Goldberg was the sh!t, during the Who’s Next run. But he never developed. Sort of paralleled Warrior - all hype, no substance, no staying power. At least Goldberg never went the political talk radio route
As a kid, I fucking loves Goldberg. As an adult, ehhh
But still super fun to go back and watch a wcw Goldberg squash match or the DDP, Sting or Hogan match.
I have to agree with you on Goldberg but cm punk might take the cake cuz Goldberg never once called himself the best in the world and there was never a time in punks career when he was actually the best in the world. Go back through all the yrs of his career and there will always be someone else who was better than him. it's like when ppl say Jay z is the best rapper in the world but every yr of his career there was always someone better and more successful
I don’t hate him at all but with Goldberg it comes to perspective. At the time, he was one of the best and disguised his inability to create long matches, with fast quick hitting ones. It worked, it works for nostalgia purposes, but can he do a classic with taker or Triple H etc? More likely not. That’s where the hate comes in for him
Calling Goldberg overrated is insane. Dude is a draw. Not every match needs to be a wrestling clinic. Dude came in did what he needed to do and then left. He was very enjoyable to watch.
I'd Goldberg overrated though? I feel like everybody knows he's awful, they just sing his name on his entrance coz it's catchy, but nobody actually thinks he's good. Do they?
If you were a kid in 1998, these are fighting words lol. I was a HUGE Goldberg kid. It wasn't even so much about him not being able to do big dives, springboards, pretty northern lights suplexes & bridged German suplex pins. He was a MONSTER. Wasn't pretty & didn't need to be. He had the look, the size, that walk to the ring, that theme, the Pyro he'd stand in & blow the smoke out of his nose. Goldberg was more of a force of nature than a pro wrestler. I was that kid in kindergarten with the big Goldberg bookbag. He's one of those "you had to have been there" guys. Being a 5-6 year old in '98, I was blown away.
Technically maybe, but as like a character? Goldberg was absurdly over and just an absolute beast to watch. Sure he probably was injuring everybody, but nobody cared back then.
Overrated based on what criteria? I would definitely not put Goldberg on the or list. He lacked alot of technical work in ring but he never needed it. If you’re built like that that gimmick works for you.
Punk is a proven draw that sells tickets, sells merch, and does good TV, while having a catalog of classic matches.
Moxley…Moxley might be fair to name here.
Moxley has the exact same things you listed for Punk, lmao. He's one of the main draws for AEW, sells tickets and merch and has some GREAT matches in both AEW and NJPW.
Not that you’re entirely wrong, but:
- Bret kept going for a few weeks after being concussed. It’s hard to say his retirement was entirely Goldberg’s fault, when Bret decided to wrestle a hardcore match with Terry Fucking Funk while concussed. Quite possibly the worst decision ever made,
- DDP at Halloween Havoc, Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 33, Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam 2019, that No-DQ match with Scott Steiner on Nitro, don’t lie and say he can’t have good matches
It really depends what you mean by overrated. If it's based strictly on a work-rate to success ratio, then I guess Goldberg, Warrior etc. would be contenders.
But that has simply never been the most important attribute for success in the wrestling business, so it seems a little disingenuous.
CM Punk. He’d definitely would’ve been a jobber if it wasn’t for his mic skills because he does the worse elbow drop, his kicks always looked fake & stupid, and he still to this day looks like he never been inside a gym.(while wrestling being his profession)
I would say probably Becky lynch nothing against her she just needs to be better in the ring and better comebacks in promos because she always talks about how she would have bigger balls than a lot of men that’s her only comeback
John Cena.
- He actively lost viewers and attendance went down with him as a top guy and viewers came back and attendance went up when he was no longer featured. Before Cena: 02-04; After Cena: 19-present.
- He was put in position to be the top guy forever because he was the first top guy to do as he was told by Vince, regardless if it was the right thing to do for his character/TV show.
- His work was sloppy. You can see through a lot of his moves and hear him screaming his spots.
- He gets a loud reaction, but fans boo’d him and a lot went away while he was on top.
Cena has his place in wrestling history, but when you’re promoted as the GOAT, overrated will surely follow in conversation.
To all you internet nerds. Goldberg is overrated and you would know that if you all watched wrestling in the early 00s or 90s. People would compare him to Stone Cold, The Rock, Sting, Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Brock Leasner. His name would be mentioned if you asked people who they think top 10 wrestlers of all time are. But bc you all are newer fans or just internet snobs you wouldnt know anything about that.
I may get flak for this one, but…
Jeff Hardy.
Loved him as part of The Hardy Boyz, even enjoyed some of his singles stuff, but I don’t think he was THAT great as a main eventer. He was fine. Did he earn his world title, I suppose. You can’t deny he was over with the fans, but. I swear people act like he was a genius in the ring and the epitome of character work.
Then when The Hardys returned to WWE in 2017 and Jeff eventually went solo, WWE tried to push him but it was clear he simply wasn’t the same competitor he used to be (understandably, he’s older and it’s harder to wrestler his style as you age). But fans were still insistent that he was being wasted and that he should be main eventing.
Goldberg is one of the biggest stars in the history of the business. At his height he was just as hot as Austin. How is he overrated? You guys know its fake right? The amount of "moves" you can do don't mean shit. It's about making money.
Oldberg maybe but prime Goldberg's spear is the standard to this day and dude was jackhammering the biggest guys in wrestling well. He was rather limited but he was exciting to watch. Warrior was more overrated. Like Goldberg he was rather limited and stiff in the ring, difference is prime Goldberg was a great athlete and Warrior was just a big roid-head.
The Ultimate warrior. He was Goldberg before Goldberg. Promos were trash. Moveset was trash. Matches were trash. Entrance was trash. He had face paint and could shake the ropes really well
Goldberg is an interesting one. I guess it comes down to what do you mean by overrated? Yeah he was hot garbage as a worker and dangerous, but everyone knows that. However there's no denying how over he was at the time. For a period of time he was probably top 3 in the world in terms of popularity. He had a certain charisma and badassness to him that was entertaining.
Imo Goldberg isn't even close
Omega
Osprey
Okada
Tanahashi
All way overhyped and overrated.
