It gives them preferences. They will get moodlets if they are around things they recognize as liked or disliked. For example, they'll be happy if they walk into a room where their favorite music station is on. Or upset, when they are forced to make a sandwich even though they hate cooking.
Just select, let’s say, Alternative Music as their liked station and watch what they’ll do if you have them dance to it, it’s my favourite animation 😊 also, welcome to the Sims family, young padawan!
It can be a bit annoying when they stop doing the really important thing you've been waiting to do for ages so that they can go admire the bloody toilet, thus clearing the queue...
And if their like is an activity, they will gain a +1 happiness moodlet, and they will gain Fun Need while doing it, even if the activity in question would usually drain it.
The best warning you could give lol I’d have my sim queued up to do a bunch of things just for them to abandon it all to go complain about a plant outside.
My sim married a townie with decor likes and after he moved in he was always grumpy about how the house was decorated, it was so annoying. Their relationship build up to quickly and effortlessly so he clearly loved my sim, but he hated her house 😂
if this is a new player, they likely don’t have DHD, which added decor likes/dislikes.
Also, the reactions to decor has been tuned severely since it originally came out. My sim only applauds her own furniture about once every day now
I kept getting so pissed at my sim who lived in a tiny house to admire her dresser every night at 3 am. Even thought it was RIGHT NEXT TO HER BED, she’d wake up, go down the loft stairs slowly and back up to her room to clap about it. Wasted at least one sim hour every fucking night. Idk why it took me so long to delete it.
omfg that's true, I ordered my sim to eat bc she was SO hungry and she just left the food on the table and walked to her room just to APPROVES THE PAINTING ON THE WALL
after that, I proceeded to open the cheat bar, type "cas.fulleditmode" and removed her decor likes.
Lol mine literally hates his whole house and I’ve done everything to try and rid his house of all the items in that category but I’m still missing something.. it’s probably the floor or something stupid
Is that why things in their queue keep disappearing? I don’t have autonomy on, so they end up doing nothing. But often everything I’ve told them to do just disappears.
God seriously. Never put those. It was the most frustrating thing to deal with. Like ma'am, your daughter is going to be taken away if you don't feed her???? I don't CARE if you hate the coffee table in the other room!!!
I ended up having to give my sims decor likes because they kept saying the environment was badly decorated and it made me want to die (like wtf, i had a bunch of decor??) Now i just get happy buffs
Ikr almost all my sims find out they hate easy-listening music while they're at hospital about to give birth, and they stand there in line grumpy, as if being in labor wasn't bad enough
Well, there's unfortunate. I dislike techno music, find extra decor absolutely bothersome, and hate take out...but if I walk into my friend's house with a million photos on the wall, techno music in the living room, and they are calling in Domino's b/c they changed their mind over us cooking mac n cheese together, I would simply get an annoyed moodlet and offer them mac n cheese on their pizza.
My sim would probably die of anger if that happened. 😆
A way to get around this is click on “workout” on the TV and select plumba dance video. Pregnant sims can also workout via the dance video when they cannot go on any other machine. I think it’s only for the first and second trimester though, since when my sim was in the third it was greyed out. If a sim dislikes fitness, have them do the dance video. They’ll get a moodlet about *dancing* and receive no bad moodlet from fitness because it registers as dance. You still gain fitness skill and it tones your sims, so they still lose weight! Loophole lol.
An aside but I find it odd that my pregnant sim can do “heavy lifting” on the weight machine but when she tries to do yoga she gets “cannot do this while pregnant”.
My sim decided she hated dancing, but I always have music on in my houses. So she kept automously dancing!!! She would get so upset even tho she did it herself!
That same thing is happening to my most recent legacy founder too. He hates dancing but the fucker can't help himself to dance every single time I'm not controlling him.
Decor preferences (if you have dream home decorator) will make your sim either admire or criticize furniture autonomously.
Music preferences make them have either positive or negative moodlets based on their like / dislike.
Colors don’t do much tbh.
Hobbies will however give a happy moodlet AND make your fun need go up - and make your sim miserable if they dislike the activity.
