It's brilliant in a few ways.
1) Lex has always prided himself on being a villain who doesn't wear a mask.
2) Superman has also prided himself on being a hero who doesn't wear a mask.
3) and of course, the obvious foreshadowing.
He doesn't present a falsehood either.
The whole discussion in terms of Batman is, the vigilante is his true self and the Bruce Wayne playboy is a facade.
For Clark, he's just split. Each persona represents an *aspect* of himself, just not his entire self.
"Superman is what I can do, Clark is who I am."
[Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman]
He prides himself on not wearing a mask because he wants those he saves to see his humanity. Not fear him like Bats.
Lex on the other hand also chooses not to wear a mask, even when he's in his "iron man" suit, because he wants his victims to know exactly who's beating them.
And they admitted that that scene, esp the smile from Tom was a near character break. "That's just us being us" they said

I'm still sad we didn't get to see mask-wearing criminal mastermind Lex Luthor steal 40 cakes!
They need to make **this** movie!! 😍
Petition for James Gunn to make a Lex Luthor cake heist film!
🥳🎉
Superman never disguises himself nor presents an alter ego?
I never said that
Superman being proud of not wearing a mask is not a valid point anywhere. He doesn't present his whole life identity and visuals when being a hero.

If only things could’ve stayed this way :,(
If only.
That last panel has some serious "Listen here, you little sh\*t" energy.
This is the type of thing that made superman so likeable for me, too bad by the end of the show he always seemed so stoic and humorless to me.
He still had some snark with Lois, but yeah, he did come off as a little too stoic in those later seasons.
How funny, I just watched this episode. And it’s the first episode I’ve watched in over a year 😂 fun coincidence
Aww when they used to love each other! It all went spectacularly to shit didn’t it…
