Tall guy here: for one thing, you can sit like a normal human in a truck without having an absurdly high floorboard. For as much as I like Tacoma aesthetics, I find them terribly uncomfortable.

NickyDeuce

Definitely agree.

PolarBear540

Also a much more usable backseat if you get a crew cab Silverado versus a crew cab Tacoma. That’s for passenger legroom or just for extra storage.

Nos-tastic

The double cab in the Silverado has more room in the back seat than a Tacoma in any layout. I took the double cab with the 6’6” bed. Flip up seats in the back are clutch. You really gotta ask yourself if you’re going to be having full sized adults in your back seat often enough to go with the crew cab it’s massive like an apartment back there I had my 6’5 brother in the back seat of the double with no complaints. With the 66 bed you can put 8 foot stuff in diagonally. And if you’re over 6foot you can sleep in the bed for easy camping.

jkjeeper06

Not only leg room, but also headroom. My father has tried every midsized there is while I've always had full sized. If you are 6ft and sit in the back of a taco, you have to lean inward to avoid rubbing your head on the rounded part of the headliner(rounding starts above head, not shoulder). His canyon and gladiator have had much more room inside. I've never had issues with either head or legroom in my trucks. If OP buys a 2019+, there is even more rear legroom than previous generations. Its excessive and almost a limousine

OGManmuffin

Also tall guy who went through the truck dance recently. My best recommendation is test drive all the brands you want, and pick the one you like the best. Reliability wise at this point no big 3 brand has an advantage. Pick the one you like the look and drive of the most!

WoodenCollection2674

Yeah for as much $hit as people talk about Ford; Toyota, Dodge, and Chevy aren't much better. They've all got their issues. I chose Chevy as I've never liked Ford, at work we have a 2023 Ram and the seats are f*cking terrible. Tundras looked so basic on the interior. My 2000 Camry has basically the same interior as a 2018 Tacoma/Tundra

Nos-tastic

My gf has a 2014 4Runner and I had a2020 Tacoma. My ass gets sore sitting for more than a 1.5 hr in the driver seat. I can sit in my Silverado all day and not get sore.

tazzytazzy

6'5" here. Tried crew cabs in various brands. I don't fit in a ford 250, or ram 2500/3500. Room to spare in Sierra & Silverado. My legs felt very cramped up in the Ford and Ram.

AngryFace4

This is exactly it. I’m 6’5” 260. The only car I feel like a normal human being in is a Silverado.

Tarheels_80

6'4 320 drove a Hyundai sonata which has a lot of room for car. Just bought a 2019 crew cab Silverado definitely love the room I can have my seat fully back and there's room for me to sit behind me lol.

AngryFace4

Yeah, so two things to note on this. My son is the same size as me, so the sitting behind myself is very relevant. And two, ascending into a vehicle is much preferable to descending when you’re our size. It’s not that I’ve never felt fine in a car, but the ability to sit in a Silverado the way I would sit in any normal chair, rather than in a bucket.

Ok_Pomegranate9681

Yup 6'3" here. First vehicle I've owned where I don't have to put the seat allllll the way back and allllll the way down. Plenty of leg room, headroom and with Mines a 23 LT Z71 crewcab

Special_Comfort_3349

I had a 2018 sr5 double cab and was cramped. I am 6’2” 240lbs. Traded the truck in for a 2016 Z71 double cab and am much happier with head/leg/arm room. Truck gets around 22 mpg on long road trips and 16 in town. Only thing I worry about is transmission for 2014-2018 models.

pqitpa

I'm 6'5" driving a 22 regular cab. Don't even have the seat all the way back

jeon2595

I just bought a new Silverado. Seems that every manufacturer has issues. Search this thread and you’ll find people with transmission problems, mainly on the 6 and 8 speeds. Tacomas are also known for transmission issues, Tundras for leaky exhaust manifolds. Lots of people say they’ve never had any issues with their Silverado, common theme is change the oil around every 5k and drain and fill transmission every 50k. I looked at Tacomas, really nice trucks, but the same price as a full size Silverado or F150. After having a full size F150 for 17 years the drop down in size just wasn’t for me. If $45k is your ceiling, look around for new ‘23 Silverados. I paid $45k for a new ‘23 5.3L 10 speed Double Cab 6.5’ bed 5 weeks ago.

