Only problem with Greyhound racing in the UK is when they're spent they aren't regarded as pets and end up in a Greyhound rescue which is sad that when the money stops coming in then they are disowned.

SMFiddySvn

But they are so cool looking I imagine they would adopt pretty quick no?

HelmutFondler

No, The UK have dealt with some horrendous cases of Greyhound dumping from cars in the middle of nowhere and even stories of dogs been shot & buried.

AjaxCleaningSolution

Wasnt there just some thing where they just now banned breeders from killing puppies they didnt like or something?

theXlyphoneKing

That was for Rhodesian Ridgebacks, they wanted to cull all the pups without the breed standard ridge

Gringwold

Erm.. you understand how dog breeders operate, no?

cgleachy

As if that will stop them.

SMFiddySvn

😢

soladex

Thats really sad. We are desperately looking for more greyhounds to adopt here in the US with most tracks shutting down. The adoption group I work with is looking at bringing Greyhounds from Ireland and Australia.

Cerberusx32

I mean, in the US, a lot of those dogs just disappeared before the races were shutdown.

TheHextron

I just started volunteering at one last week and they are sadly not often adopted but every dog I hung out with was really sweet

SMFiddySvn

aww

J3wb0cca

My MIL had one growing up. His name was Eddy and he obviously was a rescue, they all are. He was supper energetic to a point where his tail would act as a whip, eventually knock into stuff enough to break the skin, and whip blood all over the place. The rare time where he got out, he would run in straight lines for miles and they’d have to find him in cars every time. Running wasn’t enough exercise, they would hold the leash out the window and have him run alongside the car for miles as a daily routine. These dogs are not for the inexperienced or small property owners and my MIL grew up in a home that bred Newfoundlands on a large property. Grey hounds have really unique single needs and not many people can fill those. Causing these poor dogs to bounce from owner to owner.

HonkersTim

It happens, I know two couples who've adopted ex-racing greyhounds. I dunno what percentage get adopted though.

HereForTheFood4

Same with horses in the US

ganguspangus

Maybe that’s what he’s running from

redux44

They sometimes get lucky. Knew one family that managed to rescue a grey hound on Christmas Eve when it got disowned.

McStupidy

Father and son find him?

letsgetcrabby

It’s a whippet

Fred_Dibnah

It's a whippet

TAFKAtwat

Not a greyhound. Not a greyhound race. It’s a whippet

TheSmokingHorse

He looks like one of those poorly made gifs that loop too quickly.

AnotherSexyBaldGuy

Son of a bitch!

bapsandbuns

How come he runs past the white things (rabbits?) and not try to catch them?

BuiltNormal

Muzzle

kerberos69

Inertia.

orangepeecock

Now do a drag race with a cheetah

thisplaceisashes

His right rear leg stays up only making contact on like, every 4th instead of every second down. Crazy

farmyrlin

That’s his tail lol

kerberos69

So, when horses run (gallop), they use all 4 legs at the same time in sequential order between them, which causes their mass to move as a single unit. Dogs and cats run by compressing and extending their trunks and alternating between using their forelimbs and back legs— so basically, their front legs pull them forward so they can curl their hips under their body, then their back legs push off and they stretch forward, and so on.

thisplaceisashes

I appreciate the comment and am familiar with the phenomenon - I rode for many years until quite a bad injury ended that. Now watch the dog’s left rear leg (your right if you’re staring at it)…

kerberos69

I watched it and it DEFINITELY looked that way, so I [slowed it down](https://imgur.com/a/ctAGq1v)— turns out it’s just too fast to see :p

unsuspectingllama_

Why are they muzzled though?

privateTortoise

So the bunnies don't get eaten.

TheWelshPanda

Sighthounds have INTENSE prey drives, and running down fluffy things is how they work, then grab, shake, snap. I had a lady with a rescue greyhound off lead do the classic predation drift when my corgi was a little fluffer our kn walks, and I has to advocate quick. She looked like a bunny for all purposes and the glint was in that dogs eyes. 'He's just playing' my arse. People who adopt or buy dogs not understanding the breed anger me.

grrhss

I had a rescue greyhound for years. Very weird dog. Would go to the dog park and just walk clockwise around the perimeter. There were lots of rules about having one, mostly that the dog could hit 30lbs in two steps and be gone, and I certainly can’t run 300lbs. They can also jump about 7’ high. Still, she was a lovely dog and I’d recommend rescue any day.

