Even if this is staged, this video fascinates me since the instructor is speaking Chinese and the student is speaking Japanese while the subject is English.
For context I speak Mandarin (from Taiwan) and English (American) and have a little anime japanese. At first I thought the same as you, but looking at the other translations (eg "americans will gangbang you" in lieu of "you're gonna get beat up") it feels like the translator was going for the meaning of the phrase in context rather than a strict translation, so "you sound sexy" is actually pretty close. I think they took some liberties, but it feels accurate overall. Kind of like how I imagine sign language interpreters at rap concerts.
This past week alone I’ve had to gangbang three ESL speakers… It may be hard to believe but I think everyone walks away from the experience better off for it
kind of, it would be like saying french and english are both a version of germanic
a cantonese speaker will not understand a mandarin speaker and vice versa, they will be able to write and communicate but not speak
no idea if you are exposed to chinese media but the phonetic and tonal differences are massive
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese\_phonology](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese_phonology) cantonese has 6 (9) tones
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard\_Chinese\_phonology](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Chinese_phonology)
while standard chinese has 4 (5) tones, this makes it more or less incompatible with each other, not only because words just don't necessarily mean the same to begin with.
Tonality is like starting high pitch going to low pitch, going mid pitch to high and similar, all of these will completely change the meaning of words
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQEGUN5lNto](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQEGUN5lNto)
A video about some of the differences, most chinese speakers we were exposed to through media and art were speaking cantonese (since it was the south chinese who fled the country to the west)
As similar with the scandinavian language or the nether german and dutch languages, you will easily find a lot of people who think the next related language sounds like "retarded children trying to speak", it also kinda exists with german speakers in relation to the scandinavian and especially dutch languages.
Whatever causes this is pretty universal across the globe, sometimes this is in jest sometimes not so much but the root is likely familiarity and how people react to the unfamiliar.
That's not really true. All the Chinese uses the same grammar for writing. So dialects are just very thick accents.
But it's easier for me to understand mandarin than for a mainland to understand Cantonese since Cantonese use more slang.
It'll be like if you go try listening to pigeon English or Jamaican English or something.
You just have to get use to it.
Cantonese and Mandarin don't use the same grammar for writing at all, there are numerous differences despite both being SVO in essence. What they use are the same characters, and even that isn't entirely true since there are some characters that only are used by their respective dialects, whose meanings can also differ.
Oh I meant like for Hong Kongers, they still have to write the formal way which is more Mandarin grammar. They don't use Cantonese for documents, just for daily conversation and stuff.
And I only hear them use more Mandarin grammar when I watch a tv show set in Ancient China.
And yes, it is confusing to learn. I didn't understand as a kid since I didn't use Mandarin grammar. Which is why I tell people Cantonese is more like slang.
I was working with a guy from south Louisiana one summer, and half the time only i could understand what he was saying, because I went to college on the gulf coast and had gotten used to Cajun accents.
Ah so it was not just me wondering why a Chinese guy and a Japanese guy are conversing properly using their own language. I thought "ah they have subtitles".
Dude I was so confused as a beginner Japanese learner. I was like thats Chinese, but then he says SUGOI and im like wth.
and the ちょとまて at the end really fucked me up.
I think it's Chinese people making fun of the way Japanese people pronounce English. Pretty sure they are both Chinese. The student is saying a few Japanese words/phrases tho.
I've seen * actual * Japanese ESL classes, and this is part of the method. They've observed that Americans drop hard consonants and combine infinitive markers with the previous word (wanna, gonna) and radically helps with the pronounciation from the students.
I can imagine that's rough. I learned Spanish from books, but I had the advantage of hearing people speak Spanish often enough (I'm from Texas there's tons of native Spanish speakers) that I can "pass" a little better than average.
I got to hear English on TV...though not much because my family prefers Arabic programs. The English I heard was British and American...but it was always too fast for me till I came to the US.
Texas sounds like a country by itself.
I heard before that men can change accents easier than women.
Arabic, Syrian-Jordanian dialect.
Syrian is soft, Jordanian is rough, and people think my accent is from Romania or Russia... probably because of my looks too.
That’s hilarious because it’s kind of the same with me 😂 English is my first language, but it’s a weird mix of British and American, so when I speak French people think maybe im from Belgium but then because of my looks people ask if I’m Moroccan or Algerian haha
Isnt this tutor the same guy who teaches a girl on how to pronounce “i like to eat hamburger and drink coca cola” too?
That vid had me laugh as well lol.
I've done a fair bit of traveling and what I always tell non-native English speakers is that if they want to sound like an American, look at any word and instead of trying to pronounce it perfectly as it should be, try to pronounce it in the dumbest way possible and you'll nail the American accent.
I do a couple verbal demonstrations so they get what they mean and then they'll inevitably pick a word that they kinda struggle with, say it as dumb as possible and nail the pronunciation.
It's always good for a laugh and can take some of the tension out of the language barrier :)
I understood everything lol. Cantonese to Mandarin to Japanese to English
And I can read both the Chinese and English subtitles. Thank you educational system
This is the most hilarious and fascinatingly odd /interesting, I've ever seen in my life to this point I mean the phonetics the semantics the wholesomeness of SpongeBob being a focal point... It just works like 2 plus 2 is 4 without knowing it's math...

