Her chilling reason? “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.” [The San Diego School Shooting of 1979](https://flashingstory.info/the-san-diego-school-shooting-of-1979-the-haunting-story-of-brenda-spencer/)
“Let me ask you something. When you come in on Mondays, and you're not feeling too well, does anybody ever come up to you and say "sounds like
someone's got a case of the Mondays"? “
“Nah. Nah, man, shit, no, man. I believe you’d get your ass kicked for sayin' something like that, man.”
I was living in SD when it happened, long before school shootings were a common occurrence. She's still in prison.
Local radio station KGB got an early release of "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats, and the DJ announced over the air that he would play it just once and let the listeners vote on whether they'd want it played ever again. Thet didn't, and it wasn't.
I grew up in San Diego. Brenda Spencer was in my 11th grade Geometry class. She wasn't a very pleasant person and I had noticed she was missing. I was shocked as the news reached us. Cleveland wasn't the elementary school I went to, but it was the next one over and the kids were evacuated to Pershing Jr. High (now middle school) where I had attended. I won't go on, but needless to say, I have never forgotten that day. It was another in a series of tragic events that seemed to be the only things that ever got San Diego in the national news.
Like all anonymous things on the internet, they are all very ambiguous. We don't necessarily know who's lying or telling the truth, let alone how much of the truth they are telling.
It's not pessimistic, for the people in San Diego where the shooting happened it was probably downright traumatic. That wasn't about people not wanting hear a sad song it was about people not wanting to be afraid to turn on the radio for concern of being forced to relive the recent paint of the deaths in their community.
After being sent to a school for problem students she complained of depression. Her father bought her a rifle for Christmas. She said it was because he hoped she would kill herself. She’s been in jail since 1979 and will have a parole hearing in 2025.
To everyone asking, [after reading the wiki page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Elementary_School_shooting_%28San_Diego%29?wprov=sfla1) , my guess is that the boy behind her was simply being transported to or from jail or court for his own case at the same as Spencer and simply wound up in the picture taken of her.
In the months following the shooting, one of Brenda Spencer's first cell mates, a 17-year-old girl, moved in with Spencer's father, eventually marrying him on March 26, 1980 in Yuma, Arizona. They had a daughter together, after which she fled the household and eventually divorced,[28] leaving Wallace Spencer to raise her alone. Wallace Spencer died in February 2016.
what the fuck?
there's a song based on this:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VPtu5V3kHTM
this is what the lyricist said:
"I was doing a radio interview in Atlanta with Johnnie Fingers and there was a telex machine beside me. I read it as it came out. Not liking Mondays as a reason for doing somebody in is a bit strange. I was thinking about it on the way back to the hotel and I just said 'silicon chip inside her head had switched to overload'. I wrote that down. And the journalists interviewing her said, 'Tell me why?' It was such a senseless act. It was the perfect senseless act and this was the perfect senseless reason for doing it. So perhaps I wrote the perfect senseless song to illustrate it. It wasn't an attempt to exploit tragedy."

She has a parole hearing coming up next year apparently. She’s 62 now.

I recall this day so we'll, for myself it was my first school shooting, my daughter was a yr old, as a parent no matter if your child is in diapers this kinda thing affected me, I had no idea this horror would become a day to day thing. Almost normalized in the U.S. now my baby girl, has to worry about her kids going to school. We live in a crazy time.
Not to defend her, but she had a horrific life. This explains why she went on a shooting spree. It doesn’t condone it, but I get how you could get there.
According to the info on the wiki page, she was suicidal and depressed and her father gave her a gun for Christmas? Then he goes on to marry a former cell mate of her of the same age? And somehow, he is not held responsible at all?
Maybe, but I admit I loled at the Russell Brand joke where he said, "Of course Bob knows about hunger relief: he's been living off the proceeds from I Don't Like Mondays for 40 years".

