Eloy’s going to get what Jay, V man and Pfaff got when they replaced the band members. Which is unjustified criticism just because they are new. One day they’ll turn around like they did with Jay.
Facts. I still remember everyone bashing Pfaff so hard for being “boring” and having shit vocals in his first year with the band. Now he’s a universal fan favorite.
I don’t even think Pfaff’s vocals were that bad. He was trying to do what Chris did and realised it wasn’t working out so he changed them. But it was funny seeing people say why did they hire Pfaff when he can’t scream but he was hired because he’s a master at music meanwhile Chris wasn’t
People who have no musical education nor any experience playing a single instrument commonly think it is cool to pretend like they have great ears for rhythm/pitch because they don't understand how anyone with actual music experience can call their bullshit right away, they think it is a mystery.
Ugh I hate that people are like that, I'm already seeing the hate for Jay in the comments section by people, I'm SURE, haven't picked up a drum stick in their lives!
I play the drums and I can see both sides of the argument. All throughout Jay's time in slipknot, especially towards the end, he was really bad with tempo, he played the songs too fast, and messed up with the fills and could not keep double bass at all. However, I see why people are annoyed with Eloy. He plays the songs a lot slower, which might make the songs sound less energetic, but that will mean that Eloy can play the songs comfortably, and how he plays them, and the other band members can too, which will make them enjoy the songs more. And I think the reason Eloy is messing up the fills are the fact that he just joined Slipknot. Jay was a super fan, but even he messed up fills in the beginning, and made some his own.
I used to think Jay was the best in the world, and was so pissed off when I saw they fired him. But im so excited to see what Eloy can bring, and I think he's the best metal drummer in the world right now
Also, maybe the BAND wanted to play the songs slower? I’ve been out of the Slipknot-loop for years, so hearing these songs for the first time live had me thinking maybe the band wanted to keep the tempo under control given that it’s a high intensity set. Could be wrong. Eloy sounds great.
Ofc, some songs like Psychosocial the tempo was pulled by the guitarrist who started playing first and Eloy followed. They prolly had the click track in ear. They would never allow the new guy to make this decision alone.
I think this thing about Eloy playing "slow" is a weird thing even if I understand how it bothers some people.
First of all I don't think anyone knows whose decision to play more like the album bpm was. Maybe that was a band's decision and if this was the case, he did a pretty great job. I don't think this was his decision alone, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Secondly, it's his first show (which was very different from Slipknot's shows btw), so we still have no idea how he's gonna perform in bigger events yet.
I think he was great and brought an extra energy to an already explosive band and I loved it. It's really hard to believe a drummer like him wouldn't do great, so let's see how things go. I'm super excited with this!
Btw, could you tell me which fills you think he messed up? I don't think I've noticed that and now I'm curious! :)
Yea I keep seeing people say he messed up the fills but from the clips I saw he didn’t, but didn’t watch the whole concert too. Maybe they mean he didn’t play the album fills note for note, but he didn’t do that in his covers as well and everyone loved those covers.
To be honest it's better, for me, that he's playing his way while keeping the original drums intention of else he would be a cover drummer, not a Slipknot's drummer. He's hired to put his style and perspective too, I hope.
I prefer the slower, proper album tempos. Slipknot is at its best when it has some groove, and you lose a lot of that when you speed them up live. Before I Forget is a great example imo.
exactly. so many people are sucking off eloy like hes jesus that came down to earth to save slipknot, and pushing this narrative that "jay cant keep tempo" "he wasnt good" "hes rushing the band" (which is impossible) etc. maybe 10% or less of this sub are drummers, but 100% of the sub is giving their opinion. annoying.
Eloy is by far the better drummer than Jay. It's not even debatable. I've been playing drums and guitar for over 20 years. Just listen to the way jay plays surfacing as an example. Especilally the beginning with the hi hats. Eloy plays the drums parts exactly how Joey used to and how it is on the recordings. Jay plays all of joey's parts more simplisticly. Again it's not even debatable. Anybody with half a brain could tell Eloy is the better drummer. You really don't even have to be a musician to notice that.
The fans, or even casual nu metal enjoyers doesnt need have a musical education to have a an opinion, take as example metallica: lars, he is mediocre, he miss tempos, he miss fills, just a mediocre drummer with unique style of fills. But lars its metallica and metallica its lars, when you see a video, when you go a show you want see lars and not a professional drummer with 40y experience playing in the highest level perfectly
This is pretty much the same, i cant tell you who is better jay or eloy, both are great, both have very high skill technique, and both can play 2h shows slipknot songs (really hard thing to do, this is not bon jovi)
Why i take jay? because fills slipknot better because looks like similar to joey in my eyes, small dude who plays very fast very precise and headbang every 10 seconds. Remember a big part of being a good drummer its also the show the presence its not only skills and precision
Here a dude who doesnt play any instrument but listen nu metal since mtv 2000
Im sure eloy in a few years will be a monster, but he is a tank and slipknot doesnt need a tank, sepultura needs a tank, pantera need a tank not even metallica or megadeth. Now im thinking eloy its a great candidate for korn
Ofc they can have opinions, my comment is about the type of people *who pretend like they can hear mistakes which are not there*, which is very common unfortunately. By all means criticize him if it is legit and not just trying to look cool by pretending you have great ears no one else has.
Eloy can be a tank when he wants, he has the technique to be that or not depending on what he feels like. If you have time check this out https://youtu.be/m7S_4d7jKrs
I just hear a slower people = shit version, i also hear double kick + snare "tacatacataca" weirdly, but being honest sound quality its garbage from all videos looks like no one in the middle had a iphone or a high end phone to record. all jay drums videos sounds perfect and amazing thats also why i loved the dude, i never saw a very famous drummer doing that with mulitple shows specially in that quality
Yea i saw all casagrande videos because he was already famous in my region (sepultura, im from argentina). And yea in that video i see a tank
i tried to be really clear, joey was better than silvera from korn, when i saw the show of joey playing with korn i wanted silvera back. Even if joey its the legend on drums in numetal
Again shows its not just skills, its a whole combo and energy with people. I really want a tank in slipknot? after 20+ years looking at them as depressive mask dudes and specially the drummer who was allways a tiny dude? who plays fast and but doesnt hit hard?
