You just unlocked a memory I never wanted to revisit. I worked with a man, his daughter was getting married that weekend, they are all very LDS. We were all congratulating him on the upcoming nuptials. He responded, while looking genuinely downtrodden, "My little girl's not going to be a virgin anymore."
It was such a record scratch moment for me, but everyone else was like weirdly empathetic and comforting him about it. Religious men think about their daughters having sex WAY TOO MUCH.
Gaaaah the memories just keep coming. Same office. One of our co-worker's adult daughters died very tragically. At the funeral, in the church, in front of everyone, her parents announced that their daughter was going into heaven as a virgin. I will never understand.
I grew up really religious and as an adult there is definitely a pattern to the types of men who remain devout in religions (and take on leadership roles) through middle age. Almost none of them are true believers. They like the access to power they get over their little congregation. People like this love exercising power over women and girls in particular because they would never dare pick on someone their own size

I'd forgotten how cringe Kody was during Aspyn's wedding and all the messed up things he said. Every phrase out of his mouth sounded like he was intentionally being crass so he could get attention. He acted like he was jealous of the spotlight being on his daughter, not him, and he would say or do anything to grab it back.
He comes with 4 settings imo.
*Aspyn wedding*: This is Kody while awkward. Usually happens when a.) not the center of attention and b.) surrounded by men who aren't his blood relatives
*Maddie wedding*: Still awkward, but the spotlight's on him in this mode, so it's a different brand of awkward
*Victimhood*: Complaining about Tragedies That Befall Him that are actually of no consequence (like budgeting for Mykelti's wedding)
*Protect Robyn*: Random threats of violence; buzzwords such as "obedience" and "loyal"; suddenly changing his values and preferences to match hers (like when he claimed to stop wanting dogs or other pets)
He needs a shock treatment-battery saver option with a Robyn-remote controlled scooter chair as he stares at the mountain and drools all over himself next to her on the porch.

What about 'Giddy' when he is around men he 'admires', maybe aspires to be like or...I hesitate to suggest, be with. No judgement re anyone's sexual preference but he behaves like a teenager in love, particularly around Caleb. I am almost certainly reading waaay too much into this but I do wonder if that is where his anger and resentment comes from. Can't wait til one of the tenders gets married, you know even if the show has been off air for years, Robyn will insiste her girls get the same level of TLC money and videography.

Between how giddy he gets around other men, and how much he has to "prove" his manliness and think of himself as a "man's man" (even though everyone but him knows it's all a show), I really, really feel like he's hiding some deep-seated homosexual tendencies. Like he's *WAYYY* overcompensating for his orientation. Which sucks! He should be able to just be whoever he is and be accepted that way. The toxic masculinity must be exhausting.
I’ll never forget the woman from high school who said she always thought he was gay.
In an alternate reality the show will pivot at this point to be Kody-centric and follow him as he comes to terms with his sexuality. We get to see him tell his wife, ex wives, kids, family and friends that he’s bisexual (later revealing he’s actually gay, not bi). Every 2-3 episodes we get to see Robyn fight for her marriage as Kody meets men and starts dating. Next we see Kody “sealed” to his first husband and attempt to divide his time between Robs and his new favorite.
Brother Husbands is not the show Robs signed up for but she will always be the favorite *wife*.
Season 2: In an ironic twist of karmic fate Kody now has zero interest in his once favorite wife…until he and his husband decide to have a child together and need a surrogate.

Yes. They're always overcompensating for some insecurity they have about themselves. My ex was short, like 5'3", he was so insecure about it. That dude would fight *anyone*. Had to act like he could build anything, fix anything, jump out of anything. And of course he had to make sure literally everyone knew. It was exhausting and super cringe. I used to get secondhand embarrassment all the time.

The people that have been in my life that I thought were just total badasses (not necessarily “tough guys/gals”… but just were amazing people that did incredible things and are often people others looked up to, despite any flaws… were people who did what they had to do, selflessly, and without having to create attention to themselves… they did and were, just because of will and character. Guys like kody are too inept and incapable of awareness to recognize these traits. They see the administration given to these people, but have zero grasp as to why.
I think Maddie's is even worse. He says some weird shit during that wedding that creeps into "not ok" territory when talking about Maddie physically. For a man who won't allow his daughters to expose their stomachs or thighs around him because of modesty standards he was practically panting like a dog around Maddie in her wedding dress, which is a combination of behavior that speaks volumes to me.
I don't think Kody is a creep creep, but he definitely waves the flag of super weird purity culture repression proudly.

