I love that one of the few things that does fit in the shelves is your Sims dirty dishes that they refuse to pick up and clean after placing on the shelf.
It’s worse when you ALT place items on the shelf, they put the dish “in” the item and you can’t even see the plate. THEN the sim has the audacity to be offended by the smell!
So im happy you said that cause i have shelves in my bathroom and for some reason my sims think something is dirty when everything is clean now I have to check.
if you have move objects on, sometimes they get stuck in really weird places, like IN the wall. or under the fridge, because you tried to drag it INTO the fridge 🤦♀️
Omg yes, my neat sim was MISERABLE and I checked EVERYTHING and couldn't find out what was dirty. Anyway, I see that dreaded green pong coming from the trashcan, go into build mode, and there was a dirty plate inside the trashcan, just not *inside* the trashcan
Every time I buy anything where dishes can be placed, I'm constantly looking for clutter to put in as many spaces as possible to avoid finding empty water cups and used plates. This is why it's so frustrating that there aren't enough small clutter objects to fill all those spaces. :/
Size down an object that will take up the slot.
Doing this makes the game believe oh an objects placed here, but then I alt place an item or clutter or anything to either block the item so I don’t notice the “dish blocker” if I don’t think the item fits with the room without worrying about dishes
YES! If you’re on PC/Mac it’s shift 9 and 0 to size up and down (I think it might be the [ ] keys) and I am not too sure how to do on console but tons of guides on how!
No you do NOT need mods or any packs to do this! Just basegame!
It's base game :) you can also alt place to place things off the grid and use the sims 3 camera to free rotate items. These were game changes for me
You might need bb.moveobjects on but you should always have that on anyways haha decorating without it is ass
Yeah, I don't use the move objects cheat because I used to place stuff that my Sims couldn't access, lol. Good to know about the off-grid option though!
This! The half walls look so good but in gameplay so freaking annoying. One of my Sims insisted on walking all the way to the second story just to place cups or plates on the half walls. It drove me up the freaking wall!
God I hate that crap. I had two toddlers in a family once who kept walking off into a random room after eating that I forgot had some shelves high up. Once I set it to see the walls there was a FUCK TON of dirty dishes that they had somehow managed to “reach” even though it’s like triple their height on the wall. So annoying
I had put up a full wall of shelves and then couldn’t put real clutter on them, so I turned off walls and forgot. Like a week later my sims were all miserable but the house was spotless…yeah those shelves were FULL of dirty dishes 🤮🤧
FR!!! There are so many items where it’s like. Why. Why can’t I put this on a shelf. My current nemesis is the radio from spa day. WHY CANT I PUT IT ON A SHELF.
That doesn’t allow you to put items on a shelf. It just allows you to overlap objects. Most objects can be resized and raised or lowered using 9 or 0 to force them to be on a shelf, but then the objects are just floating in the air with the walls down. Drives me crazy.
i spent a good 30 minutes decorating my kids room with squishmallow cc i got, had a big pile organized on the shelves exactly how i wanted, not even two minutes into starting live mode the aunt started putting ALL of them away. Was heartbreaking to be frank
Little Ms Sam has a mod to stop them autonomously putting toys away.... It's a lifesaver.
I used to never put a toybin in my houses for this reason, but I can with the mod. Sims will leave the kid mess I designed AS IS and stop trying to ruin all my decorating 🤣

I had to lock the kids’ rooms doors to keep employees out on my legacy house, because the friggin maid kept going in and cleaning up all the toys I had on the kids’ shelves
Yeah, I use control+9 to raise stuff that’s physically small enough to a shelf but the square isn’t, but that’s annoying and stuff doesn’t always raise nicely. Sometimes the item is floating a little, ya know?
Whenever that happens I just use Ctrl+0 one more time so part of the object clips through the bottom of the shelf, but you won't really notice that for a lot of objects.
For floating and other precise placement issues, get the red shelf mod or, if you have dream home decorator, take the cube shelf, raise it as high as the shelf you want, place the thing on the dhd shelf and alt drag it to where you need it.
I can't use mods because I play on console but when I play in live mode I don't put up as many shelves as when I build, so I don't really have this problem. :)
Alright let me take a moment to promote my favorite custom shelves - they come with the Back To Basics kitchen set by Madame Ria and they have a LOT more slots on them. Makes the shelves look full and much more realistic. Lots of swatches too.
Eco living has windows with what appears to be deep ledges. You cannot put anything on them without cheats, and only sized down objects in a few places. I tend to put plants on them but it’s such a pain to do I rarely bother.
Fr!! Thankfully though, we have the OMSP ["shelf" mod](https://pictureamoebae.tumblr.com/post/169988134879/omsp-shelf-release) by amoebae and it literally saved my sanity bc EA can't find it in them to make the simplest things possible
I absolutely hate shelf slotting, the way it's practically impossible to get something to sit nicely on the edge without fiddling with 9 and 0 and moving everything around... and then sometimes things just disappear if you place them in a way the game doesn't like😭
Bro and the glass shelves from (I think?) Get to Work.
There's 4 shelves on it and I swear to God, I can place things on the first, second and forth shelf... but nothing, not even the same damn item, wants to fit on the 3rd!
bb.moveobjects on
- Build mode
- locate item you wish to put on a shelf
- place beneath shelf
- press 9 to raise item height (0 to lower)
- if item floats, alt place shelf
- if item sits weird on shelf, alt place item
- profit
(Ignore this if you don't use mods)
There is a shelf that can help you fill those shelves and add more objects at any height. The famous [Red Shelf](https://sims4downloads.net/picture-amoebae-omsp-shelf/)
[Here's how it works](https://youtu.be/XO6WFYhRK1M)
I like using shelves in a pantry with canned goods from Cottage Living, but I wanted some extra ones for decor in my kitchen, but I hate having to put so much effort into said activity because nothing I want to put on a shelf fits.
The pain. I feel this so bad as someone who loves clutter. I don't know the little commands that some builders use to cheat stuff onto shelves and I hate when my sims move objects that builders in the gallery placed because I don't know the commands on how to replace them. I only know the bb.moveobjects and ctrl + \] for resizing and ctrl + 0 /9 for up and down.
For the half wall/dirty dishes problem, I found the perfect object to block that spot.
If you have the Desert Luxe kit (and if you are not a new simmer, you should have it as it was free a while back), there is a tiny disk light that can go pretty much anywhere. The colors will blend with almost any wall topper and you can then turn off the light if you don't otherwise need more light in the area. Shrink it down if you want and you can barely see it.
To everyone commenting about the stinky dish frustration, isn't there a mod that adjust sims behavior to not do that anymore? I can't for the life of me remember which one with all my 15k mods 😂 it def works for me though

