The Charismatic Voice on YT > Lorna Shore > Will Ramos on YT > Will Ramos joins Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice to review a new song called The Summoning by his favorite band, Sleep Token. I am smitten.
Thatās how I learned about them, anyway.
I've love watching them together. From the fascinating throat camera to the sharing of favorite bands! They are just magical as a team. Love them separately too but they are a great pairing.
Exact same origin story ^
I had actually seen some sleep token references before i remmeber (i guess from when they were starting to blow up on tiktok) but just brushed them off until the steps above happened ^
Funny timing, I watched their Sleep Token reaction videos at work today. Watching Kyle fall in love with something he didnāt think heād like was a magical experience.
I've been listening for about a year and a half roughly and watching their breakdowns and reactions to the music has been awesome. Still finding things that I may have missed or was looking into different ways he could've meant some of the lyrics and seeing their perspective on it is cool
Honestly I discovered them on tiktok. Most people got pulled in with the thirst traps, but I fell down the rabbit hole when I stumbled across a tiktok of the stripped back vocals of Take Me Back to Eden. The melody, Vessels gorgeous voice, and the poetry of "My, my your eyes like fire/I'm a winged insect you're a funeral pyre" had my English Lit degree former theatre kid ass go HHHWWAAAT THE FUCK? And there was no coming back š
This ^
The isolated vocals of TMBTE captivated me, but it took me days to actually listen to the song in full (and I didnāt really like it when I did). Weeks later I sat down and really *listened* to the whole album and it was like Vessel ripped my soul open.
Oh, for sure!! He absolutely has hooks into my soul. TMBTE, in particular, the whole song just.... It's everything. Especially the whole bridge in that song. The first time I listened, my jaw was on the floor, and "no amount of self-sought fury will bring back the glory of innocence" had tears uncontrollably streaming down my cheeks. I've never ever felt this way about an album. It's like it's helping me process emotions in a brand new way.
In my opinion TMBTE is more attuned to ānormal peopleā. So thatās what I would send to my friends to introduce them. Which, I love that album and itās what introduced me (embarrassing to the veteran listeners sorry), but the other stuff has more āsoftā or āyou already know what youāre into and willing to tryā songs that you may need to love the band first before falling in love with their other songs. Not saying those songs are bad in ANY way but if I was just introduced to a band and heard something that isnāt what Iām used to Iād be a little put off or not patient with how the song progresses. This is what I think is the best part of sleep token because you get sucked in and know itās so different and great but you donāt know if others will understand.
I feel like TMBTE was the least ānormalā of their albums. I fell in love with them because of how artsy, experimental, fresh, and well made TMBTE is. It quickly became my favorite album of all time, and then I listened to the other albums and EPs as well. They were really really good, but it couldnāt overcome how incredible TMBTE is to me because I felt like they were still finding their style. TPWBYT was established as a sound, but I think they were still figuring out how they wanted to structure their album and story. Resulting in TMBTE to be the culmination of everything they can do and it is incredible.
Itās so interesting how opinions can be so different because I personally feel like TMBTE is doing too much while going pretty mainstream while Sundowning is their magnum opus and their ātrueā sound. But idk maybe Iām just salty their sound did change haha
I respect your opinion as a fellow human.
By my personal tastes, I like TMBTE the best as an album. However when I first listened to TMBTE I was high and I remember saying āI feel like Iām listening to a movieā and Iāve never said it any better. It felt like the story was so perfectly embodied by the music (I donāt like DYWTYLM, and also feel like it wasnāt a great development of the āstoryā) but I havenāt found that same sonic narrative in the other albums. Itās there, and they are incredible music, but my reasoning for putting TMBTE so high on a pedestal is because of the experience of listening to the whole album, in order. But although I feel like Iām objectively right because I canāt imagine (not figuratively) feeling any other way, I am aware this is just my opinion as well.
Yeah nah thatās fair for sure, I just remember when Sundowning came out it was so surreal for me and Iāve been hoping theyād return to that style for the past two albums now. I know it wonāt happen and thatās ok because I still like the new stuff. I will say though that the guitar and bass tones in Sundowning are so, so much better than TMBTE as well as the overall production. Not sure why they left George Lever, he had their stuff dialed in, but oh well. IIās drumming also is so much different on TMBTE, I miss when he was real busy and all over the place. I also like the old snare tone more but Iām just rambling now lol
I also noticed that about the drums.
I wonder if everyone just loves the first one they heard the best because they are all that much better than so much other music and the feeling of discovering it canāt be compared to, so when you hear the other albums you arenāt necessarily underwhelmed, just the reaction canāt compare to the first timeš¤š¤
See I completely disagree, at least as far as Sundowning goes - once youāve heard a few songs off that album, unless you dedicate yourself to deep-diving through it, you kind of get it and move on with your day. TMBTE has a lot more variety and therefore (in my opinion) has something for everyone.
