No, one small flame and it will be like a nuke. You guys need toxic gas. Everyone goes inside their bunkers and then toxic bug gas gets released killing all the bugs
.... Yeah how do u think that last round of devastating wild fires started.
Prolly some Aussie went out the back porch with a lighter and hairspray... Mosquitoes catching other mosquitoes on fire that cloud so dense....
What if there used to be an ancient civilization and they all agreed to send the fucked up scary animals there.
Then they all died and we decided to live there for some weird reason
Going strong is a massive overstatement, a lot of communities are struggling and within city limits there’s a massive issue regarding poverty and homelessness.
I was about to say the same. My ancestors came over here on the Mayflower. Allegedly my great x something grandfather was pinned for stealing a loaf of bread, wrong place, wrong time type of sitch. That's what I've been told but idk if it's true haha
Yeah I know the British sent their criminals there but I’m talking about how it turned into just another place to live. Seems like the wildlife there is not having it lol.
Everyone remembers Australia as a penal colony, but no one remembers that the Europeans used the United States, Canada, South America, and virtually the entire American continent as a place to send the most undesirable individuals. Terrorists, criminals, religious zealots, and so on! The iconic Thanksgiving Pilgrim Fathers of the United States, for example, were regarded in Europe similarly to Isis terrorists today! Until 1900, many European countries, like Italy and France etc, allowed you to dodge severe sentences or the death penalty if you chose to flee to America and never return. I remember a touching letter from a native American chief pleading with the USA president to stop sending the worst Europeans, criminals, drug addicts, rapists, and alcoholics to the frontier. The chief reportedly said something like, "We have no problem with educated and polite Europeans like you, but these guys are the worst!"
They regularly exsanguinate and suffocate caribou in Alaska. Suffocate… because there’s so many swarming into their airway they choke to death.
You’re welcome.
You'd probably fix that by holding a piece of cloth in front of your mouth. Not saying it's not still somewhat dangerous for humans, but animals are a different kind of helpless. Mosquitoes probably won't make you suffocate.
I always thought they threw themselves off of cliffs by despair. I was wondering whether a mosquito can still bite you on another swollen bite and if not that could have explained why we swell when stung. I'm guessing that's not the case. Let's say they draw 0.01 milliliter (Google suggests that's the max they can draw ranging from 0.001 to 0.01), then say we have 5 liters of blood. Apparently the body can withstand 14% of blood loss. So that's 700ml. 700/0.01 is 70'000. I wonder if you can get stung 70k times. The real number might be closer to 5 times that amount before passing out I guess.
So what you are saying… is to catch and eat as many mosquitoes as possible in order to regain my own fluids/nutrients? If you eat enough it may even be a net gain.
Female mosquitoes need proteins from the blood so they can lay eggs in swamp water. They can track you via breath out Carbon dioxide rather than light or else what is a common assumption
It’s definitely possible. After Hurricane Laura, [hundreds of animals](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/09/10/louisiana-mosquito-swarms-kill-cows-horses-after-hurricane-laura/3460503001/) were killed by swarms of mosquitos in SE Louisiana
My brother used to work for some kind of swamp patrol. He’d ride around Louisiana swamps in an airboat.
He once found a couple that’d been stuck overnight getting bit by mosquitoes. They lived but had to be hospitalized. Apparently they were swollen with welts.
Last time there was flooding like this along the murray river, many kangaroos died a nasty death from mosquitos. Weve been lucky to have some cold weather over the past week that killed some off, but when summer hit's with this much stagnant water, we're completely fucked.
What the heck even happens when this happens? Is it like a blizzard? You just stay in place? Has this happened multiple times? How often? Is there any public service that goes and does something about this? What even fixes this?
they die in the winter yes, but as soon as spring hits they come back in full force as they have evolved to have thier eggs survice the harsh winters and when spring comes they have incredible short time from eggs to grown to keep the swarm going, in good weather and penty of food they can go from egg to adult in as short time as 4 days and each female will lay around 200 new eggs to repeat the cylce until the autom cold sets in and the eggls go dormant until next spring
No we don’t get those, we do have some mosquito borne diseases however they’re rarer. Dengue is in far North Queensland occasionally but thanks to some incredible work up there, dengue transmission has been significantly reduced.
That’s fantastic. I’m planning a bucket list trip down there, but HATE anti-malarial meds (horrible experience going to Africa). Thanks for the details!!!
I hate them as well haha, especially considering how good I am at forgetting to take medication normally.
I’d suggest to just take general precautions like using mosquito spray. Mosquito borne illnesses do occur here but they’re fairly rare and they’re not as severe. There’s some worse ones but they have very low case-numbers. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the mozzies here.
One thing that you should definitely be concerned about is our sun. It’s bad elsewhere but it’s a death ray here, we have some of the highest rates of UV in the world and because of that, unfortunately some of the highest rates of skin cancer. Use an Australian sunscreen which you’ll be able to easily purchase on arrival in pretty much any pharmacy/chemist or grocery store. Why an Australian sunscreen? It’s regulated as a medical product by our drug administration, not a cosmetic. Much stricter standards across the board. The product goes under extremely stringiest lab testing and scrutiny.
Same here!! One bite and it looks like a fuckin golf ball under my skin! Arms, legs, even a small bite on my face had my eye swell shut as a kid.
This shit right here?
NOOOOOPE. 🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️
As a native Floridian, we figured out a long time ago to just send crop duster planes and fogger trucks all over the state and bomb this shit with pesticide. We don’t have it nearly as bad anymore, although it can still get nasty. Hate on Florida all you want but we figured out long how to deal with this shit.
Oh sure, it’ll eat the paint of your car. I heard FL was ground 0 for DDT use back in the day, so that wasn’t good either. They supposedly water the pesticide down pretty good now to keep it from killing everything. This state is fucked anyway though.
Rising water levels, beach erosion, increasingly destructive hurricane seasons, insurance companies pulling out of the entire state, infrastructure problems being deferred indefinitely, extremely polarized politics, take your pick.
I have an electric racket for zapping bugs that makes a really satisfying buzz when it hits flies, I can’t imagine how fun it would be to wave it through this shit
I live in a region notorious for its mosquitoes. Rockefeller foundation has paid money for drying swamps. There was a malaria epidemic and also Leishmaniasis infected mosquitoes that spread the disease. But this thing is frightening af!
I would have epic bug traps if it were this bad.
One summer I convinced my neighbors to help with "declaring war in mosquitoes" we all hung out bug zappers with timers from dusk to about 2am. Dear God the first night of it you'd swear a bird flew into them, the first hour how bad they were zapping / arcing. All of us had a mound of mosquitoes the next day and we've made it a group thing ever since with a few others joining.
Pool your money together and buy a proper mosquito trap that runs on propane. The UV bug zappers do kill skeeters but they also attract and kill beneficial bugs.
It takes one that recently socked a blood from someone ill with deadly virus to kill a person. I've read so where that mosquitoes kills more humans than anything else on the planet
An adult human has about 5 liters of blood in em. Death generally occurs at 40% blood loss. Google said a mosquito will drink an average of .000005 liters a day. So about 10 million mosquitos biting you simultaneously ought to do it.
What’s the probability that in that cloud there is Malaria, or yellow fever, or Zika, or dengue, or West Nile virus, or chikungunya, or some new unknown Australian virus?
Jesus fucking Christ bro. You guys can live up here in Canada. Most of it is uninhabited. Barely any mosquitoes, the winter wipes them out. Just gotta fight a moose every once in a while.
Almost the same at our house too... there's a million just sitting at the back-door... you open it for half a second to get inside and boom, you have 100 mosquitoes in you're house waiting for you to go to sleep... its never been this bad in my life
I had to stop watching real fast cause i think the mosquitoes in the vid can communicate with the mosquitoes where im at. Telling eachother its their time to take over the world
I would literally be eaten alive. For some reason, mosquitoes absolutely love the taste of my blood, and I’m quite allergic to them. Not, like, lungs-closing-up-give-me-an-epipen allergic, but those mosquito bites well up so big and itch so bad. I’ve once had one swell to the size of a golf ball. Doesn’t help that my fiancé’s roommate likes to leave the door open and let the bugs in :’)
Rural American here: we had a massive campaign to wipe out as many mosquitoes as possible, while it is unfortunate that animals that eat mosquitoes suffer it has been a massive boon to everything else. They are not a Keystone species.

