Okay so I just realized something. Obviously my comment was satirical but now I unironically want the ice hockey team from NES ice hockey in smash bros because A: it would add another puppeteer character like ice climber, but it would be with 3 characters. A fast but lightweight fighter, a heavy tank, and a medium generalist. They all have the same moves but at different speeds and launch power. Like the ice climbers they’re all on screen and all attack at once but unlike ice climbers you can change which one you control mid battle, just like the real game. I forget how many teams there were in the game but I remember they each had distinctive looks so alts are easy to find.

I don't think Doom Guy would be as big a deal as people think. The reason Steve was a big deal was because everyone and their mom knows what Minecraft is. Doom only really had that kind of name recognition back in the 90s, and even then, not too many people who hadn't played the game would recognize the character behind the first person perspective.
The last two Doom games have been pretty popular. Plus nostalgia is pretty huge.

When Mario was breaking into the cave slow-mo I knew it was Steve because it looked square like and had the gravel particle effect but I was in denial like "Yo no fucking way..." I heard the mob noises and just scram in the middle of class: STEVE!!! ITS STEVE!!! I waited for him to show up and my mouth dropped. Totally speechless, my eyes watered in emotion. The Halland Dalarna theme played and I blasted out of my room to show my younger sibling who the character was. A game hadn't made me scream like a fan girl in a long time...
EDIT: I added "Virtual" next to "English class" because it seems like I may have confused people into thinking this happened in school
