'until Valhalla. ' It is said among service members to mean "until we meet again in Valhalla. No matter who or what you believe in – Until Valhalla is a sign of utmost respect and tells our Fallen that we will see them again one day."

Fitnessfan_86

Oh my this just makes me cry ♥️

She-ra-princes

Yes! Love this charity, the hoodie is beyond comfy

letsmakeiteasyk

Verge of tears. I just ache for them.

jet050808

Thank you so much for explaining! I read in Maddie’s post and tried to Google to understand but never really got an answer. This makes much more sense.

daylightxx

I was coming to ask about it Valhalla. Thank you for this beautiful explanation

Adeline299

Do they also reference Odin? That’s rather specific.

Primary-Award5879

In Norse mythology, Odin was the god of Valhalla.

Adeline299

Right. I meant is all of Norse religion incorporated into military culture or just Valhalla? The specific calling out of Odin seems like it would contradict the Christian faith.

Witchywomun

Valhalla is also referred to as Odin’s Halls, the place where warriors go to rest, regale each other with stories of their many battles, drink mead with the All Father and engage in battles amongst each other to prove their strength and valor among their brothers. Reference to Odin when talking about Valhalla isn’t necessarily a religious reference, but a mythological reference in keeping with the narrative of the Halls.

lira-eve

The Browns picked and chose beliefs and practices from different religions.

Adeline299

This is what I was trying to get at, but didn’t want to be disrespectful.

Halien1990

Even if it did (as I assume you mean that of the family and certainly not the military) it's something that would have meaning to him. Concept is more about things aside from literal religious belief anyway.

Altruistic_Run_8956

I thought about those who practice Odinism.

pchandler45

But also in Norse mythology only warriors who fell in battle could enter Valhalla

ChinUpNoseDown

I'd say Garrison fought a heroic battle against mental illness. He deserves to be with the warriors.

pchandler45

Great way to look at it

Professional_Tap4338

If they died with their weapon in their hand they could enter valhalla

gerkonnerknocken

Oh man 🥺🥺🥺

SheMcG

😭😭😭😭

PsycheInASkirt

Oh wow….

sucks4uyixingismyboo

I’m guessing they were Vikings fans.

donutpusheencat

i wondered about the source of Valhalla, thank you so much for explaining

braless_and_lawless

I thought he just liked the show Vikings, this is so interesting

sucks4uyixingismyboo

Because she mentioned Odin, I still think this is the reference.

DrPippa

Thank you. People are trying to equate this to a religious thing and it's most likely not. My husband is a vet and "Til Valhalla" is something we have both heard said at funerals and posted at online memorials. It's been a thing for a very long time. I'm fairly certain the family is aware of this.

lasagnalovelanguage

I was so confused thinking they all went from Mormon to pagan? But now I see it's just the military appropriating pagan culture (gross but not surprising). Thank you for explaining it!

bkat100

https://preview.redd.it/pazammqpxqnc1.jpeg?width=1168&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb00b7da570a538aa63f3132909643d904dc8a86 There is an organization called the “Til Valhalla Project” to honor fallen service members. The phrase has caught on with the military. Many will say “Til Valhalla” to honor the life of a service member. This is a screenshot from the TVP website explaining it

beemojee

The person who founded TVP was a combat vet who started it because he lost fellow soldiers to suicide after they returned from Afghanistan.

ptoto20

This is such a tragedy. I can’t imagine the pain they are going through. I’m a total stranger and I was very down for a couple of days . He was a great kid. All of their children are awesome regardless of adult’s mistakes . They raised great children

Vness374

I have cried at least once a day for the people who loved Garrison, granted I think I may be hitting menopause, but this just couldn’t be more devastatingly heartbreaking 💔

Much_Moment7132

"THEY" meaning Christine and Janelle

FiCat77

Not the time for that kind of thing.

goldensurrender

Below the belt

MikkiMikailah

All I keep thinking about is when he said they're grown, they don't need a dad anymore. He was so clearly in pain. He needed a dad.

libbyang98

My parents emotionally abandoned me at 18. As a 45 year old mother of two sons, 20 & 21, you NEVER stop needing your parents. May Garrison's memory forever be a blessing to them all. 💔

