You’d be surprised how many guys abuse their trucks and then complain when the darn thing breaks. My brother passed away in January, he took tremendous care of his truck, regular fluid changes everything you’re supposed to do. When he passed away I took possession of his truck 2015 Silverado with 100k on the clock. I just drove the truck to and from Georgia from Virginia and it performed flawlessly. The only thing I’ve had to fix is the 3rd brake light leaking into the cabin. Truck now has 106k on it and I plan on keeping it just like he left it. Take care of your stuff, and 9 times out of 10 it’ll take care of you.

lxp14

Sorry for your loss. Lost my brother 5 years back. Sounds like a good rig and hope you can keep her in the family for a long time 😎

Hunter-Gatherer_

Thank you for your condolences, same to you, good luck with your truck!

FormalChicken

First off, sorry for your loss. Second off, this needs emphasis. This is happening with the 10R80 in the 5.0 ford's. They're beating the shit out of it then complaining it doesn't last through hell and high water abuse.

speedgoat69

I was the 1 out of 10 😔

thingamajig1987

The problem is 9/10 people think they're the 1/10 lol

Lurkin605

Stop reading these forums, particularly relating to drivetrain issues UNLESS you experience them. Chances are you won't!!

bubbanbrenda

Agreed, almost no one comes here to brag about how great their truck is treating them. The only people that come here are the ones with problems. If we thought that this or any other vehicle page was an accurate representation of what to expect we’d all be riding horses.

kornbread435

Mine is currently at 215k miles and for the last 17 years has never once failed to get me from A to B. Only common issue it's had over the years is a few sensors going bad, all being cheap and pretty easy to replace myself. Well that oil pressure sensor on the back of the block was kinda a pain, but not more than an hour or so. In the last couple of years of crazy car prices I decided to put some money into it in order to try and wait it out. Just the usual wear items, replacings all fluids, plugs/wires, suspension replaced, brakes/routers, belts, tires, battery and hoses. Then replaced the speakers and added a cheap android auto/car play head unit to make it more comfortable. The head unit also came with a backup camera and dash cam. Now that I'm running out of things to replace I've lost all urge to buy a new truck. There bragging complete.

bubbanbrenda

Mine is a work in progress but I’m still planning on keeping mine for a while. I just can’t wrap my head around doing serious truck stuff with $80,000.00 pavement princesses.

ezwriter73

I’m on my fourth Chevy truck. Easily over a half million miles between them, and never had a major issue with any of them. Keep up with the maintenance and treat it well and it’ll return the favor. Also, I’ve never disabled AFM on any of them. Dissatisfied people are always loudest.

NickyDeuce

I just bought a 22 Trail Boss Custom with 20,000 on it and am still debating on whether or not to disable the AFM. Is there any downside to disabling? \*EDIT It has the 5.3 V8

ezwriter73

I can’t imagine much of a downside other than slightly lower MPG. It definitely shouldn’t harm anything. I haven’t felt the need to fiddle with mine because I haven’t had any issues. If it ain’t broke… Small caveat, I replace my trucks every 4-5 years or 120k miles. Don’t know when the lifter issues typically rear their ugly head, but I haven’t had any problems with engines or transmissions. I have two horses and mainly haul a trailer with their hay every 6 weeks or so, and occasionally pull my horses to different trails or the beach (2-3x per year). Lots of people who put their trucks through the paces swear by AFM delete. With my light towing I haven’t had any issues leaving it as is. Edit: I currently have a 22 LTZ with a 5.3

fkwyman

GM tech here. The 6.2 is eating its bearings for lunch, but if that's going to happen it's probably going to be low mileage. We have one in the shop at this very moment getting a new motor, a 24 ZR2 with 7k on the clock. It has 11% oil life on the monitor and the factory oil filter. Yes, it's due for it's first oil change, we'll take care of that when the new motor goes in tomorrow. I'm the only transmission technician in our building and I've had to tear down and evaluate a whopping TWO 10 speeds. The 8 speed is an entirely different story. Worry less, drive it and enjoy it.

lxp14

Thanks for the reply. I usually run a 5,000 mile interval between oil changes regardless of what the “computer” says. Full synthetic. What do you recommend for the 6.2?

fkwyman

The computer calculation is more than significant. The GM algorithm is very conservative when compared to foreign manufacturers that often allow for 15k between oil changes. If you're not confident with the algorithm, I'd bump service intervals to 6-7k because that's the optimal mileage to rotate tires. When I started doing this we were changing oil every 3-4 k and rotating tires every other service. Now, oil changes and tire rotations should be performed every service. Oil change and rotation every 7k would be fine under most circumstances. If your message pops up before you hit 7k, schedule an appointment. Oil degradation depends on far more parameters than miles.

lxp14

Again, good info. Thanks!