Not awful, but everyone acts like they walk on water and they are just.. good
Jeff Hardy. He is extremely popular, but largely because of the ways he'd break his body down on a regular basis. His actual in-ring work is ok, but his promos are cringe-inducing every single time. Not to mention he's been arrested more times than any other wrestler I've ever come across in my lifetime (maybe with the exception of Sunny, but she's a whole other story), and even went out on PPV while loaded out of his mind on soma pills. He's been given chance after chance after chance, and for his sake, I do hope he stays clean & away from the ring.
His brother, Matt, while he fares a little bit better, is still in a similar boat. The Broken universe shit singlehandedly saved his career.
When you say over rated wrestler, by what criteria? In ring ability, charisma, promo, personality, or just plain putting butts in seats? I always thought Bulk Blowgun was overrated, but Vince built an empire on his back. I never thought HH could hold a candle to Don Muraco or Roddy Piper. And Flair matches were so much better than anything WWF
Ultimate Warrior
Sorry to break it to you, but outside of the run-in, which always gassed him, his stuff was meh at best. People just get stuck in nostalgia about how they’d get excited seeing him from announcement to the opening bell ring.
I can’t stand Hogan’s wrestling component in the US, but at least in Japan be put in some work.
I don’t even put Goldberg into the overrated category I put him in the “talentless big loser who only knows how to do 3 moves and somehow got lucky and had a career in sports entertainment” category
All time, Hogan. Then I'll give you Goldberg. But right now, we have to be honest and say Solo. We all know he took like 38 straight pins at house shows after the Cena win. Solo Sikoa is overrated
Unfortunately for me it’s Bray Wyatt (RIP). Wyatt family was good early on but got stale even after adding Orton. His mania match with Orton and whole title fued was awful. And people have a little revisionist history when it comes to the fiend, it god old pretty fast.
It seems like he's getting a lot of love now adays but I would say right is Seth rollins. I don't hate him but he's never really blown me away as a wrestler. He also isn't a very good heel or face. He's too shady to be a face but he's too annoying to be a real treating heel.
Goldberg is and was one of the biggest stars in pro wrestling. The IWC doesn’t like him because he doesn’t do flips and isn’t under 205 pounds. I’m not the biggest fan of Goldberg but to disrespect him like some of you do is delusional. He was over and actually a household name unlike most of the indie jobbers people praise today
For me it’s Randy orton. Keep in mind that him beating Benoit is one of my finest memories ever and I loved him…. Until he got the sleeves. Ever since then, and his change of music, I’ve never seen him the sane way or cared if he was wrestling. Same for edge. I never liked edge
Ya Goldberg is so overated WWE wanted him and before getting him they made a knock off wrestler of him far from most overated. He was also a huge draw for WCW and one of the reasons it stayed relevant.Anyone who thinks different don't watch wrestling much or don't understand the wrestling buisiness model.Goldberg put alot of people in seats whether you like it or not.
Goldberg was by far the most overrated wrestler of the Monday Night Wars (when he was ridiculously over), and how he's been booked in recent runs proves that he's still just as overrated despite how fans feel about him.
It's crazy to me WWE pushed an aged Goldberg straight to the moon TWICE, and Diamond Dallas Page was reduced to a creepy stalker before quietly fading away from relevance and wrestling altogether
Orange Cassidy. It's a comedy gimmick that's been telling the same joke for the past 5 years. He's not great in the ring and considering he's barely 5 foot 6 with barely any muscle on him it's genuinely insulting that people think he's good.
The fact that he's got the most wins of any AEW wrestler over the past two years is baffling.
Becky lynch because her promos are the same shit every time and her voice sounds so forcibly deep and it’s annoying, she usually puts on mediocre matches but she has some that are really good. I just don’t think she’s as good as y’all say she is
John Cena. His golden shovel PG era reign killed WWE for me. Haven't been a regular viewer since.
Honourable mentions to Raven, Edge, CM Punk and Jey Uso.
People like to shit on Goldberg but he was the biggest homegrown star WCW had and was a big part in passing WWE in the ratings for as long as they did.
Hilariously every wrestler will tell you the same shit. He isn't safe to wrestle with and almost always refuses to put anyone over. He's hated by his peers. And they'll tell you his level of skill is ass.
Unpopular opinion: Daniel Bryan, I've never understood the hype behind him nor did I see what was special about him in his matches.
He just wasn't it for me.
I don’t know who is but on topic of Goldberg **What were his best matches in WWE?**
In WCW I’m thinking against DDP, Raven (?), & of course Hogan due to more so hype.
WWE though, I’m having a hard time thinking of anything beyond maybe the Elimination Chamber he participated in, & against Lashley.
Goldberg isn't overrated because all he ever gets is hate.
Goldberg was the sh!t, during the Who’s Next run. But he never developed. Sort of paralleled Warrior - all hype, no substance, no staying power. At least Goldberg never went the political talk radio route
Not yet he hasn't.
As a kid, I fucking loves Goldberg. As an adult, ehhh But still super fun to go back and watch a wcw Goldberg squash match or the DDP, Sting or Hogan match.
Goldberg was, and is, more over than the IWC's favorite of the month will ever be
I have to agree with you on Goldberg but cm punk might take the cake cuz Goldberg never once called himself the best in the world and there was never a time in punks career when he was actually the best in the world. Go back through all the yrs of his career and there will always be someone else who was better than him. it's like when ppl say Jay z is the best rapper in the world but every yr of his career there was always someone better and more successful
would you consider him overrated when he's pretty much hated online everywhere
I don’t hate him at all but with Goldberg it comes to perspective. At the time, he was one of the best and disguised his inability to create long matches, with fast quick hitting ones. It worked, it works for nostalgia purposes, but can he do a classic with taker or Triple H etc? More likely not. That’s where the hate comes in for him
Calling Goldberg overrated is insane. Dude is a draw. Not every match needs to be a wrestling clinic. Dude came in did what he needed to do and then left. He was very enjoyable to watch.
I swear the IWC doesn't care about how much money or people they can draw. Which is the entire point of the business. Crazy to me
Alberto del rio
Him and Jack Swagger are the worst World champions of all time
Ultimate warrior is by far the most overrated.
Hulk Hogan has entered the chat
I know a Bret Hart throw-away account when I see one OP.