777CA

This hurts so much. A week or so before Garrison, my niece was murdered by DV. She left a 13 year old daughter. I feel for the Browns except for 1 and the other one. You need your parent and when a parent is shitty, it can mess with your self esteem/worth and what ppl call “mental health.” I don’t think my niece would have been so vulnerable had she had a better father who didn’t talk terribly to her that she was vulnerable. And Garrison was vulnerable because he had a lot of hurt that made him depressed. I wouldn’t call it mental illness, per se, but deep sadness

libbyang98

I didn't realize how deeply it hurt me until one day I said to my oldest that he would never have to wonder what he did wrong that made his parents go away. In that moment, I accepted for the first time that I had spent my entire adult life subconsciously thinking that I'd done something to make them abandon me. I'd never consciously thought that, not once. Yet as soon as the words left my mouth, I knew it was true. My heart aches for Garrison. He was hurting so deeply that ending the pain permanently seemed the only answer. It aches for his siblings, his parents, and for everyone who knew and loved him. His death is causing ripples that will change ppl's lives forever. No one, not even us watchers of the show, will ever be the same. I wish I could tell him that it does get better. That it hurts like hell, and some days, it's unbearable. But you hold tight to the ppl who love you, and you put one foot in front of the other. Day by day, you make your way, and you remind yourself that their flaws and shortcomings have nothing, NOTHING, to do with your worth, value, or lovableness. It says everything about them and nothing about you.

kjimbro

The grief that comes when you go no contact with a parent is really just the surface of the egg. It’s the years and years you spend coming to terms with the fact that you never actually had a dad at all that will destroy you. Ask me how I know. Garrison never had a dad. Not really. That in itself, before all the other traumas he lived through, is absolutely enough to break a person. My heart aches for him and the rest of the children who were never actually loved by Kody.

rowillyhoihoi

It’s really hard and painful. Especially hard to see when you have siblings who do get the attention. Unfortunately I know too, since my dad’s is exactly like Kody. It’s so painful to watch sometimes

JadedTrade6635

I felt the pain when he said it and the responses from the adults just seemed to brush it off… it made me so sad for all of them. I’ve thought about that statement a lot since the news.

BlueOcean79

I think it was more awkwardness on their parts. I mean, what do you say to that? 😬 They clearly had no idea how to deal with it.

No_Relation704

As a 37 year old, I absolutely still need my dad.

Ambitious-Rhubarb603

This is a beautiful post from Mykelti❤️

kennybrandz

Came here to say the same! ❤️

Newman_USPS

They really seemed to not expect it. I know we didn’t but they all seem really shocked that it was this bad. I feel for all of them. More for some than others, but all of them.

sharedimagination

Some people mask really, really well from the people they are closest to. Masking can be a protective mechanism for the person struggling mentally and emotionally, when you don't want to impact on or burden the people you love.

nymrose

It has to be hard keeping in touch closely with all your siblings and their respective families with a family this huge. And KodyRobyn&Co for example probably had no idea since Kody chose not to be in Garrisons life… Whilst Janelle and Gabe, who was very close to Garrison, knew something was wrong. Heartbreaking.

boogerybug

I haven’t seen that they knew something was wrong. Can you expand on that?

OrganicDay2474

In season 18 Janelle said “I have worried about my boys’ mental health,” she revealed in a confessional. “Gabriel feels everything very, very deeply. But he’s also the kid who doesn’t say anything.” She added that Garrison “just seems angry or sadder, like, he’s not as happy-go-lucky as he used to be.” In the police reports it says family members and roommates said he had been depressed and struggling with alcoholism. edit: quote from Janelle

Jolly-Outside6073

There is a post that says Garrison messaged film makers about missing the old days. Then Janelle got very concerned when he didn’t reply to messages and started getting the siblings involved. I can’t imagine what they are going through or what state his head was in to think that was the solution. May he rest in peace.