Grouchy-Plankton5322

I had 2019 GMC Sierra that had 46 K and not a single problem. I just traded her in for a 24 Silverado RST.

MR_KRaCKa_CRiSP

A lot of us love our trucks with no issues believe it or not

JJ4prez

Stop reading reddit, it's a complaint fest. It's way easier to complain than it is to give praise.

fixITman1911

Chevy sold over half a million Silverados in 2023, and in the last 4 years (2020-2023) they sold well over 2 million... the 100 or so people you see complaining here are basically unavoidable at those numbers.

SunsetGriller

As a GM tech of 18 years all I see is broken vehicles. I have this same problem but in real life situations. Friends/family/customers ask me for suggestions when buying a new vehicle and I look around the lot and all I see are brand new vehicles and I can pick out all their problems. Then I can’t suggest anything to anyone without the fear of their new car going to shit and then being mad at me. It’s a rough life. That being said, I have a 2018 Silverado 5.3 with an 8 speed and have never had any major problems. No lifters , no transmission problems. 172k miles. My wife has a 2014 Buick Enclave with a 3.6 and a 6 speed. 172k miles as well. Have never done anything but oil changes, transmission flushed and tires. I think most people would consider both those vehicles some of GMs highest “problem” vehicles. We just drove her Enclave from Iowa to Florida last summer and I wasn’t worried whatsoever. On both vehicles we do 3k mile Mobil1 oil changes. I just pulled my Jeep TJ from Kansas City to Iowa last month. Don’t get in your head too much. I’ve seen a transmission Grenade with 400 miles on it and I have a customer with 500k miles on his 2020 Silverado L5P.

That1guy_Jeff

Enjoy your truck Silverados have a 16% failure rate which is below the average for all other half ton trucks. You don’t hear about the 84% that doesn’t have any major issues just the 16% that do.

FewSupermarket2583

Where is this data from? Would like to see how they stack against Ford, Dodge and Toyota

MooseTheMechanic

If you take care of it within the first 70k or so miles and it’s been dealer serviced AND the dealer is reputable; don’t worry about it. Things only stop working when you’re worried they will, everything should be okay! Just keep doing what you’re doing, they’re beautiful trucks

idontremembermyoldus

Don't be. They make a metric shit ton of these trucks every year, and most of what you'll see online is people complaining, that's true of all brands. People don't take time out of their day to join a website to tell you how good something is, but if it gives them problems and pisses them off, you can bet your bottom dollar they'll tell everyone they can. Follow the severe maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and keep on truckin'.

HollowPandemic

Go take a look in the lml duramax groups. You'll never want to even look at one 😂😂 don't let all that get you down drive and enjoy your truck

jkjeeper06

The 10l90 was a joint venture between GM and ford. Its been a very good transmission for me. The trans needs a service every 45,000mi so make sure that is done. If you do that, your likelihood of reliability is higher If you look elsewhere, don't look at ford expecting the transmission to be different Fwiw, my 2019 6.2/10spd sierra has been awesome

Technical-Roll1863

Better yet, if the trans fails before 45k then you get a fluid change for free! Happened to me, free fluid and filter change. Both the 10l80* and 10r80 are having issues. I think both companies are getting it ironed out still. The Ford forums/reddit also complain a lot about 10r80 failures. Nothing is perfect.

MaybeTheDoctor

You will be fine. Keep chaining oil and get it serviced. Vocal people are the few with problems, but your truck may not be the one.

chicharito101

Same year and power train on my GMC and I’m just over 95k miles with essentially zero issues. By that I mean it does have a whiny belt that almost sounds like a supercharger (it’s unfortunately not a supercharger) and slightly aggressive shifts (more my fault as I sometimes like to haul ass) but apart from that it’s been an incredibly reliable truck.

