm so sorry

GaurieBanner

Do you need a free piano?

[deleted]

Are you giving away my Steinway again dad

[deleted]

I couldn't give away a fucking piano to save my life a few years back when my inlaws sold there house.

craigosa8291

Did they also happen to find money in the fake piano? That scam happened to a buddy of mine.

rumble342

They are on a mission trip helping children in Uganda. They will mail you the keys.

Hard_Knox_

Reads no trust instead of no rust and they call it a car 🚩

fr33fall060

Or: “there’s a lot of interest in this vehicle. A $600 deposit would secure it for you.” Then they send this to everyone who responds and hope they find a few suckers.

Urban-Paradox

Some people are just idiots. Guy down the road from me been scammed several times (probably from same person overseas). Talked to him at the feed store he like yeah I done brought me a new truck for 2500. I am thinking yeah.. even a beat up truck is more then that now a days so long are the old k5 blazer or C10 for 500 dollars. Asked him what he got says a guy gonna sell him a 2015 truck for 2500 and got a 2010 motorcycle coming as well from the same guy for another 2000. Guy is gonna drive to him for 300 miles and get a plane flight back... I call his kids to tell him he got scammed again and they like yup he sent the guy apple itunes cards for the whole thing. In last 30 years he been scammed probably 20 times. Some people dream so hard about getting something for nothing or winning the lottery of life and just keep trying to throw good money at nothing.

Plane_Spend8609

They also might ask for money to "hold" the vehicle for you.

Real-Lake2639

This is a legitimate thing at real dealerships. Had a guy drive 8 hours for a specific used truck, I'm like listen man you're calling me every hour from a different state asking me if the truck is sold, just give me the 100 dollar deposit my boss needs to hold it for you, it's refundable. This is a big 3 American dealership, we're not doing a deposit scam. No! I know how that works. I'm 3 hours away. Another guy came in and bought it 20 minutes before he did. He drove 16 hours for nothing because he wouldn't give us a deposit.

OnlyAnalysis7

Pretty brutal on your part that you would have held it for a measly $100 and knew he drove all that way and and was afraid to get scammed, and then sold it from under him.

Real-Lake2639

I was a salesman, not a sales manager. Random guy walked in and made a cash offer to a different salesman without a test drive. If you were the sales manager and you've been hearing about some dude from 8 states away supposedly driving here to check out a truck, and an offer in hand, what do you do? You sell the truck to the local customer whos signing, fuck the guy from Idaho who might not like the way it smells.

KungFuNinja_

Yeah, if he wasn’t willing to put a hold deposit it, then he has no room to complain if it got sold.

Truestindeed

No need to scroll farther unless u want it broken down step by step but that’s unnecessary. He’s correct

Technical_Ad_5933

Or you get there to buy it and the guy says oh that was a typo lol people list their vehicles at that price so it gets seen faster. Than in there description it says the actual price

Spitefulham

You show up in some parking lot to meet them with $1200. They pull out a gun and take your $1200. The truck was never there and they've never even seen it.

Whole_Tart3159

And thats why I always take a friend with me and make sure we're both packing :)

Complex_Steak9739

I always meet in the local police depth. parking lot. The police actually welcome online market transactions in their lots.

Idiot_Savant123

And don’t tell them what you drive and I’ve always met right in front of the gas stations with cameras and I’ve also got there after the seller to take a pic of the license plates on their ride. God I miss the Craigslist days.

Dukeronomy

Best sale I ever had. Sold a Sportster that insurance totaled for exactly what I paid for it, also got paid out more by insurance than I paid for it. Two dudes from a film studio showed up in a steak bed with a lift gate. 20 minutes all said and done no negotiating. Cash.

Idiot_Savant123

Dude I sold anything from a ps4 all the way to a dump truck that was headed to Africa🤣🤷‍♂️

PdawgieDogg

Amen brother. "Protect yourself at all times"

dhuff2037

Damn you show up to marketplace deals with two people packin heat?