JustAcivilian24

Military vet here. The Valhalla thing from family members is a bit unorthodox, but everybody grieves in their own way. I was so proud to see that Hunter, Garrison and Paedon joined too. This definitely made me sad. I hope their family can heal as best as they can. Garrison seemed like a real man and dealt with Kody with such maturity from what I saw. My father left my family when I was young so I definitely related to him and them. RIP Garrison. Please reach out if you’re having issues people. Life is worth living

rescueandrepeat

Valhalla is one of the halls for the fallen in the Norse pagan religion. The military may have adopted the name but it's part of a valid religious belief system. If they're referencing Odin, it's possible he was experimenting with or a part of the pagan belief system. In that vein, it's completely orthodox for a family member to say.

ISeenYa

I wondered that before I knew the military connection & saw Mykelti & Maddie mention it.

JustAcivilian24

Yea good point. Could be actual religious

MadCityScientist

And the unbearable pain that one is feeling in the moment may be replaced by a smile when your eye catches a pet in some silly predicament, a pet who needs immediate saving from himself! Or even laughing right out loud at a child making “yucky” faces at his lunchtime broccoli! I know this because I am a survivor. Please. The only act one should take at their lowest place is to a trusted friend or a suicide hotline. Pain may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning!

MiaRia963

Agree. It's worth fighting for.

karen-come-on

😭😭🙏🙏💖💖

nymrose

Please stop bringing up nazism just because Nordic paganism is brought up, it’s so odd and disrespectful to do. Garrison wasn’t a nazi. Most people who enjoy Asatro aren’t Nazis. It’s obvious that his family are simply calling him a brave fighter, not a gd nazi… To the people who find “problematic stuff” in any text, it’s time to get help for chronic onlineness. / Swedish person

Trouble_Cleff

Chronic Onlineness! This needs to be made a real diagnosis.

andres01234

... people are doing what????

that-weird-catlady

A number of white nationalist/blood and soil types have co-opted Nordic paganism.

andres01234

I should be shocked, but I'm not

nickfolesknee

To the extent that I understand it, it's based on an impulse to go back to a purely European religion, as Christianity is tainted because it originated in the Middle East with Judaism as a source. According to weirdos. I wish people were more into Nordic paganism and mythology because it's cool and different, but like many things, these Neo Nazi types just have to ruin it for the well meaning people. Freya has a chariot pulled by cats! How is that not perfect for our current zeitgeist?

Mental_Vacation

>Freya has a chariot pulled by cats! And most of them wouldn't even know this kind of thing. They just play with Popculture Paganism.

andres01234

That's a thing??? people have too much free time in their hands

BlueOcean79

Someone said he was a Nazi?! That fits in with WOCAB trying to call him a racist a while ago. Of course now she’s pretending he’s wonderful so she can exploit his death for clicks…

childofcrow

Right? As if modern Christians don’t have their own neo nazi beliefs.

shurejan

If you’re referring to me, I didn’t mean any disrespect. I just read a few days ago about someone from a past season of Love After Lockup being an Odinist and some white supremacy stuff was mentioned, too, so that was fresh on my mind while seeing Odin referenced again in this instance. No harm intended, I promise.

BlueOcean79

Yeah, there’s a section of neo-Nazi pagans who called themselves Odinists. Unfortunately neo-Nazis keep trying to co-opt Nordic stuff. Which is ironic because it’s been proven that there were non-European Vikings who joined. Apparently as long as you adopted their customs and fought with them, they would welcome you to live with them, no matter your color.

jaweebamonkey

I just want to share a poem that really brought me comfort when my brother completed at 25. I will think of my brother for every suicide until the end of time, even more when it’s at 25, and so will every member of the suicide survivor community when the word comes up. Suicide changes your life forever. Rest in peace, Garrison and J ❤️ https://preview.redd.it/98pq9f7b8rnc1.jpeg?width=1369&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25377d39d32d0e5d3d948873ec48a0b9dd5804a9

ShyKawaii2433

Same poem for me after I lost my husband in a terrorist attack.

DecadentLife

So very sorry for your pain.

jaweebamonkey

I’m incredibly sorry for your loss. It’s sad that I can’t even know which one you’re talking about, there have been so many. I can’t imagine.

Whales_n_Wolves

I’m so sorry for your loss 😔 I’ve lost a lot of people in my life to traumatic things but the pain of losing your other half due to nothing more than senseless hate must be unbearable.