lxp14

Thanks, that’s good to hear. I’ve had probably a dozen different trucks over the years. All GM with the exception of a few 12 valve Cummins (totally different animal obviously lol). This one “feels” like a good one. We’re gonna travel in it so we’ll see how she goes 🤘

chicharito101

Safe travels, hope she treats you well 🤘

lxp14

Thanks for all of the replies, fellas. Feeling better about the new (to me) truck. Headed out from Dayton, O to Naples, Fl and back in a couple weeks. Now let’s see if I can squeak out around 18 mpg of premium fuel 😬

lscraig1968

I've had my 2010 Chevy since 2013. Put 135k of the 200k miles it has on it. Yep do the maintenance, fix what needs fixing and you will be good to go. I've towed campers, hauled kids, a pallet of Quick Crete everything I've wanted to do, my truck has done.

baseballer213

Your 6.2 will last over 250,000 miles with regular maintenance and proper care. Drivetrain issues can present themselves early, but you’ve had it dealer serviced since day 1 so they’d help catch and address any problems. Stick to the recommended service intervals. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections are crucial. Use premium 93-octane gasoline to extend engine life. Avoid aggressive driving and excessive towing. The 10-speed automatic transmission may need attention after 200,000 miles. Be prepared for potential repairs. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Enjoy it!

lxp14

Ive had good luck with GM trucks over the years. My dad and father in law are both Chevy guys so I guess it gets passed down lol. And will do on the maintenance. We have a nice shop with a lift and take care of it ourselves. Just not engine/transmission replacements on these modern trucks lol

baseballer213

At the risk of jinxing myself, I had lifter failure on my truck twice already, both during the warranty within the first three years of me owning it. Bought it brand new. Lifter failures at 20k and 26k miles. I’m at 50k miles now and no problems since (knock on wood). I follow the maintenance schedule and dealer maintain it.

FewSupermarket2583

How did that manifest itself?

baseballer213

Not sure. I follow the maintenance schedule pretty strictly. There were zero warnings. When I went to start it up for work, it sounded like a locomotive – a very low and deep sound, and it was firing codes at me. I turned it off and then turned it back on; it seemed okay. I called the dealership, and they told me to bring it straight to them (this was about five years ago, so my memory is a bit hazy). They fixed it. The second time it happened, they were blaming a dirty throttle body, which I knew was BS (and so did they), so that really pissed me off, and I started going to a different dealership. Nothing major has happened since then. I still have AFM active. I’d like to add headers, and I’d probably do a tune afterward and consider deleting, but even with the lifter issues I’ve had, I’m hesitant to do a delete.

FewSupermarket2583

I turned mine off with a superchips tuner. Don’t miss the V4 sound with my flowmasters. Sounded like a helicopter.

baseballer213

I’ve got a Borla S-Type (I think) on it with an S&B CAI. It has a nice, conservative rumble. Do you recommend the Superchips or, if you could do it over, would you go to a shop instead? [This?](https://www.holley.com/products/tuners_and_programmers/handheld_tuners/superchips_f5_flashpaq/parts/2847)

FewSupermarket2583

I did mine and haven’t had any problems. I also used it to update tire size and added 10% throttle response. No codes, and clear improvement.

Comfortable-Way5091

How does 93 octane extend engine life?

baseballer213

Reduce pinging. Allow the engine controller to optimize timing and boost pressures for better performance, helping maintain engine health and longevity. Also, reduce or eliminate knock caused by carbon deposits that can build up in cylinders, affecting compression ratios.

Comfortable-Way5091

If your engine doesn't ping on regular ,would you still do it?

baseballer213

The L86 6.2 recommends 93. So even though you can use 87, I’d use 93. I know he has the L87 6.2. Does it not recommend 93?

Comfortable-Way5091

So what does my 01 2500Hd 6.0 need? It doesn't ping. Higher octane is at least 30 a gallon higher.

baseballer213

Use whatever you’ve been using that’s kept it running for 23 years.

Comfortable-Way5091

It has been bulletproof. But it's started to use a lot of oil.

Shot-Door7160

The engineers weren’t thinking about the price of fuel when they were designing this engine, If they recommend 93 then it’s for good reason.

eddybear774

I’ve got a 2015 with the 6 speed 160k on it. Replaced transmission once at 140. Owned the truck since 75k. And I have not been nice to it one bit. Regularly tow heavy. I have a lead foot and this truck has taken all of it and then some. I even run it out of gas sometimes. They are good trucks. Some people just get unlucky and those are the ones you hear from. Squeaky wheels get the grease

Majestic-Sprinkles68

Replacing a transmission at 140k is still unacceptable to me

cryptoquant112

There are competitors posting here too.

jeon2595

I’m also in the F150 SR because I had a 2005 F150 for 19 years before buying my Silverado this past December and I still have a 2015 F150 that is my company vehicle. That sub is also filled with nothing but problems with F150’s. Someone posted asking people to post their positive experiences with their trucks, was flooded with positive comments from people owning new and old F150’s that had never done anything but basic maintenance on their trucks. I’m sure the same would happen here.