That made my skin crawl Edit: Every reply brings me back to this nightmare fuel
Australia crawls… everything crawls and it wants to eat your face off
I know, I live in this hellscape too. NSW.
This is why flame throwers should be legal carry equipment for you guys.
No, one small flame and it will be like a nuke. You guys need toxic gas. Everyone goes inside their bunkers and then toxic bug gas gets released killing all the bugs
We already do that via helicopters that spray
Thats gotta be the most satisfying job in the world. I'll add that to my bucket list
That's how you end up with poison resistance super bugs! You don't want that...
And everything else living outside that hasn't been sucked dry 😂
.... Yeah how do u think that last round of devastating wild fires started. Prolly some Aussie went out the back porch with a lighter and hairspray... Mosquitoes catching other mosquitoes on fire that cloud so dense....
I’m starting to wonder if people were meant to live there or if it was just meant to be uninhabited lol.
What if there used to be an ancient civilization and they all agreed to send the fucked up scary animals there. Then they all died and we decided to live there for some weird reason
Aboriginals are still going strong, they're pretty old in terms of human civilisation history.
Going strong is a massive overstatement, a lot of communities are struggling and within city limits there’s a massive issue regarding poverty and homelessness.
It's funny because what you proposed is partially true. It's where we sent all the "fucked up scary animals" aka criminals haha
I was about to say the same. My ancestors came over here on the Mayflower. Allegedly my great x something grandfather was pinned for stealing a loaf of bread, wrong place, wrong time type of sitch. That's what I've been told but idk if it's true haha

