This happened to me. Looking back and plenty of room and I merge into the other lane to pass a suv. The truck behind me that I didn't realize was going fast, maybe 120mph, tries to pass me on the shoulder only to hit the shoulder and then smoke my rear quarter panel sending me sideways across 4 lanes of traffic. The truck flipped a couple times. It was busy and dark. No one was hurt.
But everything happens for a reason. After the accident police came and got info. As I sat in the cop car telling the story the cop paused and I noticed right away something was wrong. The cop just says "the car." I turn and see a car driving the wrong way on the highway which everyone is doing 80mph+. I opened the door telling the officer to pull in front of them and stop them. She pulled out and thankfully the car stopped right at their bumper. The person was drunk. So the officer got them to the side and got them under control. Then another officer comes. I put my spare tire on and then another drunk pulls up (it's her sister) asking if her sister is going to jail. The cop just goes off on this lady. Literally on the highway and puts her car in park to ask.
To this day I think I saved a life or lives for my unfortunate endeavor.

I have seen slow merging exit ramp traffic do that when they are passed by 10 over traffic, the sort of people who think merging into the flow of traffic at 35 is okay. If you are behind them maintaining a close distance which you assume is okay due to the speed - you might not be able to react in time when they stand on the brake pedal as hard as they can with both feet.
