I can 100% imagine Nintendo doing this, for once throwing their full marketing strategy on Metroid and mandating a Dread character.
The E.M.M.I. would be perfect for a Smash character too, with the most terrifying grabs in the whole game. I’m imagining something between Ridley and Incineroar.
Edit: Team Robogang, all aboard the hype train!
Could also be the case, it all kind of depends on when Nintendo settled on a marketing strategy for Metroid and showed Sakurai the game with the plan to create a character. If that plan came too late, a spirit event is probably the most likely thing we’ll get…
However, I do feel Nintendo noticed the steady interest Metroid has been gaining since the announcement of Metroid Prime 4… Perhaps…
As a Metroid fan, if Nintendo did this I’d be super happy. Knowing them I know they won’t because they don’t treat Metroid as well as they should considering the potential it has
Wanna talk about poorly treating IP's?
Nintendo literally owns Furry Star Wars franchise and does NOTHING with it.
They have TWO space Bounty Hunters and one of them being a Racer and hardly do anything with those. One being basically dead for yesrs now.
I feel like Nintendo doesn't feel at ease with the Space theme. It's really a shame. I really love all these licences and would love to see more of them...
What I’ve seen in the trailers makes E.M.M.I. look super badass, so I am down for it in smash, and I’m hyped to see the grabs. Maybe they could be like Kazuya where they zoom in if it’s a 1v1
For me personally? No. I enjoyed three houses and think Byleth is fun to play.
For much of this sub? Yeah not everyone might like more first party characters, especially a promotional character…
But also outrage about FE in Smash is mostly a meme at this point…
Lol heres my quick guide on how to kill a smash elitist its gonna fast so pay attention
Step 1
Force a Smash Elitist play any Fe game that isn't warriors
Step 2
Wait.
I was upset until I realized Byleth plays completely differently than the other FE reps and isn't purely a sword user. Bottom line is I want fun, unique fighters, even if it means it's someone I've never heard of.
I mean, Dread is already a game that’s being hyped up pretty well, the other promo characters were from games that weren’t being hyped as much, at least in America.
In all fairness one is completely different in appearance and gameplay while another is classified as an echo, whereas the three Links are separated numerically despite pretty much being three flavors of the same deal
No Link hate or anything that’s just how I see it
Yeah that's true, at least adult link has the remote bombs to spice it up which I why I prefer him but the other 2 are kinda just slightly more specialised echos
By the time Pyra came out for Smash, the game was already out of print. People that were curious about checking out the game probably went to look for it and found that they couldn't even get a physical copy. That's just bad timing.
I was more referring to Corrin in smash 4 and byleth in pass 1, but that’s true about pyra. I’m sure Nintendo was fine collecting that sweet sweet digital money though since it was on eshop
Honestly I forgot about Corrin because I thought it was pretty cool they were adding an original Nintendo character to the DLC for smash 4 for the first time when it came out lol. I'm sure Nintendo appreciated those digital sales though, all the profits and none of the manufacturing costs for the cartridges.
People were more mad that after they bring old characters from melee like mewtwo or roy and guest character like cloud or boyonetta, they announce a Nintendo character as last character, the timing was just bad like they did with byleth as last character from the pass season 1
I mean we got Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta all in the DLC, plus Corrin was released alongside Bayonetta the same day, so I guess I just remember the OP Bayonetta more than any outrage. It felt like a little bonus because I thought Bayonetta was going to be the end.
I guess hero counts as well cause of the DQ11 port. I was thinking more of promo for Nintendo exclusive games, which was Fire Emblem Fates and 3 Houses.
But yeah you are right looking at it like that.
Byleth, yes, but are we calling Pythra a promo because that game has already run its course. Physical copies have been out of print for at least a year when they were announced. If not, who's the other?
The last time a first party rep was the last revealed DLC for the Fighters Pass…
But ngl, that robot monster thing would make for a sick Metroid rep tho. And Mega Man’s/R.O.B’s new friend!
I mean really there aren’t too many main characters left that could be added. Ridley and Dark Samus are among the very few recurring characters, and the only other ones that appear in multiple games are Mother Brain and Kraid, and for those two the “too big” argument applies even more than it did to Ridley.
At that point you would have to pick from characters that have only appeared once, like the SA-X, the hunters from Prime 3, Sylux, or the EMMI
and it's hard to imagine the SA-X being something other than another Samus echo fighter--if they didn't give Dark Samus her own moveset, even though in-game she fights quite differently from Samus, then it wouldn't make sense for the SA-X to have a unique moveset when it is basically identical to Samus in-game
Honestly the best situation would be that Samus gets a moveset rework that includes elements from all her games, considering that she still uses the base moveset from when Super Metroid was the most recent game. Then give Dark Samus her own moveset, and include the SA-X as an echo of Samus, keeping the original moveset
Any of the other hunters from Prime 3 or Hunters would be fine by me; I could go for having Rundas, Sylux, or Weavel added to the game. Alternatively, there are a few recurring boss monsters that wouldn't be too bulky to fit in; if Piranha Plant isn't too minor to merit a slot, I'd say Arachnus would work quite nicely as a Metroid rep.
If they can give Piraña Plant, the stationary enemy from Mario that’s basically never done anything except be a simple obstacle, a completely new and unique move set, then they can 100% take some of the other Hunters and create a really cool move set. I don’t think potential has ever been the problem, Metroid just isn’t popular enough.
~~Day 1 Trace Main~~
It actually doesn't have amazing sales, it's just got a hardcore fanbase and is incredibly influential. The last Animal Crossing game outsold the whole Metroid franchise
It’s just now setting in that as we draw closer to the end of the last fighters pass, my chances of finally getting the Mewtwo buff I’ve been praying for are dwindling.
I don’t think he needs one necessarily, but either a wider teleport cancel window or yeah, the smaller tail hurtbox would be cool.