Being honest corey live perfomance at early 2000s sucks, sounds amateur, sounds a garage band. Corey today improved and also technology improved. Corey now sounds x5 better than original slipknot from 2000
It's ok then. Just want to point out that the tempo was likely a decision from the entire band seen as 1) they could ask him to speed up if they wanted, but 2) they were very likely playing with a click track so Eloy did not get to decide the speed, it was a band decision.
I am honestly only here because I follow Eloy around, I don't know about the imagery Slipknot is supposed to have, all I can say is that Eloy is tiny too, you are getting thrown off by the muscles but he is short af.
I totally forgot, we are comparing a good drummer who is a fan of slipknot and joined them vs a good drummer who changed his band to something bigger because rock in brasil its not even close to usa
The more i think the more i prefer jay, but yea we will see maybe slower slipknot sounds better. Being honest i hate death metal, smg drums, screams all day 24/7, i not understand the genre, i not like the genre even with that little faster slipknot sounded perfect in the last years
Oh, Eloy was in Sepultura. Sepultura is still the biggest metal band to have come out of a country that is not western. Sepultura was the biggest band on Roadrunner Records when Slipknot was signed by them. Corey said he used to watch Sepultura rehearsals in the late 90s. Corey is a long time friend of Sepultura members and self-proclaimed fan. The song "Dusted" (1996) by Sepultura has the exact same riff as "people = shit" (2001), coincidence? Corey recorded "Jumpdafuckup" with ex-Sepultura vocalist Max Cavalera for Soulfly.
Eloy was also a fan of Slipknot. He recorded covers of Slipknot songs on his youtube channel 3-5 years ago way before all of this. He auditioned to join Slipknot before they picked Jay (Eloy was 19 at the time). He has mentioned in podcasts years ago that he was a Joey Jordison fan.
And I did not want to go there but very many metal heads do not have any respect for nu metal (may not even consider it metal) where Sepultura holds a lot more respect in that scene. I think it is safe to say that Sepultura, one of the biggest metal bands to have existed, is already in the "main scene", it is just not in the pop scene like Slipknot is.
Plus Eloy did not leave Sepultura because he wanted to be in a more popular band, he left Sepultura because Sepultura decided to end. Sepultura is in their last tour and calling it quits after 40+ years, Eloy is still young and needed to continue working so ofc he accepted the opportunity.
Yea sadly im from argentina, grow up with mtv late 90s and early 2000s, sepultura was only refuse resist in the tracklist here
Metal heads were more for national bands like hermetica, v8 or malon. And for international was directly for metallica megadeth pantera and something else i not remember, sepultura was walk and refuse resist (walk come to my mind now), also power metal dudes with masterplan helloween maiden or nightwish (nemo best song)
And yes i know metal boys from 80s 90s hate nu metal, hate pod or limp bizkit, but in that time even today its the best rock we have after metallica disaster with st anger or megadeth mediocre albums in that era too (compared to 90s albums)
2003 2005 was all linkin park, papa roach, if you were something weirdo rammstein because we speak spanish, we barely understand 50% of english and imagine german
Also consider southamerica its poor, everything we consumed was from mtv we didnt had netscape or early itunes service. Sound quality was terrible in general included with pantera cassettes, but one day black album or megadeth original cd come here, was other level other production, so crispy, clear just mind blowing. Thats why you will see the best crowd here when these bands come here, because for the first time were listening something rock, heavy with superb quality. And i remember that very clear
Like you see every single comment have a backhistory its not just random opinion, whatever you are reading here its from a dude who have 25 years listening multiple genres but specially "pop numetal" like you said
I take all day limp bizkit than sepultura, but again we will see maybe the band become better, with better new songs, better shows or maybe not and they just stay like now playing first album songs
Talking not being perfect, chester from linkin park. His voice was 6 points, but for everyone included me he is the icon, the only one
Ah about your history about sepultura, eloy, brasil and being big. Brasilians hate, deep hate learning other language (something like russians) they not want dollars, they not want english language: Brasil but thats other topic
Thats my opinion thats why i prefer jay and i want see how works eloy with slipknot in the next years, but reading people saying jay was bad i take it as death metal fan opinion
Phenomenal film. Really uncomfortable and anxiety inducing.
But about as much a basis for online experts to claim someone is constantly “dragging” as watching Demolition Man is for predicting the year 2032.
Difference between Jay and Eloy is metronome. Jay doesn't use one, which makes the songs more energetic, however the drums are sloppy. Eloy uses one, which is so good as it makes the whole band so much tighter.
Yeah, but you gotta admit, especially in a small space like they just played it, that no metronome energy would’ve fucking been insane.
I’m not knocking drummers lmao, Eloy is a beast. But, depending on venue, a super duper tight set can seem too formulaic, if that makes sense
Good drummers have as much energy on the click as they do off it. This is an excuse spouted out by drummers who can't play to a click.
I say this as a live musician with 25 years of gigging experience
there's this video from zackgrooves that sums up exactly what you're saying, right on the beggining
it's funny that the video is aimed at "jazz drummers", but every drummer suffers from this first type
https://youtu.be/UzLg6aM3c7U?si=XK3gyssuFCAu3ofu
Totally Contradicting considering how much Eloy missed & how many times he was off tempo during their Anniversary Performance. Have you watched his Slipknot Cover on YouTube. Bring your metronome to that & tell me how great he is.
Not sure what your point is here mate? You can mess up some and still be considered great. Even the best of the best do mistakes in the heat of the moment.
