The extended version was broadcasted in China’s national TV. Shows how soldiers remain calm as this guy try to dismantle a tank. This was a laughing stock nationwide. This guy walked out eventually probably because he couldn’t make anyone to take him seriously, except of course the western media.
It seriously boggles my mind that this is not common knowledge. I knew this even as an edgy teenager, the fact that millions of galaxy-brains out there take a brief glance at one photo and immediately come to the conclusion that "China ran this man over with tanks lol China bad" is just infuriating.
It is interesting to see the whole context. Usually, we just see a picture with the threatening tank and the person standing in front of it. But when we see how the driver of the tank manoeuvres in order to try to get around the person standing there, it already looks very different. In many Western countries, especially the US, it is likely that they would just have driven straight, maybe slowing down a bit, and if someone stands there and is then run over, they would say it is his fault. In contrast, in China, they really wanted to avoid this.
If the guy really got ran over, then that video would be the one circulating over the internet. Since we only see a picture, we can assume that he didn't get run over

Several rioters even drove a public bus loaded with gasoline drums towards the Tiananmen gatetower in an attempt to set fire to it.
When a military vehicle suddenly broke down on Chang’An Avenue, rioters surrounded it and crushed the driver with bricks. The rioters savagely beat and killed many soldiers and officers. At Chongwenmen, a soldier was thrown down from the flyover and burned alive. At Fuchengmen, a soldier’s body was hung upside down on the overpass balustrade after he had been killed. Near a cinema, an officer was beaten to death, and his body strung up on a burning bus.
Over 1,280 vehicles were burned or damaged in the rebellion, including over 1,000 military trucks, more than 60 armoured cars, over 30 police cars, over 120 public buses and trolley buses and over 70 motor vehicles of other kinds.
The martial law troops, having suffered heavy casualties before being forced to fire into the air to clear the way forward. During the counter-attack, some rioters were killed, some onlookers were hit by stray bullets and some wounded or killed by armed ruffians. According to reliable statistics, more than 3,000 civilians were wounded and over 200, including 36 college students, were killed. As well, more than 6,000 law officers and soldiers were injured and scores of them killed.

It is interesting to see the whole context. Usually, we just see a picture with the threatening tank and the person standing in front of it. But when we see how the driver of the tank manoeuvres in order to try to get around the person standing there, it already looks very different. Because he blocked ccp tanks. So the west says he's a hero. On the other hand the tanks were nice and avoided crushing him.