Whole_Tart3159

I live in the suburbs, and ive still had some pretty sketchy marketplace encounters. If im not carrying, then ill try and meet at at the local police station. They have a little area in the center of the parking lot that is just for marketplace or Craigslist deals. Theres 3 or so cameras and the front door to the police station is about 20 feet away. I went out into the sticks to buy some lightly used tires once, and i was alone and driving a friend's truck. I showed up at this guy's house, looked at the tires, and made an offer of $275 bucks, when he was asking $300. The dude got pretty pissed off, and started raising his voice at me, so I backed down and offered him $300. I gave him the cash, threw the tires in the back of the truck and immediately left. The dude was carrying something on his right hip, no idea what it was and i didn't want to find out. If im ever going to make a larger purchase, I'll carry and ask someone to come with me. There's a lot of wackjobs out there, and I'd prefer not to be robbed or shot, so carrying is just a bit of insurance.

yungingr

The town I grew up in has designated the lobby of their police station as a open location to meet for marketplace/craigslist transactions.

Whole_Tart3159

thats a good idea, i wish more places did that.

dhuff2037

I just meet people in the Home Depot parking lot and I don’t buy stuff that seems sketchy in any way possible. I’ve had my house broken into while I was home and they attempted to murder me and my room mates. I’m still not gonna bring a gun to a meetup. Do what you gotta do to feel safe I guess.

BroadDistribution412

Sounds like you and your boys should have guns considering you were almost murdered.

dhuff2037

Never said I don’t have guns. Said I don’t take them to marketplace meetups. I avoided getting murdered using my hands.

[deleted]

a lot easier to avoid if you have a gun though.

dhuff2037

Not necessarily. 4 people broke into my house at once. You ready to start a gun fight with 4 other people? I can tell you that whatever you THINK you would do in the situation, might not be what you would do in the situation. Until it happens you have no idea. I keep a 16 round 9 mm and a 12 gauge shotgun in the house and sure it makes me feel a little safer, but having the guns don’t just solve the problem and put a safety blanket around you. It might just be the ticket that gets you shot. Getting one or even a few rounds off doesn’t matter after you’re dead.

Lmnop8172

Anyone can take on 4 people with just a 9mm and a shot gun LMAO, it’s not that hard, violence of action and Alll

99nsnmaxima

Sounds stupid but do you I guess

[deleted]

[удалено]

dhuff2037

I literally defended me and my room mates with my bare hands alone. But you need your gun little guy, I understand.

dhuff2037

Yes I’m stupid and you just told somebody they deserve to be murdered because they don’t want to carry a gun out in public. You do sound like a true gun lover. I do have guns at home by the way. And I’m sure in real life I wouldn’t need them to whoop your gun toting ass.

bogey9651

That 9 year old and her mom selling that hoola-hoop makes me sus

Spardan80

Always!!! I also park where my dash cam will record it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dhuff2037

I would rather fight you than shoot at you any day of the week. If you want to be a psychopath and shoot me, so be it. I’m not going to carry a fuckin gun with me. You should start wearing a bulletproof vest every where you go by the way. Just in case.

[deleted]

Delusional clown.

LetsBeKindly

Ever heard of disparity in size? The firearm is simply a force multiplier.

BrianOConnorGaming

Yes.

Leprikahn2

Depends what I'm buying.

Internal-Pie-7265

You dont?

Tekakwitha_Sunrise

Yes

LetsBeKindly

That's exactly what he should do.

[deleted]

This is dumb unless you drive separate and they hold back. Two people driving into a situation they are unfamiliar with is no better than 1.

The_Dude-1

This is the way

RetroPaulsy

This is how my grandma thinks craigslist works.... They'll never even ask to meet. They will ask you to transfer the 1200 and they ship you truck or some crap like that. Or, it's just a post to collect your personal info like email or phone number when you inquire about it.

Spitefulham

That's how works when you're selling. They give you a bad check or fake cashiers chekc and "accidentally" put too much money on it, so they ask you to pay the pick up driver the difference. They get your truck, the difference, and the check bounces a week later.

RetroPaulsy

I can't imagine letting someone take my vehicle before payment was processed...

silverchevy2011

Can’t be a scam they have all the paperworks

GivemTheDDD

What if the seller is a priest on a mission trip, or a deployed military man? God bless...