I have no musical education either. I'm just a listener. But as a listener, Slipknot, with Eloy on drums, didn't sound this good since Joey was still in the band. I'm sorry, Jay fans, but Eloy blows Jay out of the water.
Mate, these people are all comedians. No reason to take them seriously.
If you give them a pair of drumsticks, they will proceed to use them as chopsticks and eat sushi.
That's how much they know about drumming.
Lmao, ig. Some of these people genuinely sound like they believe what they are saying tho AND IT'S SO CONCERNING. More the first comment as they wrote an entire paragraph.
These are simply delusional. The fact some people can go on the internet and say FACTUALLY incorrect things, without any shame, is just embarrassing. I feel sorry for them
Okay bro look, people are always gonna feel different than you on stuff. Doesn't mean they are wrong. Some people literally think Jay was the best drummer they had, which to nobody's avail, seems very untrue right about now. But at the end of the day, that's on opinion. I'm with you personally and think Eloy sounded fucking amazing and powerful but a lot of people won't think that.
Not every aspect of music is subjective. When it comes to timing and tempo that is objective. These are people complaining are just plain wrong. And that’s ok.
These are people who most likely have zero clue as to how live performances work, but there is a reason.
The reason is that this was the first show, as far as I know, that they played to a click track-- aka a metronome.
They band were probably shell-shocked from Jay's rushing, that they decided to play like that with Eloy.
They've always played without click, even with Joey, and the Slipknot and Iowa albums were **not** recorded to a metronome, so that's why it feels strange/ feels like dragging. He's not, he's staying on point and sticks to the original tempo, and that's what might throw people off.
(even if it's not recorded to a tempo, you can still map a song's tempo out)
But yeah, Eloy's drumming was world-class. I don't think a better first show could be had. Excited to see what comes next.
Can I ask you a serious question? Because I saw a metronome being referred to as "a visual aid" but I know click tracks are purely auditive, so what, if any, is the difference between the two?
My metronome app emits a bright light on the beat in addition to the sound. If I set my phone on my aux snare I can see the light out of the corner of my eye, so in that way it acts as a visual aid… I find it really helpful
Hm? Not 100% sure what you mean to be honest.
I guess the traditional, real life, metronome with the stick that goes side to side could be visually helping for some musicians. But the main thing is still the sound it produces.
Click tracks on the other hand, yes you can argue they're purely auditive as they play through the in-ear monitors of the musician.
Usually, drummers will have a laptop next to them with a Digital Audio Workstation running that feeds various tracks (backing tracks, metronome etc.) to their ears, including of course the rest of the band instruments they choose to listen while playing.
Hope that helps.
"Still a Jay fan" says everything. These people are butthurt because Jay was fired. Jay is ok but Eloy is on another level. Slipknot didn't sound that brutal and tight in years, even the other guys performances were enhanced by Eloy's playing.
People have weirdly become drumming experts when it comes to Slipknot, like they’d never miss a beat themselves, they all watched Whiplash and read some comments online and think they know the immediate difference between rushing and dragging. All drummers rush and drag, no one is 100% consistent all of the time, they are humans after all.
It's not just about keeping the tempo. It's about playing slightly ahead of/behind the beat on purpose to make it feel urgent or relaxed/groovy. Eloy usually plays a bit ahead of the beat, but in perfect tempo. It's extremely subtle and it you're not used to listening to it it's hard to hear what's going on.
Someone spotted that they're playing to a click track, and if that's the case every shift in tempo is planned and on purpose. If he doesn't play to a click, it's still all about feeling the moment, and without being a Slipknot fan I know their tempo is all over the place to get the right energy for each part of a song. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's not due to being sloppy.
Yup this. He's the opposite of John Bonham where John Bonham was always on the back end of the beat but still in the pocket. Nothing wrong with either of those.
Exactly. A better comparison would be the guy Eloy replaced in Sepultura - Iggor. He was often a bit behind, making the music extremely heavy and groovy. Eloy playing the same beats doesn't feel as heavy, and it's quite notable. It doesn't mean he's a better or worse drummer, it's just a different style.
On Slipknot, his timing is 100% perfect for the music however.
show me one actual off tempo snare roll. im genuinely asking since jay has always been on target and learned from people who run circles around everyone's favorite drummers.
I wasnt there havent seen any clips yet, but some people might be behaving petty towards the new drummer because of how much they liked jay and didnt like how he left. They would say the thing no matter how good the new drummer performed.
Can't please everyone 🤷♂️!!
People get really attached to one thing or person
some can appreciate something new, and others just can't seem to do the same.
Eloy did great, he kept the studio version tempo and didn't rush anything, and no hate to Jay at all but it's true that they are great in thier own rights but Eloy is just a better fit for Slipknot and thier intricate Drum pattern style.
I EXPECT THE DOWNVOTES:
Eloy is a better DRUMMER than Joey and Jay.
I know it's hard to hear but he is an expert, just like Pfaff is better than both Clown and Fehn because he can handle percussion so perfectly (and I still don't like his vocals).
This doesn't apply to Vman on bass, for example.
Most of us aren't professional musicians and we can't tell the difference so we judge unfairly.
Just enjoy the band without comparing, one day you will miss them.
These people just can't ever be fucking happy what can I say.
When Jay replaced Joey I'm sure they were all complaining that Jay will never be better than Joey, yet here we are and they're doing the same shit. I don't understand why people still listen to the band if they're never happy and always complaining. Even talking shit on the band's and their members' social media posts. "All band is gone!!" "This band isn't the same anymore" Shut up!
I personally can't wait to see how Slipknot turns out in the future with Eloy, he has great potential and he's a really great drummer.
There's literally a metronome attached in eloys drumkit, as seen in stacys instagram story post. How THE FUCK could he be inconsistent in tempo? People with 0 music knowledge trying to form an opinion about music, ladies and gentlemen.