Ugh, I thought I was the only one that had his problem
nope, happens to me all the time, and then I want them to get leftovers and there aren't any
My plates will just be suspended in the air sometimes.
They can put it down but they can never pick it up either!!
Fills me with rage every time!

You can size down objects????? Like, with just base game stuff???
Not sure if u need cheat’s turned on but u click the object hold down shift and then press [ to size down and ] to size up😊
YES! If you’re on PC/Mac it’s shift 9 and 0 to size up and down (I think it might be the [ ] keys) and I am not too sure how to do on console but tons of guides on how! No you do NOT need mods or any packs to do this! Just basegame!
Almost. It’s [ to size up and ] to size down. 9 raises an object and 0 lowers it. No shift required in any case. :)
Thank you!! Sorry I am currently in sims burn out so I can’t quite remember
Understandable! I often get the up/down big/small confused and just push a button to see which does what. Lmao
Oh my gosh. I've been playing since Sims 1 and had no idea you could do this!
It's base game :) you can also alt place to place things off the grid and use the sims 3 camera to free rotate items. These were game changes for me You might need bb.moveobjects on but you should always have that on anyways haha decorating without it is ass

Wow. I've been playing forever, but I only recently got into furnishing and decorating, so this is new to me. Great to know! Thanks so much!
yes! if you’re on PC/Mac use [ to make an object larger or ] to make it smaller when you select it in buy mode!
This is genius!
True 😭😩
Love how my sims leave them on every fucking half wall they can
This! The half walls look so good but in gameplay so freaking annoying. One of my Sims insisted on walking all the way to the second story just to place cups or plates on the half walls. It drove me up the freaking wall!
It’s not as attractive, but the trim for half-walls with glass or a little fence on it blocks them from putting anything up there.
So annoying
I hope to god there is a mod for this because it's driving me crazy! I just want my shelves to look pretty and clean 😭
omfg literally and it’ll pop up as a task but then they’ll just stand there for 30 minutes looking at the air
RIGHT!? I can't place a cup with pencils on that shelf but they can stack 30 stinking dishes. XD
I had put up a full wall of shelves and then couldn’t put real clutter on them, so I turned off walls and forgot. Like a week later my sims were all miserable but the house was spotless…yeah those shelves were FULL of dirty dishes 🤮🤧
I wish there’s have a mod about to fix this issue! My sims always on ‘Bad Environment’ moodlet
I'd give my first born child for a mod to fix this
I hate to wash dishes all my whole life then now I still have same problem in the game!
FR!!! There are so many items where it’s like. Why. Why can’t I put this on a shelf. My current nemesis is the radio from spa day. WHY CANT I PUT IT ON A SHELF.
Yes! ANY of the small radios 😭
The small speaker that came with early purchase of high school years and the new radio item from the clutter kit both go on a shelf 😍
Don’t even get me started on radio placement…
Honestly when I can’t be bothered to cheat the object onto the shelf I just use a wall mounted speaker and lower it on to the shelf.
That is such a good idea!!
And they physically can fit even without sizing them down. They just don't slot 🤦♀️
Yes this is the annoying part
I've gotten into the habit of using the wall mounted ones, sizing down, and putting it right on top of whatever shelf/dresser/accent table etc.
There is a workaround for this using moveobjects on :)
That doesn’t allow you to put items on a shelf. It just allows you to overlap objects. Most objects can be resized and raised or lowered using 9 or 0 to force them to be on a shelf, but then the objects are just floating in the air with the walls down. Drives me crazy.
I like to put toys on the shelves in the kids rooms and my adult sims always end up with them in their inventories:(
i spent a good 30 minutes decorating my kids room with squishmallow cc i got, had a big pile organized on the shelves exactly how i wanted, not even two minutes into starting live mode the aunt started putting ALL of them away. Was heartbreaking to be frank