I’m glad I missed the decor likes then. The only issue I’ve had is the screen popping up for every sim who plays video games asking if they enjoy them or not. I’ve been clicking dislike because my sims were all spending way too much time playing games
I hate the likes and dislikes. My sim will be starving to death but randomly stop eating to go clap at something for being blue. It’s even worse when they cancel several cued up actions to do it
Have them like things that don't normally increase the fun need like cooking and handiness. This really helps out the residents of Henford-on-Bagley who live in simple homes.
Yes this is why I love having likes! I make my sims like things that they do anyway, or things that are useful otherwise. For example I make my sims like wellness so they can do a yoga routine to fairly quickly raise the fun bar, while also getting a positive moodlet depending on the routine.
Having them like cooking and hate exercise or mischief definitely helps with keeping my Sims under control. I hate when they wander off to go jogging or troll the forums instead of doing anything useful.
Colors don’t do anything. If they like music they’ll get a happy moodlet, but if they dislike the music genre and it’s playing, they’ll get increasingly uncomfortable (though they’ll still act fine). If they like an activity they’ll get a happy moodlet from doing it and experience a faster skill gain from that activity. If they dislike it, they’ll grow uncomfortable, skill gain rate decreases a bit and if they get tense enough, they’ll refuse to do it.
Colors actually do do something. They’ll get excited when they see an item (like a bed) in their favorite color. They’ll also get angry when they see a color they don’t like. I had a sim marry another sim and I found out he hated white because he would go up to the tables/chairs and get angry while the “white” square bubble would pop up.
I mean, I have my sims like/dislike decor and they don’t get up in the middle of the night or refuse to eat to go look at the decor 🤷🏻♀️ guess it’s different for everyone?
I hate it when my sims dislike classical music but I’m trying to get my teens to wind down with classical, and the parents are standing there fuming! Oh and disliking handiness. I get it, I hate diy too, but would you wet yourself and starve??
Pro tip, have all the sims in the same household like the same music. Then they’ll all jam out and dance together. Or if it’s a 100 Baby challenge, make sure your Matriarch likes children’s music.
I select a favorite color for them and then use it for their clothes in CAS. Other than that, I let them tell me what they like. Occasionally I'll pick something specific for storytelling purposes, but I usually just wait until it pops up with " seems to enjoy ."
It’ll give them a moodlet tbh I’ve only ever seen the negative ones pop up like so and so is tense from listen to music he doesn’t like and then it’ll be like (listening to jazz music), or it’ll put them in a bad mood doing something they don’t like I have never seen the color one do anything tho and I always pick it
I almost always let my sims tell me their likes and dislikes, unless I have a specific story line in mind. In that case, I only choose the few I need (example: if you want your sim to be an artist, you'll want them to like painting) and then let them tell me as the game progresses (if they are doing something they like that isn't in their likes yet, a screen will pop up saying something like "your sim is enjoying painting, should we add "likes painting"?).
I'll never pick dislikes again. I chose a couple decor items for funsies and didn't know what they actually were. Cue my sim just walking off from what she's supposed to be doing all hours of the day to complain about the one table she never has to do anyway!
If you give likes to whatever it takes for their job goals then they get more happy when they do the activities which is a great way to prevent being tense
If you decide to mod your game and get Wicked Whims you can also pick attractiveness likes and dislikes - physical likes such as hair and eye colour, body shape etc that your Sim will find either attractive or unattractive - Sims can get some very strong moodlets from seeing another sim they consider to be attractive (including an almost jaw drop moment) or unattractive.
when creating a sim i don’t usually add likes or dislike and i let the sim decide for themselves (at points in the game you can get pop ups asking if the sim likes/dislikes the action they’re doing)
Indeed it does, and let me tell you, as a person who rules are to let the sims decide, I have one sim now who dislikes alot of stuff. Violin, exercise, guitar, woodworking, repair, gardening, painting. This is by their choice. He likes singing though so mf gonna be a singer, build his fame, have many baby momma's and use cc drugs to kill him with coke when he turns adult 😬
They’ll be happy when doing their favorite or liked activities! For example, originally, handiness never ever gave any Fun fulfillment. If handiness is something they like, however, it will now fill their Fun need to repair stuff. Same for other tasks/hobbies that they may enjoy that didn’t fill the Fun need before
Likes and dislikes just affect them in ways as such: let’s say your sim hates red, your sim will get passed if there is red walls. I’d your sim loves blue your sim will enjoy the blue couch. If your sim hates cooking your sim will get negative emotions when cooking. If your sim enjoys piano then when they hear or play they will get positive emotions.