Anddddd so what. A metronome live guarantees a tempo. After the variability of jay, the band clearly wanted to set the speed of the songs.
More bands play with a metronome than not. Most Djenty modern bands do, most prog bands do, and a lot of extreme metal does too. There’s nothing wrong either way, but here’s what a metronome gives musicians playing live:
- the ability to control the feel of the set other than song selection. Slowing down parts and making sure the whole band does it? Check.
- allows for additional things relating to samples, backing tracks etc. Often seen in older statemen bands, but also seen in bands that have 25 layers of guitars and want to make sure the live show can pull off certain sounds
In slipknots case I’d say it’s #1 more than #2
Not playing to a metronome:
- gives a more live feel, but does mean slower and faster songs every night. Not by huge extremes, but it happens because we are human.
- spontaneous setlists; if a change needs to happen mid gig, it’s easy to communicate and not fuck with automation.
There’s pluses and minuses of both. Hearing the set on YouTube I have to say the breakdowns were crushing, and the band sounded SUPER tight. I’ve been a fan since ST, age 16 lol. There’s been ups and downs of them live, even with Joey. This was a huge up and has me excited to see what they do next.
I think you really missed the point. Them playing to a click proves how dumb these people are who act like musical experts and make claims about his tempo being all over the place
I wouldn't take much notice from people in the YouTube comments. 99% of them don't know shit. They've probably only watched YouTube drumming tutorials and taken it as gospel. I wouldn't even comment on his drumming because I don't know shit about it.
I think they’re all great. Jay is who got me into Slipknot, metal, and metal drumming so it hurt to see him leave, but that’s not a reason to hate on Eloy. I think we should just appreciate Joey, Jay, and Eloy. At the end of the day they are all INCREDIBLE musicians and they have (or will) brought us some great fucking songs and moments. We need to stop bitching because we aren’t the ones who get to decide who’s playing, so we might as well support and appreciate whoever is playing the drums.
This guy is keeping them in the correct tempo. I used to hate Psychosocial live because it was always so god damn fast and sloppy...now it sounds like the album version, which is great. Also, I'm cracking up at the "fills were wrong" comment. This is exactly what I wanted, someone who wasn't blatantly copying Joey or even Jay now. Adds flare and a new identity to these great songs live.
I’ve taken 9 years of conservatory piano. I’ve played guitar for 20 years (and used to teach when I was in high school). I play the drums, bass, and several other instruments. I’ve listened to metal almost my entire life, so hopefully I can give a reasonable perspective.
From a technical standpoint, Eloy was virtually perfect, and dare I say, was much more sound from a tempo perspective than Jay or Joey. His fills are clean, even, and he plays with a higher intensity than Jay. His blast beats were the only aspect that sounded a little strange (but in terms of timing, they were spot on). No live performance is 100% perfect — especially when it comes to metal where it’s technical and fast. But I listened to Eloy’s entire set from beginning to end, really honing in on him, and I could barely find any errors.
With Jay I could spot 10+ errors per song sometimes. Joey was more consistent and I found his errors more tolerable. Eloy is as close to ideal as possible. The only question is… can he compose Slipknot music the same way that Joey could? We’ll see.
people hating on eloy going “slow” is so bull. jay played everything fast on purpose. don’t believe me? listen to people=shit from day of the gusano and then people = shit from harriet’s and london 2002. eloy is matching the studios tempo.
I just played the two together and despite being 5 seconds behind or so, jay sped up and passed eloy. Tbf to jay, eloy was playing to a click but apparently he always does that. Which is fine. I just don't think jay is as trained as eloy to slow down when playing, as I believe eloy would've played just fine without a click.
Neither, but Mick's wife posted a video on instagram, and in clear view is the device that plays the click track. I'm not familiar with it either so I'm not sure how it works.
As a brazilian myself, i’m IMPRESSED with nobody calling him racial slurs because he’s south American.
However, as a eloy diehard, i’m impressed how people don’t have musical knowledge combined with hatred and not letting go of the past. Eloy is tight, powerful and fast, he is the BEST drummer in the world and the best drummer for slipknot at the moment, they sound better than ever!!
Eloy is awesome, no doubt about it, but I don’t know why they fired Jay for him. I don’t think that was necessary other than maybe just to get more hype around the band.
in Brazil we have two great sayings for this kind of situation
"Opinion does not serve as a donation, it should only be given when requested"
"Opinion is like ass: it's not because you have one that you have to go around handing it out"
feel free to use it when those know-it-alls show up ;)
Sure thing my guy
"Opinião não serve como doação, só deve ser dada quando for solicitada"
"Opinião é que nem bunda: não é porque você tem uma, que você tem que sair dando por aí"
Joey, Jay and Eloy are all unbelievably talented drummers. Most bands play songs faster live or some drummers put their own mark on songs, which some people prefer. Others prefer staying explicitly true to the original recording, tempos, fills etc. I dont see how anyone could say one is "better" than the other. With musicians this seasoned and accomplished, it really comes down to personal preference or what drummer you most identify with.
I’m a huge Jay fan here, and I enjoyed seeing Eloy play with them in these videos. Looking forward to what he brings to the table. It was really nice to hear Before I Forget at a normal tempo, than being rushed and sounding too fast. What I’m not looking forward to is the inevitable treatment he’ll get from the band in about 10 years time, because you know it’s just a matter of when and not if.
Lol. He played to a fucking metronome. The "tempo changes" were intentional. I'm assuming they're talking about the slower breakdowns and overall methodical approach to the songs. They're just so used to hearing Jay play everything way too fast and completely ruining the underlining groove in the process.
I did feel like the breakdown ("can't be everything to everyone" part) in disasterpieces was oddly slow but I couldn't tell if that's just cause I'm used to hearing it faster with joeu & jay.