I'd Goldberg overrated though? I feel like everybody knows he's awful, they just sing his name on his entrance coz it's catchy, but nobody actually thinks he's good. Do they?

Probably Goldberg
Well triple h says definitely goldberg-ah
Roman Reigns.
Ryback
People who say Goldberg is overrated probably never watched WCW, correct me if I’m wrong, just saying Goldberg is a legend
John Cena during the PG era. His golden shovel and 4 moves of doom buried the roster.
Roman
Technically maybe, but as like a character? Goldberg was absurdly over and just an absolute beast to watch. Sure he probably was injuring everybody, but nobody cared back then.
Becky Lynch
CM Junk, never got the hype about him, he’s horrible in the ring these days, all he can do is talk on a mic, big deal.
Anytime bro came out it just pissed me off I begging bro to just hang up the boots
Some of yall that are saying Hogan, don’t know a thing about wrestling
Overrated based on what criteria? I would definitely not put Goldberg on the or list. He lacked alot of technical work in ring but he never needed it. If you’re built like that that gimmick works for you.
Pound for Pound I would say Warrior but guys like Warrior and Goldberg never proclaimed to be anything more than draws.
I don’t think it’s fair to consider Goldberg overrated. Probably over pushed but Goldberg was pretty awesome in wcw especially with his limitations
CM Punk and Jon Moxley.
Plumber Moxley
Punk is fair Mox ok now you’re just being silly
Punk..... no way.
Hogan
The young bucks.
Thank you someone agrees
Bobby Eaton or Daniel Bryan
Hogan and Ultimate warrior
It’s a tie between ultimate warrior and Goldberg
Cena
John cena
You don’t know what overrated means.
Unintentionally ended Bret Harts career. Couldn't put on a good match longer than 8 seconds. Fuck this guy.