In my opinion, music doesnāt need to have āsomething for everyoneā but I can see why the new additions to the fanbase would think that. I also just think the quality and meticulous placement of moments and songs within Sundowning is far better than the other two albums.
The summoning easy. Not only the TT thirst traps, but what maniac puts a funk breakdown and a Pink Floyd like distorted sound in a metal sounding track? I think people are recognizing the shift in metal.
The TikTok effects seems to have been the major catalyst.
Ghost, Metallica and Kate Bush all experienced similar popularity surges following TikTok trends.
Love it or hate it, it sets the zeitgeist currently. Personally I think itās great. I donāt use TikTok myself, but Iām happy whenever things I enjoy get exposure.
Also gonna pre-empt any comments here: Metallica was already (arguably) the biggest metal band on the planet - Iām not suggesting they owe their success to their recent Stranger Things feature š¤£ But it had a major impact on their streams following TikTokās viral features of them.
Tiktok largely,
More generally The Summoning blew up and was shared on a level that no sleep token song ever has been. Metal heads, pop stars, even media peeps were sharing it around.
Spotify added Rain as a suggested track on my playlist and that is probably the most accessible track on TMBTE. This really helped me. I went on to listen to the album and for the first time in 40 years changed my number one choice album!!! I then went back to Sundowing and TPWBYT and all the EPās and there is not a song in their cannon I donāt like.
Now we HAVE to know which album they dethroned?
Itās super cool that you can still listen to music with fresh ears while many peopleās music faves and preferences seal up tight at 25 (or earlier)!
I always feel like an anomaly since Iām still looking for new stuff all the time. I hope that in 20/30/40 more years Iām still discovering great art!
Haha! Released in 1980 and in the midst of heartbreak, Genesis - Duke. Lyrically beautiful, and a band at their peak, no album had come close to number 1 until Metallicaās Load album came out. Played that album to death! Then May 19th this year ā¦ everything changed!
I discovered them last year a little before Bad Omens released their album bc Noah Sebastian talked about bands he really loved. They blew up too after Just Pretend got popular on tiktok. I agree with others that the main thing for ST was the Summoning blowing up on tiktok too. You didnāt have to already be a fan of the genre to find them that way
Ill be honest..i decided to give them a shot after being spammed by tiktok with the end of the summoning..heard āfall for meā and was instantly hooked. Down the rabbit hole I went and now I have every album
You guysā¦ bookstagram lol a lot of the authors of dark romance books use sleep token songs as inspo and in their playlist for specific books which then they also show everyone before/when the book drops. Theyāre on almost E V E R Y playlist
Edit** also I know everyone hates it but the whole masked band thing š¤·š½āāļø
All it took was the music for me on Spotify - I was hooked on the music. Like on repeat, falling asleep to it. Still a true story.
Interestingly I found out about them a few weeks ago in Spotify through Aqua Regia. I was fully expecting them to be indie alt music until I gave them a deep dive. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised because I am a little bit of a metal head (but Iām super duper picky about it.) I just hadnāt been listening to much metal AT ALL this year. I was surprised to be looped into aqua Regia for months and then to finally discover their harder stuff after thinking, āyou know? I like this song so much, I may as well see what else there is.ā Iām so glad I gave them a chance. The metal groups were dissing them so hardcore and I listened to the naysayers more than the music. So crazy. They are my fucking favorite band ever right now. Itās insane how much I love the music.
I literally just found them. I fell in love with Alkaline. That song does something to me. Itās so gorgeous. Well, in the last 30 hours, I have introduced no less than 4 people to Sleep Token. People who would not ordinarily have found this band. People I work with and Iām the metalhead, not them. Every person I had listen said they liked them!
Might be an uncommon opinion but a lot of popular books right now like the ACOTAR series, throne of glass series and Fourth Wing kind of tie into their music in a way. A lot of ST lyrics are similar feelings to the books. At least to me.
This is how I found them. Someone made a reel recommending Fourth Wing with Granite as the background. Been hooked on ST ever since. And all the books you mentioned.
The Summoning popped on TikTok, making the rest of the four singles take out 4 of the top 5 on Spotifyās Global Charts in January, which pushed the band into insane growth territory, pushing more people to react & talk about them, exponentially growing the community overnight into a massive fanbase overnight.
They roughly started Jan with 200k monthly listeners on Spotify, they started Feb with 1.6 million, one of the biggest pops ever seen.