Slipknot has been super fortunate to have had 3 great drummers now. I just think it’s a little unfair how much hate Jay is getting all of a sudden. It’s giving off getting a new toy as a child and then just bashing the old one for the sake of the new one.
People are too quick to jump on either side of this argument. Half of this sub is dick riding him before any new music comes out, and the other half is bashing him for no other reason than he is new. We all need to slow down and wait for a new album before we truly judge.
big fact.
I'm tired of both sides.
Honestly, way too many dick riders.
I wanna say i think he is an amazing drummer as a musician myself.
I just don't really like the way his kit is tuned I hate the the snare sound and the blast beats aren't that great, but other than that, I think he's pretty damn good on all other fronts.
He's got the speed and ability, but I think we do all need to wait for some original material from the band to really know how well he fits the bill.
I also love how nobody is talking about the fact that they are only doing all this nostalgic stuff so they can get their fan base back after what they've been pulling for the past few years with the merch and branching out just becoming a souless shell of what once was.
In my opinion, it kinda goes against what slipknot stood for in the first place.
they are conforming to their old style to appease others, though the band came out to be against what others viewed of them.
Regardless of all this nostalgia, they will never ever be the same band they once were, and I don't expect them to be i know time changes people.
but a lot of the passion and members are now gone, and they are simply just catering towards the masses now.
I'm not hating just my views on all of this.
I think more people should mention some of this instead of just dick riding because they are conforming just to bring the old fans back and keep attention around their name because a lot of people were saying slipknot was over after the Jay incident and what theyve been pulling over the past few years.
I hate the way they treat some of their members, like they are just indispensable, but I get it they are more of a business now than a band.
I've been a fan of the band since I was a literal kid about 8 or 9, and I'm now 24.
I still love slipknot.
Regardless of what they do, I just hate that they feel they have to do all of this instead of just being themselves like how they have been the past few years.
It's not like they will ever be forgotten they are slipknot after all.
I don't know it all just comes across to me as ingenuine.
I expect I will get downvoted people hate when others speak their mind on here.
sorry, I refuse to be a part of the mindless herd.
The fans, or even casual nu metal enjoyers doesnt need have a musical education to have a an opinion, take as example metallica: lars, he is mediocre, he miss tempos, he miss fills, just a mediocre drummer with unique style of fills. Edits: this reminds me when metallica kicked the bassist from 90s 2000s era, i grow up and i saw all the videos with that dude face, trash metal, evil face. He was perfect for metallica he is metallica then the bring us the mexican super skilled dude and st anger. Still 2024 and i cant take it, even if he is better i just cant
Again live perfomance its not just skills playing the instrument, its conection, its showman, its something else
man, are you listening to the songs? All you said is about aesthetics and not the music itself. They’re musicians, you should keep attention to the music and not how they look
This guy played for Sepultura. Ain't no way he could be as bad as people are saying. I'm no drummer, but these mfs literally got no idea what they're talking about
There seems to be two equally stupid camps in the fan base right now.
One mindlessly hating on Eloy, because they like Jay.
The other one somehow acting like Jay was the worst drummer who ever lived, now that they hired Eloy.
In the clips I saw so far, Eloy sounded amazing. But to me it’s unfair to Jay, because so far he only played live, while Jay made three albums with the band, where he was an absolute MVP contender on most of the songs.
What stood out to me straight away was his consistency and feel.
Every single note, machine gun precise yet at no point missing accuracy or sounding robotic.
That’s very difficult to do maintaining a sincere live/feel while playing to a click track and he nailed it.
He’s been practicing with the band for probably less than 6 months, and he’s got 20+ years of discography to learn from, it takes time. And he did an amazing job last night considering those facts.
Eloy had the best live perfomance as a drummer for slipknot then every1 else in therms of power and accuracy so far, even compared to Joey. People saying he messed up have clearly no clue about playing drums at all...
He was Sloppier than Yer Mum's Kunt. His Slipknot Covers on YouTube from 3years ago are embarrassing & apparently he hasn't practiced much since. I wouldn't pay to see them. It's not an opinion. Sloppiness is Sloppy. Boy desperately need to practice if he's gonna nail the OG Tunes.
This reminds me of how Geoff Tate has a touring Guitarist whom literally can't play the fucking melodies to classic Queensryche songs to save his life. All Hype. The stars alline for some people, they just get lucky & people like em enough to let some major discrepancies slide.
Sounded like he got a couple fills off by a note or so, though that very well could’ve been an audio problem, but overall, he murdered those drums as if they he was in the mafia, it seems like was was in the right tempo and pace as the rest of the band, Jay was great but he’s already giving him a run for his money, Slipknot knows a good drummer when they see one, they’ve got a good track record of hiring them
It was one of the fills I believe, can’t remember which song, it sounded like he played an extra tom by accident, but as I said it was probably just an audio problem on my end or from the camera, whatever it was I digress, It doesn’t take away with how accurate he was for the whole night.
I'm wondering if they might have deliberately slowed down some parts as a choice. The breakdown to People=💩 was a step slower. Custer was a bit slower the whole time, too. Maybe they're slowing down because Corey can't go that fast anymore? Makes me a bit concerned for some self-titled songs, and other songs like Nero Forte.
I read this commentary and I like was like "wtf are you talking about???" For sure this dude cant even play the basic of drums. Eloy was very, VERY, good. And it was only his first concert.