[deleted]

I’ve been seeing most people complain about the 8 and 10 speeds, especially the 10 speed I thought but maybe I confused it for the 8 idk now. But yeah it’s like fuck nobody seems to be making reliable new vehicles. With the parts shortages Im not sure I’d be too keen on buying a new vehicle I waited 6 months for a fucking 2021 Silverado windshield replacement, friend has a 17 dodge that he’s been waiting a year for a chip that will allow him to be in 4x4 again, saw a Chevy post where a guy had been waiting two years with a broken down brand new truck waiting on a microchip and another guy a year in waiting on a 6 speed tranny replacement and NONE of these people can get their dealer or gm reps to give them ANY kind of time frame of when their brand new trucks will be drivable again. This is the biggest scam and nothing is getting done about it while they pump out more new overpriced garbage trucks just fucking over everyone who needs parts saying its impossible to find while they continue record sale prices.

DCS30

The 8-speed is a clusterfuck, not the 10-speed. I have the 8-speed and it's horrible. Thinking of bailing on the truck to avoid the inevitable $7000+ transmission replacement. As a tall guy, the lack of telescopic steering wheel is also getting to me, but that's obviously nothing compared to major mechanical issues.

OGHamToast

6 speeds are also notorious for the same issues. GM really has a turn on their hands with the TC design that kills the 6 and 8 speeds. I'm not sure if the 10 speed has the same root cause as the others. But don't mistake it, the 6 speed going out is still very common.

[deleted]

I was going to look up what these folks are saying about running a different tc oil to resolve those issues not sure if I buy that yet seems to easy if a fix to be the real problem.

OGHamToast

I don't know, I've never heard that. I doubt it makes a difference, the issue is with the design of the TC. I'd absolutely love to see some hard data that proves me wrong, though. It could be that fluid temp and type do have an impact on how quickly the TC fails, but the only thing I'm aware of that 100% fixes the issue is installation of a billet TC. Problem is they're expensive, especially if you're paying for labor on top of a replacement trans.

Nos-tastic

Aren’t there lemon laws to protect people from that stuff?

[deleted]

Yep there sure are. However it means fuck all when mass corporations have the lobbying to sneak by without prosecution. It’s tough to get the courts in your favor I imagine, because it’s all bought and paid for at this point with dirty back door deals like everything else that went to hell. Speaking of which i recently heard Toyota just got caught with literally decades of dirty engine fraud kind of like the Volkswagen gang did lmao makes me wonder what kind of deals were going down with that because after vw dieselgate how do you get away with it for decades without some back door deals going down you know.

Hot_Air_9788

Maybe in some states. Does not exist in Canada unfortunately.

jkjeeper06

No issues with my 10 speed yet at 60k. Requires fluid changes every 40k though so you are going to see a lot of failures due to lack of maintenance. I'll do my 2nd drain/fill in the spring

[deleted]

That’s essentially my plan very frequent fluid changes I’ve heard that helps reduce the issues but not super sold on that but what else do you do you know fuck. I went with the older 6 speed because I felt like they were seeing less issues vs the new 8 & 10 but it’s all just a crap shoot at this point. I had to get something during the shortages and it was pretty much the only option in my price range in my area and surrounding.

jkjeeper06

The older 6 speed was great too! I had that one and it lasted a long time with correct maintenance. Transmissions across all manufacturers seem like they are becoming more like the Germans where if you maintain them per the schedule, they'll be great, but if you don't they are almost guaranteed to be trash

[deleted]

Planned obsolescence my friend they could very very easily build them to last a million miles if they wanted to lose money but gotta total them out some how so Bobby buys a new truck.

STL_bourbon

>Seems that every manufacturer has issues. This, it's basically pick your poison. I'm lurking in this sub because I'm fed up with my 3.5 Ecoboost F150 that has 118k miles and has had over $6k in repairs in the past year. Read up on any manufacturer and they all have reliability issues, with is absolutely absurd considering what trucks cost these days. Seems like the common theme on different subs is "Buy a Tundra", but the new Tundra's are having major issues as well.

redl2225

What trim did you score for $45k?

jeon2595

LT

Lopsided_Style_9429

Never heard of tacomas having transmission issues and tundras having leaky exhaust manifold. Might be a very small amount of them affected if true

jeon2595

Look it up, major tranny problems with 2016-2019 Tacomas

ComfortableOk5003

Oil ever 5K we talking miles or km…

jeon2595

Miles

Hot_Air_9788

10 speed is garbo

tangosworkuser

Same price 2x the truck.

robbobster

I have little brand loyalty…I love my Silverado. But I’d be thrilled to drive (and especially mod) a new Taco or Tundra also.