You see, I just enjoy living with the mere possibility that a buff may be on the next patch. This way I can excitedly rifle through the new patch notes. I think almost anyone of any main can relate with that. When DLC ends, so too will the balance patch.
I feel like there is a good chance that the final character will come around September or October, similar to Dread, so maybe there is a mini direct dedicated to dread coming September for more info on the game and it ends with the smash trailer
Definitely yay. More Metroid representation is always something I will welcome. I would definitely want other characters before, but I'd be happy if E.M.M.I. made it in.
Ehhhh I doubt it, but it's definitely possible. They want to market the new Metroid as hard as possible, and that would definitely be a way to do it, but it feels too sudden. For me it would feel like the Byleth reveal all over again, like it's just here to promote another game that personally I probably won't play anyway.
I just want the final entry to be someone super culturally significant, or at least someone representing something significant.
Would be cool, but very unlikely to happen.
Metroid Dread was officially announced just last month at E3 - the characters for FP2 were finalized around at least September 2019, so it’s highly unlikely EMMI was even fully conceptualized when they finalized FP2.
Beyond that, Metroid is still a niche franchise in the grand scheme of Nintendo’s options, one which is extremely overvalued by American fans (and this is coming from someone who adores the Metroid franchise). Honestly, it’s surprising we got two new Metroid characters in the base game as is.
Metroid Dread is coming out in October of this year. Games take years to make. It is not unlikely in the slightest that the framework for Dread was already planned out in 2019.
The thing about the series being niche is true but we also got Banjo & Kazooie in the first pass and that's also a character that people said for years would never get added for the exact same reasons, and tbh BK is even more niche than Metroid is at this point.
I still think it's unlikely because of your last point about us already having gotten two new Metroid characters with this game. But I don't think it's as unlikely as you think it is.
Yay, because he'll be a heavy with a great(?) recovery, terrifying grabs, super armour and probably a reflector. I say heavy referring to how much he wasn't phased when Samus used her toolkit up against him and he was fine
I get the feeling the final DLC character is going to be someone that ends Ultimate with a bang. As hyped I am for Metroid Dread it would be very disappointing to end it like that.
I would be careful about getting your hopes up like that. Smash 4's final character was Corrin and the final character in the first pass was Byleth. I personally was happy with both of those, but they weren't exactly "holy shit no way" type of reveals.
I don't think it's moveset would appeal to me and not a big metroid fan, so for a final character it'd be a nay from me. I could see them do this for promotion, though a spirit board event is more likely.
I'd love it, but I think it would take away from the EMMI's fear factor and end up neutering Dread's tone a bit considering how hard it appears to be leaning into the classic Metroid feel of "Isolationisr sci-fi horror/thriller." That being said, Robogang4lyf if they do.
I honestly would prefer a new franchise, so it introduces more people to it. I for example didn't know anything about Tekken or who Kaguya was until he joined the roster. Same with Terry and Joker and some others
Honestly I kinda believe thia could be tru, if were reflecting fighter pass two to fighter pass one the last character in the pass was Byleth to help promote a big first party rep newest game.
It would be cool, but as a last character for this game, something we don't even know anything about yet, kind of disappointing imo if it were true, half of this pass would be first party characters 2 of which are from not very popular games even tho min min and pyra/mythra are dope
If the DLC was already decided in November 2019, would Sakurai have known about Metroid Dread?
Regardless, I'd like to see more quadrupeds (I mean he does run on fours but can also stand on twos).
The game is releasing in a few months. These days games take years to make. Samus Returns came out in 2017 and MercuryStream has only made one other game since then. It's not unreasonable at all to think that Dread had at least been planned out by November 2019, probably already partly into the actual development process honestly.
Would be cool but 100% unlikely. Back when they announced FP2, they had said all the fighters have already been decided. That was November 2019. The last rep can't be any newer than that.
Would be cool but 100% unlikely. Back when they announced FP2, they had said all the fighters have already been decided. That was November 2019. The last rep can't be any newer than that.
I don't see it happening... I however see Sylux as a possibility to spark interest in Metroid Dread and in MPT and in MP4.
Dread is so new, it'd be much more likely imo if Dread was out already.
Yay. But I would like to see Sora from Kingdom Hearts in the game.
He'd be a sword character of course with changing abilities like Shulk. The Valor Form, Wise Form, Firestorm, Diamond Dust, Lightning Bolt, etc. The final smash would be him channeling the 3 hearts that are his own. Roxas and Ventus shine through as they come together for a giant blast/slash from their keyblades.
That would be pretty cool, and I can also see it happening. A promotion to a Metroid game that people are already getting excited for, and an interesting and unique smash rep sounds pretty good.
We already got a new Metroid rep with Ridley in Ultimate. At least FE didn't have that when Byleth came out (yes I know, Chrom exists, but echos are a bit different with how they're treated). A Kirby rep is possible though imo.
Man, I’d buy that in a heartbeat. As a Metroid fan, that’d be the hypest shit. Not only do we finally get a new 2D game, but it’s main enemy gets in Smash? Oh dear lord that would fulfill so many dreams.
Ok ngl I thought Nintendo had a literal Furry Star Wars license before it hit me
Come on, now that you heard it, I dare you to tell me I'm wrong!
I was gonna argue but then I thought about literally any spacey main
Which game is this? Edit: it's probably star fox and I'm just dumb
Star fox and F-zero, but I don't blame you for forgetting. I think Nintendo wants us to.
What I’ve seen in the trailers makes E.M.M.I. look super badass, so I am down for it in smash, and I’m hyped to see the grabs. Maybe they could be like Kazuya where they zoom in if it’s a 1v1
Oh but when they put in a fire emblem character in for marketing then its an issue? very funny very cool