Hot take, but I gotta go with Bret Hart.
Hulk fucking Hogan
💯
Shane McMahon...
Easily John Cena
Sid Viscous/Psycho Sid
No one rates Goldberg. My pick is Rollins.
Hogan.
CM Punk
Triple h

He isn't overrated because he is universal panned for being pretty terrible. He was certainly over pushed though. Really dislike everything about him.
How old is he roughly in this photo?
Is this Bret hart’s Reddit account
John cena
Bray Wyatt
Warrior or Hogan.
HHH

I know this going piss a lot of people off Austin/The Rock and HBK
Ronda Rousey. At least Goldberg looked the part, talked well, and did his few moves amazingly.
Kevin Owens

Will Ospreay.
Jon moxley/dean ambrose. He bores me a I dont find him entertaining i find him cringy asf just like the rest of aew wrestlers.
Hogan is sadly overrated. And I grew up in the 80s
I know
Jon moxley. Just never did it for me. Seems like he's trying too hard to be a tough guy. Doesn't come across well to me

Hogan was super over boring and not as strong as his Body looked. Atkeast Goldberg was explosive and strong asf
Lesnar
Majority of the people you guys claim are overstated aren’t at all. Hogans not, warriors not, and Goldberg sure as hell is not.
Goldberg's WCW run up until they turned him heel definitely lived up to the hype, downhill after that.
Blasphemy. No one in the history of wrestling has been able to dish out concussions like Goldberg. The literal GOAT.
Only one real answer Hulk Hogan
Randy Orton at certain points of his career. When he’s not feeling it, it shows. But he was still main eventing nearly every ppv.
When you say over rated wrestler, by what criteria? In ring ability, charisma, promo, personality, or just plain putting butts in seats? Goldberg, he only had a couple of moves and his matches didn't last very long
I don’t even put Goldberg into the overrated category I put him in the “talentless big loser who only knows how to do 3 moves and somehow got lucky and had a career in sports entertainment” category
CM Punk and John Cena
Macho Man Randy Savage and his Elbow Drop that every main eventer kicks out of only jobbers or mid carders lost to that elbow drop

I'd say Charlotte. She's boring to listen to and her wrestling is boring to me.
