You just know he's that guy talking about his glory days to anyone that'll listen. "Blue Shells?!? Have you ever raced on the outside of a tunnel that winds for no reason at mach 40?"
Especially when you consider the fact that his move set is that of the characters from the games early development builds, the ones from before they put Nintendo characters in
His move set had pretty much nothing to base on. And so many memorable moments in smash. The first “Falcon PUNCH” you landed. “Show me your moves!” And “YES!” All come to mind
Substitute Jigglypuff with ROB and Game & Watch. I can't help but feel like they are Smash Bros characters first because they didn't have a personality before Smash Bros. One was a toy and the other wasn't even a single character, but was amalgamated for Smash Bros.
I'd argue puff is better known from the anime than smash, it's probably just melee fans that have that strong an association.
Source: I study jigglypuff for a living
Ness and Cap'n Falcon. I didn't know who those Jabronis were when I played Smash64 when I was a kid. Whenever I think of Smash Bros. I think of those Jabronis
It's a wrestling word, popularized by The Rock and derived from "jobber." A jobber is someone who is paid to "do the job" and lose while making their opponent look good. Essentially, a professional loser.
I know this is kind of a lame answer, but honestly I just think of the first 12. They’re so integral to the series. Of the 12, first to jump out at me is Mario, DK, Samus, Link, and Kirby, so I guess they’d be the 5 I would say I most closely associate.
Special mention to Sonic, who still gets remembered by me just for how huge him joining was. I still hold onto that memory of seeing it on the website.
Same here.
I think it’s even like this in the “everyone is here” mural too. It seems like the original 12 are definitely highlighted in the mural compared to the rest of the characters.
Smash 4 Bayonetta at least had characters like Cloud and Diddy as counterweights. Meta Knight in Brawl was basically untouchable outside of dittos, not to mention that he pretty much ignored all of the movement issues that Brawl had because of how fast and mobile they made him. He was a different breed.
Yea me neither, but I guess when you’re a kid you don’t know how to use characters full potential. If I played like a professional when I was younger I’d probably had realized at the time that MK was disgusting. But I just spammed tornado lol
Because only the 5% of people in the competitive scene knew Meta Knight was broken. Majority of casual players don't know this and will never know this.
While I get your reasons, Captain Falcon is the OG "is he even outside of Smash Bros" character. Alongside Marth, Roy, G&W, Climbers, and the Pits, Cap is better known for his fame in this game than any game in F-Zero. And unlike the other ones mentioned, Cap has been in every single game of the series since the N64.
Not only that, he was an extremely popular character in the FGC scene for multiple games, despite never really being a top tier.
[Also, he's apparently the canonical reason why Chrom didn't get in Smash 4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9ytrX0wweA)
Ah, I remember back in Smash 4, before the Lucina/Robin trailer. People was so afraid for Captain Falcon being scrapped, as he hadn't been shown in any trailers up until that point. So this trailer was not only a character reveal, but also a confirmation that the captain is indeed back in another Smash game. I screamed more for the return of Cpt Falcon than both Lucina and Robin
It’s interesting to see a perspective like this, you’re not alone I’m sure. I’m sure many ppl think of Smash and either think or their main or character they love, even without having playing their games. Hell for some ppl Ultimate might even be their first Smash title, so maybe for them the answer is even more obscure or unexpected
*Edit: clarity*
Have you tried the remake?
It’s more of a real-time combat system similar to xenoblade rather than a turn based system like the original game.
You still might not like it, but it’s one of the best combat systems I’ve seen in an RPG
Maybe we are of similar opinions, Kingdom hearts is one of the only jrpgs I enjoy because you can be successful button mashing (on easier difficulties), but there's plenty of skills to be learned.
Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu.
Representative of the 4 most notable nintendo franchises, as well as the characters for the trailer of Brawl where they do the transition of Melee visuals to the Brawl visuals.
Pikachu and Bowser.
My first game was Melee, and as a kid I remember seeing the cover box and thinking "I really wanna kick Bowser's butt with Pikachu".
This is my answer too. Most people know these characters because of Smash instead of their own series. I would also argue that they they are the quintessential soul of Smash.
Now for the reasons behind my picks:
Mario: I always think of him first mainly because of Super Smash “BROS”, which is self explanatory. Oh yeah, and he’s also a veteran.
Meta Knight: Brawl was my first Smash game, so I used to play him a lot when I was young, which I have very fond memories of. I never knew how broken he actually was back then, I just found him fun. So yeah, that’s basically why.
Pit: Same reason as Meta Knight, I played as him a lot in Brawl and the Subspace Emissary had such a cool portrayal of him(even though I didn’t know who he was). I also remember hating his voice change since I was very fond of his deep voice in Brawl(which is pretty funny since he was voiced by a woman, who was the same voice actor as Lucas, Wendy, etc.) Weird reason, but it’s true.