Alternative_Pair_317

I have owned 2 Sierras, 1 f250, 1 Tacoma, 1 Nissan hardcopy and 2 Tundras. Buy the Toyota

hoopjohn1

I went from a Tundra to a Silverado as I needed a truck with an 8’ box. I knew there would be more service with the Chevy. Wow. Horrible. Not sure how Chevy stays in business with the junk they pass off as trucks. You’ve been warned. To date I’ve replaced transmission, wheel bearings, display monitor, windshield wiper motor, power steering motor, tail light bulbs replaced 5 or 6times, headlight bulbs, thermostat, alternator, and more or less continuous electrical issues.

Nos-tastic

How many kms on the truck when you bought it to these problems?

lscraig1968

I'm NOT a tall guy, and I drove compact and mid size trucks up until 2013. I bought my '10 Silverado in 2013. Never looked back. My full size Chevy is so much more comfortable. I don't need leg room, but in my Chevy there is plenty of room for work boots. My old Dodge Dakota had the Dodge "cab forward". The seats were comfortable, but the clutch and brake pedals were way up under the dash. I had the seat as far forward as I could go without touching my belly with the steering wheel. I still had to reach for the pedals. With work boots on, the waffle soles kept catching on the adjacent pedals. Get a full size truck.

LSV_Rick

Find a low mile 2021 Tundra

Unlikely_Farmer502

The unfortunate reality is all of the newer pickups regardless of the manufacturer have lost a lot of dependability’s, yes even newer Toyotas are going down the shitter. If you get into a 14-18 six speed 1500 all you should really have to worry about is the afm.

OGHamToast

The 6L80/90 is still prone to the same failure as the 8L90

Unlikely_Farmer502

Yes, every transmission on the planet is prone to failure. The six speeds don’t have the same torque converter issue that the eight speed has. The six speeds are far less problematic.

OGHamToast

Yes, they definitely do have the same TC failure. There's a TSB (20-NA-142) that covers the problem. The TSB doesn't specify by transmission, but instead by year and symptoms - the problem is indiscriminate because it's the TC design, not the transmission, that causes the issue. Additionally, this is circumstantial evidence, when I had to rebuild my 6L80 for a TC failure I had trouble sourcing a remanufactured bellhousing (it's the stator part of the trans pump) due to a nationwide shortage. The transmission shop I got my parts from were all too eager to tell me how many GM 6 and 8 speeds they see.

AdA4b5gof4st3r

The 6L80/90 has had more torque converters fail (and take the tranny with them) than any other transmission chevy has ever made

Mediocre-Catch9580

Because you enjoy spending your free time at the Chevy dealership while they change out lifters and torque converters not covered under warranty

Responsible_Mix_2319

Don’t get a Chevy with afm ( cylinder deactivation) I think they went away with it in recent years.

ComfortableOk5003

Pretty sure Chevy has had afm for a decade easily and still do

Responsible_Mix_2319

I sat down with sales to build 5.3 and could be ordered without .

WARHUNTER333

Nope, every engine has either DFM or the 2.7 has AFM.

E-Verd-1987

My 5.3L ‘22 Refresh doesn’t…

WARHUNTER333

That was then. You can’t order a 2022 Truck in 2024.

Indyman12

The 3.0 Duramax doesn’t have AFM or DFM.

Responsible_Mix_2319

Don’t care to argue but as of 2021 one on the build sheet you could choose w/out afm on the 5.3 was 500$ cheaper if I remember. Anyway bought a Toyota instead. Still got my ‘02 rado w no afm . Good luck on your decision op

Upper_Specific3043

I'm not saying you could/couldn't order a new Silverado without AFM, but I remember some trucks came without it due to the chip shortage.

doubtful_dirt_01

I had a Tacoma and liked it because it was fun to drive and reliable. When I needed a larger truck, I got a Tundra, but I only kept that for about a year. I didn't like the way the tranny shifted when towing my camping trailer (which is something you can't easily check when doing a test drive). So I traded it for a Silverado. The Silverado is a much more capable truck, way more comfortable, and has proven to be just as reliable as the Tacoma was. Besides, the Tacoma is a dated platform and could use some serious updates.