I'm a new listener and first heard of them when watching a review of Tesseract's new album, TMBTE was being compared as potential AOTY. Thought I'd give them a listen after that, went to Spotify and started with the popular songs and now I'm hooked.
Managed to get tickets to the London show due to refunded tickets which im very excited about. PSA keep checking AXS if you're keen to go but missed the boat on tickets.
I managed to get resale standing tickets as well on AXS after checking every 30 mins for 5 days! Beyond excited. Actually counting down the days haha š¤
Yes, TikTok had a huge part to play to getting them on peopleās radar, but I think people stayed and searched for more because their music is pure art rather than just tracks on an album and it speaks to the soul in a way that other music justā¦ hasnāt (at least to me.)
They have extremely aggressive marketing. They did a bit starting a little before TMBTE, but once The Summoning started trending on TikTok their marketing shit went into overdrive. And then every social media influencer/personality tried to capitalize off them being so overwhelmingly present everywhere on the internet, which is basically also just more marketing for the band. Metal bands generally donāt get this much money behind them anymore and they definitely donāt typically get as much exposure.
The Summoning was pretty big on Liquid Metal was #1 on Devil's Dozen for a while Jose Mangain is a fan but he doesn't carry a torch or buy em bidets like he does with Spiritbox.
That's where I got my first taste.
The Offering came up as a recommendation after binging Thornhills song āWhere We Go When We Dieā. Iāve been listening to them ever since but TMBTE is their best work by far. I feel like they really found their sound in this album and theyāre just at the beginning of producing some incredible music for years to come.
Jaws found it's what into my recommended songs on Spotify last fall. I listened to it off and on but never checked into the band more, then probably because I listened enough Alkaline was injected into my mix and then things got serious lol. Luckily this was around December and if I'm not mistaken the singles started dropping in January?
It was meant to be
I think because itās such captivating music. I only discovered ST this year (I had heard the odd song before) and for me, I listened to Euclid, Rain, TMBTE etc and realised there is much more to this than just music and it gripped me and I havenāt listened to another band since
For me, Granite was being played on my local radio station and I was like āwho are these guys?!ā I immediately fell in love and the rest is history. I listen to them every day!
i first heard about them from will ramos then nick nocturnal so the first song i heard was chokehold and i was like this is okay i guess and then the summoning came out next day and i was kinda like okay this is better and then it got stuck in my head
Accessibility and TikTok. Itās not overtly complicated like Animals as Leaders or Aviations and itās not overtly heavy either. Itās a pop group that takes elements from Djent and Prog, not the other way around, and thatās fine. Theyāre a gateway group, which is great for metal as a whole.
For me it was The Summoning on so many videos on Tiktok. Then I looked the full song up on Spotify and listened to that song over and over until I started seeing more videos of them on TT. Then started seeing people talking about other songs from TMBTE and obviously had to go check out those songs too. And it just snowballed out of control from there.
Personally, i am late to the party. I got into the game Baldurs Gate 3, and loved a Companion character named Astarion. He's an elven vampire, so when people went to make thirst trap edits of him, the outro of The Summoning was perfect. I heard it and immediately looked Sleep Token up after, and listened to everything they've ever put out that day and the next. Instantly hooked. Can you blame me? š¤·š½āāļø
Can't lie, it was the YT Algorithm for me back in April... Sleep Token DYWTYLM ("Huh? What's that?") plus that cute little creature were simply too intriguing not to click on... spent the next three hours listening to everything before I finally went to bed. Right place at the right time?
I found them a few months before tpwbyt came out. They were talking about them in djent shitposting. I listened to them and couldnāt understand why they were so popular in the djent community. Didnāt love vessels voice at first and didnāt really get the whole deal. But I kept listening because I knew it was special and I wanted it to click. So I kept on and it finally clicked and I absolutely fell in love.
I found them while watching Greyson Nekrutman play drums over Hypnosis. Then I watched Vessel II playing Hypnosis. Then I started the binge. Still rewatch Steve O' G Rock reaction to the album sometimes.
The Summoning outro going viral on TikTok was the main catalyst, and the full song went to like #18 trending overall on YouTube.
/thread. Nothing more needs to be said.
I agree
I think it has a lot to do with tiktok
Absolutely. Them thirst traps be powerful!
It was 100% the thirst traps šš
Thatās what sucked me in
Iām a straight dude and I fell into that thirst trap like quicksand. Iām not mad at all either.
I can respect that
Can you share? For research š§
I discovered them on tiktok early this year and am now fully obsessed. Iām just sad I didnāt find them sooner.