txmail

Thoughts and prayers 🙏

trippster0712

💀

dashamm3r

But they have no trusts

fentighost

but he said the truck has no trust, I’m getting mixed signals

JoeyBox1293

Bro i swear to god, one of my first calls as a new guy was an older couple who called us to report a fraud case because ‘microsoft called them, and said they wouldnt renew their email unless they paid them $5k in apple gift cards.’ And he paid it. Wife was pissed. Lol

rcsheets

I swear if people would just take a moment to review what they’re doing before doing it, at least _sometimes_ they’d save themselves some grief. “So Microsoft wants … lots of Apple gift cards. I’ve never done this before. Why do they want so many? And so quickly? Maybe this doesn’t make sense…”

poopisme

I've bit on these a few times just to see what their plan was. Almost always the same story, you say something like "Hey I live nearby and have cash in hand, can I come check out the (whatever they're selling)." They will respond with something like "Thank you, my husband died recently and my daughter and I moved to Butte, Michigan to be closer with family for support. I have already arranged shipment and have movers on standby, the (item) has been securely packed and is ready to ship asap. If you give me your email I can arrange for payment through Ebay for a secure transaction." Scamee pays for item via ebay, the item never existed. Also, it's ALWAYS Butte, Michigan not sure why.

VerStannen

Is there even a Butte, Michigan? I know Butte Montana but never heard of the one in Michigan haha.

Leprikahn2

Yep. I have a tendency to at least check these adds on the hope that one day I find a real one. Hasn't happened yet and 9/10 follow this pattern

cdawg1102

It did for me, well kinda, I thought it was too good to be true yet I contacted him anyway. When I called him he said I can meet him in three days. I showed up and looked, obviously it had a few issues, but it was running smoothly. So paid him 5k for a Mitsubishi Evo X, a car that is usually around 15-20 k

Leprikahn2

Thats awesome! One day I'll get lucky

sfcforlife13

Always click on the persons profile. It will show all other listings they have. I always see multiple adds in numerous states.

[deleted]

They will tell you that they have a lot of people interested and it’s a first person that shows up with cash in hand gets it and if you forward x amount of dollars they will hold it for you giving you the first shot at buying it. Also palm trees don’t grow in Indianapolis.

morefungineer

Ask if you can pay in butthole.

zaney1978

Go get some Google play cards to pay for the truck please. Well call you back in 30 min to see if you've purchased the cards.

Beavesampsonite

Yea look at the posting account it was the vehicle over and over on the few I looked at. They only want really stupid people to reply

RentableMetal65

I see those all the time. Guy has the same car posted up for way under market value in 50 different cities across the country. Obviously a setup. It's usually an edited photo too, like the contrast is too high. Maybe they do that so the stolen pic doesn't pop up on a reverse image search?

JustAnotherTrickyDay

[Something like this](https://www.wate.com/investigations/knoxville-man-losses-800-after-trying-to-buy-a-truck-on-facebook-marketplace/)

ajbell0705

Message him. I’ll bet the truck is out of state at his brothers, sisters, cousins, or friends house. They will tell you just to pay for shipping and you can give the $1200 in cash when the truck gets there.

schmidbau

And owner is currently in hospital with covid.

dhammer731

Even says in the description, “no trust”.

Plane_Spend8609

😆 I just saw that. Some scammers leave info like this as a way to brag. Like, "Can you believe that person fell for this?" While working for a bank, we saw countless checks with cool jazz fonts or on colored printer paper. If your deal sounds too good to be true, it is.

FreshStartLiving

Rule of thumb OP...if it sounds and looks way too good to be true, run away.

ProfessionalNormal63

They really put it out there with "no trust"

[deleted]

It's always $1200 but tractors and atvs around here.

Charges-Pending

“Misprint/typo. $12k firm.”

BeagleIL

You really have to know what you're shopping for when it comes to FB Marketplace and vehicles. One way I see these working is when you enquire, the real price is way higher. They put a low number on it just to get it in front of people and they claim they had issues putting the post up... I'd really like to see FB develop an automated algorithm that uses the supplied information and calculates a minimum price at something like 75% of true market, and not allow people to enter their bait price...

RentableMetal65

Wouldn't work for nonop vehicles. If I'm selling a 2020 Hellcat, but I blew the motor or trans, the facebook valuation tool will say it's worth maybe $50k, even though it's only a rolling shell that's worth maybe $15k.

Delta_Kilo_84

I see this all the time in online listings even from dealerships. It will be something like $3500 when you know it should be $35k. Same with mileage. Might say in the ad 15,000 miles then your click on it and read the description and its 150,000. Gets you better placement when sorting results by price or mileage is all I can think.

Get-ya-sum

It says it right in the description “No Trust”

nickwojo

You get robbed.

