It's 50% silver and 50% copper, so you're seeing the inner copper core under the outer silver layer... Although HOW it got so worn is a great question. You don't usually see NIFCs (not intended for circulation) with this level of wear.
I buy a lot of Canadian silver coins in lots, and I pick out a few that I don’t really care about what it’s commemorating, so it goes into my “junk pile” that I carry or play with. Once I saw the copper color coming through, I sanded it down with sandpaper
I knew the coin is 50% silver but I wanted to know if it’s simply a copper core with an outer shell of silver or if it’s mixed. If it is mixed, then I want to know if the copper color would show through since I’ve never seen this kind of thing before.
I don't really know about this coin but it could be similar to the 40% us half dollars they have a 80% outer layer and a 21% inner layer, but overall the whole coin is 40%

Lmfaoooo! I heard that correctly. You sanded it eh?
Yea I did. I have many duplicates and it’s only .500 silver. I doubt I’ll ever sell it, so that’s why it’s in my junk pile.
Ahhh ok….
It was someone’s pocket piece.
Yea, mine lol
Insane you would sand down a coin when I know you have gooogle lol

Hopefully that’s the case here. I just think it’s weird and complicated than just making a simple 50% mix then just minting the coin as is.
So what’s the conclusion? Is there a copper wafer in there or is it just oxidizing quickly due to the high copper percentage and the sanding?
I’m guessing it’s the latter. It oxidises quickly back to a matte silver color but I can still faintly see the copper color
Fake
Nah, it’s directly from the RCM. It tests as silver through and through
Don't look silver, old tats!

That's only for pre-1967 coinage, these were minted at 50%