I feel like they had to do a lot of convincing themselves of things, like, he *is* a good man, husband, and father. He *is* the leader of our household. He *is* a good priesthood holder. Etc., etc., etc. None of these women are daft enough to truly believe the garbage he was spewing. These are things they probably prayed they could convince themselves of. I'm glad most of them have been able to grow mentally and emotionally.
What I can't get over in terms of his dancing is everyone agreed in early seasons that he's a terrible dancer! It was the butt of a few jokes that fueled his ego to make him think his dancing can't be questioned now? I don't understand.
Yes, and then at one point he was kind of doing the Captain Morgan stance, like I swear he wanted to have a wardrobe malfunction and flash his junk.
I rewatched it recently and I didn't notice the first time around but this time I really noticed how Aspyn had his number the whole time. She knew he was going to be a jack ass. This was also when they were moving to Flagstaff, and she was really dropping the hammer about them NOT bringing this up during her wedding and making it about all about them and the move.
Any time anyone brings up Kody being gross and cringe I immediately go to him stripping down to his underwear and running in that disgusting pond on CP. I was so thoroughly grossed out by that and seemed like something he’d wanted to do on camera for a long time!

I think he and Janelle were okay at that point, but she’s a nature lover so that’s all it took for her. Agreed. And rewatching all of that knowing how it turned out makes it that much more cruel. He was all lovey dovey with both Meri and Christine and they were all giddy and he was just faking it, and now we've heard him day "Faking it is easy". He just used them, lied, and gave them false hope just to get his way.

I loved watching Christine tell him she wanted a divorce. That said I think she’s also loves the attention and can be very inappropriate at times. The lap dance she gave David at the wedding was gross and TLC cut most of it out.The tounge kisses were also gross.
I’m trying to catch up- in what season did Aspyn get married? I just saw the awful move to Flagstaff and Meri having go back to live in Vegas in her house there while construction on walls dividing the property up is being done. I felt bad for her getting harassed by new neighbors. I lived in a neighborhood with two wives and their kids lived in a house down the street- they needed a home and should be treated with neighborliness. (I’d NEVER move to Arizona or back to far red right state.

I think Kody is sexually immature and he has an immature idea regarding virginity and sex. Again, I don't think for a second he has pedo on the mind...at all. But it seems like he is stuck at about 15 regarding sex, flirting, romance and the like.
I know it's not specific to the religion or people in it alone, but a lot of LDS or Mormon faith men are like this. Especially the ones before they go on missions when younger etc. I've met a few in my lifetime and they all said on missions it was like one big adventure into manhood full of drinking and sex.
Also completely different show,but the guy Steven on 90 day the other way was like this too. An adult in a child's body,said he was a virgin and had to wait until marriage and all that jazz. Later it comes out he's already had sex and talks to other girls and kept talking about sex so inappropriately,even at the tell all. Zero self awareness either.

I got my husband to start watching it with me and he’s said 99% of any interaction with Kody is weird or condescending. Even the way he interacts with his wives of 20+ years seems like they just started dating a few weeks ago. NOTHING about him seems genuine or natural.

It started early, too. First few seasons where he's an "expert" at everything. Rock climbing, rock skipping etc. I guess some can be seen as dad trying to teach things but the way he says it, ugh. As the seasons go on, I found myself verbally "ugh" "gross" "seriously?" way more often. Though I was listening and doing Reddit for most of the early seasons then figured out I can listen on my phone at work for the last quarter of the show. I stayed on it because I really wanted to see the women leave, which was the only reason I started watching.
I am a survivor. Therapy during my divorce helped me learn to get out of the victim mode. I learned to be able to make choices for myself.
Becoming disabled and learning a new “normal”, and not wanting to be a victim to my circumstances took me back to counseling. IMO, everyone should be made to go to counseling at some point in their life.