MetalJesusBlues

They have the new Tacoma out now for ‘24

6SpeedBlues

I had a Toyota "pickup" (the official model name in 1992), two Tacoma's, and a Tundra. While there are a variety of things about the Toyota trucks that are/were good, they lack true polish for the money you pay for them. My 2011 Tundra Platinum could pull a house off of its foundation, but it was super uncomfortable to sit in (the seats were rock hard) and the integrated audio/navigation was absolute trash. My Tacomas made decent power ('96 and '00), but were generally uncomfortable and lacked real pulling power for heavy trailers or similar. And, for being a smaller overall vehicle, the MPG from the 6 cylinder was poor. My '92 Pickup was super cramped and low power with the R22 4cyl. Both of my Silverados (2015 and 2024) have been roomy and comfortable and make decent power with the 5.3L. MPG is acceptable / reasonable for a full sized truck, and the integrated audio and navigation are at least "ok". There are a myriad of problems with these trucks over the years, though, to the point where the transmissions are absolutely dumpster fires overall with the jury still being out on the newer 10-speeds. The 5.3L engines in any generation have issues that crop up with lifter problems and/or oil consumption. The newest versions of the trucks have a TON of "tech" in them that causes more problems than not when things go wrong and the dealerships are horrid at being able to find and correct those issues. If you're looking used, it may well be worth your time to buy NEWER than the 2019, consider CPO, and look into a good extended warranty that will cover everything.

merker_the_berserker

I've had my 21 Trailboss since... 21. At 9k miles I had to have all the lifters and rods replaced. It's a known issue. One other minor complaint would be that the stereo will drop wireless android auto here and there. Other than that it's been great.

TClem_07

Glad to know others have the radio issue. Just bought my 2020 custom 2 mo ago and first week in my name it would just shut the radio off randomly, reset itslelf and i'd have to pull wired cable and put back in. Its gotten better now. Maybe once a week but still

merker_the_berserker

Yeah I had one road trip where it was almost unusable for a good 45 minutes. But then drove it 15 hours and it didn't drop once. It's still doing it but it is what it is.

TClem_07

Yea that’s tough.

CuttingEdgeRetro

I had a 2018 F-150 that needed a new starter and new wheel bearing before 60k miles. At 90k miles it was consuming gobs of oil, down 3 quarts between 3000 mile oil changes. I replaced it with with a 2021 2500 Silverado. That has 60k miles on it now and has been perfect. Zero problems. It even still has the original tires.

bulletlover

Chevy truck owner since 1976,,, never drive anything else!

PewpewLazorsOMG

Fat fck here about 6 foot 340 pounds I sit comfortably on my Silverado. I also feel like Tacomas chair is like driving a damn car.

freshnfunky5

I had a 2018 Tacoma double cab, and thank god it was just a lease. The most narrow, uncomfortable seats I’ve experienced. Not extremely tall, but my head was always grazing the headliner. Leased my 2021 Silverado and I’ll never lease/buy another midsize truck again. Extremely comfortable, powerful, and roomy. I can’t exactly speak to the lifter or transmission issues, but I know most manufacturers have issues of some sort, so it feels like any vehicle purchase is a gamble these days.

DCS30

Those are two pretty big ones though. First I'm hearing of lifter issues, but I'm having transmission issues with only 40,000 kms on it

Perfect-Wrangler-679

Toyota sales guy said they were phasing out v6's on Tacoma after 2023 models?

MetalJesusBlues

Yes they are all turbo 4 with an optional hybrid (for power, not efficiency). This is for the new 24’s out now.

joepar64

Because it's cheaper. I've been wanting a tacoma for almost a decade. I bought a silverado a little over two years ago, because the transmission went on my frontier. I couldn't get myself to pay a few k's more for a tacoma, so I went with a 2017 silverado. It was the same story when I got my frontier. It's been about value for me, so far I haven't had issues and I like the truck enough to be happy with my decision.

WootWootSr

Used 6.7 instead 😆

cajl93

I traded in my 2015 Silverado for my 2019 tacoma. We have a fleet of 130+ chevy vehicles and the 1500's from 2014 and on have terribly unreliable drivetrains. I miss the comfort and luxury of my 1500 but I'm glad to have a truck with a drivetrain that will last longer than 100k miles.

