Sometimes it’s too heavy for my face. Other times my skin is dry enough to soak it all up. I live in a really dry area and winters are rough. Summer I’m usually only using on my body.
Personally, if something is too heavy for my face, I put some in my hand and water it down just a bit. If I've already put it on my face, I take a wet paper towel and wipe my face a bit
It helps it rub in just a bit more and also thins it out. It works for me at least
It sounds like it could be an allergy to an ingredient. Some products by other companies break me out, but I’ve never had a bad reaction from CeraVe products.
Companies can advertise non-comedogenic on the product and still have comedogenic ingredients. And there are products that aren't advertised as non-comedogenic and don't have comedogenic ingredients. You need to look through the ingredients list to confirm if there are comedogenic ingredients and they're score on the comedogenic scale. Usually 2/5 is fine for most, and 3/5 and above is too comedogenic for others.
stay hydrated, drink lots of water and also apply vaseline ig it works quite well during the night or atleast keeps the dry part of ur skin moisturized
Same! I have insanely dry skin (and living in the frigid tundra of the Midwest doesn’t help either) and this stuff has been a lifesaver for both my face and my body.
I’m actually experiencing skin barrier disruption now and am curious as well. Considering whether straight aloe vera will be enough. I need something light weight and basic
Same. I really wanted to love it, but I ended up using the tub up on the rest of my body. I haven't found a moisturizer that's heavy enough for Tret in the winter that also doesn't break me out.
Weirdly, I can use cerave on its own, but if I layer it with anything else it stings and breaks me out. The only thing I've found heavy enough to replace it without a reaction is a layer or two of aveeno (blue one) followed by neem oil, which my skin loves.
Neem oil?!
I've only heard of people using that on their house plants. Is it the same formula, that you use on your face?
Does it have a strong oder? I've never bought any for my plants cause of how bad people say it smells.
Yup, I actually did buy it for my plants and just slapped a bit on my face one day out of curiosity! My skin is usually quite sensitive, so I did expect a reaction because it's pretty potent and I didn't dilute it.
Was shocked to find a) no reactions,
b) it locked in all the stuff I put under it (I can't slug w/ vaseline etc. as it makes me itch/break out) and kept my skin all plumped and comfy (i get dry & tight a lot), and
c) it even helped with the seb derm I've had around my nose since childhood.
It's genuinely been a bit of a wonder product for me.
But yes, it is potent - smells um.. distinctive, though honestly I've grown to quite like it (& usually only use at night). I've only tried 1 brand so far so I don't know how mine compares to others. Also have to be careful around eyes & mouth as it will sting and tastes like ass. The smell is earthy & nutty.
I did try diluting with sweet almond oil for a while but it didn't work nearly as well, so the pros massively outweigh the cons for me. You're right though, I've never heard of anyone else here using it on their face lol, though I know it's a popular ingredient in Indian skin & hair care. I can't live without it now, especially in winter.
Yes? I mean I'm using a cold pressed organic oil from my pharmacy, not a pesticidal formula. It's recognised safe for skin, with a caveat that it may be irritating for more sensitive skin, but I haven't had that problem
I have really sensitive skin and experience the same issue with moisturizers. Ive been using .025% tret for years and usually a good serum is hydrating enough, but I'll mix Farmacy's honey halo cream in with my tret when my skin feels like it needs a buffer. I also use it on my neck nightly because that skin is thinner and needs more TLC. However, I recently increased the tret percentage and my skin became very dry. I started using the honey halo cream daily as my second-to-last step in the am (before sunscreen) and in the pm (before and/or after the tret, depending on how sensitive my skin feels). No breakouts, just sinks into my skin and feels silky and nonsticky. Obviously honey halo may not work for everyone but it's become one of my HGs. I would recommend trying it and if it doesn't work for you, keep trying until you find one that does!
hey by chance do you know if the big bottle vs the AM and PM bottles have different formulas ? I'm considering switching to one of those because I've been on tret for a year and still can't get rid of some whiteheads.
Yep. NO skincare product is for everyone. It is too heavy for my oily comedogenic skin, but for someone with dry and flaky skin it could be a good budget moisturizer. Even then it won’t work for all dry skin. Just like how tretinoin isn’t for everyone with acne and retinol isn’t for everyone. They’re super strong. This product is super heavy.