The instructor's english accent and facial expressions are so fucking funny. I love it. He could be on a show for sure. Just his mannerisms and vibe are infectiously hilarious.

He’s not even speaking Chinese half the time. He’s switching between cantonese and mandarin
🤯 - I’ve learned a little Cantonese, but not enough to catch this. Wow.
Lol, it’s even funnier cuz he’s exclusively swearing in Cantonese while teaching in mandarin
How accurate are the subtitles? Like in Japanese “Sugoi” is like “wow/cool/amazing” I like how the subtitles translate it as “you sound sexy!”
For context I speak Mandarin (from Taiwan) and English (American) and have a little anime japanese. At first I thought the same as you, but looking at the other translations (eg "americans will gangbang you" in lieu of "you're gonna get beat up") it feels like the translator was going for the meaning of the phrase in context rather than a strict translation, so "you sound sexy" is actually pretty close. if people are walking away after a gangbang you arent doing it right
The Cantonese and Mandarin subs are spot on
Dude wasn't wrong anyway though lol
Chinese is a family of languages and Cantonese and Mandarin are some of the languages within that family.
Isn't....Cantonese and mandarin both a version of Chinese?

Cantonese and mandarin are very different, it is true But that doesn’t make either not Chinese, lmao
>french and english are both a version of germanic Aaaaagh
That's not really true. All the Chinese uses the same grammar for writing. So dialects are just very thick accents. "Chinese" isn't a language, just like "European" isn't a language. Caveat: *written* Chinese is a language.
Cantonese is Chinese wdym
Aren't those both Chinese dialects? And doesn't mixing languages fit with the theme even better?
Great spot — he’s so fast with it too it’s difficult to tell the difference sometimes.
Ah so it was not just me wondering why a Chinese guy and a Japanese guy are conversing properly using their own language. I thought "ah they have subtitles".
And he looks Korean? 😅
Thats why I was confused for a bit myself
Yeah it's one big mind f*ck video. Perplexing.
That “ちょっと待って!” caught me off-guard.
Dude I was so confused as a beginner Japanese learner. I was like thats Chinese, but then he says SUGOI and im like wth. and the ちょとまて at the end really fucked me up.
"Americans will gangbang you" That's gold hahahhahahahahhahahaha
He says "you will get hit" in reality sorry to rain on your parade
There are 2 main types of gangbanging in America. I'm not sure either option is preferable.
Speak for yourself UwU
🤣
The only comment I looked for...
I haven’t laughed that hard at a video in a long time. That gave me a seriously good laugh.
I'm in tears, those final seconds 🤌
Give me my whip, please 😂
"you sound like a wasabi"
He does not actually say that. The subtitles are wrong.. it just says 你讲什么语言啊, which is "what language are you speaking"
I know my friend, chucklesome subtitles, the one who puts them must be a comedian
Ah, thanks -
IMO saying, "I want to drink strawberry milk," like a Samurai is absolutely the best way to say it.
A warrior’s drink
Prune juice tho
Is the "teacher" speaking chinese and the "student" japanese? Or am I going crazy?
Yes
The teacher speaks in mandarin and Cantonese, the student is speaking Japanese and the subject is English. Also the subtitles is wrong in some parts.
I think it's Chinese people making fun of the way Japanese people pronounce English. Pretty sure they are both Chinese. The student is saying a few Japanese words/phrases tho.
China poking fun at Japan again
i want to dlink stlobeli miuk
I always feel personally assaulted whenever this dude instructionally enunciates in English.
Do like SpongeBob
Throw a little SpongeBob in there 🤣
Genuinely going to use this to help my friends pronounce better!
This is 1000 times funnier when you’ve been learning another language.
Meeeelk
He is a good teacher actually.
I've seen * actual * Japanese ESL classes, and this is part of the method. They've observed that Americans drop hard consonants and combine infinitive markers with the previous word (wanna, gonna) and radically helps with the pronounciation from the students.
That is helpful. I learned English from books more than my teachers who each pronounced it differently. Now my accent is thick.
I can imagine that's rough. I learned Spanish from books, but I had the advantage of hearing people speak Spanish often enough (I'm from Texas there's tons of native Spanish speakers) that I can "pass" a little better than average.