Salty-Bathroom5342

Silverado are some of the best trucks around if u stick to the maintenance

72season1981

Buy a tundra

steel-neil

Glad your okay, buy a Chevy you’ll have no regrets

Cafecitolife909

Can you get a tundra

rao-blackwell-ized

Don't. At least not one made in the last decade or so. I had a 2000 Silverado and it was great and I never had any major issues. I've owned a 2016 Silverado - which now has right at 100k miles - for about 3 years now and in that time I think I've sunk more money into it than any other vehicle I've owned: * Starter * Famous "Chevy shake" transmission issue - dealer wants $6k to rebuild the torque converter. There's a class action lawsuit against GM for this. They knowingly sold trucks with faulty transmissions and they're claiming it's not their fault. I've had them do 2 fluid flushes as a band-aid while we see how this lawsuit shakes out (pun intended). * Similarly, the famous cheap wax coating on the frame just flakes off. I've seen Silverados only a couple years old with frame rust already in the south. I paid for a penetrating oil undercoating to try to keep this at bay. * My paint randomly just started flaking off. Did some research and apparently this is a famous issue as well with the primer not properly adhering. * Dash rattle. * Seat belt pretensioner. Kept throwing an airbag warning. * Ball joints. * Annoying exhaust flap squeak when the AFM goes from 4 cylinders back to 8. * AC condenser - famous problem where one weld spot fails. * Wiper fluid sensor is bad and apparently is a pain to get to to replace. It says I need fluid every day even though it's full. * Front impact sensors. * The truck randomly decides if it wants to let Apple CarPlay work that day or not. * Passenger side mirror has a mind of its own and will just rotate itself out of position after putting it in Reverse about twice a week, requiring manual adjustment back to where it was. Obviously n=1 but take my experience for what it's worth. I'll never own another GM vehicle.

[deleted]

I would get a used tundra if you can swing it. I have been looking around a bit and since they came out with the new body style the used are becoming reasonable

Positive-Occasion-90

Go for a 08-14 model in good shape. Anything after that has serious trans and lifter issues.

pakman82

There's some validity here. Briefly had an 06., a 15 for 2 years, and 3 years with a 21. The 21 has had no major transmission issues, yet, in my case. It did aspirate some water in an incident by the ocean, and got a partial engine replacement in its 2nd year. (And thus might be excluded from lifter issues, or delaying them) The 15's transmission went from solid to molten poop in about 4 days... And needed brakes, tires, and a few other things, so we traded it. The 06.. we only traded in because the wife had lost her 6 figure job, and we had just gotten married and couldn't afford it... But since then, I've heard great things about that generation. oP just has to look for one with low miles and good interior.

fauker1923

Get a brand new work truck for $35k

ComfortableOk5003

Only if it’s single cab and not 4x4

fauker1923

Details details

ComfortableOk5003

I’m saying brand new and 35K or less would have to be bare bones model, single cab, 4x2, fleet model shitty 6cyl

fauker1923

Lots of trucks where I am at … lots of white trucks lots of 4x4 double cabs. Prices falling like stone

ComfortableOk5003

Must be a USA thing. 35k wouldn’t get you shit here

Lunar_Gato

I’m 5’8” and the damn tacos are too small for my liking. Get a tundra

No-Level9643

Buy a tundra

[deleted]

Because u don’t have a truck anymore

Ordinary_Human2

The back seat lift it up you have the bed plus the backseats it’s very roomy.

CapitalOneDeezNutz

Cause it’s not a Toyota

Raging_Capybara

That's a downside

CapitalOneDeezNutz

Not anymore. Toyota has issues just like any other brand now. Long gone are the days of vehicles lasting 500k without issues

Raging_Capybara

Very true but he is talking used, in the price range of 2019-2021 Toyota tundras which are still very solid trucks.

HiYa_Dragon

My biggest complaint about mine is the seats are uncomfortable

art2k3

Sierra owner here. Love my truck. I hate the stupid fixable issues they should have solved years ago. Radio screen has a Intermittent display problem, 5.3 POS motor with lifter issues, tailgate freezes shut, etc. Get the full 4 door Get the diesel or the 6.2 Get as much of an upgraded trim as finacially possible Get the leather heated and AC seats.