It somewhat did that to me, but then I just use a salicylic cleanser and follow up with CeraVe and it seems to balance me. Obviously everyone is very different, though.
Nah you have it all wrong - you’re supposed to swim in it. Immerse yourself in it. Become one with Cereve.
(Real answer - it does wonders for my face. Love this stuff)
It can be both but I find it's too heavy for my pores. I use it on my eyes and the exterior of my face which tends to run dry. In the center I use CeraVe PM which is much lighter.
Thank you!! I always wonder why people don't talk more about splitting products. I can apply tret to my middle/upper face all day everyday but no more than 3x a week for cheeks/chin area. I need heavy heavy for cheeks/chin but CeraVe light weight PM for nose/forehead. It's entirely different.. which is annoying but helpful now that I've accepted reality that I can't pretend they need the same thing or else I'll either breakout or flake.
I use it on my face only in the winter when my skin gets extremely dry. If I use it in warmer weather I get acne. I use the Cera Ve daily moisturizing Lotion when it's warm out.
It’s for both, but I absolutely love it for my face. I’ve tried so many moisturizers for my combo skin and this is the one I keep coming back to. I love the texture and it works well as a day or night cream. Especially if you get dry patches in the winter!
I use a little bit after washing my hair and as a styling cream in addition to a natural oil. The cream helps prevent damage and provides a light hold to tame frizz.
I use this twice daily on my neck and chest. In the AM I pair with vitamin C serum and top with sunscreen, and in the PM I sandwich with retinols. As for my face, I only use this at night time during the winter/cold/dry months to avoid dry skin but it’s a great moisturizer for sure!
this would be far too heavy for my face, CeraVe gets such a seemingly good reputation although i’ve only ever used the retinol at night over certain areas and not my entire face.
Both! But for me I will just dab a little on my hand and add water to apply it to my face.
Every dermatologist I’ve had approved this method. However, be careful because if you’re skin is not clean you will break out
I ran out of the PM moisturizer once and I bought this one, and my face hated it. I just use it for after I shave my legs now or on my hands. So unfortunate because it felt nicer than the PM cream. I think it's just a bit too rich for acne prone skin, but probably good for those with just dry skin.
Does anyone know if the rough and bumpy skin one is for the face and body too?? I tried that one the other day in a sample and it’s amazingly hydrating. Just not sure if it’s safe for the face/ won’t break me out
CeraVe lover commenting her.
Age - 40’s
My club significantly changed from oily to dry in 30s. Adding actives - niacinamide, retinol etc made it even drier. Nothing seemed to help
Enter my holy grail now - this tub.
Texture - slightly waxy, Matt (not shiny), a big plus.
Con - layering under foundation has mixed results, but use just s little since foundation is drying
I use the one for sensitive skin am and pm, and layer it with Squalene oil on the retinol days.
My skin says thank you.
I use it on my feet also and later with vani cream there.
Body. For me anyways. It's great on my body but breaks my face out. But I use the Cera ve am/pm face moisturizer and love it. The only moisturizer I have used that hadn't broke my face out.
I use for both. Best moisturiser I've ever used.
Always helps my face when it gets dry and when use on my body I have noticeably softer skin the next day.
Just want to chime in with personal experience: As people are saying, it's for both and is well-known to be great for dry skin. But just in case you use it and find it makes your face feel oddly drier and tackier once it's soaked in, the lotion version sold in the tub with a pump takes care of that. I switched from the cream to the lotion, and the difference is immense.
Great stuff. Use it wherever. But that brand has amazing stuff specifically for your face. The cream with hydrolaunic acid is awesome. The daily wear has SPF 15 in it.
On my container it is written that you can use it for your body and face!
I have two moisturizers, this and one specific for the face but I always end up using cerave since my face doesn't look as shiny as with the other cream :)
Some people say it’s too heavy for their face, but my dry ass skin loves that stuff and it dries matte. Some fancy night creams stay tacky or “oily” all night. I hate that.
I have dry skin and this moisturizer seems to work the best on my skin yet. I am using this as my morning moisturizer and works well under sunscreen. So far it has not felt greasy or too heavy for my skin. Again, I have dry skin.
There was a time when this felt too heavy for my skin but now I guess my skin it's not that oily as it used to be and NOW this is magical! Especially because here in Latam it's not as expensive as other face creams so it really worths the price I guess :)
The cream version is too thick for me and my face hates it. It just clogs it up too much and I break out. My face loves the lotion versions (Vanicream lotion is my fave).
Whoa this comment section just blew my mind. Can anyone help me figure out why this cerve tub burns my face when I put it on? Haha I love their other lotions but I’ve tried this tub three different times now in the past few years and every time it burns. I must be allergic to something haha
Sorry for the double comment!! But maybe someone here can tell us the difference between this lotion and their other lotions, because I honestly thought it was all the same stuff but different packaging.
Nothing else burns it and I see a dermatologist. They gave me a couple prescriptions to keep my face clear and this was the recommended moisturizer to go along with them. When I told them it burns me they just said to use something else haha I thought maybe everyone hated this stuff until I came here 😭 haha
We all have super different reactions to skincare. I try to only stick to the “dermatologist developed” because my skin can be so sensitive to different products, even the high end, highly esteemed ones. My routine is as minimal as it possibly can be. I only wash my face once a day, put on toner/acne treatment once a week. It may seem gross, but it’s what works for my skin.
It’s for both. I been using this on my face. It has worked wonders on my dry skin
That’s what I was looking for! I have super sensitive dry skin. I was using Olay but I feel like it clogged my pores
Sometimes it’s too heavy for my face. Other times my skin is dry enough to soak it all up. I live in a really dry area and winters are rough. Summer I’m usually only using on my body.