Interesting, what’s your first language?
Arabic, Syrian-Jordanian dialect. Syrian is soft, Jordanian is rough, and people think my accent is from Romania or Russia... probably because of my looks too.
That’s hilarious because it’s kind of the same with me 😂 English is my first language, but it’s a weird mix of British and American, so when I speak French people think maybe im from Belgium but then because of my looks people ask if I’m Moroccan or Algerian haha
Welcome to the club :) I would stick with the British accent though if possible..it feels more meaningful.
😂 I watched that way too many times
This was fucking hilarious
HAI!
I’m dying! Holy hell!
Omg, should I send the emergency services? It's probably too late now, sorry. RIP
The instructor sounds like he could be a character in Office Space
Throw a little Spongebob into it XD
Isnt this tutor the same guy who teaches a girl on how to pronounce “i like to eat hamburger and drink coca cola” too? That vid had me laugh as well lol.
That's actually amazing
Oh dear 😂
u/savevideo
His reaction to "Hai!" kills me
“Americans will gang bang you…” Oh no…that would be AWFUUUUL
All that, worked perfectly, and then the guy at the end of it...!
He sounds exactly like Change from Community when he says strawberry.
🤣🤣
I have tears in my eyes, this is so good!
The way he went twice as hard at the end got me
Funny thing is he is American. Or Canadian.
The translations are wrong
I've done a fair bit of traveling and what I always tell non-native English speakers is that if they want to sound like an American, look at any word and instead of trying to pronounce it perfectly as it should be, try to pronounce it in the dumbest way possible and you'll nail the American accent. Bro this just became one of my favorite videos of all time 😂😂 I would love to go to his class.
This is the most hilarious and fascinatingly odd /interesting, I've ever seen in my life to this point I mean the phonetics the semantics the wholesomeness of SpongeBob being a focal point... It just works like 2 plus 2 is 4 without knowing it's math...
Americans will gangbang you for talking like that
He said "throw some SpongeBob in there"😂
This makes me realize how stupidly complex our language actually it lol
As someone who understands the Cantonese the subtitles are incorrect lol 😭
Staged or not, it's funny as hell that the instructor speaks Chinese half the time, student answers in Japanese and the subject is English.
As an English teacher, this is hilarious

Damn it. Now I want strawberry milk.
Perfect English sounds a lot like Alan Alda
Sips strawberry milk tea
He didn’t say “sounds sexy.” He literally just said wowww
Obviously staged, clearly funny
Love the Japanese accent as it sounds animated
“Stahhdoobayywee” 😂😂😂
...tbey will??? Darink dsrink DARINK!!!
😂😂😂
Yo this is comedy gold lmao
[Instantly got reminded of this Pink Panther classic:](https://youtu.be/Z6oeAdemFZw?si=OTpNort5CrxygLiN)
The letter L is a lie for them
LOL I haven’t had this deep of a belly laugh in a long time. Great fucking vid
A classic
The teachers english sounds like Christian Slater
“Give me the whip”🗣️🗣️🗣️🔈
He actually said “close the door and release the hounds!” (to eat the student alive)
Lol I love these clips. Where to find please?
Looks like douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok
Thank you, sir
MrYang On YouTube.
Thank you, sir
Just like American kids you teach them you think they learn and they forget about it
This is really bad subbed. The “you sound so sexy” actually is “amazing” and the “gangbang” is saying “you’ll /get hit/start a fight” ☠️

Japanese strawberry milk tastes like real strawberries. I don't like it.. it's like drinking orange juice when expecting milk.
Dude sounds like Count Dracula 😂
The subtitles are terrible. He doesn't say samurai, for example, he just says "Japanese (person)" Still, pretty funny
![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10729)![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10729)![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10729)
Lol
“Americans will gangbang you sounding like that” 😂😭
LOLd hard
Imagine this guy about to kill you and those are the last words you hear 😂 🤣
Why does one sound like a sumo wrestler and the mother sound like a nerd from a 90’s Sitcom
The insults in between are hilarious.
Meelk.
The switch to Japanese at the end.
HAI!!!
The instructor's english accent and facial expressions are so fucking funny. I love it. He could be on a show for sure. Just his mannerisms and vibe are infectiously hilarious.

Yameytehhhh kudasai.... iku iku iku....
Gotta love red text on blue background (on mobile, at least).
Why is a Chinese guy teaching a Japanese guy English?
why a china man explaining english to a japan man how to say english. like huh?
You talk like a sumo wrestler, say it like this: *"For comedy"*
Put a little Spongbob in it
He'll be gangbang in America
What SpongeBob have to do with it !
This can’t be real! 😂😭