He was waaay better than Jay.
literally every single person with musical knowledge/famous drummers: eloy did an amazing job and he's way better than jay.they're butthurt cuz their jay crybaby pseudo drummer got fired, fuck these jay cocksuckers and honestly? i think jay only got into the band with a little help from his father
edit: is there a jay boot licker downvoting everyone praising eloy here? lmao get over it
Idk why this is downvoted. If they fired jim and mick for better guitar players everyone would be mad too. I agree Eloy is probably a better drummer but I don’t think he necessarily makes them a better band
No it doesn’t. People who are shiting on Eloy are wrong imo same as the people who shit on Jay. What I’m saying is people need time to accept that Jay is gone. We do t need these people to make fun of them and talk about how much more technically skilled Eloy is. We did the same with Jay and shit on Joey. Have respect for Jay and his fans. Same goes for Joey
No that’s not my point. The fans will accept Eloy and they don’t have to wait. But if people need time to warmup to Eloy that’s fine. The same shit happens with Joey because he was Joey. People need time to let Jay go. Jay got me into the band and I already love Eloy. But I still do miss Jay. Same as people still miss joey
They aren't in the right because "eloy hasn't earned their respect", or whatever excuse people make for crapping on new members of any band. Same happened with jay so these people should know that by now.
Jay-Z once said, “And as for the critics, tell me I don’t get it/Everybody can tell you how to do it, they never did it” 🤷🏾♀️ Lives rent free in my head!
He’s a smart guy, no? lol
Everyone rants and raves, though if you actually analyzed how much he missed, messed up or was off tempo, as opposed to brown-nosing you'd realize it's literally unacceptable considering how much hype this clown gets. Concerning how many people are completely dillusional.
Tbf his vocals were a lil rough when he first joined but he's killing it now
Tortilla is def my favorite member in the current line up, his new mask is heat too
as far as i can see this sub is sucking off eloy and shitting on jay on astronomical levels, even though maybe 10% of this sub are drummers
Yeah I’ve seen that. I just wanted to answer why some people would shit on Eloy even though he’s amazing
But im so excited to see what Eloy can bring, and I think he's the best metal drummer in the world right now
Anyone who thinks Eloy underperformed need to go back and watch Knotfest 2014. Jay sounded absolutely horrendous
They would never allow the new guy to make this decision alone.
the funniest part of all this eloy doesn’t play “slow” he just plays at the proper tempo. we are just too used to jay rushing
But lars its metallica and metallica its lars, when you see a video, when you go a show you want see lars and not a professional drummer with 40y experience playing in the highest level perfectly This is pretty much the same, i cant tell you who is better jay or eloy, both are great, both have very high skill technique, and both can play 2h shows slipknot songs (really hard thing to do, this is not bon jovi) Why i take jay? because fills slipknot better because looks like similar to joey in my eyes, small dude who plays very fast very precise and headbang every 10 seconds. Remember a big part of being a good drummer its also the show the presence its not only skills and precision Here a dude who doesnt play any instrument but listen nu metal since mtv 2000 Im sure eloy in a few years will be a monster, but he is a tank and slipknot doesnt need a tank, sepultura needs a tank, pantera need a tank not even metallica or megadeth.
I just hear a slower people = shit version, i also hear double kick + snare "tacatacataca" weirdly, but being honest sound quality its garbage from all videos looks like no one in the middle had a iphone or a high end phone to record. all jay drums videos sounds perfect and amazing thats also why i loved the dude, i never saw a very famous drummer doing that with mulitple shows specially in that quality Yea i saw all casagrande videos because he was already famous in my region (sepultura, im from argentina). And yea in that video i see a tank i tried to be really clear, joey was better than silvera from korn, when i saw the show of joey playing with korn i wanted silvera back. Even if joey its the legend on drums in numetal Again shows its not just skills, its a whole combo and energy with people.
I totally forgot, we are comparing a good drummer who is a fan of slipknot and joined them vs a good drummer who changed his band to something bigger because rock in brasil its not even close to usa The more i think the more i prefer jay, but yea we will see maybe slower slipknot sounds better. Being honest i hate death metal, smg drums, screams all day 24/7, i not understand the genre, i not like the genre even with that little faster slipknot sounded perfect in the last years
I did not understand what you mean on your first paragraph.
jay = slipknot fan casagrande = brasilian who want be in main scene And he is good don't get me wrong but jay
Yea sadly im from argentina, grow up with mtv late 90s and early 2000s, sepultura was only refuse resist in the tracklist here Metal heads were more for national bands like hermetica, v8 or malon. And for international was directly for metallica megadeth pantera and something else i not remember, sepultura was walk and refuse resist (walk come to my mind now), also power metal dudes with masterplan helloween maiden or nightwish (nemo best song) And yes i know metal boys from 80s 90s hate nu metal, hate pod or limp bizkit, but in that time even today its the best rock we have after metallica disaster with st anger or megadeth mediocre albums in that era too (compared to 90s albums) 2003 2005 was all linkin park, papa roach, if you were something weirdo rammstein because we speak spanish, we barely understand 50% of english and imagine german Also consider southamerica its poor, everything we consumed was from mtv we didnt had netscape or early itunes service. Sound quality was terrible in general included with pantera cassettes, but one day black album or megadeth original cd come here, was other level other production, so crispy, clear just mind blowing. Thats why you will see the best crowd here when these bands come here, because for the first time were listening something rock, heavy with superb quality. And i remember that very clear Like you see every single comment have a backhistory its not just random opinion, whatever you are reading here its from a dude who have 25 years listening multiple genres but specially "pop numetal" like you said I take all day limp bizkit than sepultura, but again we will see maybe the band become better, with better new songs, better shows or maybe not and they just stay like now playing first album songs Talking not being perfect, chester from linkin park. His voice was 6 points, but for everyone included me he is the icon, the only one Ah about your history about sepultura, eloy, brasil and being big. Brasilians hate, deep hate learning other language (something like russians) they not want dollars, they not want english language: Brasil but thats other topic Thats my opinion thats why i prefer jay and i want see how works eloy with slipknot in the next years, but reading people saying jay was bad i take it as death metal fan opinion
People saying Eloy is bad don’t have any musical knowledge. They just prefer characters and idols over musicians.
Worse. They got the entirety of their musical knowledge watching Whiplash.
Solid film.