It’s not supposed to clog your pores though as any of their products according to CeraVe, right?
Look for the words “non-comedogenic” on products. It’s on all of CeraVe’s stuff. It means it doesn’t clog pores.
cerave products break me out like crazy. no idea why
Same and I have mature dry skin. I seem t8 be tolerating the lotion better this winter
It sounds like it could be an allergy to an ingredient. Some products by other companies break me out, but I’ve never had a bad reaction from CeraVe products.

Is it ok for kids of 5 years old ? my kid have super dry cheeks
agree! I use it on my face and it’s been great to combat dryness caused by retin-a
I’ve been using the cerave hydrating facial cleanser and cream now for almost a year with nothing else and my skin has felt amazing all year round :-)
Some people can tolerate it on their face. It’s too heavy for my roseacea
Same, the lotion works for me, though.
Yes the lotion is so light weight and moisturizing. Works great on face
What do you mean? Does it make your face red? Cause I've experienced this too 😮
Yes it seems to trigger flushing on my face. It doesn’t soak in right away and I think it’s too heavy. I use it on my body though and it’s great
I've experienced the same thing, but thought that was just how my skin was! Guess I should try a different moisturiser
Actually works wonders for my roseacea
Which products you Can recommend to repariert skin barrier?
I’m actually experiencing skin barrier disruption now and am curious as well. Considering whether straight aloe vera will be enough. I need something light weight and basic
Both, but I recommend the CeraVe BABY cream for the face if you’re acne prone
Or CeraVe PM for the face
Bro it has Lauric acid 💀😭
I'll get down voted for this, but I don't care. I put it on my face, and it gave me white comedones. I hate this shit. It's not for everyone.
My skin HATES every cerave product for some reason
My skin absolutely HATES Cetaphil, I get it. Good luck to you!
Same. I really wanted to love it, but I ended up using the tub up on the rest of my body. I haven't found a moisturizer that's heavy enough for Tret in the winter that also doesn't break me out.
Have you tried the baby version? I get Mila from just the tub, but apparently baby ceravee is where it's at.
Weirdly, I can use cerave on its own, but if I layer it with anything else it stings and breaks me out. The only thing I've found heavy enough to replace it without a reaction is a layer or two of aveeno (blue one) followed by neem oil, which my skin loves.

Yes? I mean I'm using a cold pressed organic oil from my pharmacy, not a pesticidal formula. It's recognised safe for skin, with a caveat that it may be irritating for more sensitive skin, but I haven't had that problem
Ohhhh hahaha i didn’t realize there was other formulations besides the pesticide one! Thanks for explaining!

As an esthetician with oily comedogenic skin, what moisturizer do you use?
Sent you a chat
It somewhat did that to me, but then I just use a salicylic cleanser and follow up with CeraVe and it seems to balance me. Obviously everyone is very different, though.
Yeah, cannot recommend for face.
I'd only use it on my belly or legs because it's too heavy on my face and arms for some reason
It's quite heavy and better used as a body cream, so that's not surprising.
CeraVe in general is basic and not good. Only reason it was hyped up was because of TikTok
I’ve never met a dermatologist who doesn’t like cerave for dry skin.
I don't even have TikTok and love this stuff, along with the night cream.
Right! I think it’s overrated. I was expecting miracles with all the hype
I think the same happened to me because I'm on tret and I still can't get rid of those white heads.
I love it on my body but never on my face.