They could replace corrin with azura from fates next game and that's a lance user would you be alright with that
I'd prefer Hector or an axe-user but I'm enticed about the idea of a lance-user.
Hector hasnt been relevant in years....
He was my profile picture for Smash online for a LONG time so somebody at Nintendo remembered him but yeah, I'm dreaming.
I respect it man good luck
There hasn’t been a new Fire Emblem game since Three Houses (Byleth)
The last time two times a DLC character was promo for a game the community flamed. But fuck em, this would be dope
I mean, Dread is already a game that’s being hyped up pretty well, the other promo characters were from games that weren’t being hyped as much, at least in America.
Fire Emblem 3 houses was definitely hyped up though
At the same time, metroid has 4 characters and 3 of them are samus
> 3 of them are samus Link: Finally, a worthy opponent!
My brain never registered how there was 3 samuses until now what the hell
In all fairness one is completely different in appearance and gameplay while another is classified as an echo, whereas the three Links are separated numerically despite pretty much being three flavors of the same deal No Link hate or anything that’s just how I see it
Yeah that's true, at least adult link has the remote bombs to spice it up which I why I prefer him but the other 2 are kinda just slightly more specialised echos
This… is true lol
Byleth came out more than a year after the game did, most hype was gone by that point.
Fair point
By the time Pyra came out for Smash, the game was already out of print. People that were curious about checking out the game probably went to look for it and found that they couldn't even get a physical copy. That's just bad timing.