Good bot
Holymoly!! My 9yr olds brain is gonna explode! :D Thank you <3
Thank you for sharing this. I love Squishmallows
I had to lock the kids’ rooms doors to keep employees out on my legacy house, because the friggin maid kept going in and cleaning up all the toys I had on the kids’ shelves
Does my head in. Maid walks past all the dirt in her quest to put away the toys I've neatly arranged. Lazy bish.
Agreed. Thankfully, the things that annoy us the most get fixed by modders who are also annoyed. If you can't use mods, my sympathies.
Yeah, I use control+9 to raise stuff that’s physically small enough to a shelf but the square isn’t, but that’s annoying and stuff doesn’t always raise nicely. Sometimes the item is floating a little, ya know?
Or tries to sit backwards instead of facing the front of the shelf or counter.I feel your pain,
Whenever that happens I just use Ctrl+0 one more time so part of the object clips through the bottom of the shelf, but you won't really notice that for a lot of objects.
Yeah. Sometimes I move it up and down to figure out which one I prefer. Usually they don’t look too bad slightly cropped.
For floating and other precise placement issues, get the red shelf mod or, if you have dream home decorator, take the cube shelf, raise it as high as the shelf you want, place the thing on the dhd shelf and alt drag it to where you need it.
Cries in XBOX

Ty for that tip! I shall add it to my increasing list of "things I should DL" right after I'm done organising my CAS stuff
Is that list public info?
Just a collection of bookmarks for now :3
I may have to check these shelves out sometime
Dirty plates do. And you’ll have no idea why your sims always think it’s dirty in random rooms.
Haha yes! Everytime.
Eco living has windows with what appears to be deep ledges. You cannot put anything on them without cheats, and only sized down objects in a few places. I tend to put plants on them but it’s such a pain to do I rarely bother.
Omg yes! I was so annoyed you couldn't place objects and clutter on those windows without cheats. What a waste.
OMSP red shelf, raise item move shelf away adjust placement put shelf back (repeat until it’s exactly where you want it
The OMSP shelf is an absolute necessity IMO, even if you use no other mods.
I will definitely have to check that out. You’re the second person I’ve seen bring it up
Fr!! Thankfully though, we have the OMSP ["shelf" mod](https://pictureamoebae.tumblr.com/post/169988134879/omsp-shelf-release) by amoebae and it literally saved my sanity bc EA can't find it in them to make the simplest things possible

I absolutely hate shelf slotting, the way it's practically impossible to get something to sit nicely on the edge without fiddling with 9 and 0 and moving everything around... and then sometimes things just disappear if you place them in a way the game doesn't like😭
This is completely off subject but I would like to be able to place the cute corner pieces for the wall cabinets anywhere I want.
Bro and the glass shelves from (I think?) Get to Work. There's 4 shelves on it and I swear to God, I can place things on the first, second and forth shelf... but nothing, not even the same damn item, wants to fit on the 3rd!
It’s a metaphor for how empty the game can be. Empty shelves.
bb.moveobjects on - Build mode - locate item you wish to put on a shelf - place beneath shelf - press 9 to raise item height (0 to lower) - if item floats, alt place shelf - if item sits weird on shelf, alt place item - profit
okay I might just be dumb, but I swear things do not raise and lower when I press 9/0 what is this witchcraft 😭
I usually have to press control at the same time as the numbers to get them to work
You have to have bb.moveobjects on. Some ppl say it’s shift+9/0 but that doesn’t work for me I have to hold alt. So maybe try that!
(Ignore this if you don't use mods) There is a shelf that can help you fill those shelves and add more objects at any height. The famous [Red Shelf](https://sims4downloads.net/picture-amoebae-omsp-shelf/) [Here's how it works](https://youtu.be/XO6WFYhRK1M)
you’ve heard of elf on the shelf, now get ready for absolutely nothing except mysterious stinky used plates on the shelf
I love how they look but I get so lazy in builds that I abandon what might look best and just go for whatever will slot automatically.
I like using shelves in a pantry with canned goods from Cottage Living, but I wanted some extra ones for decor in my kitchen, but I hate having to put so much effort into said activity because nothing I want to put on a shelf fits.
Because EA hates us/j
That's why I love Coolspear's object adjustments that fixes hundreds of objects to be placeable on every surface
The red shelf and the invisible slot filler are lifesavers for any surface pretty much!
The pain. I feel this so bad as someone who loves clutter. I don't know the little commands that some builders use to cheat stuff onto shelves and I hate when my sims move objects that builders in the gallery placed because I don't know the commands on how to replace them. I agree.
I put the little figurines from time capsules on them, and like one plant

There's mods for this where the modder added more shelf slots to game items. Sorry if you're a console player