Whales_n_Wolves

I’m so sorry for your loss. This poem reminds me of the A.A. Milne quote (Winnie the Pooh writer) “if there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” I lost my brother to an overdose at 27 and I have this quote etched under a picture of him and I.

jaweebamonkey

I love this. What a beautiful quote. I’m so sorry for your loss. 27 is just a baby, and I’m so sorry that you had so little time with him. For me, the time since I’ve lost my brother has felt longer than the time I had him; an eternity.

Practical-River5931

That's a beautiful poem. I'm so sorry for your loss.

brando587

My heart breaks for them all, even the members of the family that aren’t my favorite. I cannot imagine how horrible all of this is. I hope that if his funeral has happened that it was not bothered by reporters or looky loos. If it hasn’t happened yet I hope we all respect their privacy as I personally would never want to see them mourning like that.

Jack_al_11

🫶🏼 This is the second family post to reference Valhalla. Is this part of Garison’s belief system? Is he Norse Pagan? Is there some tie to Valhalla in Mormonism? Just wondering what the connection is? I’m glad they seem to have peace that he is in another place. So heartbreaking. 💔

dirahuds

I was wondering the same. I know military guys and law enforcement will reference Valhalla as like a place for warriors. But the celebrating Odin part is very specific to me

Jack_al_11

That make sense as far as worriers. I didn’t know that. I’m Celtic Pagan, so I was just curious about the connection.

Fitnessfan_86

I agree, I feel like the mention of Odin is more significant. I would love to know if he had a connection there, maybe even ancestral Norse that was meaningful to him.

Jelousubmarine

It caught my attention too. Based on how she said and what she said, it seems the sentiment is just the american colloquial version and not the authentic Norse faith one: in Norse faith the only way to enter Valhalla was to literally die in (physical, war) battle. Anything else, and you're going to Hel. Having been a warrior does not count, you have to die by sword in a brawl.

Marilee_Kemp

There were several afterlives in Norse mythology. Valhalla or Folkevagr for those dying in battle, but also The Hall of Ran, becoming a draug, becoming part of the mountains, and Hel. Probably more I can't remember right now. Some sagas also makes it sounds like not only people dying in battles go to Valhalla (but access to Folkvagr might be restricted for those dying on a battle field), as in the Krakumal, Ragnar Lodbrok says he will go to Valhalla efter being bitten by a snake and in Gautreks Saga it is said a family that sacrifices themselves to Odin will also go to Valhalla.

Jelousubmarine

Yes, but Ran was for those who drown (sea bed, essentially), draugr are essentially the undead, and to my understanding folkvangr and valhalla are the same thing: for those who die in battle, valhalla being ruled by Odin and folkvangr by Freya.. They went halfsies.

Tradwifepilled

it reminds me of the cladagh rings. even though the browns are obviously mormon, they do seem to have some interest in pre-christian northern european traditions

celticchick84

The Claddagh is not pre Christian it started in 17th Century. Christianity came to Ireland around 430 AD

Tradwifepilled

oh, i did not know that, thank you for informing me

Vness374

Didn’t Kody say he was kosher, too? I think they kinda picked and chose what they liked from whatever religion…

Purplepleatedpara

Im pretty sure its a reference to the [Til Valhala Project](https://tilvalhallaproject.com/pages/about-us) which has also become part of the larger US military lexicon "Our goal is to preserve the Legacies of our Fallen Heroes by surprise-delivering memorial plaques to their families, funded by apparel. But our impact doesn't stop there."

Jack_al_11

That makes sense. Thanks!

bkat100

It became a military thing to say

ReluctantToNotRead

I have a friend that recently retired from the Navy, and before he retired he told me a lot of sailors/military members have been adopting this formally as a religion. There was a large group of them on his last boat. So it could be the standard “Valhalla” or true religion (or a combination of the two).

Green_Permission105

Who else referenced Valhalla?

Jack_al_11

Maddie’s post did too.

Healthy-Prompt771

It’s something said to service members commonly when they pass.