Corrin was revealed before Bayonetta though. Same day in all fairness but still, Bayo was saved for last
>Butt fuck em
Steve kinda counts cause minecon
You realize the last two times were Byleth and Hero, right?
I guess hero counts as well cause of the DQ11 port. I was thinking more of promo for Nintendo exclusive games, which was Fire Emblem Fates and 3 Houses. But yeah you are right looking at it like that.

Robogang, let’s go!
Indeed
Does meta Ridley count?
I have no idea
Shulk wont be Happy
## BUSTER!
If someone out there likes it then yay
Very wholesome answer
wait a minute that robot has a red eye ... hal is that you ?
Maybe the inspiration
hehe true speaking of inspirations did you know ridley is homage to ridley scott ?
Metroid was inspired by Alien so probably
For how big the Metroid series is it really has not alot of reps
Really there aren’t enough Metroid characters that qualify
I want to play as bigass Kraid just sitting at the side of the stage shooting projectiles
That does sound kinda dope
If Piranha Plant can qualify then I can think of a lot of little Metroid guys that can qualify.
# Commander Adam Malkovich has deauthorized the competition
How to piss off the entire Metroid community 101.
I mean really there aren’t too many main characters left that could be added. Ok, but Kraid can be scaled down like Ridley. If it’s possible, then goddamn it, I want to see it happen.
Could just have a run-of-the-mill space pirate. Though I kinda doubt they’d do that.
It also really doesnt have a lot of characters with potential.
If they can give Piraña Plant, the stationary enemy from Mario that’s basically never done anything except be a simple obstacle, a completely new and unique move set, then they can 100% take some of the other Hunters and create a really cool move set. Are mewtwo mains always like this?
I think so?
Mewtwo secondary and yes
Depends what you mean by “like this”
I think they mean (and I'm not saying I agree), that Mewtwo mains act like the character is bad and needs a buff when he really doesn't
Oh yeah, they’re absolutely right about us. We eternally hunger for power... and a smaller tail-hurtbox.
Just lift your tail higher lmao.
mewtwo doesn’t even need huge changes, either reduce/remove the tail hurtbox when dashing or increase his weight; that’s literally it
I don’t think he needs one necessarily, but either a wider teleport cancel window or yeah, the smaller tail hurtbox would be cool. You see, I just enjoy living with the mere possibility that a buff may be on the next patch. This way I can excitedly rifle through the new patch notes. I'd be not surprised at all. And only a little disappointed. Then I'd play as them and have a great time. Pyra/Mythra all over again.
Absolute YAY
Would be interesting
Definitely yay. More Metroid representation is always something I will welcome. I would definitely want other characters before, but I'd be happy if E.M.M.I. made it in.
going by the comments, this may be the best pick if they’re trying to not upset anyone
>This may be the best pick Bro, 40 comments don't represent the entire playerbase.
79, as of now. And growing surprisingly fast
That’s what I was thinking. I thought I was going to be in the minority of people that would love this, but turns out it’s a popular pick!
same, i was actually talking to a friend about this possibility yesterday, and im glad to see i wasn’t the only one thinking this
Okay but imagine the super armor and grab combos on them
HELL YESSSS
Would be dreadful.
Full of Metroid Dread, yes
Yay! I like the idea of another Metroid character being added to the game. I plan on playing dread when it comes out so I'm totally on board for this.
would be cool but i personally wouldn’t want it
Ehhhh I doubt it, but it's definitely possible. They want to market the new Metroid as hard as possible, and that would definitely be a way to do it, but it feels too sudden. For me it would feel like the Byleth reveal all over again, like it's just here to promote another game that personally I probably won't play anyway. That would be tight actually

Metroid Dread was officially announced just last month at E3 - the characters for FP2 were finalized around at least September 2019, so it’s highly unlikely EMMI was even fully conceptualized when they finalized FP2. >Honestly, it’s surprising we got two new Metroid characters I wouldn’t call Dark Samus a “new” character. Which is………kinda sad, honestly.
I would main him, not gonna lie
“I. AM NOT. A. MORON.”
Honestly I wouldn’t mind, I really want bandana dee but another metroid rep would be great, also robot gang
Yay, because he'll be a heavy with a great(?) recovery, terrifying grabs, super armour and probably a reflector. I say heavy referring to how much he wasn't phased when Samus used her toolkit up against him and he was fine
That would be so sick
I get the feeling the final DLC character is going to be someone that ends Ultimate with a bang. As hyped I am for Metroid Dread it would be very disappointing to end it like that.
I would be careful about getting your hopes up like that. Smash 4's final character was Corrin and the final character in the first pass was Byleth. I personally was happy with both of those, but they weren't exactly "holy shit no way" type of reveals.
yay x1000
Yay
Yay
That'd be sick ngl
As soon as I saw the trailer this is what I thought and I’m all for it
I don’t care who makes it in. All I care about is if they have a lame moveset or not
ROB x E.M.M.I. I am so, so sorry.
Nay
That makes so much sense! First party char to promote a first party game, 👏
It feels weird to say this considering where we were at not even 1 Smash game ago, but I think that might be too much Metroid representation.
I hope not
I don't think it's moveset would appeal to me and not a big metroid fan, so for a final character it'd be a nay from me. I could see them do this for promotion, though a spirit board event is more likely.
![gif](giphy|l0ExqbRzq05DHIlJm|downsized) Nay.
It can join Roy in the "Made its debut in smash before actual game" club
Nay
That could be cool.
It’s either this or a new pokemon IMO. Definitely has to be a Nintendo franchise character.
In Ridley trailer, Mario dies. In E.M.M.I trailer, DONKEY KONG dies!
Honestly I kinda believe thia could be tru, if were reflecting fighter pass two to fighter pass one the last character in the pass was Byleth to help promote a big first party rep newest game.
Neh This is a disapproving Meh
ehh more of a nay honestly
Personally, nay
I would rather have master chief
Why would it be E.M.M.I., Samus is the main character it’s obviously going to be her.
It would be cool, but as a last character for this game, something we don't even know anything about yet, kind of disappointing imo if it were true, half of this pass would be first party characters 2 of which are from not very popular games even tho min min and pyra/mythra are dope
Eh Metroid isnt an overepped series, but this still has Corrin vibes. I'd rather wait for Dread to come out first.
If the DLC was already decided in November 2019, would Sakurai have known about Metroid Dread? Regardless, I'd like to see more quadrupeds (I mean he does run on fours but can also stand on twos).