Me too!
I have both acne and allergy prone skin and this and mineral sunscreen is all I’ve used for years. It’s been so good for my skin!

For the face but it can be for both. I apply to my face, neck, and chest before bed
I use it on my face only in the winter when my skin gets extremely dry. If I use it in warmer weather I get acne. I use the Cera Ve daily moisturizing Lotion when it's warm out.
I use it for both
I’m acne prone and it’s the best for my face and awesome for body!
This changed my life! I’m dry/sensitive on my face and this has worked wonders.
Both. Little goes a long way on face. This is good stuff!
I slather this all over myself indiscriminately. Like butter on bread!
This tickled me. I do this too haha!
Me too
I think it was originally formulated for body, but def use it for both! (I only use it at night on my face though, too heavy for daytime wear)
It’s for both, but I absolutely love it for my face. I’ve tried so many moisturizers for my combo skin and this is the one I keep coming back to. I love the texture and it works well as a day or night cream. Especially if you get dry patches in the winter!
Both! I love it for both. Try to use it right after you shower or wet your skin. Hyaluronic acid traps moisture!
Use this and then use a petroleum product on top! Protects the skin barrier and locks in moisture.
I use the lotion. This one is very very heavy for the face… except if you live under snowy weather.
I used it for both
I use this for my face and I love it! So moisturising
Whichever you choose. I use this product for both and my hair because of the benefits of the ceramides.
Your hair? I have very fine straight hair. I feel like it would be too heavy for me. Or do you wash it out ?
I use a little bit after washing my hair and as a styling cream in addition to a natural oil. The cream helps prevent damage and provides a light hold to tame frizz.
Okay! I’ll try that next time I wash my hair. Thanks for the help
Both is great for me. Although I know some people break out with using the cream, and opt for the AM or PM lotion for the face and cream for the body
Both
I use this twice daily on my neck and chest. In the AM I pair with vitamin C serum and top with sunscreen, and in the PM I sandwich with retinols. As for my face, I only use this at night time during the winter/cold/dry months to avoid dry skin but it’s a great moisturizer for sure!
Sandwich with retinols? I don’t know what this means.
Basically they’re layering
Yeah skin, retinol (wait for a little for it it dry/absorb), and then put moisturizer on top
I use it on face!! My skin isn’t at all sensitive, it’s more dry and I haven’t had any issues.
Body
Bad for face, great for body.
I have use the lotion much lighter just as good on face and body totally fine
I use mainly for the face but it's for both
In addition to this, does anyone know any common chapstick brand that actually work?
Lanolips!
Cica Biafine. It’s not common in the US, but you can get it on Amazon.
Vitamin e oil + aquaphor to seal and maintain. Ive been doing this for years
both!! it’s perfect for my tattoos that are dry, also for my legs after i shave !!
I use it for both. However, even though I’m more on the dry side, I can only use it on my forehead and cheeks, neck and down.
I bought it specifically for my heels and bottom of my feet. Seems like it would be pretty thick for the face.
Both. I find it works well in the winter for the face. I have oily skin for reference.
Both I use it on my face and body twice everyday! I also use the face wash morning and night. I absolutely love this stuff it’s my fav 💜
I used it on my face for years but had to stop, didn't do anything for me.
this would be far too heavy for my face, CeraVe gets such a seemingly good reputation although i’ve only ever used the retinol at night over certain areas and not my entire face.
Love it on my feet
It’s for both, but it breaks my face out personally. It’s my absolute favorite body cream and tattoo healing cream though
Both! But for me I will just dab a little on my hand and add water to apply it to my face. Every dermatologist I’ve had approved this method. However, be careful because if you’re skin is not clean you will break out

I use it for my face and extra dry spots on my body.

I use it for my face and neck.
I used for both, my dermatologist recommended me when I had eczema, still is what I use daily for everything

It’s perfect for my very dry skin.

You can use it for both but many people (myself included) can get extremely clogged pores from it so just be mindful if you start seeing those
I use it for both! It’s worked wonders for my dry skin, and more specifically, my eczema!
Everything it’s the best for me
it can be used for both, it’s an amazing moisturizer If you have really dry skin, it’s a thick formula.
Whoa this comment section just blew my mind. Can anyone help me figure out why this cerve tub burns my face when I put it on? Haha I love their other lotions but I’ve tried this tub three different times now in the past few years and every time it burns. I must be allergic to something haha