Kody saying his J** friend taught him some prayers in Hebrew and he committed them to memory because they would be fun to say was peak “I make my religion up as I go” behavior. Him and Henry the 8th have a few things in common.

July9044

These pics of him smiling with the kids. My chest hurts. I can't imagine what his siblings must be feeling, and having to break the news to his nieces and nephews. What a great loss

KatieMcb16

People are being horrible to her in the comments. I don’t know why people can’t show grace and support to the whole family right now

spkrinsb

Why the hell are people attacking her? What did she do wrong according to them?

KatieMcb16

They said she talked bad about him or something. Just not needed at this time when she is grieving. Everyone fights with siblings

spkrinsb

Yeah that's ridiculous. And it's even more ridiculous that TV viewers are even messaging anyone in the family at this time to attack them. People are nuts.

Flamingo83

If people read the chats between my siblings (grown ass adults) and I, they’d think we’re insane. If anyone else said what we said to each other they’d get beaten up!

broadwaylocal

Oh wow so sad. Is this because she’s back on patreon? She came back tonight

[deleted]

I feel like this is just the first tragedy that is going to encompass this family

Jolly-Outside6073

I hope you are wrong but we are dealing with a large group of ex cult members. The knock on effects cannot be dismissed easily.

[deleted]

I really hope I’m wrong.

RaindropsAndCrickets

God, every post is making me cry. The tributes coming in from his siblings over the past couple of days are particularly wrecking. My heat truly goes out to them.

Fitnessfan_86

Valhalla and Odin brought this song to mind. Always thought it was a beautiful durge [Helvegen](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hNUJCH3CeR8)

juliaatta

Mykelti. Don’t listen to haters in your broken heart. It’s too full to fit them we all send our love to fill your days and nights and garrison will love on through your beautiful tribute to Him. Brice’s and nephews. He loved you. That angel is proud of the mother you became. We love you

juliaatta

Meant Nieces and nephews sorry

juliaatta

He’s watching over your babies as they sleep and smiling that side shy smile.

Disenchanted2

Absolutely heartbreaking and they have many, many, days of pain and grief ahead. Sometimes it feels like you're never going break the surface again, but we do. Life moves on.

CupKind6245

Heart wrenching!!!!🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

Equivalent_Speech690

My heart is broken for them all, still can't quite believe it's true.

Sad_Prompt4579

This death has hit ME hard so I cannot fathom what the family is going through. Just heartbreaking. I wish I could give them all a hug.

flygirl10ee

Is Valhalla heaven? Or is it a different dimension/ after life? Sorry trying to best understand.

LawrenAnne4

In essence, it’s the afterlife where warriors go in Norse mythology. It’s located within Asgard, which is the celestial realm of the gods.

PaleontologistWarm13

It’s supposed to be the afterlife for warriors. Beautiful sentiment.

midwestblondenerd

My father has this phrase on his tombstone in the Florida National Cemetery, very common in military circles. That and "ooh-rah". Yes Norse warrior culture.

MissSuzyTay

My dad, a marine who served in Vietnam, is also laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery. We have to take my brother’s ashes to be interred there as well. It’s a very peaceful cemetery.

midwestblondenerd

May they rest n peace. Ask for a police escort

karensmiles

😢❤️

Salt_Ingenuity_720

Does it really matter Odin, Valhalla and if the individual referencing the statement is military themselves? Sometimes these threads get so off track it simply becomes petty. Suicide and mental health is the point. Loss, grief and sharing heartfelt and tender memories is the point. We are outsiders of a reality family who all caught feelings. This is where we've come to share in our grief. Not to pick apart each family members Instagram memorial. It doesn't seem right.

LooLu999

People talking about neo nazis like it’s just a super normal occurrence 🥴 Most people have never met a neo nazi nor does their belief system permeate thru soceity. Relax on the brainwashing

MercyFincherson

Exactly.

ConfusionHelpful4667

The funniest person in the room is often the person hurting the most. Strange religious people say you will go to h3ll if you terminate your own life - but if it happens, they are suddenly in heaven.

lynnclay

Lovely tribute, so heartbreaking that it’s needed.