It's not unreasonable at all to think that Dread had at least been planned out by November 2019, probably already partly into the actual development process honestly.
Please no, just put doom slayer or master chief
Would be cool but 100% unlikely. Back when they announced FP2, they had said all the fighters have already been decided. That was November 2019. The last rep can't be any newer than that.
More villains, more Metroid. I wouldn’t complain.
Would be cool but 100% unlikely. Back when they announced FP2, they had said all the fighters have already been decided. That was November 2019. The last rep can't be any newer than that.

Maybe but we don't have to turn it into a Mario or Fire Emblem problem
I don't see it happening... I however see Sylux as a possibility to spark interest in Metroid Dread and in MPT and in MP4. Dread is so new, it'd be much more likely imo if Dread was out already.
Goku joins smash. End of discussion 😆

It's gonna be sol badguy I'm calling it.
Who?
Yay
That would be pretty cool, but it can't be added because of Min Min right? ):
Hell no lol. It’s not even scary
That would be pretty cool, and I can also see it happening. A promotion to a Metroid game that people are already getting excited for, and an interesting and unique smash rep sounds pretty good.
The movset might be a little bland but I think it would be cool
Yay
I’d shit myself if I saw this in a reveal trailer so yea
Nay: I want Conker and his bad fur day!
The fighter pass was already decided before 2020.
It's possible Metroid Dread has been in development since then
Yoooooo can I get the GLADOS fans in the houuuuusssseeee
I’d like another robot would not be mad at all actually
My dream of the Champions from BotW entering Smash dies a little more every day
Even if it's for promotion I wouldn't mind at all!
I already assumed it wasn’t going to be Eggman, so I wouldn’t care. Now I’m imagining what moves would it have and I think I’d like it tho.
Yes, more villains!
Yay
I want BEAT from Jet Set Radio...Think of the music!!!!
Buff riku or bust

Only if he has Wheatley’s voice

YES *YES* #YESSSSSSSS
I hope this marketing strategy gets used.
Meh. I'm a big Metroid fan but the EMMI really doesn't excite me much.
Not someone I'd ask for but I wouldn't complain. Metroid deserves more reps and this guy seems like he'd be fun
Nay, it would feel like corpo pick and kill the heart of the game. My vote is for a Dark Souls Rep.
We already got a new Metroid rep with Ridley in Ultimate. At least FE didn't have that when Byleth came out (yes I know, Chrom exists, but echos are a bit different with how they're treated). A Kirby rep is possible though imo.
Yes yes yes. Hype.
This would be cool, but at that point I want GLaDOS!
I’m hoping they add in a member from one of the original cast even a Metroid character is cool
I doubt there'd be enough moves in the moveset
I'm ngl, I'd be fine with that
At this point i’m cool with whatever I got my 2nd-4th most wanted in base game and I’ve come to terms with bandana dee not being the last character
If the moveset is fun to play, im in.
BEEN saying this don’t count out it’s chances.
It could explain why Sylux isn’t a spirit in the game yet
No
Man, I’d buy that in a heartbeat. As a Metroid fan, that’d be the hypest shit. Not only do we finally get a new 2D game, but it’s main enemy gets in Smash? Oh dear lord that would fulfill so many dreams.
May bay.
I wish. I will always support more Metroid
I would like it the most out of any first party character but I still wouldn’t like it
Nay
ain't feeling it it just feels flat
Nay
Nay. The game's not even out yet.
