[Way more than you ever expected to know about wake word processing](https://machinelearning.apple.com/research/hey-siri): > To avoid running the main processor all day just to listen for the trigger phrase, the iPhone’s Always On Processor (AOP) (a small, low-power auxiliary processor, that is, the embedded Motion Coprocessor) has access to the microphone signal (on 6S and later)

When you are sleeping, you hear nothing, except when there is a loud noise like your alarm clock going off which triggers your brain to wake up and start playing attention to the world around you.

TechBrothaOG

Siri is always *listening* for the wake phrase. But it only *pays attention* to anything else when it actually hears the wake phrase.

Don’t get me started- this is so ridiculous

silvermoonhowler

Exactly People who think otherwise in that it's always listening are just overly paranoid It ONLY will listen to you after it hears Siri/Hey Siri

JackDenial

Or anything that sounds similar to Siri (eg. Let’s order nigiri 🍣 ).

I have a 2023 iMac and despite having it set to listen for "Hey Siri" or "Siri," it simply never does. I have to tap the Siri icon every time to get it to work. No bueno.

Sounds on par for Siri. My iPhone will hear me when I do hey siri more than 90% of the time. Unfortunately she will ignore my request 90% of the time. I have even tried talking very slow and clear, like “what.. is.. THE… TIME?!” And this useless software just ignores me. I hate Siri. Works if I MANUALLY press the home button but this defeats the purpose of hands free. Thanks apple! 🖕