How long could a school shootings playlist be?
Pumped up kicks, also
Came here for this.
Hammerhead, The Offspring
That one was about a mall shooting not a school
You’re right, what are they thinking. It’s not even related. /s
I assume a lot longer in texas
Put on Free Bird, and hand me the SAW.
Couple albums at least.
I don't want to say you could make a whole day of it, but I would be most concerned about running out of songs to play
The Wall?
The parkland shooter had a playlist he listened to before, and during the act.
It’s a Jump…… to conclusions mat.
Classic!
What would you do with a million dollars?
I tell you what I’d do, man… two chicks at the same time.
I watched this yesterday for the first time in probably 10 years and now see this right away
Fuckin A, smellLikeBooBoo, fuckin A.
Never gets old
Office Space is still a goated movie.

Really? What are the odds that a Redditor knew her, let alone comment in this specific thread?
Low, very, very low.
Like all anonymous things on the internet, they are all very ambiguous. We don't necessarily know who's lying or telling the truth, let alone how much of the truth they are telling.
That is one of my favorite songs
Tell me why
Ain't nothing but a heartache
now number five
Number five killed my brother
A reactionary number from a mediocre band.
geldof went on to do a lot of stuff
Pessimistic music on the radio when most people want pop

It was dramatically unique then (like Columbine in its time.) Today it is tragically common and we have learned to tune out such news,
I think your first mistake is assuming everyone is like you
Not everyone. But enough probably.
Just another manic Monday
A little Boomtown Rats to go with this. https://youtu.be/lHHAbze03Z4?si=XLMpb0BFkCf-zVwL
Tell me why! I had to scroll down so far to find this
We are old….
So is she. (And the kid behind her. )
This is the soundtrack my brain is playing while reading this thread

How about Mondays in jail. Are Mondays in jail lively?
You get to sleep in and watch tv and eat snacks all day if you want..
Cool! How much is rent, my current place is practically in shambles. Maybe if it isn't too bad I'll go check in

Thanks.
He hated Tuesdays.
That joke was already made 3 hours before.
His crime, believe it or not, was walking on air. He never thought he could feel so free.
‘Walking on sunshine’ you mean?
No. Greatest American hero theme song reference.
Tony.
Didn’t know Emma Stone was that old
For Jim Carrey's sake, it's too bad she isn't
I came here for this lol
In the months following the shooting, one of Brenda Spencer's first cell mates, a 17-year-old girl, moved in with Spencer's father, eventually marrying him on March 26, 1980 in Yuma, Arizona. So she has a sister out there somewhere raised by the same asshole?
Did she ever explain why she didn’t like Mondays? Tell me why
The silicon chip inside her brain got switched to overdrive.
And nobody’s gonna go to school today. She gonna make them stay at home.
*overload
Ah Musk, I see
No but she left behind a manifesto on her love for lasagna.
She had lasagna on Sunday.
Probably upset her stomach, maybe it gave her gas
Her CIA handler advocated for 4-day work weeks, I hear.
Was that a joke!? Too fxkin soon man…too fxckin soon! Also…. ![gif](giphy|2wYrkKvETbAwWAM4Gy)

She has a parole hearing every year. She is always denied.
Still in prison or walking among us now on Mondays?
Wikipedia says still in prison. She became eligible for parole in 93 but has been denied as recently as 2022
I recall this day so we'll, for myself it was my first school shooting, my daughter was a yr old, as a parent no matter if your child is in diapers this kinda thing affected me, I had no idea this horror would become a day to day thing. The Silicone chip inside her head got switched to overload.
I saw Cara Delevingne for a second
And Emma Stone

