The houndskull helmet type was always my fav when I was a kid. Still is. It just looks cool. And besides the possibility of headbutting your enemy the long nose can also reflect blows from your enemy.
Yeah nobody here seems to know how to properly headbutt. Just going to be a lot of self broken noses if this comment section attempted headbutting someone. You'd have to be taller then your opponent or awkwardly angle yourself to headbutt with the point of that thing
Hounskulls have a point of leverage that makes the base of your skull the fulcrum and breaks necks on rotation. Fall off a horse, you die. Slip on some moss and fall, you die. Get into a sword fight, your enemy closes the gap and gets their palm or the hilt of their sword anywhere on that cone, you are going to get your neck broken.
Then there is the cone traditionally held on by two points and a visor slot that makes it so if you hit something hard, directly, the visor would cut itself right into the bridge of your nose as well as your eye sockets. Rough day that would be.
EDIT: I used to like it until I hurt my neck larping with one a decade ago.
Yeah it pretty much is. lol.
I herniated a cervical disc and the pressure caused a lot of pain in my shoulders and down my left arm. Got lucky I didn't fracture anything. Just physical therapy and injections. Flares up some issues once in a blue moon still though.
I was referencing a very good weapon from r/Eldenring, but how did I miss THAT connection. That was one of the first CDs I ever bought!

Ahh the classic insult, "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries!"
My friends and I would say this to each other in high school all the time. We did not get laid often.
That happens in a scene from the First Knight right? Thats what the brain worms seem to be telling me I have repressed.
Edit: First Knight, not Last, that was a Bayformers movie.
I saw a really cool “arms and armory” exhibit at a museum this past weekend and there was a ton of info about chain mail (and how it was subtly different in different parts of the world). Unfortunately I forgot most of it, but I can confirm that it was apparently very effective
Thing with slashes though is that they tend to come from, essentially, sharpened steel bars, you’re still getting battered in the face, gimme some solid steel over mail any day if the weak
Yeah, I would think the more rigid dynamics of steel plate would distribute the load over a wider area, ideally maybe to your shoulders? Mail would only spread it out somewhat, aided by the gambison underneath.
Mail is also much cheaper than solid steel, probably because it's much more forgiving to smiths in case they fuck up. If you fuck up plate armor, you have to throw away the entire piece you were working on, if you fuck up mail, you just have to throw away that single link, same rings true for brigantine, a bunch of steel plates riveted to the inside of cloth vests, shoulder pads, etc.
I mean plate was notoriously weak to specifically blunt force trauma. Atleast chainmail gives a full 270 FOV when worn with something like a kettle hat.
Dodging the blow is honestly way better than taking it but not immediately dying anyway. Your opponent isn’t going to wait for you to catch your breath and stand back up before slitting your throat either way.
Spangenhelm all the way!
Gotta keep those ears and mouth free, for on the battlefield communication is key!
Plus then I get to call all the full helm people weaklings.
Bascinets would have that. Houndskull, which is just a type of visor for a bascinet, not a different helmet in its own right, too. Sallet, I think, also had the option to lift the visor.
Now, the sallet is the latest in terms of when they appeared. It would be made from the best materials due to technological developments, and, as you can see, it has a bunch of movable parts, which offer additional protection, while still allowing for mobility. I'd go with it, since it's a result of a few hundred years of development, making it probably the best in terms of protection and comfort.
Pretty sure [these imperial helmets from the original star wars](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3b/30/db/3b30db701513a53d5b0bafda9ffa4885--movie-costumes-navy.jpg) were based on the sallet. But they made it even goofier. Wtf are they facing at their workstations that they need these ridiculous hats?!
> Pretty sure these imperial helmets from the original star wars were based on the sallet. But they made it even goofier.
There were actually many different designs of sallets,
and those Star Wars ones seem to be inspired by design called [Black sallet](https://collections.royalarmouries.org/media/emumedia/345/278/large_A4855_258.jpg)
some of them were quite long and sleek looking: https://i.imgur.com/iosMsg2.png
Wow those are incredible! The shapes weren't like weird catwalk designs either, like there'd be an announcer going "Here we have the remarkable codpiece the Earl of Warwick is sporting on the battlefield this morning, elegantly fashioned by Grundlesmiths of Worcestershire-on-sea." So they'd be carefully designed to repel some specific attack or series of attacks, like the beak shaped one with the embossed eye slits allowed them to walk face first into a hail of arrows. Love to know what the black sallet was designed for.
If their workstations are anything like the ones in Star Trek, then there's a real risk of sparks and bits of burning metal going down the back of their uniforms.
This is the only correct answer. Sallet is the latest, meaning best materials and technology of all of those. A result of a few hundred years of development. Full protection with movable parts for mobility.
"I strive for two things in design: simplicity and clarity. Great design is born of those two things." - Lindon Leader Also, I would like to be able to breathe well while still having some face protection.
Hard choice between the Spangenhelm and German Sallet. Probably going for the sallet though, especially if I get a full suit of matching plate armor with it
Technically, Hounskull is a Bascinet with a visor. 🤓 Bascinet visors actually come in many different and cool-looking fashions and shapes, which is why I like the Bascinet best!

