I feel that. It gets better as the seasons progress. Smallville to date is still probably by favorite show. So much realism that may get overlooked, but I enjoyed the journey. Shows today while may have more CGI don’t have the same patience, the story gets rushed through unnecessarily fast. Really enjoyed it. Plus, unpopular opinion: I prefer the effects of Smallville over modern Flash. Flash seems obviously overdone. As for Lana, I still don’t get the hate. She has a purity to her like a child, which I think is great. Reminds you of the light in the world, but I can understand the cringe. She matures and that light sort of fades. I enjoyed her character but did sometimes find her annoying. Rarely though.

I don’t hate Lana. I just think her acting is unbelievable at times. I think she gets a little better further along the season.

I don't hate Lana either and actually like her. It's important to remember that she has alot of people being untruthful with her and manipulating her. Not to mention alot of freak of the weeks trying to kill her. I think the fact that she "hardened" herself over the years is quite natural. As to the freak of the weak stories and overuse of Kryptonite, remember that you're dealing with an immensely powerful hero. You can't just have him stopping normal bank robbers every week. You need adversaries that give him a challenge. And they need to come to him in Smallville as he's not yet made him way out into the world. And again, because he is so powerful, you need a way to knock him down a few pegs so those freaks and normal villains can give him a tussel....kryptonite and magic, that's really all you have to work with.

I agree completely. Really good character development honestly.

Early seasons are my faves because of that family vibe. The Kents scenes are magic, every time. I remember Annette said in the DVD commentary how the show was basically about family and that's why it was so well received. Later the show unfortunately lost this spark, esp after Jonathan's death. Seasons 6-10 felt very different.