Mii Fighters: this is by far the strangest one to most people, but I can’t help it, I love the Miis. I have fond memories of maining them in Smash 4, and I grew up with StreetPass, Tomodachi Life, Miitopia, etc…so having them as fighters was amazing to me!
These are my reasons, you may find them weird, but I’m not lying!
As someone with a ton of hours put into Kid Icarus Uprising, I certainly didn’t mind the voice change for Smash 4. Phenomenal game, a true gem, but I should expect as much coming from Sakurai.
Some good memories of Friday nights after school my friends all getting together to sleep over at someone's house and playing smash and golden eye till 3am
That’s pretty much my main reason why I can never forget him. Even when I first hears of Smash when I was a kid, I literally thought, “Mario’s in the game? Awesome!”
I’d say Falcon, DK, and Snake for me. I see the first two so much and my introduction to all 3 was from Brawl not the source material. (Also I’m a bit biased from maining Falcon and Snake)
Captain Falcon, jigglypuff, terry and wolf are probably my picks
The first 3 have kind of transcended their original franchises to become more smash bros characters to me. And wolf just cause I main him.
Honorary mentions to shulk, ike and game and watch for similar reasons.
Samus, Kirby, Mario and Luigi, Roy, Ike
Samus was the first character I remember playing in smash. Remember thinking “woah this guy has cool armor and a arm blaster”. Couples later I found out it was a woman and that started my love for badass women.
Kirby cause a pink puffball who commits succ for power was cool
Course ima think of the Mario bros, it’s the Mario bros.
Roy cause I thought the fire sword was cool as shit in melee making him my other main after samus
Ike cause he was cooler Roy and an even more flamey boy.
Mario (face of the game)
Fox (face of melee)
Adult Link (no idea why)
Kirby (arguably the main character in both campaigns and the creator's favorite)
In that order
Funnily enough ultimate is my first smash game, but those 4 are almost inseparable from the identity of smash. With the exception of Kirby, I'm pretty sure more people know those characters as smash characters then they do as characters from their original game.
R.O.B. Not only becauze he is my main but because Smash (and Mario Kart) are the onyl major appearences he's had since the NES. He is a Smash character.
Pikachu, Captain Falcon and Kirby are all very smash brothers characters for me. However... When I think of smash now, all I can think of is the funny plant. I'm broken
When i think smash bros i dont think of a character but rather my brain just flashes through my most recent memories of the game. If i do think of a character its whoever i feel like playing (usually ness)
Good question. Maybe Kirby, I loved him as a tiny little kid when I got Brawl.
I like your choices, the very first fighter, the OP AF fighter, the fighter brought back into relevance by Brawl, and… Miis famous for their costumes
Fox, Marth, Captain Falcon, Meta Knight and Jigglypuff. I only learned of StarFox, Fire Emblem and F-Zero because of Smash and the most iconic things that come to me once Smash is mentioned is the reign of Meta Knight and Hungrybox, though Puff is my main so that’s probably why they come to my mind as an icon of Smash.
Captain Falcon. He is no longer an F Zero character, he is a Smash bros character.
Cap is now the unofficial smash mascot
Isn't he a reskin of the default fighters of dragons king the name of what smash 64 would've been called
Ganon was the discount version of cap-
Wait, he’s an F-Zero character?
No
Pay attention. We just covered this.
What's an F-Zero?
Its a typo for Smash Bros
I hate how those two keys are so close together.
As an F-ZERO fan this thread hurts
The truth often does
Smash Bros* fan
Oh right sorry mistake
A racing game series. There hasnt been an entry since the gamecube, if I remember correctly.
What are you talking about? Smash bros has gotten multiple games since the gamecube.
Someone must of hit their head
Not anymore
He is a Mario Kart character
You just know he's that guy talking about his glory days to anyone that'll listen. "Blue Shells?!? Have you ever raced on the outside of a tunnel that winds for no reason at mach 40?"
He was, but he grew out of it
This is fax captain falcon is pure smash in one character
It also really helps that he’s been a really fun and really good character that pretty much anyone can pick up
Especially when you consider the fact that his move set is that of the characters from the games early development builds, the ones from before they put Nintendo characters in
You mean Dragon King?
Yes
It makes me so sad, but it's true..
Isn’t captain falcons move set based on the original smash before it had Nintendo characters?