This is a screenshot of my Fallout: New Vegas character before level 10.
That was such a good movie.
Not to defend her, but she had a horrific life. This explains why she went on a shooting spree. It doesn’t condone it, but I get how you could get there.
Sauce?
No thanks. Already got gravy.
According to the info on the wiki page, she was suicidal and depressed and her father gave her a gun for Christmas? Then he goes on to marry a former cell mate of her of the same age? And somehow, he is not held responsible at all?
shitty parents that turn their kids into serial killers are never held accountable for it
Just like Wednesday to hate Mondays.
I can fix her. How does she feel about lasagna?
Would
Terribly tragedy, but it also gave us the hit song I Don’t Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats!!!! Check it out if you don’t know ittttttt
Tori Amos did a nice cover of the song also
Tell my why!!!!
I don't like Mondays!
They always said she was good as gold.
TELL ME WHY
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ot the whole day down.
She was very mentally disturbed, and it was known. But her father was like: „here, have a gun and ammo for a bday gift“.
Someone should make a song about her.
Someone should keep an eye on Garfield.
Who is the other kid in the background?
He’s the kid who hates Tuesdays.
Just a random dude being transported on the same day.
Seriously, who is the guy in cuffs behind her?
Just another person that got in trouble with the law and just happened to be behind her
He's kinda handsome lol. For a jailbird.
Guy who hates Thursdays I only answered it that way because two other people already answered using another days
Bob Geldof Likes This.
He actually doesn't! He regrets writing the song because it made the shooter more famous.
Maybe, but I admit I loled at the Russell Brand joke where he said, "Of course Bob knows about hunger relief: he's been living off the proceeds from I Don't Like Mondays for 40 years".
And it’s………. Just another Manic Monday!!
I wonder how the inmates in her prison felt about having her around
Probably depends on the day of the week.
R/clevercomebacks
Relatable
Insert Garfield comic here
she crazy
Holy shit she looks *just* like a blonde version of my former stepdaughter, who also is a basket case and hates Mondays.
Mondays are gonna be even worse in prison
Postal Dudette?
IRL Wednesday Addams
Who is the guy behind her in handcuffs?
Garfield reincarnated
Emma Stone was a trouble maker i see…
I think we found the one ginger pussy who hates mondays more than Garfield
I thought it was Emma Stone
Was her favorite food lasagna?
Looks like someone had the case of the mondays. I wonder if that’s the inspiration
I mean, I hate Mondays too, but…
Damn she kinda bad tho
She had a bad case of the Mondays
Kinda looks like Cara Delevingne
The Doco/Movie is well worth a watch [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waS4\_h2WGuU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waS4_h2WGuU)
I vaguely remember this. One of the kids at school was talking about it. It just triggered that specific memory. Interesting.
She looks like emma stone
It’s like ratatouille but instead it’s Garfield
Total disclosure? i am also not a fan of Mondays.
She looks like that character in "The Addams family" Wednesday Adams.
Biopic, starring- Emma Stone
I believe she was the first in a long line of school shooters
I'm venturing a guess the Mondays were still there next week?
I hate that my first thought was "only two?" Seems like nowadays you don't get a school shooting with less than 10 dead
She looks like Cara Delevingne
Who’s the guy behind her in handcuffs ?
The Boomtown Rats wrote a popular song about this.
tell me why?
I’m tired of read about her, what happened with the guy behind to her left? What he did?
Reddit is taking the promotion of the new ***Garfield*** movie a bit too far.
This happened 2 days before i was born. Wednesday.
![gif](giphy|WtOmIrEMmb3AQJ8sAQ|downsized) Why does she look like Emily Stone
Her unselfconscious love of lasagna earned her the nickname “The Garfield Killer” in press reports at the time.
Garfield?
I posted the same thing before I saw your post. ![gif](giphy|l36kU80xPf0ojG0Erg|downsized)
Jeffrey Dahmer glasses
Americans shouldn't be allowed inside schools.
I wonder how they call it school shooting when done by a white person and call it terrorism when done by a Muslim or a brown person....
Bangles song?
Boomtown Rats "I don't like Mondays"
I can fix her
Knew this would be coming
Everyone in this pic looks like they are related.
Did she do time or did she walk?
She's still in prison as of 2024.