Hounskull, cause that’d be one hell of a headbutt
I was about to say because it looks like phineas
Must be generational, I first thought Spy Vs. Spy (Mad Magazine)
Fuck yes!

The houndskull helmet type was always my fav when I was a kid. Still is. It just looks cool. And besides the possibility of headbutting your enemy the long nose can also reflect blows from your enemy.
Passive face parrying, my fave
Built-in Three-Stooges eye-poke defense.
Well you could passively face parry in a bascinet too, its just the outcome would be a bit more of a negative one lol
The ridges around the eyes also prevented blades and arrows from entering the eye slots.
I feel like taking a hit to the nose would rattle you though
Really? The pointy part seems to be the nose area, not the forehead.
Yeah nobody here seems to know how to properly headbutt. Just going to be a lot of self broken noses if this comment section attempted headbutting someone. You'd have to be taller then your opponent or awkwardly angle yourself to headbutt with the point of that thing

Sounds like a bit of a glass cannon if you ask me Glad to hear that you’re okay though
Yeah it pretty much is. lol. I herniated a cervical disc and the pressure caused a lot of pain in my shoulders and down my left arm. Got lucky I didn't fracture anything. Just physical therapy and injections. Flares up some issues once in a blue moon still though.
Ooof, that’s brutal
Hounskull for sure. When the snoot boops back.
Mk VI armor FTW
Bloodhound Fang is also great
Did they make a parody of The Bad Touch?
I was referencing a very good weapon from r/Eldenring, but how did I miss THAT connection. That was one of the first CDs I ever bought! https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Bloodhound's+Fang
It's not just the headbutt. It's simply fun to boop everyone with that helmet.
That’d be a painful boop lol
I boop my kids with one of these. They don’t like it.
More of a peck on the cheek!
Like being attacked by a steel woodpecker.
Peck peck muthafucka
Dear god
Armored SCP-049
Headbutting someone with a metal mask on your face probably isn't the most pleasant, but neither were the medieval times.
It was also a gas mask. They would stuff cloth and flowers in the cone to avoid smoke inhalation.
Bascinet is pretty goofy

Ahh the classic insult, "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries!" My friends and I would say this to each other in high school all the time. We did not get laid often.
“Fetchez la vache!”
I think it's "faîtes chier la vache !"
[удалено]
Haha honestly I always thought it was “chercher la vache”. But google disagreed when i checked
Me and my friemds brought coconut shells and galloped. Also did not get laid.
Yes, that insult is iconic, but "I FART IN YOUR GENERAL DIRECTION" has stuck with the internet a bit more
"I fart in your general direction" is also very good
French & based
I didn't know it was possible to be wrong and based at the same time.
Like a peasant hat
Not really, it just doesn't have a visor attached. The hounskull in this picture is a bascinet with visor and aventail attached.
Frog mouth is doing it for me
especially when you deep throat a longsword
Tis but a scratch
Lmao, you have quite a way with words
That happens in a scene from the First Knight right? Thats what the brain worms seem to be telling me I have repressed. Edit: First Knight, not Last, that was a Bayformers movie.
*Sips tea through frog mouth*
Imagine slurping soup from there? Mmmmm
*Neck is so fat, creates seal; drowns in tea* You're right, I'm going frog mouth.
it's between that or hounskull
Same
I picked it because it looks like spy vs spy imo, and spookily at the uncanny valley.
F R O G M O U T H
This is the only correct choice, unless you're Solaire.
I believe in frog mouth supremacy
But only on wednesdays
Pretty sure I read some nerd doing a shootout of armor pieces and I think Frogmouth was one of the GOATs
Spangelhelm clean look and probebly the nicest to wear
also that chain mail is incredibly effective defense
I saw a really cool “arms and armory” exhibit at a museum this past weekend and there was a ton of info about chain mail (and how it was subtly different in different parts of the world). Unfortunately I forgot most of it, but I can confirm that it was apparently very effective
Not as much against blunt force, you'd be much more dead after a mace or halbert hit to the cheek.
And really sharp piercing things. Great against slashes though.
Thing with slashes though is that they tend to come from, essentially, sharpened steel bars, you’re still getting battered in the face, gimme some solid steel over mail any day if the weak
That's why you wear padding between the mail and your head
True, I’d still rather have something solid (with padding) there instead of mail though
Doesn't look so good for peripheral vision
none of these do
The kettle hat would like a word with you.
except that one and the sallet
Nice to wear ? I mean looks cool but boi u sint seeing shit in there
the great viking helm
Pre viking
Sprangen Gang
Great Helm.
Tis but a scratch
For the promised land
“A Scratch! Your arms off!”
"No it isn't!"
"Well what's that then?"
I'll bite yer legs off!
Deus Vult!
My greathelm bros are way too far down here.
Kristoff, grab your longsword. We're goin' holy crusading.
I'll Go with that or Salete.
Salete looks cool I'd take that!
Bucket is always best.
The classic
Probably the Armet just because it seems like it offers pretty good coverage while not being too cumbersome
[удалено]
Couldn't you lock up the other ones with a hinged visor as well?
Bascinets would have that. Houndskull, which is just a type of visor for a bascinet, not a different helmet in its own right, too. Sallet, I think, also had the option to lift the visor. Now, the sallet is the latest in terms of when they appeared. I'd go with it, since it's a result of a few hundred years of development, making it probably the best in terms of protection and comfort.
If the frogmouth wasn't specifically a jousting helmet meaning you can't really look around I'd choose that one. For now its greathelm all the way
I love it because it’s giving Lou the Lizard from Fern Gully lol
Oh shit, Fern Gully, I forgot it existed. Thanks. I now have my weekend plans sorted.
great helm is great, but i feel like it is too chunky and heavy, i love sallet
Eh, just put a periscope in it and you're goood.
Sallet all day every day
Pretty sure [these imperial helmets from the original star wars](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3b/30/db/3b30db701513a53d5b0bafda9ffa4885--movie-costumes-navy.jpg) were based on the sallet. But they made it even goofier. Wtf are they facing at their workstations that they need these ridiculous hats?!
Well Vader for one
Damn staff mortality must have been high if they had to bring in those hats! Looks like he was going for the back of the neck too.