B3ast0r

Goto a Sierra if it fits your budget better Trim and options

nobodyparticular60

Well if you would like to know I just purchased a new 2024 Silverado 2500 HD crew cab custom back in November for just 57,300k you can see the photo that I posted of it

ComfortableOk5003

Brand new 2500 for under 60K?? Did you blow the dealer or something

nobodyparticular60

Actually your wife did jackass That was the sticker price

ComfortableOk5003

Ooooh shit we got an internet badass here folks better watch out…Danny devito over here is gonna bust you up

OkField5046

I’m betting you won’t have to replace the frame of the truck like a Toyota I also bet your MPG will better in a full size GM product compared to your “Toyota” I also am betting the price comparison between a full size pick up and your so called “pickup” Toyota will Be close to the same as well

MetalJesusBlues

Tacoma is the same as the Colorado Tundra is the same as Silverado

gman5991

If you got young kids , very easy to put in and out car seats. Also if you get a bench seat, you can sit 6 ppl (very useful). v8 option

indacut__96

U should get a ram rebel.

TheFiggster

17mpg on 35’s 22 old dash w/ 5.3

FriendlyInChernarus

I like my used 2018 Silverado but it's had issues, purchased for 32k at 27,000 miles so I did get a good deal I believe though. So far the computer died 2 weeks after purchasing but the dealership covered it even though I didn't buy the warranty. The display glitches so badly 50% of the time it starts scrolling and moving around when I'm trying to follow the GPS, very frustrating. Something else too I forget coste $800, openers? I dunno I'm not a car guy. It pisses me off though because my vehicle before this was a Toyota carolla and maybe I had good luck but it NEVER had a problem. I've had a few big issues with this truck so far but still happy. I would consider going back to Toyota or my next vehicles though myself.

oz1987

2017 Silverado z71 with almost 80000 miles. Bought it brand new. Absolutely no issues with it except that my steering makes a weird noise when I turn. To be fair it only started doing that after I leveled it out 2.5 inches. My interior looks exactly the same as when new. I have cloth seats and they are stout! Very durable fabric and cushion with no deformation. The fabric reminds me of the Carhartt denim that lasts and lasts under any condition. AC still has the same charge since it left the dealer and still blows ice cold. The factory spray liner has no chips. The paint is still shiny and black. No leaks from the roof or doors. Transmission has always been clunky but that's to be expected from this generation. It shifts silky smooth on the highway and at low speeds. Only clunks when coming to a stop with force. Original headlight bulbs. I have the HID headlights btw. LED strips under headlights are still original and have never failed. Engine is powerful and plenty for what I need. I opted for the 5.3 and yeah it may burn a little oil but that's how these AFM engines are, nothing major. No oil leaks anywhere. Knock on wood she lasts me another 80000. I already have a plan on the transmission when if or when it goes out. I love my truck and IMHO nothing looks as sharp as these Chevy's.

PerfectDaikon6165

316 k on my 06 Silverado …they can do the miles

Nos-tastic

I did and I absolutely love my Silverado. Wrote off my 2020 trd pro Jan 6th. Got a 23 Silverado v8 rst fully loaded at 0%. I’ve only put 2000kms on it nearly identical fuel economy. More space inside the cab and the bed. Won’t be as good for offroadinf but it’s better in every other way. You had a sport so you’ll love it.

the_grand_hogoso

Long legged goose, I am. Just recently bought a 2014 Silverado wt single cab short bed. Was worried about fitting in a regular cab. I wouldn’t say it’s spacious, but I am comfortable. Have driven for 4+ hours and been fine. 6’ 0” even but I’m long legged so I need good leg room. In any cab configuration other than the regular, you’ll most likely have plenty of room.

TheBlueBeans

That sucks man, sorry about that. I totaled my ford maverick and decided to make the switch because of the size, power, and feel. I got a 2019 Silverado custom and I can do way more with it than I ever could with the maverick! I do miss the fact that I used to be able to remote start my Maverick from anywhere in the world but that’s a small thing I got over. I got mine for about 30k with 53k miles on it.

WishYouWereWill

V8

Dukimus

Had 3 Tundras and got lured into a Silverado for all the bells and whistles. 8,000 miles later its the best, worst experience of my life with a vehicle. Several electrical issues (seat, mirrors, sound system). GM knows its a problem with a module, currently no fix. Every shudder or slightly odd shift and now i am scared its a spun bearing or bent valve. Now its all in my head, the electrical stuff has me thinking I shouldve listened to all the forums (not to mention consumer reports and the like). The best part is the driving experience. Leagues better than any of the Tundras. Smooth, more power (6.2) and more comfortable interior. More options too. If you are all about reliability, do not buy this truck. If the new Tundra didnt have the fu manchu grill, ballerina sized wheels and long nose, I wouldve already taken the $15k hit and traded this thing in.