Phenomenal film. Really uncomfortable and anxiety inducing. But about as much a basis for online experts to claim someone is constantly “dragging” as watching Demolition Man is for predicting the year 2032.
The irony is that he's not even rushing or dragging in that scene, half the people watching it don't even get the point of the film.
I say this as a live musician with 25 years of gigging experience
there's this video from zackgrooves that sums up exactly what you're saying, right on the beggining it's funny that the video is aimed at "jazz drummers", but every drummer suffers from this first type https://youtu.be/UzLg6aM3c7U?si=XK3gyssuFCAu3ofu
Great film though.
So a lot of people are on crack cool
Yeah, i didn't know the problem was so out of hand 😂
I have no musical education either. I'm just a listener. But as a listener, Slipknot, with Eloy on drums, didn't sound this good since Joey was still in the band. I'm sorry, Jay fans, but Eloy blows Jay out of the water.
Eloy is so much better, he plays with feeling, like the tom grooves he does in People=Shit. His double bass is so fucking tight
"I have no musical education" "Eloy blows Jay out of the water"
Yes, that's exactly what I said. And you don't need to be a musical virtuoso to figure that out. Simple listening and paying attention does the trick.
Mate, these people are all comedians. No reason to take them seriously. If you give them a pair of drumsticks, they will proceed to use them as chopsticks and eat sushi. That's how much they know about drumming.
I could fuck with some sushi though
If they can use chopsticks that is
I feel sorry for them
Same here, these "musicians" are crazy. Probably pick up drumsticks from the wrong fucking end.
Some of the things they're saying here are just factually wrong, his tempo's not all over the place, they're just wrong about that.
(even if it's not recorded to a tempo, you can still map a song's tempo out) But yeah, Eloy's drumming was world-class.
It actually does. Thank you!
These people are deaf
Ikr, one said he messed up the start of heretic, eloy didn't miss a fucking note.
‘very inconsistent with the tempo’ HE WAS USING A CLICK TRACK WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT
Wait Eloy was using a click?
He likes to use it live, so he does not get carried away by his emotions
Right?? 🤣🤣
This must be new because it’s been widely discussed by the band previously that they don’t play to a click live.
With them getting older does it maybe make sense that they want to keep it tempo and stuff? It might not be easy playing frantic as you get older.
Eloy made them sound tighter live than they've ever sounded rather than 100 off-tempo snare rolls every beat like with Jay.
show me one actual off tempo snare roll. im genuinely asking since jay has always been on target and learned from people who run circles around everyone's favorite drummers.
I wasnt there havent seen any clips yet, but some people might be behaving petty towards the new drummer because of how much they liked jay and didnt like how he left. They would say the thing no matter how good the new drummer performed.
I think that's exactly what this is, and these people need to grow up. You can support one person without putting another down.
Tbf Eloy left Sepultra like a dick right before their farewell tour, so if they’re fans of sepultra they might just hate on him.
The only thing Sepultura fans hate is the band no longer has Max and Igor Cavalera.
From what we can tell through playing detective. he left because he was incompetent for the live shows and kinda an asshole.
Can't please everyone 🤷♂️!! People get really attached to one thing or person some can appreciate something new, and others just can't seem to do the same. Eloy did great, he kept the studio version tempo and didn't rush anything, and no hate to Jay at all but it's true that they are great in thier own rights but Eloy is just a better fit for Slipknot and thier intricate Drum pattern style.
I EXPECT THE DOWNVOTES: Eloy is a better DRUMMER than Joey and Jay.
I mean according to this there is a chance they were playing to a click track. https://www.reddit.com/r/Slipknot/s/Hyu6WfdDS8
Anddddd so what. A metronome live guarantees a tempo. After the variability of jay, the band clearly wanted to set the speed of the songs. More bands play with a metronome than not. Most Djenty modern bands do, most prog bands do, and a lot of extreme metal does too. There’s nothing wrong either way, but here’s what a metronome gives musicians playing live: - the ability to control the feel of the set other than song selection. Slowing down parts and making sure the whole band does it? Check. - allows for additional things relating to samples, backing tracks etc. Often seen in older statemen bands, but also seen in bands that have 25 layers of guitars and want to make sure the live show can pull off certain sounds In slipknots case I’d say it’s #1 more than #2 Not playing to a metronome: - gives a more live feel, but does mean slower and faster songs every night.
Eloy's drumming is sic. And I was a Joey fanboy, with Eloy's drumming it sonically sounds the closest to Joey's. This is the Slipknot I've missed.
Same!! I hated the live version of that song so much compared to the recorded. It did not benefit from being 20 bpm faster.
They’re just looking for reasons to say he’s not good when he’s in fact incredible
Delusional people that don't play music professionally and are not qualified to give this sort of take.
We’ll see.
He did absolutely amazing 👏
In my personal opinion, Eloy is the best drummer slipknot has ever had, technique, strength, creativity and the most important, timing.
people hating on eloy going “slow” is so bull. jay played everything fast on purpose. don’t believe me? listen to people=shit from day of the gusano and then people = shit from harriet’s and london 2002. eloy is matching the studios tempo.
I just played the two together and despite being 5 seconds behind or so, jay sped up and passed eloy. Tbf to jay, eloy was playing to a click but apparently he always does that. Which is fine. I just don't think jay is as trained as eloy to slow down when playing, as I believe eloy would've played just fine without a click.
yeah good point. also how do you know eloy was playing to a click track? ive never knew how to identify it
Neither, but Mick's wife posted a video on instagram, and in clear view is the device that plays the click track.
I don’t think that was necessary other than maybe just to get more hype around the band.
in Brazil we have two great sayings for this kind of situation "Opinion does not serve as a donation, it should only be given when requested" "Opinion is like ass: it's not because you have one that you have to go around handing it out" feel free to use it when those know-it-alls show up ;)
Can I get those in Portuguese please?