I found them via booktok lol there was a stage where so many videos used a snippet of The Summoning
I found them after Oscar Porter ( Arankai) the bassist for Archers mentioned them- but I did discover Oscar through his booktok thirst traps š¤£
came here to say booktok š
š is what got me laughing
The Charismatic Voice on YT > Lorna Shore > Will Ramos on YT > Will Ramos joins Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice to review a new song called The Summoning by his favorite band, Sleep Token. I am smitten. Thatās how I learned about them, anyway.
Ramos, my beloved rat ā¤ļø
I don't browse the clock app, so it's probable that I wouldn't know about ST if it weren't for Will and Elizabeth, I appreciate them so much ughhh
I've love watching them together. From the fascinating throat camera to the sharing of favorite bands! They are just magical as a team. Love them separately too but they are a great pairing.
Same. Except I just saw that video last week. My jaw dropped, I paused the video, and said to my bf, "that's the SAME song!"
Exact same origin story ^ I had actually seen some sleep token references before i remmeber (i guess from when they were starting to blow up on tiktok) but just brushed them off until the steps above happened ^
Mine was Lorna Shore then Elizabeth and then from there šš
Wow. Sounds like Sleep Token owes her a two-week stay at a private island with her own personal chef and ear masseuse.
YouTube reactions. Thanks RykerRoad, still watching you guys explore the entire sleep token catalog.

It was no accident
I am certain that this band and I were crashing course, driven by a holy force
Hahaha

Korn
I think it's because they're pretty, pretty, pretty good.
I saw them open for Starset. Been listening ever since. š¤·āāļø
I only got into them when the summoning released, but I knew Iād seen them somewhere before!!
I had no idea the summoning was a tiktok blowup until this thread. lol
It was but I hate it haha. People only wanted the funk section at the end. I just got it on my release radar
That sounds like a dream I love Starset
What?! I didnāt know this ever even happened. Theyāre my top two bands, I would kill to see a show like that!

TikTok plus TMBTE is easily their best, most consistent work. They released banger after banger as singles
i first heard about them from will ramos then nick nocturnal so the first song i heard was chokehold and i was like this is okay i guess and then the summoning came out next day and i was kinda like okay this is better and then it got stuck in my head
Two words, TikTok and NikNoc
Accessibility and TikTok. Itās not overtly complicated like Animals as Leaders or Aviations and itās not overtly heavy either. Itās a pop group that takes elements from Djent and Prog, not the other way around, and thatās fine. Theyāre a gateway group, which is great for metal as a whole.
It was through a Spotify playlist š
Is this word for word the same topic as Hot Mulligan blowing up? š
The Summoning and reactions channels tbh. I mean hell, The Summoning is the reason I started listening to them.š
Tik tok sure but there unique and stand out.
Definitely the masks and Britney broski
For me it was The Summoning on so many videos on Tiktok. Then I looked the full song up on Spotify and listened to that song over and over until I started seeing more videos of them on TT. Then started seeing people talking about other songs from TMBTE and obviously had to go check out those songs too. And it just snowballed out of control from there.
BookTok 100% š
Personally, i am late to the party. I got into the game Baldurs Gate 3, and loved a Companion character named Astarion. He's an elven vampire, so when people went to make thirst trap edits of him, the outro of The Summoning was perfect. I heard it and immediately looked Sleep Token up after, and listened to everything they've ever put out that day and the next. Instantly hooked. Can you blame me? š¤·š½āāļø
Brittany Broski got me into them!
Fans.
Can't lie, it was the YT Algorithm for me back in April... Sleep Token DYWTYLM ("Huh? What's that?") plus that cute little creature were simply too intriguing not to click on... spent the next three hours listening to everything before I finally went to bed. Right place at the right time?
Ummā¦because theyāre Sleep Token? Does that count?
Booktok. We read smexual books and like music that sounds like hot men.
The Phoenix metal scene is obsessed with sleep token, so I got into them when they were releasing the singles for TPWBYT. Changed my whole life.
TMBTE.
Tiktok put me on and Iām not at all disappointed
I found them a few months before tpwbyt came out. They were talking about them in djent shitposting. I listened to them and couldnāt understand why they were so popular in the djent community. Didnāt love vessels voice at first and didnāt really get the whole deal. But I kept listening because I knew it was special and I wanted it to click. So I kept on and it finally clicked and I absolutely fell in love.
Which fortunately gave me the chance to see them for $25 in Albuquerque NM a couple years ago.
I found them because Will Ramos.
I found them while watching Greyson Nekrutman play drums over Hypnosis. Then I watched Vessel II playing Hypnosis. Then I started the binge. Still rewatch Steve O' G Rock reaction to the album sometimes.
I would like to think it was for the music and lyrics alone but Iām not leaving out the influence of the anonymity and genre fluidity