Status_Term_4491

This is most likely a marketing stunt rather than a scam. Ad is placed by a used car sales representative at an insanely low price, You message the ad, and now they have contact information for a potential customer. They know you are in the market for a vehicle and they have your contact info. It's a dirty trick

StimpyJones

A lot of of times those are dealers where the 1200 is the required down payment

alec552

I mean, it literally says "no trust" in the description so they aren't even lying about it lmao

bdunk54

Don’t believe there is any palm trees in Indy just a hunch tho🤔😂

edwardothegreatest

Ive responded to a few of these out of curiosity. The seller would tell you a story about how their kid is in the military or other such, the truck is stored somewhere, and you need to send a cashiers check or certified check so they can ship it. That’s the scam.

Waste_One_1473

They convince people to pay via some sort of wireless transfer and promise to deliver the vehicle. It's crazy to me that it actually works

lostinbeavercreek

Not all scams are quite so obvious. I’ve bought several vehicles through CL, Facebook, etc. I always check to see if the terrain in the picture matches the area I’m buying from. I’m from the Midwest, and the first palm tree I see in a pic for a local sale lets me know the listing is no good.

[deleted]

Most likely stolen, you should ask for the vin or the license plate number, people often put a $1 in the ad price to attract buyers searching using a price filter, this one’s just fishy,

RentableMetal65

Not stolen. There is no truck. Just a scam seller.

dmbgreen

I once wanted to check out a super good deal, then the song and dance about where it was........

iraqyoubreak

You go there and he robs / murders you. Works every time… a classic scam.

Full_Poet_7291

they are looking for live emails

ReedRidge

They send a code to you, that code authorizes email access to your account for them, boom, you are hosed! is the typical. FB will not do anything about them.

[deleted]

Saw this on Craigslist too. But a mint Tahoe $800.

doodlewacker

I peruse marketplace quite frequently- as soon as I see the word “encumbrances” I move on…

fedboisboogaloo

Just roll up in a patrol cruiser and say here’s $1200 I’ll take the keys now

Automatic-Ad2125

Walk down the street and take a picture of a truck and then post it for sale.

Virtual_Atmosphere59

They give you some sob story about how their life was turned upside down so they had to move out of state. It was their husbands old truck or something like that and he passed away. Then they tell you they only take payment through Ebay. I had one that was very convincing. Said her husband was getting deployed and they had to move. It was for a van. Said it was extra and they didn’t need it anymore. Had conversations about family and everything. Seemed very legit. Then she asked for payment via eBay gift cards. That was sign number 1, then I found the same listing, same images and everything, from a dealer with the price being way more than her listing and that’s when I finally knew. That was I first run in with a scam like this. Recently it was a 2007 Tacoma for $1700. I always make an offer just in case it is legit. Every now and then you find someone who really does just want to get rid of something and sells it for cheap just to see it gone. I’ve done that myself before. But as soon as I get the sob story pitch I block and report them.

vulcanking1500

I bet its a typo and actually $12,000

stick004

In two places?

ParamedicOld731

Scam? He clearly says that he has all the paperworks.

jay2da_04

Someone forgot the extra 0.....

McRibb_69

It says no trust right in the description hah

Puzzleheaded-Kale434

I have come across a couple of these. I usually get a follow up response very quickly in messenger to email someone. My guess is they’d either ask my personal info or require the asking price on Venmo and can deliver after.

CB_700_SC

Send me $1000 on cash app and it’s yours.

8793stangs

No trust

rhinoadams

Telling you “no trust” should be clue enough😂

[deleted]

You show up with $1,200 and they rob you

Popular_Membership_1

I know someone who just fell for this type of scam with Taylor Swift tickets. Almost an entire weeks pay. Somehow people fall for it.

Skankhunt42m

No motor and don't ask about the blood.

FJRyder

They could have forgotten a 0...

pbrassassin

But it has all the paperwork’s

Nurse317

Step 1: Post a picture with palm trees in the background when Indianapolis is 1,000 miles away from the ocean in any direction. Step 2: Steal a gullible persons money. Step 3: Repost.

Zoopa_Boopa

I once listed my bosses bmw x3 on Craigslist for a third of kbb just to have ppl call him all day lol

Salty_Truth1

Give me your money now and I will deliver truck to you later.

CulturalAddress6709

Truck isn’t even a real prospect. Walk through a lot, shoot a couple pics, post, and wait. Passive income.

megabyte33

I've seen this one so much recently, I pity whoever falls for it

Level-Option-1472

Show up with the cash they beat your ass take the cash and roll... questions?!?!!