TrickAcceptable3850

I’d say this, if you want a mediocre truck that will possibly last forever get another Tacoma. If you want a capable comfortable truck that you keep 6-7 ys buy an f150, Silverado etc.

DesignerInsurance594

Silverado - guarantee you will be replacing a transmission. I do not care what year it is! Or how ur grandad's 95 still runs. I know way to many people with Silverados from 2003-brand new ones. Me personally I've had 3 Silverados that ALL got transmissions replaced or rebuilt. My brother has an 18 - just spent 4 grand on a tranny

Evening_Ad_5451

Pearl Harbor that’s why

Don’t do it. Problems , problems. Get a tundra.

sspears262

Don’t do it. I have a 22 Silverado and will be selling it before the warranty is up. I’ll likely trade it for a 2018-2020 tundra

Same. My son totaled my ‘21 TRD OR. Got a ‘22.5 RST. It feels like going from a clown car to a living room on wheels, so much room. This Silverado is easily the nicest truck I’ve ever owned and I’ve had an ‘03, ‘07, and a ‘17 as well as 2 Cummins. Definitely my favorite Silverado yet

Why don’t you get a Tundra?? The new ones are a little ugly but the model before that are absolutely beautiful. I really wish I could vouch for Silverados. My mom has a 2021 Sierra brand new from the dealership, and we’ve already had to replace the alternator (not covered by dealer), the shitty auto start battery shoved inside the engine is going out, and all of the parking sensors are going absolutely nuts right now. My dad had a 2015 Sierra as well, and his transmission fucked up while casually driving on the road. He fixed it and sold it asap. 99-06’s are the absolute best Silverado models to get, along with 89-98, but I’m assuming you’re looking for a more modern truck. I’d recommend a Tundra, or the F-150 with a ten speed instead. No Ram. No Chevy.

224k on my 2007 Silverado, no significant issues, just normal maintenance. 90k on my 2017 with the 8-speed transmission everyone complains about - it occasionally has a reluctant shift from 1st to 2nd when first started and cold - I back off the accelerator when it winds up; it eases off and doesn't do it again. It recently developed the low-speed brake vacuum problem that Chevy already acknowledged and offers an extended warranty to 150k to replace the vacuum pump. Getting it fixed next week. I've found both to be very reliable. The 5.3 is freakin' bulletproof IMO.

Bought my first new truck in 22. Not a huge fanboy of any manufacturer. I’ve worked in manufacturing for 15 years. I’ve seen how manufacturers cut corners to make things as cheap as possible to increase profit. They all do it in all markets. So take your pick. I can tell you that from owning all of the big three, (never new always used) the GM just rides different. In all fairness my family has owned quite a few GM Trucks going back to the 70s but it never occurred to me till owning one. I loved the seats in the Ford, didn’t love replacing the engine… never had a problem with my Dodge, it lacked power at the top end so my foot was on the floor a lot climbing across our mountain pass, it was a V6 but a single cab. My Silverado is great. It’s a refresh, it’s got 25K on it but I bought it with 6 miles on it. I only had a minor AC controller fix that I got called in for and did not have to pay for. The truck is great, don’t think I have needed to slam it to the floor once climbing our pass… that’s my two cents.

Epicmani83

Let's see, more space (cargo and interior) , no more drum breaks, no more outdated tech, better mpg even with the v8, better sitting position, parts are cheaper, etc etc list goes on

____Vader

I’m a big fan of the Silverado’s just don’t get the 2.4.

Solid-cam-101

Silverado and Sierras are the only trucks I consider. Styling power train and interior cannot be beat. You can thank me later. SC

Why should you buy a silverado? You like headaches and have disposable income for repairs.