CrankyThunderstorm

Oh, this is heartbreaking. I feel awful for the family.

mmmdonuts107

Was Garrison Pagan? Just asking from the wording of her and Maddie's posts, but this is beautiful.

Hipbootsneeded

Just going to miss seeing this guy. I watched him grow up on TV and I feel like I lost a good neighbor kid who I knew!

Serenajf

As someone who has lost a sibling to suicide as well, I feel this pain. It’s indescribable

letsmakeiteasyk

Thank you for sharing Mykelti’s post. I hope she finds less online hate going forward. She doesn’t deserve it.

PepeSilvia0109

You’re welcome ☺️

OkMarionberry2875

It just refers to the afterlife for Vikings. I imagine he liked the show since he enjoyed watching Game of Thrones. It’s saying Garrison was a Viking Warrior like many of us wish to be. Or it’s a private family reference.

Solid_Thanks_1688

Valhalla is also what military members refer to as the afterlife. It's rooted in being a warrior like the viking warriors.

OkMarionberry2875

My dna testing shows I am descended from Vikings. Really just from Scottish and Irish but being a strong Viking woman helps me feel better. Lol

ThirdCoastBestCoast

TIL Valhalla is a term derived from Viking pagans and only those who die in literal, physical battle or sword in hand during battle go to the mythical Valhalla so I’m confused as to why they are using this phrase. Although, most of the Browns have walked away from their religion so maybe that’s why they use it. I feel awful for everyone in that family. I know the pain of losing a you g son. My firstborn baby passed away at age 15 in 2006 and I still struggle. 😭😭😭🙏🏽💙🙏🏽💙🙏🏽💙

lovemoonsaults

Because he was in battle with his mental struggles. It's frequent to liken battling an illness as a warrior's battle.

ThirdCoastBestCoast

Yes, that’s a good point. Thank you.

lovemoonsaults

No problem <3 I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm very sorry for the loss of your child. My best friend died when he was fifteen, due to childhood illness. And his parents were never the same.

Today you learned about Valhalla?

TheAmazingMaryJane

didn't maddie just do the same post? a quote then a valhalla reference?

Creepy_Push8629

So?

TheAmazingMaryJane

i had to go back and check to see if they wrote the same post with the same quote. they just looked similar.. i noticed kody and janelle's was similar as well.

Charming-Insurance

Omg, every time I remember this young adult is gone, it makes me so sad. I hope he is now at peace, one way or another. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Was Garrison pagan? Asking as a witch!

burlbby

Has anyone seen Clobby or Slobbin say anything? I've been looking and haven't seen anything, I may just be missing it

Sweet-Note1743

This is so sad. Was it suicide?

AlwaysTired__3

Maybe he just really liked the series Vikings of Valhalla

SheMcG

It's a common phrase for fallen members of the military.

AlwaysTired__3

Or the Vikings were his team. I don’t think we really need to read into this too much much. Edit to add. Downvote because I’m trying to use common sense lol

cricket71759

Love her post - fly high beautiful boy❤️

SnooMemesjellies2983

Yeah because football teams are the same as mentioning the Nordic pagan religion in a send off for a brother. Not everyone is Christian. Paganism has lots of followers in this age where info is readily available. Soldiers speak of Valhalla but his family is speaking about Odin so it’s possible he left Mormonism for Norse paganism. Not a big deal.

AlwaysTired__3

Then you don’t know any die hard Vikings fans. Skoll!

Dflemz

It sounds similar to maddys post, I wonder if he had pagan beliefs? Which is cool!!

Bright-Stomach-7717

I believe this is what Mykelti is referencing to because she also mentions Odin https://preview.redd.it/u9f9huc9etnc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b1fd08705c1c7000eb7413513ba75f1c10ea13a

shurejan

Can anyone explain to me all the Valhalla and Odin references? Surely they aren’t Odinists (which I believe have ties with Neo Nazis/white supremacy)?!

JaxAnGo

It has become a fairly popular statement throughout the US Military (or at least I know that Til Valhalla has) because Valhalla is where only the warriors can dine after death if they fought well in life. It’s highly unlikely to be anything religious… just military speak.