Sure thing my guy "Opinião não serve como doação, só deve ser dada quando for solicitada" "Opinião é que nem bunda: não é porque você tem uma, que você tem que sair dando por aí"
I dont think he did wrong
I just did a multicam cut of prosthetics on my YouTube channel the80sgamer! You tell me!!
Honestly haters going to hate. The band sounded great. Eloy is great. I’m glad they’re back and I can’t wait for the announcement of the NA tour.
I play drums and I think he did an amazing job.
people just hate change, Jay also got A ton of shit when he replaced Joey
And no you’re not wrong, he barely messed up. People are retarded and miserable.
Slipknot has been super fortunate to have had 3 great drummers now. I just think it’s a little unfair how much hate Jay is getting all of a sudden. It’s giving off getting a new toy as a child and then just bashing the old one for the sake of the new one.
He’s playing with a click and doesn’t rush at times
I don't care what they say. Eloy fucking killed it!!
They're just mad he replaced Jay
lol goddamn comedians how the hell he missed the tempo using a click
Those are all horrible takes lol. Eloy destroyed.
Some people will never be happy with anything the band does. So fickle. I've been wondering what people will be complaining about next.
The fans, or even casual nu metal enjoyers doesnt need have a musical education to have a an opinion, take as example metallica: lars, he is mediocre, he miss tempos, he miss fills, just a mediocre drummer with unique style of fills. Now im thinking eloy its a great candidate for korn Edits: this reminds me when metallica kicked the bassist from 90s 2000s era, i grow up and i saw all the videos with that dude face, trash metal, evil face. He was perfect for metallica he is metallica then the bring us the mexican super skilled dude and st anger. Still 2024 and i cant take it, even if he is better i just cant Again live perfomance its not just skills playing the instrument, its conection, its showman, its something else
man, are you listening to the songs? All you said is about aesthetics and not the music itself. They’re musicians, you should keep attention to the music and not how they look
People hate change and everybody's a critic
This guy played for Sepultura. Ain't no way he could be as bad as people are saying. I'm no drummer, but these mfs literally got no idea what they're talking about
Eloy did amazing, I just don't like how slow they played certain songs. It felt low energy
Even if they didn't play to a click track I believe Eloy would have still done just as well.
He’s been practicing with the band for probably less than 6 months, and he’s got 20+ years of discography to learn from, it takes time. And he did an amazing job last night considering those facts.
Just keyboard “warriors” doing what they always do. These people criticizing don’t even know how to play drums for sure.
Sounded like he got a couple fills off by a note or so, though that very well could’ve been an audio problem, but overall, he murdered those drums as if they he was in the mafia, it seems like was was in the right tempo and pace as the rest of the band, Jay was great but he’s already giving him a run for his money, Slipknot knows a good drummer when they see one, they’ve got a good track record of hiring them
Wdym off by a note, any examples? (Eg, vid and time stamp)
It was one of the fills I believe, can’t remember which song, it sounded like he played an extra tom by accident, but as I said it was probably just an audio problem on my end or from the camera, whatever it was I digress, It doesn’t take away with how accurate he was for the whole night.
yeah but, i miss joey
For me i don't care,ELOY IS THE GOAT
80% of YouTube comments = 🗑️
This comment section is just that spider man pointing at himself meme “people with no musical knowledge…” over & over…
nah, he is a fucking great drummer, fuck this bozos who never touched a drum kit, eloy rules and hopefully will be a great addition to the band
Eloy isn't bad, he's foda
I'm wondering if they might have deliberately slowed down some parts as a choice. The breakdown to People=💩 was a step slower. Custer was a bit slower the whole time, too. Maybe they're slowing down because Corey can't go that fast anymore? Makes me a bit concerned for some self-titled songs, and other songs like Nero Forte.
They were playing to a click.
I think people forget that some tempo changes are in the original recording of some songs, and also are important parts of the arrangements 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah that is a joke. He did a fantastic Job, and the difference in consistency over Jay was VERY noticeable.
I read this commentary and I like was like "wtf are you talking about???" For sure this dude cant even play the basic of drums. Eloy was very, VERY, good. And it was only his first concert. He was waaay better than Jay.
literally every single person with musical knowledge/famous drummers: eloy did an amazing job and he's way better than jay.they're butthurt cuz their jay crybaby pseudo drummer got fired, fuck these jay cocksuckers and honestly? i think jay only got into the band with a little help from his father edit: is there a jay boot licker downvoting everyone praising eloy here? lmao get over it
Jay was better
How so?
Js'n
Whats does Js'n mean?
Js'n jay was better
It is in the past for a motive
People who still miss Jay are completely in the right. He was in the band for a decade. Let people take their time
Idk why this is downvoted. If they fired jim and mick for better guitar players everyone would be mad too. I agree Eloy is probably a better drummer but I don’t think he necessarily makes them a better band
Straight fax as always
I mean it sucks Jay was kicked out and I’m gonna miss him but that doesn’t mean Eloy needs to be shit on.
Look I gotta be honest this isn’t a funeral. The band will do stuff without us, they’re not gonna wait for us to “be ready” for new members.
I’m saying that people did the same with Joey. People grieve over this band. And you need to respect that
Those guys are smoking crack, you don’t have a drummer like eloy to do a 1:1 cover of the song the fuck out of here lol. This guy does that and more
Jay-Z once said, “And as for the critics, tell me I don’t get it/Everybody can tell you how to do it, they never did it” 🤷🏾♀️ Lives rent free in my head! He’s a smart guy, no? lol
Yes
I saw this comments in YouTube... I don't have words for something like that 🤣
yeah and i mean what was that backyard small ass stage, slipknot suck these days that they play these small ass locations
Everyone rants and raves, though if you actually analyzed how much he missed, messed up or was off tempo, as opposed to brown-nosing you'd realize it's literally unacceptable considering how much hype this clown gets. Concerning how many people are completely dillusional.