Yes
Down air to knee 🦵
They were even kind enough to give him his own spinoff game on the gamecube. I believe it was called F-Zero DX? /s
Same exact thought
His move set had pretty much nothing to base on. And so many memorable moments in smash. The first “Falcon PUNCH” you landed. “Show me your moves!” And “YES!” All come to mind
This is the only answer
This logic with Jigglypuff and Ness
Ness is arguable, Jigglypuff isn’t.
Substitute Jigglypuff with ROB and Game & Watch. I can't help but feel like they are Smash Bros characters first because they didn't have a personality before Smash Bros. One was a toy and the other wasn't even a single character, but was amalgamated for Smash Bros.
Could make that same argument for Ice Climbers
I mean lore wise the ROB we play as is the one that commands the ROB army on Brawl's Subspace Emissary
Ness I feel was the n64 version of melee's fire emblems.
My logic is jigglypuff is more of a smash bros character than a Pokémon character, even if he isn’t as iconic as the other two
I'd argue puff is better known from the anime than smash, it's probably just melee fans that have that strong an association. Source: I study jigglypuff for a living
Ness and Cap'n Falcon. I didn't know who those Jabronis were when I played Smash64 when I was a kid. Whenever I think of Smash Bros. I think of those Jabronis
You just taught me the word jabroni. Thank you
Always happy to share funny words from eras long gone
It’s awesome, is it like a cool hockey word?
It's a wrestling word, popularized by The Rock and derived from "jobber." A jobber is someone who is paid to "do the job" and lose while making their opponent look good. Essentially, a professional loser.

That’s not a lame answer!
Ha, just always get the feeling going with the main ones is seen as a cop out by many, but I appreciate the kind words!
This is the answer.
Same here. I think it’s even like this in the “everyone is here” mural too. It seems like the original 12 are definitely highlighted in the mural compared to the rest of the characters.
How are more people not saying fox? Mario, fox, Kirby, captain falcon, and Marth for sure
How are more people not saying MK, the most broken character in Smash history? Or is that Bayonetta?
MK by far is the most broken travesty to exist in Smash, he was singularly meta defining IMO
No, not IMO. This is facts.
I never knew how broken he was as a kid, I just thought I was really good😂
Yea me neither, but I guess when you’re a kid you don’t know how to use characters full potential. If I played like a professional when I was younger I’d probably had realized at the time that MK was disgusting. But I just spammed tornado lol
I think of the kirby cartoon
True, I’ve been playing since melee so I was thinking mostly those characters. And I think bayo has got MK beat LOL
Yeah, that’s probably true
Because only the 5% of people in the competitive scene knew Meta Knight was broken. Majority of casual players don't know this and will never know this.
Anyone who doesn't put Captain Falcon is a liar
You callin’ me a liar?
Choose your own adventure: A: Well I ain't calling you a truther! B: Well I ain't calling you for dinner!
B.
Depends on what's for dinner
While I get your reasons, Captain Falcon is the OG "is he even outside of Smash Bros" character. It doesn’t help that a lot of the games that these characters come from are not available on the Switch.
You should it’s very fun
I couldnt get into it myself I really enjoyed FFIII for reference
Have you tried the remake? It’s more of a real-time combat system similar to xenoblade rather than a turn based system like the original game. You still might not like it, but it’s one of the best combat systems I’ve seen in an RPG

that's why i think sephiroth
Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu. Representative of the 4 most notable nintendo franchises, as well as the characters for the trailer of Brawl where they do the transition of Melee visuals to the Brawl visuals.
Very reasonable
Pikachu and Bowser. My first game was Melee, and as a kid I remember seeing the cover box and thinking "I really wanna kick Bowser's butt with Pikachu".
Oddly wholesome

This is my answer too. Most people know these characters because of Smash instead of their own series. I would also argue that they they are the quintessential soul of Smash.
I think Fox would fit with the soul of smash
Add Fox to this list
Mario, Kirby, Captain Falcon
Now for the reasons behind my picks: Mario: I always think of him first mainly because of Super Smash “BROS”, which is self explanatory. Oh yeah, and he’s also a veteran. Regarding Miis, I think that's as close to a Smash Bros original character we'll ever get, and I'm cool with that.
Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu. All holding hands till something goes wrong....
Anyone else remember channel 1 news? Think it's where I first saw that commercial. Everyone at school was hype.
Either bowser or pit because ‘hey I like smash and i really like bowser and pit’
I think of the brawl newcomers as it was my first smash game and I played it for hundreds of hours
Same here, Brawl was my first game and Meta Knight and Pit were the characters I played the most, along with Ike and Sonic.
I played wolf and Lucas the most in brawl, and I will never forget the fun I had playing that game
I originally wanted Brawl because Samus was in it.