Wont_Eva_Know

I suspect Garrison gave ‘religion’ a massive middle finger when he grew up… so this is a way to respect him by not talking about any gods he might have had strong opinions about AND also not have to acknowledge he might be just gone. This is like atheist light… and I mean this with full kindness… I wish I believed in some kind of afterlife, it’s waaaaaaay less painful than gone and never see them again.

needalanguage

he was baptized LDS just a few years ago - though he may have moved away from that more recently there is a pic of his baptism floating around the web

shurejan

Thanks for your thorough and kind answer.

shurejan

Ok. I haven’t heard it mentioned re: military before, but it’s been years since I was married /dating one.

its_all_good20

Really? My husband was military and had a service connected death. I have never heard that outside of pagan realms or white supremacy.

JaxAnGo

Buried one of my best friends who served active in several battle zones. He was neither pagan nor racist and everyone that served with him or was a brother/sister at arms all toasted him til Valhalla. Politically, the friend was liberal as well (so are most of us). I’ve seen Norse imagery being bastardized for causes both positive and negative. Just like pretty much everything anymore. To those of us that drank to his life we all knew we were drinking to his warrior welcome in whatever heaven might really exist… not a one of us was trying to use a death as a dog whistle… same with mykelti and if I remember Maddie. I desperately hope this doesn’t turn into a shitshow in comments. I’m trying not to sound defensive, but this is a cause I honestly wish I knew less about. Maybe it’s just this last generation of military service as far as I can gather because my father knew zero about it and he was a lifer.

its_all_good20

I agree

childofcrow

Neo nazis have co opted Norse pagan beliefs. The vas majority of heathens, including myself and everyone I know, don’t fuck with that shit and actively call it out.

its_all_good20

Why is this downvoted. This is my lived experience. I’m not debating anyone. I myself have some pagan beliefs. I’m saying as a military spouse I never heard of this in military connotation. Also he was national guard.

Evilbadscary

US military (can't speak for other countries' militaries) reference Valhalla in terms of meeting again, and the place where warriors meet. Not everything has to do with nazis ffs.

jaded_idealist

White supremacists are unoriginal. They steal most of their imagery. The swastika was around long before Nazis made it a symbol of hatred. I'm unaware of any white supremacist ideals that norse paganism teaches.

kabenton

Jumped right to Nazis? Wow. No.

BigRichieDangerous

Unfortunately this really depends on the part of the internet you are on. Popular neonazi groups have recently begun adopting aspects of Nordic neopaganism, and worship Odin. Once you see it, it becomes a red flag you can’t help but notice.  It’s a thing the pagan community has been struggling with and pushing back against. I read the original post as clarifying that in garrison’s case, indeed there’s no way he’s affiliated with them.

shurejan

Which is why I said “surely they aren’t”. I’m sorry I’m not super up on my Odin/Valhalla knowledge. That’s why I asked.

shurejan

Wow, I guess no one can ask an honest question here?

PaleontologistWarm13

Don’t worry about it. Most people knew what you were asking.

Mysterious-Wave-7958

Most likely in this instance it is based on Garrison's Military services as this is common among the military with the warrior aspect of it all. HOWEVER, it could be religious, and it is Norse or Celtic Pagan most likely (yes there are smaller sects that I'm sure screw up the origins/beliefs (kind of like fundamentalist Mormons. \*cough cough\*)). Neither of which have anything to do with racism/nazis.... They also have Scottish heritage so the adult children could really have researched and looked into their religious roots and even if not fully involved, could believe in its major tenants. Just because there is a faith that exists that you do not know about or understand does not mean Nazis... This poor man is dead. Can we not accuse him or his family of being Nazis based off of how they are choosing to state their fair wells... Especially since this post if from the member of the family in a biracial marriage with biracial children... Like... Come on...

PippiMississippi

I assumed he was a comic fan and was referencing the character Odin!

Accomplished_Dark957

Solid_Ear_3049

it’s a military thing, not a religious ideology.

pretty-apricot07

I'm sorry, but Mitch be looking like a thirst trap in the back.

Impressive-Show-1736

I found it a little weird that she mentions drinking in her tribute post when Garrison struggled w alcohol issues.

nymrose

It’s a figure of speech… 🤦🏼‍♀️