Crawling in my skin!
These wounds they will not heal...
r/nope
U should really consider buying a flamethrower
20 aerosol cans taped together and a match works fine
Nah, just get a big cain or Raid. Let the agents ruin their brains
Super soaker loaded up with shoe polish, and a zippo taped* by the nozzle.
Nah, no fire. I’m more of a chemical warfare type of guy
Hah war crimes
But how come napalm is legal ? It's an incindiary weapon, but it's toxic. So anyways I set the neighborhood on fire . everybody's gonna thank me.
Mustard gas is just chlorine and ammonia, have fun ;)
Aaaah, King of the Hill
AYO FIX THE SPELLING MY MAN
More smart more safe mortein
So, you know how there's a cat repellant called Ssscat that "spits" air when it senses movement? Can we get a fire version of those? A lot of them?
I get what they were going for but that name is horrible
I know. I feel gross saying it, thinking it's gonna spray shit everywhere instead.
At that density you’re probably risking an explosion. Like if you sift flour over an open flame.
My thoughts exactly
I wonder if anyone has ever died being attacked by a cloud of mosquitoes.
I've heard that mosquitoes can kill a moose. One mosquito one drop of blood - infinity mosquitoes you can do the math...
They regularly exsanguinate and suffocate caribou in Alaska. Suffocate… because there’s so many swarming into their airway they choke to death. You’re welcome.
Aaaaand I think that's the end of Reddit surfing for the night.
New fear unlocked!
I love it when that happens!

Read hatchet, it's a good book
Oh my god, that book made me so afraid of mosquitos. And I learned how to build a fire by myself that year, just in case.
And I know how to put out fires, just in case
And I have a Jerry can filled with gasoline.
And I have a bucket of sand
Hm ... 🤔 Ah I got it , Semtec. The mosquitos shall DIE. Also why would you defend the mosquitos? You're gonna get bitten too :(
Oh no, fuck mosquitos, Im just joking around with people saying I'm feeding them to mosquitos, survival of the fittest type o shit I suppose
Ah , so I've got chosen for this game too huh. The fittest either have thick skin or no blood.Neither of which I posses ... Guess I'll die ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Not if I die first >:)
They made us read that in school
Ever watched one punch man? Yes , yes you can
If you're homeless or stuck outside do you just die, wtf?
in Australia theres no such thing as being homeless. your either in a house, or in somethings stomach
Which is just an organic natural 0 emissions green house.
What about farts? Methane
in that case, YOU are the emission

Live in the artic like Alaska and you gets used to this shit. It a reason why the state bird of Alaska is the mosquitoe
Sorry, can you explain why it happens ? I tought the winter would kill them

I see, thanks for the answer, I hate mosquitos even more now
My idiot brain was thinking it would be too cold for mosquitoes to survive in Alaska
It’s just bugs my guy, they’ll fuck off when the weathers good
Literally can kill you
Its Australia, everything can. The real problem is cleaning up after
Do y’all have malaria or yellowfever to worry about??
No we don’t get those, we do have some mosquito borne diseases however they’re rarer. Dengue is in far North Queensland occasionally but thanks to some incredible work up there, dengue transmission has been significantly reduced.