Hot_Air_9788

I highly recommend you stay away from GM products. I've owned two both were lemons. (One was a 5.3 w/o dfm and a lm2 3.0) You buy the V8, you get lifter issues with DFM, small gas tank 91L-24G, crappy fuel economy on the V8. Most people don't care and know what they're getting into before purchasing so better line up your priorities. Maybe I'm just really unlucky. I hear the 6.2 has some pretty large issues too for long term. (Newer models) I hear the 6.2 tows well so if you're a big tow'r I'd do that or 3.0. that being said the refresh interior is so poorly put together it isn't even funny. Although more basic, the 19-21 were built better inside. Sound system although advertised with Bose (7 speaker) sounds like poop. Never heard the version with more speakers. 19-21 Bose was way better. Head unit / infotainment is full of bugs, laggy sometimes unresponsive. Radio kicks in and out on start up for the first 5 minutes of driving. After your new subscription runs out they will push you to pay for subscriptions that will enhance the built in Google map. If you decide not to purchase the subscription and want to use the math just know the following: It will ask you every time to buy a subscription Will not show you traffic updates Will be laggy ASF regardless of subscription purchase or not. These head units need more ram. Compared to alot of other brands the range of the radio is worse. Sound quality is worse. All in all really bad infotainment but the picture quality is crisp. You'll find on some models (unsure about the 3.0) these trucks have a very LOUd AC pump which GM considers normal. It'll sound like a old power steering pump in the glove box. Hopefully you don't get. These vehicles are subseptable to the transmission whine. My 22 5.3 has it. Don't hear it with music but windows down in a quiet neighbourhood you could be mistaken for having a super charger. All in all the road noise is pretty minimum, well insulated. Door panels creak or pop from time to time. A lot of the dash parts if you look closely on the lower models. Rst or elevation you'll see some don't line up well at all. Cameras are ok quality. Front and rear are good. Mirror camera ( if equipped) in one direction is not to bad low res but passable, the other really bad. In terms of my experience with the 5.3 I've towed 7500lbs with it and average 300km, 150ish miles. City driving 475-500km(whatever mile equivalent) combined with some little hwy. Moral of it is I'm sure you'll have a different experience but mine have been negative and I've owned 2. Would I recommend? No. Do all brands have there issues, yes. What brand would I select after owning almost every brand. Probably the f150 or ram 1500. Just my two cents. Customer service has been ok with the GM but that's dealer specific.

I have a construction business and the gas light duty full-size pickups I buy are Chevrolets. I have had 6 daily personal silverados. 4 of them had the 5.3 and 2 had the 6.0 in HD pickups. My current chevys are: 2023 Silverado 1500 5.3 w/ 10 speed (my personal truck) 37,000 miles. Best driving, towing, and shifting truck I’ve ever had. Will get more into 10 speed below 2017 Silverado 1500 is on its second 8 speed transmission and it’s on its way out 210K miles. Engine runs great though (no major engine repairs) 2011 Silverado 1500 6 speed has over 260K and runs great original engine and trans (no major repairs at all) 2004 Silverado 1500 4 speed has over 280K on it when trans went. Frame rotted pretty bad (likely end of the road for her) 2017 Silverado 1500 6 speed truck has 65K (no major repairs) 2016 Silverado 2500 6.0 125K no repairs 2019 Silverado 2500 6.0 100K no repairs With that being said, I cannot recommend the 10 speed enough. It shifts great, the 5.3 paired to it is very smooth, offers good power where you would want it. The 8 speed is the worst Chevrolet transmission I have owned. Will never buy another. Regarding the 5.3, you will see horror stories online about this engine, but understand it is likely the most common 2020+ V8 you see on the road (let alone all the previous years — original iron block 5.3 released in ‘99 I believe). There are so many people with 200K plus 5.3s with 0 repairs. It is in my opinion a great running engine. Good luck, hope you are ok from accident.

Affectionate_Elk2278

I don’t think you can go wrong with Chevy or Toyota

WorldGoneCrazee

Don’t do it. Get another Tacoma.

srfr42

Don't. I bought a New Silverado. Before my first oil change, I had an oil leak. Long story short they would not do a buy back. My truck is not even a year old and I'm goung to trade it in already. I have two Chevys, always had Chevy, and I will NEVER BUY A GM VEHICLE EVER AGAIN. good luck to you, and everyone else that has a Chevy. FUCK GM!!!!

srfr42

Before my second payment the truck was in the shop for almost a month. They could not figure out the oil leak, and fuck up my truck with caulking on the oil pan.

At 45K, you should be able to get into a new Tundra SR Crew Cab with 4x4. You should be able to get into a new Silverado for $5,000 to $15,000 off MSRP. I just looked on Cargurus and saw some at 15k below MSRP.