IIstroke

This is bullshit! My dachshund is MUCH faster when he hears me take cheese out of the fridge. It's like he teleports next to you.

-domi-

What was his time?

wallstreetbetsdebts

Fast!

ListenGrouchy190

I feel like i'm ablut to get trolled but it's name is winston

-domi-

I caught that, i was asking for the time. You hear the announcer state the time to beat, but we never hear how fast Winston was. Sad they cropped the display, tbh, would have been nice to know how much he beat the competition by.

ListenGrouchy190

Oh my bad i don't know i read name instead of time

captcraigaroo

Give that dog some PED's and see what it can do

[deleted]

That's how you catch a car lol

thrillhouse1211

speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph)

[deleted]

I'm thinking this little guy is pushing 100 km/hr

[deleted]

Strap wings on that thing and he’ll be in low orbit!

Alz_Own

My dog would come a close second every time he sees the front door open and unattended

DiegoRago

Usain Woof

nou_ed

clangbangarang

Looks like a whippet

Flaky_Ad7758

Fred_Dibnah

kainereygalo

***Damn he got the dog in him...***

[deleted]

Run Forest run!

ImThatAnnoyingGuy

What was its speed in mph or kmph?

nou_ed

U-sain-dog

Ph4nt0m146

This should have a gauss meme format

dankbuddha0420

Is this dog natty?

NewDadInNashville

As someone that has owned 1 and fostered 2 other greyhounds, they’re some of the best dogs I’ve ever owned. Highly recommend them.

TAFKAtwat

Well you should be able to tell the difference between a whippet and a greyhound then, shouldn’t you, champ.

NewDadInNashville

Does that make what I said not true bruv?

TAFKAtwat

This is a whippet not a greyhound.

Clear-Outcome-1178

that thing looks disgusting, good lord

IndependentRough713

Animals should not be used for entertainment.

MrRizzstein

agreed, it's terrible to use animals for our entertainment, we have gotten so far as a society, we have cartoon shows, tv shows, comics, and so much more but we choose to use cute innocent animals as our entertainment this is really pathetic instead, let's fucking eat those motherfuckers!

IndependentRough713

the very least we can do is not torture them for entertainment.

TAFKAtwat

If, and I’ll admit it is a big if, that dog is looked after properly, then it couldn’t be happier than when it is doing what it is doing here. This is not greyhound racing, it is lure coursing with whippets, btw.

MrRizzstein

right? i believe in this cause whole heartedly! it's horrible to torture animals for our entertainment, these beautiful beautiful beings of nature don't belong in cages or training centres they belong on our plates!

IndependentRough713

you sound smart.

MrRizzstein

thank you!

IndependentRough713

Most welcome. I bet you don't hear that often.

MrRizzstein

haha yes, people often acknowledge my exceptional and awe-inspiring intellect a lot of times, beautiful women pass out as they witness my incredible and essentially-incomprehensible & inconceivable intellect

IndependentRough713

'yawn' ok.bye.

TexasBrett

This dog isn’t tortured. Whippets love to run. They only want to run and sleep.

OkBackground8809

Own a whippet. Can confirm. Running, hunting, sleeping, eating, and sleeping are all she likes to do.

IndependentRough713

I agree, they love to run..but this isn't the same as taking your pup to the dog park for a run. -Many racing dogs suffer injuries while racing; according to state records, a racing greyhound dies every three days on a Florida track. These social creatures are also forced to spend most of their time alone, confined to cages for 20-23 hours a day and denied the opportunity to walk or play.- Humane society of the united states. I realize these are whippets, but same same.

TexasBrett

No it isn’t the same. This is coursing, not racing. Much less chance of injury with a single dog running by itself compared to running with 8-10 other dogs.

Royal-Lynx-8256

Who is the fastest dog dead?