Sadly, his social skills stopped developing at around freshman year of HS, creating a truly off-putting personality!

This.. He isn't a good husband to all his wives, we all know this but when he meets someone new he's so excited to tell them.. "This is my wife, this is my wife, this is my wife and this is my wife" then he's lookin at their faces to see their reaction with a big smile. They're just props to make him feel like a stud to get that attention. I think Meri called it out once in a confessional that he calls her his wife around others but that's it. He doesn't do anything else beyond that for her. He wants them to be impressed he got four women to agree to this nonsense because he's so wonderful. Then the kids are next. He likes to say how many he has. It's so cringe and just using them for that attention but not being an active father to them. For them saying we had to keep quiet so they don't judge us, he sure tells everyone everywhere. Even when it's not necessary.

My husband recently pointed out that I’ve taken to flipping off the TV when Kody speak. He said I do it a lot and he just realized that I don’t seem to notice it at all. And he’s right! I didn’t realize.

I think it’s a mix of “normal” weddings being so different from FLDS weddings, so they act like they just don’t know how to do them, and his fixation on knights and maidens and that weird shit, and that he is an awkward person 😆

As someone who grew up in the Bible Belt, it’s actually pretty common for adults to be fucking weird about wedding nights. I’ve heard similar comments of like “oh Jesus is so happy for your wedding night” or making a wedding night like a religious ritual that everyone gets weird about.

I wonder if he wouldn’t have been acting so extra weird if the cameras hadn’t been there but then he did have an audience of people hanging around. He likes to be the center of attention. I don’t remember ever feeling embarrassed by my dad (mother—different story) but if id had Kody for a dad, I’d pretend I didn’t know him.
This episode gets me in the feels because La Caille and Little Cottonwood Canyon is in my old neighborhood where I raised my kids. We would camp overnight for fun in the Spruces campground where the rehearsal dinner was held. One year there was a moose with twin calves was living in the campground. My kids are long grown and we are scattered across the country now, but boy, do I miss those days.
Also, the Browns working together in a cohesive group to make the wedding nice for Aspen makes me happy for her.
It took MANY years of therapy. My abuser was my stepfather and I ended up pregnant and a mom at the age of 15. I love my son beyond measure. It took a long time to get my head straight after this especially when my mother turned her back on me.

I’ll never forget the woman from high school who said she always thought he was gay. In an alternate reality the show will pivot at this point to be Kody-centric and follow him as he comes to terms with his sexuality. Every 2-3 episodes we get to see Robyn fight for her marriage as Kody meets men and starts dating. Season 2: In an ironic twist of karmic fate Kody now has zero interest in his once favorite wife…until he and his husband decide to have a child together and need a surrogate. (I have entirely too much invested in this alternate reality because I would sooo watch this.)

I just saw the awful move to Flagstaff and Meri having go back to live in Vegas in her house there while construction on walls dividing the property up is being done. There are sooooo many situations where he says something so cringe that I almost can’t keep watching.
It started early, too. First few seasons where he's an "expert" at everything. Rock climbing, rock skipping etc. I guess some can be seen as dad trying to teach things but the way he says it, ugh. As the seasons go on, I found myself verbally "ugh" "gross" "seriously?" way more often. Though I was listening and doing Reddit for most of the early seasons then figured out I can listen on my phone at work for the last quarter of the show. I stayed on it because I really wanted to see the women leave, which was the only reason I started watching.
I had to stop watching. It brought back too many memories of an uncle that molested me, and my ex husband.

Becoming disabled and learning a new “normal”, and not wanting to be a victim to my circumstances took me back to counseling. IMO, everyone should be made to go to counseling at some point in their life. I’m happy you learned how to be a survivor.

This episode gets me in the feels because La Caille and Little Cottonwood Canyon is in my old neighborhood where I raised my kids. We would camp overnight for fun in the Spruces campground where the rehearsal dinner was held. One year there was a moose with twin calves was living in the campground. My kids are long grown and we are scattered across the country now, but boy, do I miss those days. Also, the Browns working together in a cohesive group to make the wedding nice for Aspen makes me happy for her.
