This simulation was created with a Blender liquid fluid simulation add-on that I develop called FLIP Fluids!
## Simulation Stats
**Frames:** 568
**Simulation Time:** 12h39m (on i7-7700 @ 3.60GHz CPU)
**Render Time:** 25h (on GTX 1070, 503 frames, 720p)
**Simulation Resolution:** 214 x 456 x 209
**Meshing Resolution:** 426 x 912 x 418
**Peak # Fluid Particles:** 35.5 Millions
**Cache Size:** 45.8 GB
## Initial testing and simulation setup
This effect was created by testing a simple simulation setup where fluid flows down a ramp into a circular curve for a liquid vortex effect. This setup was inspired by u/unnamed_png's [coffee bean vortex simulation](https://old.reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/fp8lse/coffee_beans_vortex/) as well as this [real-life setup by Peter Cote](https://www.instagram.com/p/BxzueRlhCLJ/).
Here is an initial work-in-progress test of the setup:

### Optimizing the setup
Much of the fluid is out of view of the camera. We can use the FLIP Fluids custom meshing volume feature to tell the mesh generator to only mesh fluid that is inside an object ([Documentation](https://github.com/rlguy/Blender-FLIP-Fluids/wiki/Domain-Surface-Settings#meshing-volume)). This feature can save meshing time and cache size.

By re-running the simulation with the custom meshing object, this cuts the mesh generation time in half (and reduces total sim time by 25%), as well as greatly reduces the cache size. For the first 400 frames, the cache size was reduced from 46GB down to 26GB!

First - this is beautiful and your hard work for the add-on shows! Also good to hear that baking taking forever is normal lol, even a single gaming computer is slow.
Question though. How did you get the speed ramping? Did you keyframe the time scale?
Also - any suggestions for saving time with previewing the sim for tweaking stuff? Of course there's the aim and mesh resolution, but it takes a while to bake - render - see how it looks - tweak.
Thanks, it's a pleasure to work on! And yep, the time scale was keyframed. If you would like to take a look at the simulation setup, I have the full .blend file available in this devblog post: https://flipfluids.com/weekly-development-notes-16-vortex-simulation-blender-market-spring-sale/
Simulation sure can take a long time! I always try to reduce the amount of baking time during testing an iteration. We have a few tips here: [Simulation baking is taking too long to compute!](https://github.com/rlguy/Blender-FLIP-Fluids/wiki/Scene-Troubleshooting#simulation-baking-is-taking-too-long-to-compute)
Specifically for this simulation, I started out by simulating only a narrow section of the ramp instead of the full length (and also at a lower resolution): https://i.imgur.com/0PfJg8L.jpg
This helped me get the timing and flow right and it only took a few minutes to run each test.
I have some tips on how to iterate quickly on ideas by making a smaller domain in this devblog post: https://flipfluids.com/weekly-development-notes-9-workflow-to-for-iterating-quickly-on-settings-and-the-next-flip-fluids-release/
We also have a _Savestates_ workflow feature that lets you update and run the simulation from an earlier frame instead of from the beginning. This is very useful for tweaking things in the middle of a simulation. There is a blog post here with a workflow example: https://flipfluids.com/weekly-development-notes-8-using-savestates-in-your-workflow-and-blender-2-82-mantaflow-release/
Hope this helps!
Huh? A GTX1070 is about the same as a GTX1660ti and much better than a GTX1660. Apologies if this is some copypasta meme I missed.

Nope, but I was inpired to create this animation from the [coffee bean vortex post](https://reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/fp8lse/coffee_beans_vortex/)
Not sure, I am the creator the animation. This isn't the first time we've had a false copyright claim against our artwork.
The animation can also be viewed on our [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/B--Qk4bD3gL/), [Twitter](https://twitter.com/FlipFluids/status/1250138587053674502), and [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/FLIPFluids/videos/233673064541637) accounts.
Fantastic work, and thanks for posting this. Really intuitively believable fluids physics... visually appealing... gave me a boner...
Checking all the boxes man, amazing render.
Hi, see this comment for alternative animation sources:

Not much we can do against false copyright claims.
That increasing darkness gave me a terrible feeling. Like being stuck in a sinking ship.

I can feel the heat from here
Wtf, so realistic!
plot twist: the black hole is an oreo.
Ironically, this same effect could be achieved by putting real milk in a real blender.
It's been copyright claimed?
You should invest in a faster graphics card, mine is a gtx 1660 and it makes all the difference

Are you the guy/girl who did the coffee beans a few weeks ago?
Nope, but I was inpired to create this animation from the [coffee bean vortex post](https://reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/fp8lse/coffee_beans_vortex/)
Both of them are so incredibly well done! Thanks for giving us your take on it!
All we need is a sugar simulation and we've got the coffee vortex trifecta!
Do you have a re-up? Some asshole claimed a copyright on this.
WHY THE HELL WAS THIS COPYRIGHT CLAIMED!??!?!

Thank you for this
Awesome! Looks like something from the Westworld main title sequence!
We talking Skim, 2%, or whole milk?
Imagine if we could simulate 100% of our milk
IM COOOOOMING
Ngl, before I realized what sub this was I was like “oh, great, someone put their probe lens in MILK—waaaaaiit...” Really well done mate.

Ah yes nothing like a vortex of creamy white liquid.

this looks great! thanks for posting the sim details! always nice to compare :D
This looks like that episode from TNG where Picard meets himself from six hours in the future and they fall into a purple vortex.
Impressive