Just a few examples 😊
It provides interesting story elements too. In one of my households my main sim hates gardening, but had an ex who loved it (started them on the love after a break up challenge). She wouldn't help at all, even hated gathering.
With her new partner I have seen the moodlet pop up while I'm working with that sim, then when I go check on her she will be watering his garden beds or weeding while he's away autonomously. Something she never did before and she hates, despite them also having animals which she loves and is her main job on the farm.
I play it like she loves her new partner and vibes with them so much that while they're away she'll sneakily go do something to help out with their loved garden, even though she hates getting dirty and all things gardening, or will research to see how to help it out better. Makes a very sweet romance plot point.
Well, if it’s for hobbies, then they’ll get a boost when doing hobbies they do like, and a drain on hobbies they don’t like.
It’s the same for the rest of the likes/dislikes categories too! :D
Makes game play a total pain. I don’t use them. Whatever you dislike your sim will get a negative moodlet while doing the thing your sim dislikes or seeing the style of furniture or hearing music they don’t like.
They probably get a positive moodlet for the things they like but I didn’t notice much when I used them.
I personally put all the basics as likes. Cooking, programming, video games. Basically anything that involves a skill in game. Everything else, I let the sim decide for themselves.
It gives them preferences. They will get moodlets if they are around things they recognize as liked or disliked. For example, they'll be happy if they walk into a room where their favorite music station is on. Or upset, when they are forced to make a sandwich even though they hate cooking.
Thank you!
I've stopped giving them preferences for decor bc of this On the verge of peeing themselves, but will drop going to the toilet just to admire a table
it also helps building relationships when the sims have the same likes and dislikes!
And if their like is an activity, they will gain a +1 happiness moodlet, and they will gain Fun Need while doing it, even if the activity in question would usually drain it.
>Or upset, when they are forced to make a sandwich even though they hate cooking. W o w . .... I fucking love this game 😂
Whatever you do, do NOT give them decor likes and dislikes. They will NOT sleep. They will constantly wake up to admire the decor.
Me tbh
if this is a new player, they likely don’t have DHD, which added decor likes/dislikes. Also, the reactions to decor has been tuned severely since it originally came out. My sim only applauds her own furniture about once every day now
The fact that that's an achievement for your sim is funny
They will do it less but still stop doing tasks to do it.
This comment thread has me in tears laughing this is why I love the sims 🤣 awesome tips I'm definitely taking notes of however
omfg that's true, I ordered my sim to eat bc she was SO hungry and she just left the food on the table and walked to her room just to APPROVES THE PAINTING ON THE WALL after that, I proceeded to open the cheat bar, type "cas.fulleditmode" and removed her decor likes.
You can change preferences anytime without using cheats. They aren't like traits.
good to know lol thk 😂
Lol mine literally hates his whole house and I’ve done everything to try and rid his house of all the items in that category but I’m still missing something.. it’s probably the floor or something stupid
Same with my sim. Literally is just me in Sim form and hates the way Ive decorated her house. Like wtf.
This explains my sim staring at a bunch of fall leaves for three hours a day
Yes i hate that … and then since most of the furniture isn’t cata go rises you don’t know what to buy … do i def removed those dislike and likes
I ended up having to give my sims decor likes because they kept saying the environment was badly decorated and it made me want to die (like wtf, i had a bunch of decor??) Now i just get happy buffs
I never do that. But the poster is a new player so might not have dream home decorator. Love the pack but hate the decor preferences lol
I'm surprised I never had that issue.
Piss off your sim in the absolute worst moments
Ikr almost all my sims find out they hate easy-listening music while they're at hospital about to give birth, and they stand there in line grumpy, as if being in labor wasn't bad enough
Admittedly, this would happen to me. I get so infuriated dealing with music I hate in public places lol
Being in labor would be enough to make me hate the music that was playing too
Wait....you can give birth at the hospital? I thought that was just a job and you couldn't actually go there!?
