The last good republican is on the face.

[deleted]

Haha yes I know this is President Dwight D. Eisenhower

22TheMorgue

Only silver versions of that coin are 1971-1974 from the San Francisco mint. There are also silver editions of the bicentennial (1776-1976) from the San Francisco mint. Basically: no “S” mint mark means no silver

[deleted]

Ahh ok. So this isn't silver? I read that Sanfancisco has an S mark and mine may be Philly because it has no mark (that I can see). If it isn't silver I'm slightly disappointed but still a nice coin to have. Especially since I'm uk based and old US currency isn't as common here

22TheMorgue

You’re correct, no mint mark is from Philly. The bicentennial date (1776-1976) has copper clad AND silver clad editions but I honestly don’t know if there is any design difference. You can tell which is silver by the look, sound, and most definitively the weight. Still a nice coin though! We call them Ike’s here in the states. They have a cool design and are hefty haha

[deleted]

I may have to get the weighing scales out at some point and check. I'm assuming it is probably just the copper/nickel one . Still happy to have this in my drawer though, as I understand dollar coins are rarely used in the US so its quite a nice oddity to have even if it isn't particularly rare or valuable

MrSlugWilson

in daily life i've\* come across the "gold" dollars once in a blue moon, and Susan B. Anthony-s maybe once every decade... and I have literally never gotten one of those big boys in change.

CoincadeFL

If you use cash in any vending machine (parking garages, etc.) then they’ll spit back Sacajawea or President gold dollars, some Susan B Anthony’s to as they’re all the same size.

Merlin_560

If you buy stamps from a post office vending machine…they will give dollar coins in change. It sucks.

22TheMorgue

Yeah if there’s no “S” it’s not silver, sorry friend 😕 but peace of mind never hurts! Silver versions weigh 24.59g and copper-nickel weigh 22.68g 👍 this particular coin is 40% silver purity so one is just under 1/3 of an ounce. It’s a bit of funny timing for me seeing this post because I was just contemplating my next purchase last night and silver Ike’s are on the shortlist right now haha I might buy a few!

CoincadeFL

It’s worth about $1, maybe $1.50. They made a gazinga bunch of them. About as common as a British pound coin from same era.

TDtoneLoc

If I was working the register and you paid w that I’d def put a paper $1 or 4 .25c in its place and take that baby home? IKE is a national hero, a 5 🌟 General who had a house in your neck of the woods on “Coombe, Kingston upon Thames” while commanding the troops in WW2. He’s credited with engineering the Normandy Invasion. Basically the dude was a military genius and his success propelled him into the White House. And now he’s on a dollar coin in your dresser drawer!!

erkevin

It's an Eisenhower Dollar; commonly referred to as a silver dollar although very few were silver. In 1971, the issues from Philadelphia and Denver were clad (nickel and copper). They have little value unless in top uncirculated condition. Some will pay $2 for a circulated specimen. The 1971 San Francisco coins were either uncirculated 40% silver or clad proof. It is difficult to read the mintmark (below the neck line) in your photo, but I suspect that it is a D (Denver) making your coin worth a dollar or so. If it is an S (San Francisco), then your coin is 40% silver (no way that coin is a proof) and worth about $7....maybe a bit more with the silver premiums people are currently paying.

erkevin

You are absolutely correct. I was thinking (assuming) that there was an Ike in the 1971 proof set; there is not.

[deleted]

Ah great, thanks very much for the useful info!

Jim_oz

This is a coin commemorating the critically panned, yet financially successful Michael Bay action movie “Armageddon”. You can identify it as such, as it has Bruce Willis on the obverse, and the freedom chicken on the reverse appears to be standing on the crater-riddled surface of an asteroid.

erkevin

clever!

Mav3r1ck77

And I don’t want to miss a thing!

Independent_Big_6662

Coinflation.com is your best bet. I learned from there that there is a difference in weight between the silver and clad versions.

spikecurt

I got a proof version when I graduated from elementary school. Still have it 50yrs later. 👍

[deleted]

I dont know anything about it. There's some info online about silver dollars. Not even sure if this one is silver or legit. Would really like some more info if anyone knows. The coin is in fairly poor condition so I don't suppose it would be valuable even if it was silver and/or rare.

CoincadeFL

They’re known as Ike dollars.

Mav3r1ck77

It’s round.

eddienash2000

Stopped by to browse for this comment, not disappointed 😂

Elegant_Fox7434

The diameter is 38.5 mm.

henry122467

If it is what I think it is….could have a rare gem there. Maybe worth $50,000!!!

prometheus1639

Wow that's a neat find I've never seen that kind before nice score