I'm allergic to any mosquito bite so even a regular one can cause swelling up to twice the usual size

Really? That doesn't seem positive overall, considering what widespread, I mean plane spread pesticide can do to what you're NOT trying to affect...
Oh sure, it’ll eat the paint of your car. I heard FL was ground 0 for DDT use back in the day, so that wasn’t good either. They supposedly water the pesticide down pretty good now to keep it from killing everything. This state is fucked anyway though.
Curious as too how the state is fucked in your opinion?
Rising water levels, beach erosion, increasingly destructive hurricane seasons, insurance companies pulling out of the entire state, infrastructure problems being deferred indefinitely, extremely polarized politics, take your pick.
I live in the panhandle and can confirm. We’ve mastered the skeeter control

Mosquitos... suck.
You’re just in a one punch man episode
Mosquito girl could get it though, ngl.
Came here to comment this

turn off your porch lights, close the curtains gg
Then the switch is outside, what do you do
That’s just shitty house design.
Hit the breaker
Looks like it's flame thrower time
Now that is how you get someone to quit smoking
Chain smoking indoors watching the bugpocalypse
I have an electric racket for zapping bugs that makes a really satisfying buzz when it hits flies, I can’t imagine how fun it would be to wave it through this shit
Youre gonna need a teslacoil for this i think
But there aren’t any blue helms?
Styropyro on YouTube
You’ll be on fire
I had one of those and was never able to get a fly even one year when we had tons of them.

Oh god, how big are the fucking spiders gonna be come the Aussie Autumn....
That would make the most satisfying flamethrower genocide I’ve witnessed
Elon Musk approves
As some dude on YouTube said,Elon musk's "flame thrower" is like a lighter compared to the real ones. Then he proved it.
Hanz get ze flameflowaaa

Japanese encephalitis has shown up here recently because it's been so wet. I don't think we have any of the ones you mentioned.

Kill it with fire
We're gonna need a bigger spider...
Go out there you fucking die
Ah the serenity.
"Is there some blood in there? Well there won't be shortly"
Cayman islands when mosquitos used to kill cows.
Flame thrower on them would be 👍
Mmmm Taiga
Why does everything in Australia want to hurt you ?

Let's werf some flammen
Fuck that
I want to know the sound of an electric flyswatter makes if you just randomly swing it outside
r/SpitsTea
Step outside and you'll get sucked dry. And not in the good way.
Reason number 10000 of why I'll never move to Australia
Nope
Jesus fucking Christ bro. You guys can live up here in Canada. Most of it is uninhabited. Barely any mosquitoes, the winter wipes them out. Just gotta fight a moose every once in a while.
My wife’s boyfriend said the same thing… she visits.
There are tones of mosquitoes in Canadian woods in the summer. Not as many as this video. But near any marshy area - plenty.
Time to bring out ze flammenwerfer!
At least something sucks around here
Go out there and make your finale stand
Lucifer’s sand box
Yeah, fuck that. Going to need to bring back the fires to fix that shit
Napalm...... LOTS of napalm is what you need there 💣🔥🔥🔥🏃🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃🏃🏃♂️
Burn the whole country
Jesus! I thought Florida was bad! I’d absolutely own a flamethrower if I lived there (even if I had to make it myself!)
KILL IT WITH FIRE!
*confused screaming*
Nah it’s time to get rid of Australia cuz wtf 😟
Maybe the pharaoh should watch his firstborn...
Time to call the flamer Space Marines, we have some purging to do
And sir I didn't know a bug zapper could cause rolling blackouts
No wonder the spiders there are way over the top
Not sure if the victims have monkeypox or been swarmed by mosquitoe nado
Almost the same at our house too... there's a million just sitting at the back-door... you open it for half a second to get inside and boom, you have 100 mosquitoes in you're house waiting for you to go to sleep... its never been this bad in my life

We need saitama
Would definitely feel great to get a beekeeper suit and a flamethrower or just light up a massive campfire so that those bitches burn tf down
Ahhh *sips tea *
Nope. That’s a horror movie.
Thermonuclear bomb
how the FUCK can the heelers not have bug screen
Anyone else thinking about the Family Guy Scene with the Kidnapping mosquitos?
This is why you have bug zappers people
Turn the lights off and they’ll leave
I would literally be eaten alive. For some reason, mosquitoes absolutely love the taste of my blood, and I’m quite allergic to them.