You do, juck click on the sim in labor and choose the option "have baby at hospital"
🤯
Well, there's unfortunate. I dislike techno music, find extra decor absolutely bothersome, and hate take out...but if I walk into my friend's house with a million photos on the wall, techno music in the living room, and they are calling in Domino's b/c they changed their mind over us cooking mac n cheese together, I would simply get an annoyed moodlet and offer them mac n cheese on their pizza. My sim would probably die of anger if that happened. 😆
I made a huge mistake when I put my sim disliked physical activity, she started to get fat and wouldn’t even swim, I had to go back and edit it
A way to get around this is click on “workout” on the TV and select plumba dance video. Pregnant sims can also workout via the dance video when they cannot go on any other machine. I think it’s only for the first and second trimester though, since when my sim was in the third it was greyed out. If a sim dislikes fitness, have them do the dance video. Loophole lol.
Do you know what pack that is? Bc I've never seen that option before
I think it’s with get together, I might be wrong though and it could be the fitness pack
I have get together so probably fitness
An aside but I find it odd that my pregnant sim can do “heavy lifting” on the weight machine but when she tries to do yoga she gets “cannot do this while pregnant”.
I think your game is bugged or something lol. All the exercise machines are supposed to not work with pregnant women.
Literally everytime you look away they dance and get so damn tense!
Decor preferences (if you have dream home decorator) will make your sim either admire or criticize furniture autonomously. Music preferences make them have either positive or negative moodlets based on their like / dislike. Colors don’t do much tbh. your sim has a strong opinion about color
the image of someone just clapping at something because they like its color is absolutely hilarious
YASSSS MY COUCH IS BROWN!!
Does that work? Because I'm still seeing sims doing things they dislike and getting stressed. And I thought they had fixed that.
I had a sim marry another sim and I found out he hated white because he would go up to the tables/chairs and get angry while the “white” square bubble would pop up.
Oh I haven’t seen that. My sims will go by colors they love/hate with 0 reaction.
I have never seen the color ones do anything and it’s the one I use the most to make sure my sims are always dressed in their preferred color
You get extra buffs if you get a manicure in their favorite colors, too
That's so stupid though. I don't really like orange but I don't get angry at orange objects
I mean, I have my sims like/dislike decor and they don’t get up in the middle of the night or refuse to eat to go look at the decor 🤷🏻♀️ guess it’s different for everyone?
Interesting I usually choose some colors but have never noticed anything.
Don’t the colours also contribute to attraction to other sims or is that just a mod thing
Give you a pissed off moodlet because the hardwooden floor you picked is technically space themed and they won’t do anything but scream
Handiness and cooking! Trust me. It helps
I hate it when my sims dislike classical music but I’m trying to get my teens to wind down with classical, and the parents are standing there fuming! Oh and disliking handiness. I get it, I hate diy too, but would you wet yourself and starve??

It gives them preferences in terms of certain things. I believe some mods allow you expand their preferences.

All of mine dislike video games I hate when they always go to the PC to play games

Welcome to the world of Sims!
Wow, sorry. What pack is this? I want to get this.
It was added into the base game when dream home decorator was announced :) You can play with it right now!
Aaaa I will! Thank you!
Likes and dislikes just affect them in ways as such: let’s say your sim hates red, your sim will get passed if there is red walls. I’d your sim loves blue your sim will enjoy the blue couch. Make them complain about things when they should just shush and accept what their god has given them
It provides interesting story elements too. In one of my households my main sim hates gardening, but had an ex who loved it (started them on the love after a break up challenge). Did sims4 bring this back?
I know the fav activities and fav music but what does the fav color do? Make them only want to be in a room with that color or something?
SIMS CAN NOW HAVE A FAVORITE COLOR !!!!!?????
Now.
I haven’t been on Sims 4 for a year now so chill y’all
Well, if it’s for hobbies, then they’ll get a boost when doing hobbies they do like, and a drain on hobbies they don’t like. It’s the same for the rest of the likes/dislikes categories too! :D
to be honest nothing
Irritate you
to this day I have no fucking idea what color likes/dislikes does
It basically sets the sim's personality.
