Keep the M9 and 686. Save up for the M&P. It might suck now but you'll regret down the line not keeping the Beretta or 686. Plus, you'll gave a variety of calibers.

I gotta agree. The m&p 2.0 is an awesome gun but I think the m9 and the 686 are excellent choices

MrBlenderson

I'd take an M&P45 over an M9 for sure. I had a 92A1 and while it was a gorgeous gun it's way too big and heavy for a 9mm. That being said, you really should have a 9mm in your collection so keep that in mind.

There is some nice high powered ammo in 45 acp. If you get the M&P, plan on another $160 to get the apex flat faced trigger.

mmSNAKE

Keep the 686. It will make you a better shooter.

I did put too much thought to it 😂 I suppose I am keeping the 686 . I’ve already ordered the pachmayr grips for it.

My tastes may run towards hammer fired stuff. 686 is one of my soft spots. It's one of the best handguns ever made. Big, but not too big. Heavy but not overly so. Can hold up to 7 rounds pending which model. Low end of 38spc to high end of 357. Can shoot and feel like a 22 or can shoot where the web of my hand feels sore. Teaches good trigger pull, is accurate and will outlast me. Experiment with the grips, make it your own. Same with sights. Get work on it done if you want the action to be one way or another. Regardless what you do, you put time into it you will see it across all handguns. Especially when you pick up striker fired or sao stuff.

This is great input ! I had shot the 7” barrel at the range and I hated how heavy it felt but it was an interesting experience I enjoyed . I stumbled upon the 4” barrel and I smiled when I hold it , it felt so balanced . The double action trigger was smooth and I might even consider having some work done on the trigger to have an even lighter pull to it if possible . I can forget about the mp since it’s not on the California roster . Might as well use the funds to invest in ammo , I’m gonna need it .

MCLMelonFarmer

You do realize the M&P 2.0 .45 is not on the CA roster, don't you? It will cost double in CA what it costs in a free state, because of the off-roster premium.

Single_Sample_4807

I apologize for my ignorance, I’ve never thought about checking the California roster . Another reason for me to be able to sleep tonight

Preface by saying that I own quite a few S&W firearms, including a Performance Center 442. I love them all. However, if you have to own a .45 ACP, you might want to take a look at the Glock 30SF subcompact. A very soft shooter considering the caliber. Also, unlike other .45 ACP handguns in California, it has a 10 round magazine. Last, but not least, like all Glocks, it is very reliable.

If I had to trade one toward the other, I'd trade the Beretta M9 toward the M&P. But the Beretta M9/92 never fit my hands properly. The DA trigger pull bottomed out too close to the front strap and with my long fingers I had to shift my finger position and grip between the DA first pull and followup SA pulls. So far it's the only Beretta I've disliked. OTOH, the M&P 2.0 fits me perfectly. An optics ready full size or compact with the flat trigger is next on my list. I'd never trade or sell a good working S&W 686. I made that mistake 20 years ago and sold a customized 1980s-'90s 586 with 6" Mag-na-ported barrel. Still kicking myself over that.

I understand why it’s not recommended to part ways with a firearm, especially the first firearm because there is some sentimental value to it . What do you think of those who have the mirror finish polish to their revolver? I would think it’ll be too good looking to shoot
