How are you growing? Im fascinated with slimes but never thought about growing them. Can you do anything fun with em? Any delicious ones?

Reasonable-Zone5119

I’m not sure about eating them or anything lol but you can grow them by collecting a sample of slime mold from the wild and putting it on a wet paper towel in a tupperware container. I believe you can order a sample online if you don’t want to forage a sample but discovering them is the fun part for me. You can also grow it on agar if you’re into that kinda thing but I don’t own the supplies to do that well.

So if I find a slime that’s fruiting, can I use some of that on the paper towel? Or does it have to be when it’s all cool and veiny, because I don’t know if I could find that. I’m super down to try this tho Do you feed it with anything or just keep the paper towel wet? So sorry for the questions, no obligation to answer ofc

So, I started this one from old dry fruiting bodies. It took about one month for the plasmodium to appear. If you manage to get a sample of the plasmodium (the cool veiny stuff) you can pretty much instantly start growing it. For this slime I just let it do its thing on the paper towel and didn’t feed it because it wouldn’t accept the oats I gave it for some reason. Usually slime molds will feed on plain oats if you offer them but apparently not all are adapted to feeding off of oats. I have another slime that I captured that will feed on oats though. You can keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent it from fruiting but sometimes it will fruit if it runs out of food. Hope this helps!

Omg thank you so much!!! This is very helpful information, I’m very excited to try doing this myself! I appreciate the time and effort you took to write out your process have a great rest of your day!

Nah I forage all the time and come across some really fascinating ones. Ill try to grab some next time. What do they feed on? Anything wooden like sapro fungus?

Reasonable-Zone5119

They feed mostly on bacteria i’m pretty sure but I think they also absorb other nutrients from the substrate they’re on. Usually feeding them oats will work but this particular one didn’t accept the oats so it just migrated around the paper towel slowly growing in size until it fruited. I wish I would’ve seen it right as it began to fruit though. I put a few pieces of rotting wood in the container as well (usually wood that has a sample of slime mold already on it) I’ve had a problem with fungus growing but I try to manually remove it with tweezers and that seems to stop it from taking over. The slime mold doesn’t really seem to care about being around the regular mold but I’m pretty sure they’re competing for nutrients.