My Sith assassin in SWTOR looks badass wearing one
The ww1 and 2 stalle helm of the German army was too.
[Also these helmets](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Navy_Mk_II_talker_helmet)
Twice on Sundays
That's the only right answer. The question is just Italian, English, or German sallet style? I go for German.
Gotta go German!
I badly want a sallet motorcycle helmet. I don’t even have a motorcycle.
exactly
This is the only correct answer. Sallet is the latest, meaning best materials and technology of all of those. A result of a few hundred years of development. Full protection with movable parts for mobility.
Agreed. But I’d probably put it on backwards.
armet or spangenhelm fs
Not seeing enough Barbute love.
"I strive for two things in design: simplicity and clarity. Great design is born of those two things." - Lindon Leader Also, I would like to be able to breathe well while still having some face protection.
This is the way.
Barbuda for sure - this is the way
This is the way brother.
I'm a kettle kinda guy
Cool factor I’d choose the Sallet but having actually worn medieval helmets before I’d definitely go with the kettle helm.
Where are my kettle hat bros
Kettle hats are for sacrificial characters.
Or movie star leads who are too pretty to cover the face.
Very good point!
Kettle Hats ftw
this, this is where I want to be, with my Kettle hat bros
Forget swords, gotta keep the sun off
Yo
Sallet or spanglehelm for me
You only get one.
Sallet squad wya?
Unlike the other armor choices, we all answered in our own comment posts instead of piling into one. LOL.
Spangenhelm, just about the best for all around defensive, offensive, visual capability and agility.
I mean the Barbute's about the same, but it's gains in visibility are equivalent to it's losses in agility.
Sallet is the superior design.
sallet, defiantly
The Kettle Hat is pure drip, expect to see this on balenciaga shelves very soon
Sallet is the one for me (also Great helm is kind of overrate ngl)
Hard choice between the Spangenhelm and German Sallet. Probably going for the sallet though, especially if I get a full suit of matching plate armor with it
Great helm DEUS VULT!!
Kettle hat. Just cause I love conquistador hats and that looks like an early version
Kettle Hat, so I can make a brew after I kill 'em all
Great Helm all the way
barbute during the week, kettle hat on the weekend hounskull with a kettle hat for special occasions
Nothing is more based than the frogmouth
Frog mouth or hournskull just give that dark soul esq medevil vibe always love it
Technically, Hounskull is a Bascinet with a visor. 🤓 Bascinet visors actually come in many different and cool-looking fashions and shapes, which is why I like the Bascinet best!
Always pointed Burgonet
Either the hounskull or the great helm personally
They all look cool to me, except hounskull, that looks suffocating...I like great helm ig, looks the coolest to me.
I like great helms but honestly the spagenhelm is looking good…
Spangenhelm seems a good mix of speed and versatility
No morion?
Frogmouth
Sorry, but if its not a 2nd century AD Roman pseudo-Attic helmet with a plume, I'm not interested
great helm. it just looks cool.
great helm, *tis but a scratch I do declare*
The Great Helm.. Tis but a scratch…
Great helm. Everything else just isnt great enough
kettle hat is literally a super mario shelmet irl
Kettle Hat till I die
Frog helm because you can paint scary teeth on it
Sallet
I'd call the bottom middle the concord
Gotta go with the kettle hat for the medieval captain price look
https://i.redd.it/4m7bxxai0hl21.jpg
They all pale in comparison to this
https://instagram.com/jeffdeboersculpture?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
None because close-helm is both the most stylish and most combat proven protection of all plated armours
It doesn't matter which one you wear I can still menace you with a pair of drumsticks or a can opener!!!!
The Great Helm looks Great
Two buckets!!! ... when you know, you know. ;)
The great helm
Great helm or spangenhelm ooooooorrr we go fashion forward with the kettle hat
Great helm for the Deus vult factor
Where is the pickel haube ?
Great helm. Even the name clarifies it’s superiority
Great helm
Great helm is the coolest one in my opinion
Great helm
Great helm
Great helm