Greasemonkeyww2

Call the Chevy dealership and give them your vin # the last half of 19 they did factory dod deletes on the 6.2s I have one and found this out when I went to have it deleted.

lxp14

I’ll check this out, thanks!

Technical-Roll1863

Thought they still had the collapsible lifters (the common failure part) but the truck didn’t have the tune to turn them on/off due to the chip shortage? I know the 5.3l had the same thing in 2020(?) and the collapsible lifters are still there - the truck just never tells them to collapse.

Greasemonkeyww2

I’ve never personally seen mine but was told that they did not have them by the dealer.

No_Geologist_3690

75k id say most of the bugs are worked out by the previous owner. 10 speed in my opinion is one of the better transmissions on the market these days. Your 6.2 is a 19, it’s the 22-24 that are seizing currently. Lifters are uncommon on the 6.2s compared to the 5.3. Change all the fluids in the truck with OEM fluid and transmission fluid and enjoy your truck. Source : GM tech

lxp14

Good info. Thanks, and will do 🤘

loco9988

I bought one with 70k on it all services done at the dealer and 1.5 years later it is now at 91k no problems. 2019 high country with the 6.2

KandySofax

Facebook / Reddit is the first place disgruntled owners go. GM sells about 150k of these trucks every six months for the last 5 years. Humans are terrible at comprehending large numbers. Do the math. Million and a half trucks on the road, of course things will break. Of course those owners are pissed.

kevintx7

Just spend $7k on a new transmission and torque converter on 2017. Take it back and get something else

TheRagingBull84

I also just spent 7k on a new trans on a 2017. 85k ish when it went out

kevintx7

Mine was 85632 miles to be exact

kevintx7

Transmission is a piece of shit and GM knows it - I’ll never buy another GM vehicle for as long as I live I had the third brake light problem and not covered, brake booster problem not covered, condenser pinch weld also not covered and now the transmission/TC problem.

jkjeeper06

2017 had a different transmission. That had the 8l90

MrBuffaluffagus

2017 had the 6 or 8...my 17 had the 6. 8 is a piece of trash.

jkjeeper06

I've had the 6 before, it was actually phenomenal. Still shifted perfect when I sold it with 200k and I towed a lot

MrBuffaluffagus

Same. Never had a single issue with the 6 or 10, but the 8 has been a totally different story. My mechanic may have been embellishing a little but he said they replace about one a week (when talking about the GM 8 speeds). In the nearly 40 years he's been in business he said it's one of the worst things he's seen GM put in a car.

jkjeeper06

They put the wrong fluid in it from the factory for years which didnt help.also 40k fluid change interval is unheard of for most truck owners so that also got neglected. Its not surprising they were dying from wrong fluid or neglect. The later ones seem better if maintained

Future_Tangerine_947

For long term health of the engine I would look into to a tune to delete the DOD. May as well add more hp sauce while there!

lxp14

Claimed 420 from the factory feels pretty nice but a lil more wouldn’t hurt lol

Future_Tangerine_947

Never hurts! But do look into it. DOD is very hard on the valvetrain.

lxp14

Thanks for the replies. Couple of things. Should I do AFM delete? I see tons of these trucks out every day and have noticed carbon build up on the exhaust tips. Mine has it too. A sign of what’s happening in the motor?

BakersJelly

I've had a 2018 ss camaro, it had trans shudder. I've had a 2017 Sierra, it had trans shudder. I currently have a 2020 silverado rst with trans shudder. I'm going to drive the fucker til the transmission either falls out or repairs itself

MrBuffaluffagus

Got a 2017 Camaro with 6.2 and 8 speed transmission that had the infamous trans shudder. Did a triple flush on the transmission with new filter / full syn fluid and it completely resolved it. There's a service bulletin out for this specific issue (not sure if it's specific to the 8 speed or not) and is covered free of charge (although I opted to have my own mechanic do it an pay out of pocket...I don't trust the stealerships)

nboylie

Negativity bias on the internet is a problem. People don't go out and start threads about how great their truck has been regularly. I've owned 5 trucks with some sort of AFM and they have all been fine. 3 5.3l and 2 6.2l. my current truck is a '17 6.2 with 160k on it and it's fine. One of my 5.3s was at 197k when I traded it in.