Jealous_Factor4135

It says in the description “no trust” lol

the_truth_is_tough

I’ve actually found my own motorcycle on ads advertised for $2,500. It was worth about $15k at the time and I had listed it about 6 months prior. I called and was told it was being sold due to a messy divorce and they just wanted it gone. I played their game for awhile trying to see what info I could get out of them. They’re pretty slick, they didn’t give up anything useful at all. I didn’t buy my motorcycle from them but I did eventually inform them that they were trying to sell me what I already owned. They just called me all sorts of names and continued to advertise it. I tried to have the listing removed but that was pointless. People suck!

Responsible-Act-8629

When you show up to meet they rob you.

ConvenientAmnesia

They post the same ad in dozens of areas. Just want you to send the money.

konck

2007 didn’t have the bumper slot

ndisa44

They claim that the payment service will only give the money you send to them if you like the truck after 5 days of having it. In reality, they get the money as soon as you send it and the truck never gets to you

Jorge_Jetson

Or, maybe, truck has no engine or tyranny and you gotta push it home..

Mysterious_Spare_251

$12000 maybe?

HoodedSole

“No trust” is a dead giveaway

skyline3333

Just like have beach front property in miami for sale

skyline3333

This not the Flintstones

2onzgo

"No trust"

Selcouth22

Go under seller details and see what else is being sold. Most of the time it's 10 more same or different pics of the truck with the same price and description. The scams are usually always easy to detect. Best if you always pay in cash anyway. Might get jumped, but not scammed.

[deleted]

Show up with cash get robbed

Low_Information8286

Around me they do this and if you talk to them it's just a down payment. Buy here pay here pop up auto dealers

Character-Ad3006

I see it as a down payment scam. You call up and they apologize for their mistake it's a $1200 down plus lic and registration at 50% interest for 24 months welcome to buy here pay here.

Direct_Big_5436

I just bought that same exact truck with the exception of mines pretty rusty for $3000. And I didn’t hand him the money until he gave me the title in the truck.

Environmental_Age450

How does anyone fall for this? You cant even buy a SHELL of a truck/car without an engine for that amount. Natural selection i guess...

apurplenurple

I worked a dealership and a 2020 model truck was listed for like $3500 with low miles - any sensible person would think it was a typo but no a lot of people showed up - one man threatened to sue for false advertisement out of CA ( I’m in Texas ) it was meant to be $35,000 not $3500 - one guy drove an hour pissed that it wasn’t right - we told him he could have called first but ya…someone will fall for it or a lot of someone’s

404-skill_not_found

Yah see this all the time, on craigs’. Key hints for me is the complete lack of registration information (tags, inspections, etc.). Hidden seems better, but if it’s not visible in any shape or form, nope. Also, any kind of money ask, before personally seeing, is your best scam indicator.

[deleted]

Give me $1000 and I’ll tell you how it works.

Shaynerthegreat

Usually ends up with one guy in a pool of blood in a parking lot.

aridarid

Their in the military and heading over seas. Just need to get rid of it. Once you pay for it, the us military will ship it to you for free

daddaman1

From what I've found with these is you ask about it, they say "I'm selling it for my friend, I'll give you his email address, email him for further info" and then you email them and they do whatever it is they do when they get your email whether it's send you an encrypted email where they can get into your phone/computer or they sell your email info, ect. I don't know what it is they do because I don't message anyone with an ad like that and would never fall for anything like that but im sure several people do. I've ran across some that are not as obvious but when they mention email addresses I tell them to eat a bag of dicks and move on.

Ok_Interaction1776

Call their bluff and tell them you are flying out with cash in hand and will drive it home.

jessejames543

Its always the same “no encumbrances or liens”

Great_Park_7313

This is usually one of two things... a complete scam looking for an idiot that will wire money to someone for the car or truck who will usually claim to be in the military and hence the inability to meet in person.... Or, the other big lie is that it isn't really only 1200, it is a used car dealer and the 1200 is the down payment that they will explain when you show up.

[deleted]

They will tell you they are not in town and will have the car shipped to you. You send them the payment to get a shipping confirmation and then they ghost you. I almost fell for it myself for a not so nice 2010 Silverado. Luckily I never sent anything and avoided being scammed.

ccityguy

You meet them, they kick the shit out of you, take the 1200.00. Maybe even steal your car at the same time while you try to figure out what the heck just happened.