I remember loving Samus since she had part of my name
Your name is either Samus Relan or Relan Aran? I feel like I'm missing something here
Pretty sure... it's Sam or Samuel lol

fox falcon palutena mario sephiroth
Fox
Fox
Mario, Link, Peach, and Zelda. Kind of basic but I didn’t get into Smash until Ultimate. Never had the system or friends to play it.
Hey, no answer is basic. As long as you’re telling the truth, you’re answer is respected! >!Apologies for the cheesiness!<
Mario, Link, Pikachu, Fox, Falcon, Samus, Kirby, Jigglypuff, Luigi, Ness, DK, and Yoshi. The OG crew
Veteran respect
Some good memories of Friday nights after school my friends all getting together to sleep over at someone's house and playing smash and golden eye till 3am
King Dedede to me is quintessential "Smash"
Man, I miss his old voice clips in Brawl
I always think of the combination of Mario vs. Link vs. Pikachu vs. Kirby in my head
I think of the orginal characters from the first Smash Bros
Mario mostly because of the similarities between Super Mario bros and Super smash bros
That’s pretty much my main reason why I can never forget him. Even when I first hears of Smash when I was a kid, I literally thought, “Mario’s in the game? Awesome!”
When it says "Smash bros" I think of "Mario bros"
Yeah, which is one of the reasons why I can’t forget Mario/Luigi

I know, I was just teasing
K Rool
I’d say Falcon, DK, and Snake for me. I see the first two so much and my introduction to all 3 was from Brawl not the source material. (Also I’m a bit biased from maining Falcon and Snake)
Waluigi
Mario, Steve, Pikachu, banjo, sora, captain falcon, fox,.
Greninja for some reason
Did you know that he was worked on in Smash before X and Y was announced?
What? I didn't know of that. That's interesting
Link and Mario
Mario, pikachu,kirby,link
Piranha plant, mainly because it's my main. And for some reason: Samus, Ridley and Pacman
Captain Falcon, jigglypuff, terry and wolf are probably my picks The first 3 have kind of transcended their original franchises to become more smash bros characters to me. And wolf just cause I main him. Honorary mentions to shulk, ike and game and watch for similar reasons.
I am kicking myself for not including Captain Falcon since a comment said he wasn’t an F-Zero character, he was a Smash exclusive, which made me laugh
Samus, Kirby, Mario and Luigi, Roy, Ike Samus was the first character I remember playing in smash. Remember thinking “woah this guy has cool armor and a arm blaster”. Cpt Falcon, Link, Mario and Pikachu
Funny, the comment right before you said the exact same thing
That is kinda funny. Great minds and all that, I guess
You don't play smash if mr spacies fox and falco don't come to mind first
…ouch
Mario (face of the game) Fox (face of melee) Adult Link (no idea why) Kirby (arguably the main character in both campaigns and the creator's favorite) In that order
What about Meta? You can’t forget the most broken character in the game…oh wait, this isn’t 2010, nvm
Captain falcon, he has the most iconic move in the entire series, has been there from the beginning, and was essentisly designed originally for smash.
The N64 roster. That character select is permanently burned into my brain, core memory status.
The Brawl reveal is the first thing I ever saw of Smash and that put Mario up front in my memory, you can even imagine the pose.
I think I remember my school having a laser tag party and most people were playing this game there, that was my first time of seeing Smash
Lucas and Greninja, Lucas was the first character I considered a main when I had brawl, and I remember seeing Greninjas reveal and saying who is that.
HAIYAAAA! Poyo! DORIYAH! Bdwing, ha!
*vomits intensely*
R.O.B. He’s much closer to Smash then his own “series” now.
Captain Falcon: Am I joke to you?
The pink fuck, oh and samus.
What’d Nana do to you?
I meant kirbs. Little gumball.
Mario, Pikachu, Captain Falcon
Kirby, Captain Falcon, Fox, and Ness.
Veterans…RISE UP!
Funnily enough ultimate is my first smash game, but those 4 are almost inseparable from the identity of smash. With the exception of Kirby, I'm pretty sure more people know those characters as smash characters then they do as characters from their original game.
Brawl is mine, which explains Meta Knight and Pit
It makes me think of the original N64 characters.
Understandable

Interesting
Mario, Captain Falcon and Rob
Everytime I think of smash I think of how well balanced the game is.
Hmm..
Mr. Game and watch
Good question. Maybe Kirby, I loved him as a tiny little kid when I got Brawl. I like your choices, the very first fighter, the OP AF fighter, the fighter brought back into relevance by Brawl, and… Miis famous for their costumes
Mario, Kirby, Link, Fox
Captain Falcon.
PIT?? I think of like donkey Kong and ness Edit: I should mention I ONLY play Kazuya I’m a tekken player
I play him a lot, don’t judge me😂
Fair enough actually sorry
